The Master of Studies in Social Innovation is a new part time graduate programme which will launch in September 2015 and welcome its first cohort of up to 25 students in autumn 2016.

The programme is part-time over two years and includes online delivery and four residentials of a week each in Cambridge - three residentials in the first year and one residential in the second year.

The programme will provide an overview and understanding of social innovation and approaches to address social, cultural, economic, and environmental challenges and opportunities. Social innovation is becoming central to the ambitions of the corporate and public sectors as well as the NGO/social sector, therefore the programme will examine social innovation within each sector as well as the pressing need to work in collaboration to tackle the 'wicked problems' the globe faces.

The Master of Studies (MSt) will provide an open environment for critical dialogue. The aim is to be highly interactive with workshops, case studies, subject experts, and practitioners engaging in the discussion of key concepts, theories, frameworks, and emerging ideas for creating, developing, and enabling social innovation in the public, private and social sectors in the UK and internationally.

In recognition of the fact that social innovation occurs across all sectors, the MSt will be aimed at middle and senior level leaders in NGOs, public bodies and the private sector. You will form a key part of a strategy to engage with individuals and organisations working specifically to develop novel 'solutions' to deep-rooted problems of poverty and inequality in both rich and poor countries.

You will complete three taught modules in year one and one taught module, plus a dissertation, in year two.

Assessment

Modules 1 and 2 will be assessed by essays (5,000 words). Module 3 will be assessed by a business plan or critical case study (5,000 words) and module 5 by a research proposal (4,000 words). Each module assignment (1-4) contributes 12.5% to the final mark

Your mark for the 15,000 word dissertation contributes 50% to the final mark.

In the face of the promise of untold growth we are now confronted by a harsh reality: that in the second decade of the 21st century the traditional model of ‘business as usual’ is no longer viable. In applying a range of approaches to designing and prototyping social ventures and models of organisation, the MDes in Social Innovation will equip you with a practice-based approach to embedding innovation in the area of sustainability, community resilience, corporate social responsibility, venture philanthropy and organisational agility. Working with a cross- disciplinary team of professionals, the course will allow you to learn about radical ideas, evolve these ideas and test them in a ‘lived’ organisational environment.

The MDes Social Innovation will demonstrate that many of the most successful designs, innovations and innovators have learned to operate across the boundaries between disciplines, sectors, organisations and traditional services.

The course will develop your ideas and skills in people-centred and organisational leadership as a way of transforming the way that public, private and not-for-profit services are shaped using design thinking methodologies.

At its heart lie three design principles:

What is Leadership for Sustainability about?

The master’s degree programme is grounded in four core premises:

1. Sustainability requires new forms of organising, especially when it comes to project-based organisations involving diverse stakeholders.

2. Organising and leading sustainability requires new and diverse leading and organising skills, understanding and knowledge for managers and leaders of sustainable projects.

3. Organising and leading sustainability requires a new way of thinking sustainability within and between organisations. Current research on social entrepreneurship and social innovation can reveal new methods and strategies with regards to this.

What makes Leadership for Sustainability unique?

In this programme students are taught to reflect upon organisational and leadership challenges linked to organisational development and sustainability. This programme provides students with knowledge and critical understanding of current research in the fields of leadership and organisation, project management, social entrepreneurship and social innovation in the context of sustainability and sustainable development.

This master's programme is also focused on action and doing via diverse projects and even via the thesis work. This is a way to develop students’ professional, conceptual and human skills so that as for example future sustainable leaders and social entrepreneurs, they will drive sustainable changes and have the capacity to make informed decisions about organisational and leadership issues in the management of sustainable organisations and projects.

The MA in more detail

The MA in Social Entrepreneurship is one of the few graduate programmes in the world dedicated entirely to the study of the fast-moving field of social entrepreneurship and innovation.

It will equip you with a strong understanding of foundational theories of entrepreneurship, innovation, social problems and policy (with organisational sociology as the base discipline) while supplying practical tools in relation to entrepreneurial modelling and SROI.

There is also a marked emphasis on creativity, which means that you will have considerable scope to choose the precise topics you wish to tackle and the approaches you wish to apply. Teaching on the course is interactive and seminar-driven rather than based on the traditional model of long lectures and limited discussions.

What you study

The programme will introduce you to key concepts in the historical development of social enterprise and innovation and to its changing role in society and the economy. Seminars and talks will be given by social entrepreneurs, as well as leading professionals.

You'll learn innovative approaches to developing an enterprise, and gain confidence in revenue generation and financial modelling. 

A significant amount of the learning is delivered through group projects and activities. This is designed to develop your individual communication skills and teamwork.

The programme consists of five core modules:

We are occasionally able to provide additional training in related fields (such as accounting) in the form of short-term workshops to strengthen our students’ educational experience at Goldsmiths and at the University of London. We also encourage you to become members of various social entrepreneurship/collaboration hubs around London for learning and networking purposes.

