The Master of Studies in Social Innovation is a new part time graduate programme which will launch in September 2015 and welcome its first cohort of up to 25 students in autumn 2016.

The programme is part-time over two years and includes online delivery and four residentials of a week each in Cambridge - three residentials in the first year and one residential in the second year.

The programme will provide an overview and understanding of social innovation and approaches to address social, cultural, economic, and environmental challenges and opportunities. Social innovation is becoming central to the ambitions of the corporate and public sectors as well as the NGO/social sector, therefore the programme will examine social innovation within each sector as well as the pressing need to work in collaboration to tackle the 'wicked problems' the globe faces.

The Master of Studies (MSt) will provide an open environment for critical dialogue. The aim is to be highly interactive with workshops, case studies, subject experts, and practitioners engaging in the discussion of key concepts, theories, frameworks, and emerging ideas for creating, developing, and enabling social innovation in the public, private and social sectors in the UK and internationally.

In recognition of the fact that social innovation occurs across all sectors, the MSt will be aimed at middle and senior level leaders in NGOs, public bodies and the private sector. You will form a key part of a strategy to engage with individuals and organisations working specifically to develop novel 'solutions' to deep-rooted problems of poverty and inequality in both rich and poor countries.

You will complete three taught modules in year one and one taught module, plus a dissertation, in year two.

Assessment

Modules 1 and 2 will be assessed by essays (5,000 words). Module 3 will be assessed by a business plan or critical case study (5,000 words) and module 5 by a research proposal (4,000 words). Each module assignment (1-4) contributes 12.5% to the final mark

Your mark for the 15,000 word dissertation contributes 50% to the final mark.

The Master of Design in Social Innovation applies the lens of design thinking to address some of society’s most intractable social, environmental and economic challenges.

In the face of the promise of untold growth we are now confronted by a harsh reality: that in the second decade of the 21st century the traditional model of ‘business as usual’ is no longer viable. In applying a range of approaches to designing and prototyping social ventures and models of organisation, the MDes in Social Innovation will equip you with a practice-based approach to embedding innovation in the area of sustainability, community resilience, corporate social responsibility, venture philanthropy and organisational agility. Working with a cross- disciplinary team of professionals, the course will allow you to learn about radical ideas, evolve these ideas and test them in a ‘lived’ organisational environment.

The MDes Social Innovation will demonstrate that many of the most successful designs, innovations and innovators have learned to operate across the boundaries between disciplines, sectors, organisations and traditional services.

The course will develop your ideas and skills in people-centred and organisational leadership as a way of transforming the way that public, private and not-for-profit services are shaped using design thinking methodologies.

At its heart lie three design principles:

1. an holistic approach - the need to approach innovation from a ‘holistic’ point of view, drawing on its potential impact in terms of people, technology, the environment, psychological and emotional meaning and long-term sustainability

2. a core intent - the potential to develop a ‘core intent’
and value proposition to organisational models to stimulate commercial and brand value through interaction, social value, collaboration and ideas generation

3. participatory and inclusive - the importance of developing social and environmental solutions ‘with’ and ‘by’ key stakeholders, customers/markets etc. and not simply ‘to’ and ‘for’ people.

- To understand the role of social innovation as a business discipline balancing both leadership roles in terms of innovation, the creation of vision and future directions and management roles in terms of using specific tools, methods and techniques.

This international MA provides practical and sociological tools to individuals motivated to develop alternative economic practices and frameworks to meet such challenges. These might include (but are not limited to) social enterprises, collaborative innovation networks, hubs, digital platforms, support intermediaries and/or policy proposals.

Benefitting from the MA’s timely educational content as well as from its firm roots in London’s rich networks, our students go on to become thought leaders in the burgeoning social innovation field, advancing it in a creative fashion from their chosen angle. The MA in more detail

The MA in Social Entrepreneurship is one of the few graduate programmes in the world dedicated entirely to the study of the fast-moving field of social entrepreneurship and innovation.

