The Master of Research (MRes) in Health and Wellbeing examines avoidable health problems associated with poor lifestyles and socio-economic inequalities.

On completion of this programme, you will:

- understand the social science underpinning the development of effective interventions, strategies, and policies aimed at (i) sustainable improvements in health and well-being and (ii) reducing physical and psychological health inequalities.

- have an interdisciplinary understanding of the links between social, biological and environmental factors and individual health behaviours, choices, and outcomes.

South West Doctoral Training Centre

This MRes is accredited by the Economics & Social Research Council (ESRC), specifically, as part of the larger South West Doctoral Training Centre (SWDTC) (http://www.bath.ac.uk/hss/graduate-school/study-with-us/south-west-doctoral-training-centre/). It is a collaborative, interdisciplinary programme, delivered by all three universities (Bath, Bristol and Exeter), building on the research strengths of each institution through the inclusion of collaborative units (delivered jointly by the three institutions).

The MRes can be taken as a course in its own right, or as part of the 1 + 3 (MRes + PhD) pathway, which includes further collaborative elements with the universities of Bristol and Exeter.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of this programme, successful graduates could proceed onto an MPhil or PhD in one of several areas/departments, specifically:

- Department of Education
- Department for Health
- Department of Psychology
- Department of Social & Policy Sciences

About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This programme of study, skills development and placement experience allows you to build upon a first degree in biosciences, life sciences or health sciences in order to function as a qualified physician associate.

The programme teaches you to assess, diagnose and manage medical problems competently, consulting with patients presenting with a variety of specified conditions on behalf of, and under supervision of, a senior experienced doctor.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to deliver holistic medical care and treatment to a standard defined by the National Examination for Physician Associates, which will enable you to work in either Primary or Secondary Care.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The programme consists of eight taught modules.

On successful completion of the programme, students will receive a Post Graduate Diploma in Physician Associate Studies, but will also need to sit a National Examination comprising a written paper and OSCE examination, set by the Faculty of Physician Associates at the Royal College of Physicians, in order to be able to practise in the NHS.

On passing the National Examinations, the graduate can be registered on the National Register (currently a Voluntary Register but awaiting accreditation and appointment of a Regulatory Body). The graduate can only work as a physician associate in the NHS if he/she is on this National Register. WHAT IS A PHYSICIAN ASSOCIATE?

Physician associates support doctors in the diagnosis and management of patients. As a physician associate, you might work in a GP surgery or be based in a hospital, but wherever you work, you'll have direct contact with patients.

You’ll be trained to perform a number of day-to- day tasks including:

-Diagnosing illnesses

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Following successful graduation from this Diploma course, you will need to sit the National Assessment for Physician Associates, set by the Faculty of Physician Associates at the Royal College of Physicians, London.

Passing the National Assessment will allow you to be put onto the National Register for Physician Associates, so that you can practise clinically in the UK.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

- Master of Public Health (MPH)

The Master of Public Health was introduced at King's in 2002 to satisfy the need for a modern generic public health masters programme aimed at assisting public health professionals to prepare for management and leadership roles. The MPH is aimed at graduates or holders of a relevant professional qualification, whether medical or non-medical, who are working or intend to work in the broad field of public health.

The curriculum was originally based on that of the Faculty of Public Health but it has a stronger emphasis on prevention and the broader determinants of health.
Since the Programme’s introduction, elective modules have been developed in Toxicology and Health Protection Science to better meet the needs of those working in health protection and environmental health. Other elective modules have been introduced more recently e.g. in the areas of Health Psychology and Global Public Health.

The orientation is towards high income countries and most subjects are taught in a UK context, though we take many students from overseas.

- MPH (Primary Care)

In September 2012, the highly regarded MSc in Primary Health Care merged with the Master of Public Health programme, reflecting the newly combined Department of Primary Care and Public Health Sciences. This has ensured the continued viability of the Primary Health Care programme and enhanced the learning opportunities available to students; ensuring they continue to reflect the demands of practice.

The roles undertaken by GPs, and other members of the Primary Care team have continued to develop and the Health and Social Care Act 2012 introduced further changes to the organization and delivery of healthcare. GPs are playing a central role in these reforms, which include the establishment of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), with implications for education and training. Furthermore, the requirement of appraisals and advent of revalidation will mean that continuing professional development is ongoing. The MPH (Primary Care) programme will provide the opportunity to fully integrate policy, theory and excellence in practice.