A non-business school programme

The MA in Social Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths is quite unlike traditional business/management-driven courses in the field: on the one hand, it allows scope for a far deeper examination of the theoretical and practical foundations of social innovation; on the other, it provides unique access to an expanding learning community (formed by our students and our wider, growing network) engaged in real-time research.

Equally important is the fact that students are consciously encouraged to, and supported with, forming their professional public profiles, through things like:

Our Master’s programme is truly an international programme, in both its teaching and its orientation. The same goes for the policy and intervention approaches that are used to tackle these issues. You will find that this international perspective is a key feature of the programme. Interdisciplinary

In addition to its international, comparative perspective, the programme is also characterized by its interdisciplinary and multi-method approach. Modules & structure

You'll learn core leadership skills, and how to apply them to manage the near continuous need for innovations and changes in organisational products, structures, strategies, and processes. You can choose to study the latest techniques and strategies for consumer behaviour and marketing or seek to develop a fully formed business model for entreprenurial ventures.

The programme mixes theory and practice and allows you to obtain a professional qualification in project management and development, which will enhance your employment prospects.

The Institute of Management Studies (IMS) at Goldsmiths benefits from excellent links with industry. Graduates of this programme will be capable of leadership and adaptive management styles, and will be able to direct and manage innovation in a variety of organisations.

Research Project (60 credits)

You'll undertake an independent piece of research or a large-scale multimedia website and/or mobile application addressing a specific innovation gap or entrepreneurial opportunity related to digital entrepreneurship. The research dissertation should be no longer than 10,000 words. If you choose to develop a multimedia application you must provide an accompanying 3,000 word critical analysis essay reflecting on the production process. You'll be allocated to an appropriate supervisor.

Option modules 

Students on the MSc Management of Innovation programme can choose 45 credits of options. This offers opportunities for students to focus on specific aspects of management and innovation that fit with individual student interests from developing innovative ventures to product development and progressive and contemporary forms of managing and motivating human capital.

Please note as an enrolled postgraduate student it is often possible to take additional modules from other departments at Goldsmiths, however these audited modules are not for credit towards your MSc.

Skills

The programme will help you develop strong project management, problem-solving, decision-making and critical evaluation skills. You'll develop an understanding of theories of leadership, and the characteristics of the organisational and social structures within which leaders and talented individuals work. You'll learn about project management and how it can be applied to a range of project environments. You'll also learn about innovation approaches and challenges, and how to translate conceptual and theoretical implications of innovation to practical applications.

Our aim is to educate a new generation to create and grow innovative companies and social enterprises. The MSc Innovation and Entrepreneurship programme aims to develop the high-level skills and critical competencies needed for successful innovation and entrepreneurship, through a practice-orientated approach based on collaborative teamwork across disciplines and cultures. It teaches students how to apply their subject-specific knowledge to real-world challenges through a range of transdisciplinary units focusing on innovation-led entrepreneurial skills, design and systems thinking, making and testing. Students will be equipped to apply their knowledge and skills to address key issues such as health, education and the environment. Their final project will be their launchpad, when they will create an enterprise, put together a detailed plan and work out how take it forward and raise investment.

Santander Innovation Scholarships

We have five Santander Innovation Scholarships worth £3,000 each, which will be awarded as a one-off payment to the top five students on the MSc Innovation and Entrepreneurship programme at the beginning of their course. These scholarships will be open to both home and overseas students and will be offered based on academic merit for the best innovation pitches (text or video) submitted, as judged by the innovations academic team. Representatives from Santander will meet the student award recipients at an event in September/October, near the start of term, when these scholarships will be awarded.

Programme structure

You will start by learning to work in teams and find out about both design thinking and systems thinking. This combination can deliver a holistic understanding of a genuine problem or need, generate ideas that will transform both the system and lives of users, while ensuring the new system is sustainable. You will work in multidisciplinary teams to take on a series of innovation and entrepreneurial challenges. You will also learn to create innovations to meet real human needs through the In the Wild unit, understanding your target audience and the issues facing them and developing ideas for possible solutions. You will gain insight into the technological, social and political influences on design and innovation, drawing on case studies of success and failure to help you think about future opportunities.

In the second teaching block you will explore solutions for a real-world client, iterating to develop an unexpected range of possibilities and creating prototypes to test with real customers or users. You will learn about different kinds of enterprise and learn how to explore your ideas from a business or social perspective and how to place them in the appropriate context. You will find out how to assess the feasibility, sustainability and desirability of a proposed venture, how to create business plans and how to assess whether your ideas will work, are viable, or whether anyone will want them.

In your final project over the summer, you will work in teams to pull together all you have learned - to create and trial a prototype for an innovative product or service, or a social innovation. Your team may contain staff and external partners, as well as students. You will put together a detailed enterprise plan to accompany your prototype, including market analysis, intellectual property searches, resource profiles, financial plans, user testing and clear opportunities for investment.