It will equip you with a strong understanding of foundational theories of entrepreneurship, innovation, social problems and policy (with organisational sociology as the base discipline) while supplying practical tools in relation to entrepreneurial modelling and SROI.

There is also a marked emphasis on creativity, which means that you will have considerable scope to choose the precise topics you wish to tackle and the approaches you wish to apply. Teaching on the course is interactive and seminar-driven rather than based on the traditional model of long lectures and limited discussions.

What you study

The programme will introduce you to key concepts in the historical development of social enterprise and innovation and to its changing role in society and the economy. Seminars and talks will be given by social entrepreneurs, as well as leading professionals.

You'll learn innovative approaches to developing an enterprise, and gain confidence in revenue generation and financial modelling.

A significant amount of the learning is delivered through group projects and activities. This is designed to develop your individual communication skills and teamwork.

The programme consists of five core modules:

In addition to these main modules, we also regularly invite external experts from intermediaries such as UnLtd and other educational institutions such as the University of Oxford to ensure our students get access to a wide range of cutting-edge topics in the field. Social and alternative finance is among the key areas examined in such guest lectures; social innovation cases from particular country-contexts such as, for example, South Korea, Japan and Colombia also feature frequently.

We are occasionally able to provide additional training in related fields (such as accounting) in the form of short-term workshops to strengthen our students’ educational experience at Goldsmiths and at the University of London. We also encourage you to become members of various social entrepreneurship/collaboration hubs around London for learning and networking purposes.

A non-business school programme

The MA in Social Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths is quite unlike traditional business/management-driven courses in the field: on the one hand, it allows scope for a far deeper examination of the theoretical and practical foundations of social innovation; on the other, it provides unique access to an expanding learning community (formed by our students and our wider, growing network) engaged in real-time research.

Equally important is the fact that students are consciously encouraged to, and supported with, forming their professional public profiles, through things like:

developing your own social enterprise
Because our students possess diverse, highly relevant knowledge that they have accumulated prior to coming to Goldsmiths, real efforts are made to integrate this knowledge and experience into the collective learning processes.

A person wishing to work in the not-for-profit field is not necessarily someone who is disinterested in making a profit. It may well be that this individual has invested many years in the for-profit rough-and-tumble world and now feels drawn to giving back to the community in a less aggressive, less competitive endeavor. This field also may appeal to the more humanitarian-minded individual who is just starting a career. The not-for-profit’s primary goal is not to increase shareholder value; rather it is to fulfill some socially desirable need. The programme provides a general background on innovation management including

- the management of innovation from invention to commercialisation
- innovation strategies, structures, and cultures
- market forces of innovation and market-oriented new product development
- the management of intellectual property rights
- Entrepreneurship

The programme creates a unique opportunity to experience the challenges throughout the new product development process and to develop a mutual understanding about the rationales on the technology as well as on the business management side. There is a broad empirical basis that such a mutual understanding is a key prerequisite for successful cooperation between R&D and marketing and ultimately for innovation success. The aim of the programme is therefore to enhance students' understandings about strategies, structures, processes, people and cultures to develop successful innovations and to enhance the innovative capability of firms.

PREREQUISITE COURSES

Management Research Method
The learning objective of this course is to enable you to conduct empirical business research in a valid and reliable manner. You learn how to formulate research questions and to identify an appropriate research plan and methodology for the given set of research questions. This includes methodologies how to define unit of analysis and sample as well as methodologies how to collect, analyze and interpret data.

Entrepreneurship: Shaping Entrepreneurial Thinking
This course will enable you to develop entrepreneurial thinking and behaviour and to start your own firm based on your business ideas. Students develop and evaluate business ideas and learn how to develop a compelling business case based on entrepreneurial market research. The course furthermore includes the decision on the appropriate legal form for their new venture and new venture financing.

Classic and Contemporary Readings in Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The course enables students to create two forms of competences. 1) An improved ability to read, question, and form conclusions from research-based literature, and 2) an overview of the central classic and contemporary literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship. Together these competencies provide students with the ability to critically evaluate and choose relevant literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship.

New Product Development Clinic
The learning objective is to enable you to understand and execute the crucial tasks in the new product development process from idea generation to commercialisation. The course takes a concrete development problem as point of departure. Students will generate ideas for the solution of this problem and then carry out concept testing, prototype development, market assessment and pre-launch activities. Therefore, you will experience all the challenges in the new product development process hands-on. The course will be co-taught with faculty from Aarhus BSS and Aarhus School of Engineering. The teaching method of the course is project-based.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

Appropriating innovation – Managing Intellectual property rights
In this course the aim is to develop an understanding of how intellectual property rights, particularly patents, can be used as tools for technology development. A short introduction to the history and theory of patents is followed by an examination of the use of patents as tools of technology development. The course will also consider the evidence in support of the theory that patents on significant inventions are used to control and block 'downstream' innovation. Furthermore, the course will consider the 'anti-trust'- patent so-called 'interface' and recent changes to policy in favour of patents in the US.

Organising for Innovation
In this course the aim is to develop an understanding of the firm-internal perspective and context on innovation. This includes the formulation of and decision for innovation strategies, organisational structures and designs for innovation, creativity and performance within innovation teams, cooperation between R&D and marketing in the new product development process, champions and promotors of innovation, the management of radical innovation and the measurement of innovation performance.

Open and User-Driven Innovation
Shorter product life cycles and increased technological complexity of new products and services force firms to increasingly open their innovation processes to external sources of innovation. The learning objective of this course is therefore to enable you to understand which relevant sources of innovation exist outside the firm and how a firm can systematically use these external sources as leverage for new product development and for enhancing the innovative capability of a firm. The course includes emerging forms of open and distributed innovation. Specific focus will be given to user-driven innovation, including market orientation in the new product development process, lead user innovation, user communities and user toolkits.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 200 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialize in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

At the end of the classroom portion of the program, each student will be required to complete a Final Management Project of approximately 20,000 words in length under the guidance of a GGSB professor.

In order to successfully complete the Final Management Project, students are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in their field of study.

This research should be business-oriented and coherent with the program’s objectives. A student may choose to write the Final Management Project on a topic grounded in his or her internship experience.

During this program, participants will have the opportunity to become real-life business developers by exploring a Live Business Case provided by companies working in partnerships with the MSc Innovation, Strategy, and Entrepreneurship program. Students will work in groups and delve deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

LIVE BUSINESS CASES WILL COVER:

- Innovation, entrepreneurship, and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective.
- A capstone opportunity for students to apply theoretical principles from coursework and lectures.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE LIVE BUSINESS CASE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

- Build a company analysis
- Select and apply a methodology, and make useful and efficient recommendations.
- Understand the Business Development process

- Work in a small multicultural group under time constraints

At the end of the seven-month Live Business Case, each group will produce a written report and make an oral presentation to the Jury and other groups from the program. The Jury consists of the company coach, the school coach, and the program director.

MANAGERIAL CREATIVITY : A METHOD OF SELF MANAGEMENT BY THE STUDENTS

This course/workshop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you to be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

By discovering them during this course, you will be able to imagine together how to leverage the strengths of your class and how to manage your improvement points. You have to manage the classroom as a company, so we will appoint different representatives in charge of the main aspects of the construction of the class as a performing team: event manager, class representative, timekeeper, project leader, MSc community leader, and Alumni communication and coordination manager. These representatives and their teams will draft an action plan for the coming year.

Foreign Languages

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time. No prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Non-French speakers may study French. Native and fluent French speakers will have the possibility to choose from Spanish or Chinese. The language component is not compulsory.

Delivery and assessment

Delivery will be a mix of full day teaching and online resource support. Teaching days will be spread at regular intervals throughout each semester. One day per core module is a ‘Masterclass’ for the Social Enterprise Sector in Scotland. Students work with detailed case studies and input from industry representatives to provide a high-quality learning experience. This is further enhanced with a range of web-based resources to support and reinforce learning on the course.
Assessment will be through a mix of coursework, presentations, online participation and an important social enterprise research project. The project will contribute to the Social Enterprise Laboratory at Stirling.