Careers

You will still be an expert in your chosen subject specialism and you will still be able to proceed into careers requiring an honours course in that specialism. However you will also be equipped to do much more: to take your subject knowledge and apply it to real-world challenges, to innovate, to work in teams with people from different specialisms, backgrounds and cultures, and to create and implement entrepreneurial plans to take ideas forward. These skills are highly valued by all organisations, large or small, local or global.

You may graduate as a member of a new venture that you and your fellow students have created. Or you may decide you want to create your own enterprise or join an existing one. Whatever you decide, you will be able to hit the ground running, building on your entrepreneurial and innovation experience. You will soon have the satisfaction of seeing your work starting to make an impact – and ultimately changing the world.

At the end of the classroom portion of the program, each student will be required to complete a Final Management Project of approximately 20,000 words in length under the guidance of a GGSB professor.

In order to successfully complete the Final Management Project, students are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in their field of study.

This research should be business-oriented and coherent with the program’s objectives. A student may choose to write the Final Management Project on a topic grounded in his or her internship experience.

During this program, participants will have the opportunity to become real-life business developers by exploring a Live Business Case provided by companies working in partnerships with the MSc Innovation, Strategy, and Entrepreneurship program. Students will work in groups and delve deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

LIVE BUSINESS CASES WILL COVER:

- Innovation, entrepreneurship, and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective.
- A capstone opportunity for students to apply theoretical principles from coursework and lectures.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE LIVE BUSINESS CASE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

- Build a company analysis
- Select and apply a methodology, and make useful and efficient recommendations.
- Understand the Business Development process
- Provide critical analysis
- Make strategic decisions
- Work in a small multicultural group under time constraints
- Produce compelling written and oral presentations
- Demonstrate communication, negotiation and leadership skills

At the end of the seven-month Live Business Case, each group will produce a written report and make an oral presentation to the Jury and other groups from the program. The Jury consists of the company coach, the school coach, and the program director.

MANAGERIAL CREATIVITY : A METHOD OF SELF MANAGEMENT BY THE STUDENTS

This course/workshop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you to be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

By discovering them during this course, you will be able to imagine together how to leverage the strengths of your class and how to manage your improvement points. You have to manage the classroom as a company, so we will appoint different representatives in charge of the main aspects of the construction of the class as a performing team: event manager, class representative, timekeeper, project leader, MSc community leader, and Alumni communication and coordination manager. These representatives and their teams will draft an action plan for the coming year.

Foreign Languages

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time. No prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Non-French speakers may study French. Native and fluent French speakers will have the possibility to choose from Spanish or Chinese. The language component is not compulsory.

The MSc in Social Enterprise is a new and exciting course aimed at professionals working within social enterprises, advisors, officials, development officers and sector representatives and those wishing to develop a career or an interest in social enterprise. Delivery and assessment

Delivery will be a mix of full day teaching and online resource support. Teaching days will be spread at regular intervals throughout each semester. One day per core module is a ‘Masterclass’ for the Social Enterprise Sector in Scotland. Students work with detailed case studies and input from industry representatives to provide a high-quality learning experience. This is further enhanced with a range of web-based resources to support and reinforce learning on the course.
Assessment will be through a mix of coursework, presentations, online participation and an important social enterprise research project. The project will contribute to the Social Enterprise Laboratory at Stirling.

This innovative course was one of the first Master’s programmes - globally - that sought to explain the relationship between innovation and design and the importance of applying a strategic approach using design thinking, design methods and process.

Design consultancies - Many design staff at Brunel are practicing design consultants in their own right, and also work closely with several design consultancies, including Design Bridge. an international brand design agency. Course content

The course introduces you to the fundamental concepts and techniques of innovation management. Core modules will explore the importance of different types of innovation and how they interact with each other, as well as the challenges of commercialising ideas and practical aspects of leading innovation teams. A grounding in international business theory and the globalisation of innovation will put this into context, and you’ll develop your knowledge of research design in the subject.

You’ll expand your knowledge during modules that focus on managing and using intellectual capital and strategic management techniques. An additional module will cultivate your professional skills, allowing you to undertake fieldwork and develop research of your own.

There are opportunities to gain specialist knowledge in areas that suit your own interests – you’ll choose from a range of optional modules in management and business topics such as enterprise creation, decision making and supply chain management.

You’ll also focus on a specific topic of your choice during your dissertation project in the third semester. This is an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge you’ve acquired and can be either a research dissertation or a practical consultancy project.

This programme

Our Design Innovation Management MSc has been established to develop innovative thinkers from creative designers. You will learn the value of collaborative behaviour through active learning and team work, analysing and evaluating problems by responding to challenges in real time. You will also take part in a substantial innovation management project, which will draw upon your analytical and research skills.

You will enhance your design skills and knowledge through theoretical and practical application. In turn, this will improve your effectiveness as a designer.