Why study Advanced Social Work Studies at Dundee?

The MSc in Advanced Social Work Studies will allow you to engage with advanced level social work theory and develop the knowledge base and enquiry skills required to understand and contribute to 21st century social work.

Semester 2

Research project (60 credits) relevant to Social Work which will be supported by a dissertation supervisor and ongoing collaboration with peers. This module will run the full length of the semester and the full dissertation will be completed during the summer.

Social science perspectives are crucial to understanding and solving environmental problems. Human behaviour produces many elements of the ‘natural’ environment, from landscapes to floods and famines. Local and national policies and international agreements regulate the environmental practices of corporations, governments and households. The social sciences have a great deal to contribute to understanding what have become defined as environmental issues, and what measures can most effectively tackle them.

The multidisciplinary Environmental Social Science programmes draw on the contributions of Anthropology, Conservation and Ecology, Law, Social Policy and Sociology. In each of these disciplines, Kent is very active in research, and the majority of research outputs were rated “internationally excellent” or better in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. Offering a variety of disciplinary and problem-oriented courses, the programme is taught in an interactive style where learning from each other is emphasised. Working in small international groups contributes significantly to this mutual learning process. The programme is highly thesis-oriented. The subject matter and methodology courses serve primarily as preparation for an empirical research project. This entails writing a research proposal, conducting the research and completing a thesis, thereby offering you the opportunity to apply your newly acquired insights in a field situation. International students often apply this knowledge in their home country on a topic relevant to their professional interests and preferences. Others choose a relevant topic in their field of interest in various countries around the world, including the Netherlands.

Thesis tracks

Communication and Innovation
In this track, you study communication among stakeholders and disciplines in the context of societal problem solving and change. Special attention is given to the role of communication, knowledge, interpretation and innovation support strategies in bringing about organisational, policy or technological change in societal domains such as sustainable agriculture, health, environment, multifunctional land use and international development.

Technology and Development
The goal of this track is to understand how science and technology interact with international development problems, such as food security, adaptation to climate change and social justice. The approach involves analysis of how technology both mediates and is constituted through social relations and institutional arrangements between various actors including farmers, scientists and policymakers. Most social problems that we face today involves science and technology, either as a cause or as a cure.

Sociology of Development and Change
This track focuses on the understanding of rural development problems worldwide from sociological and anthropological perspectives. Particular attention is paid to how local people themselves solve problems. Field-based studies are the basis for critical reflection on theories of development and social change. Themes addressed include food security, livelihoods in the context of globalisation, poverty and environmental degradation, property rights, conflict, and policy

Your future career

The programme lays the foundations for a variety of career opportunities, usually oriented towards societal problem solving and innovation. You can become a researcher or a knowledge broker who ensures a good fit between client demands and research formulation. You might take on the role of process facilitator or communication specialist in a non-governmental organisation, the public sector or the private industry. A career as a policymaker or consultant in various (inter)national organisations is another option. Organisations where graduates work are for example: UNDP, Tropenbos International, Women for Water, UTZ Certified, George Washington University, UNICEF, Fairfood International.

In his job as Programme Manager for the German Red Cross in Haiti, he works on food security and providing basic services such as water and sanitation to remote communities. “One of my responsibilities is to ensure that technical staff integrate social dimensions into their work and build real partnerships with stakeholders in the field. As a Development and Rural Innovation graduate, I am well prepared for this kind of job and feel confident in it. Key Features of Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care

- According to the requirements of the commissioner this is a closed programme available only to NHS Wales Graduate Trainee Managers, recruited and selected by Academi Wales who lead on the NHS Graduate Management Scheme.

- This programme in Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care will utilise existing research, teaching and practice expertise in health care management, health economics, health service research and health and social policy within Swansea University and draw on local and regional associations and networks within the Health Boards, Local Government and the third sector to enhance ‘real world’ application.

- The MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care is aligned with the NHS Wales Core Competence Framework for Managers and Supervisors (Welsh Government, 2014).

- It is anticipated that all successful MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care graduates (2016-18) will be employed in general management roles within NHS Wales.

The MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care programme is designed to equip NHS Wales Graduate Management Trainees with a critical and analytical understanding of:

- increasing public demands and expectations faced by the NHS and other public services in Wales, the UK and internationally

The Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care course will reflect the imperative of making the most of scarce resources to deliver the best possible outcomes for all. This forms a cornerstone of Prudent Health Principles which are the basis of a cultural shift in health and social care in Wales (Bevan Commission 2015, Bradley & Willson 2014).

A comprehensive knowledge of theories, models and concepts of leadership, management, change and innovation will provide the graduates with the tools to reflect, analyse and critically review their own practice, bringing together academic and experiential learning. Inclusive and collaborative learning will be facilitated through participatory and interactive methods.

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care graduates will be equipped with a sound knowledge and critical understanding of health financing, resource management, improvement science and governance and the principles, methods and application of economic evaluation.

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care Course Structure

The Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care is a two year, part-time course (2016-18). There are six 20 credit modules, each run over eight weeks in part one. Students will have face to face teaching for 25 hours per module. The modules are taught over three residential days in week one of the module, followed up with webinars/seminars in weeks two and three.

Part two consists of a 60 credit dissertation module, and will be completed in the second year.

Careers and Employability

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care students will be employed as trainee general managers in Health Boards across Wales from September 2016 and will have access to a two-year work based learning programme delivered by Academi Wales that will build their core managerial capability, staff engagement skills, financial acumen, and ability to deliver change and improvements. This Master’s award is a component of the NHS Graduate Management Trainee Scheme: trainees will study towards a postgraduate level qualification, the MSc/ PGDip/PGCert Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care.

Successful exit from the training scheme will include the award of MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care.

It is anticipated that all successful MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care graduates from this scheme (2016-18) will be employed in general management roles within NHS Wales.

Participant Profile

The Master in International Business Innovation (IMBI) seeks to develop the capabilities and skills of companies staff from different sectors and departments to enable them to respond to the new challenges they face in the current society. An environment that has suffered a structural change needs a different, more entrepreneurial approach.

Therefore, this program is designed for professionals, entrepreneurs, managers, students, and everyone who wants to acquire a new vision and dimension of the current environment and needs to consolidate and develop an innovative mindset to create and manage a business through an innovative leadership.

Final Project

Throughout the Master in International Business Innovation (IMBI) you will develop all your skills, competencies and your entrepreneurial sense, having to design and develop a Business Innovation Plan, which should be viable in the current market. The Business Innovation Plan will be done in work teams.

Therefore, our goal is that as you go through the master you could be able to consolidate the knowledge learned in your project. Along the master are three mentoring sessions held by experts, who provide guidance and support to project development.

Finally, at the end of the master each team will make a presentation of their project in front of a panel of specialists and experts, who will evaluate them.

ECTS Educational System

The Master in International Business Innovation (MBI) is regulated by the European Credit Transfer System, a system which measures and values the required work to be done by the students in order to acquire all the necessary competences, knowledge, and skills to overcome the different subjects of the Master.

This master has a total of 60 ECTS, equivalent to 1500 hours of student involvement of which 15 ECTS correspond to the completion of the final Master project.

Methodology of the Master

The methodology of the Master in International Business Innovation (MBI) is based on active participation of students through our online Campus in many activities, such as analysis and resolution of real business experiences and case studies. Therefore our methodology is based on “learning by doing” methodology.

A new environment requires new ways to the learn and at Barcelona Executive Business School, if we are different in anything, it is concretely in this.

This program is not intended to theorize about innovation but learn to innovate by focusing the effort on optimizing solutions that had a strong impact on society. Innovation involves adaptation, and this is precisely what this program pursues. We provide participants with methodologies, tools, and criteria so that they can manage any aspect in their business.

Furthermore, the master requires a combination of individual and team work, analyzing and resolving different activities, real business experiences, case studies, business simulations, forums, discussions, etc. Not to mention the final Project of the master, which is the backbone of this Master.