- Course purpose -

The MPH aims to provide graduates (or holders of a relevant medical or non-medical professional qualifications), with the academic background required for leadership roles in public health. The MPH (Primary Care) specialty aims to enable health professionals involved in primary health care provision to develop both personally and professionally.

- Course format and assessment -

Specialist lectures; interactive seminars and workshops; project work; computer-based and problem solving exercises; case-study group work. A wide variety of assessment methods, including: conventional unseen essay-type examinations; short answer examinations; case studies; and conventional essays, poster and oral presentations and mini-projects.

- Purpose -

The course aims to develop analytical, communication, leadership and management skills necessary to operate at a professional level. These will prepare and enable practitioners to develop and lead population-based activities designed to tackle inequalities in health, prevent ill health and to work in partnership with individuals, families, communities and multidisciplinary public health workforces.

- Format and assessment -

Format

What can I do next?

The course enables those who are not currently working in mainstream public health to enter the field, for example those who work in a health-related clinical setting will be better placed to switch to public health work.

The programme will develop a more strategic understanding and, as such, it is a useful qualification for those who are interested in managerial or senior roles that are concerned with health and wellbeing in health care, social care, education, business or the voluntary sector.

This MA degree programme is designed for students who wish to explore the social dimensions of risk and resilience. The Department of Geography is especially well-suited to examine these in relation to security- and health-related risk, but students are encouraged to develop their thinking in relation to any aspect of risk, including, for example, climate risk and disaster risk reduction. For students interested in security-related risk, the MA programme offers in-depth and advanced understanding on geo-political security challenges and politics, including the ways in which they are governed increasingly through the prism of risk. The course responds to the growing realisation that many risks are being created through social processes bound to questions of security, including the ways that risk techniques are emerging and being employed as a means of securing uncertain futures. Since the 9/11 attacks in New York City and the 7/7 bombings in London, governments have become more concerned with terrorist threats to security. Surveillance has become more commonplace, preventing some risks while also creating new ones never before seen in society.

For students interested in health-related risk, the MA programme offers advanced training in research methods on the determinants of health and well-being, and their implications for health policy and service provision. Led in part by experts in population health from a social science and public health perspective, the MA programme responds to the observation that we often overlook the critical role played by communities in creating and managing risks, and that we need to develop new approaches to building community resilience. Students learn about the 'social determinants' associated with public health risks including unemployment and poverty. The socioeconomic impacts of financial crises, for example, have large implications for public health risk creating new challenges for research and governance. Students will be trained in both quantitative and qualitative methods to learn how to produce evidence relating to the wider determinants of health that is likely to benefit population health. Graduates from this programme will be well-suited to the needs of social and community work, to health professionals, and the pursuit of research degrees.

Learning and Teaching

Understanding and managing risk is ultimately about choice. All elements of society, from individuals to governments, must make decisions – conscious or not – about the ways in which they perceive, interpret, balance, and mitigate risk. Risk permeates our day-to-day lives in ways that are now recognised to be much more complex than the hazard-vulnerability paradigm, which dominated risk research until the 1990s, recognised. A deeper understanding of the nature of risk, its emergence, and its interface and position within societies, has emphasised the need to take a much more complex view in which a general understanding of the ways in which risk is generated, experienced and managed needs to be combined with a specific understanding of particular science or policy areas.

The primary aim of this Masters programme is to equip students with a general understanding of risk; whilst simultaneously providing specific training in elements of risk-related research. This will be achieved through an interdisciplinary framework for understanding risk from a variety of perspectives. Students will learn theoretical and practical approaches to identifying and framing risk, as well as the underlying physical and social mechanisms that generate it. They will also examine the relationship of risk to knowledge and policy, and will be made aware of the array of advanced tools and techniques to assess the physical and social dimensions of risk under conditions of uncertainty. They will also be trained in the substance and methods associated with a range of science and policy areas, and be expected to demonstrate that they can combine their general training in risk with their specific understanding of the substance and method associated with the chosen area, through either a research-based or a vocational dissertation.

All students will undertake a suite of core modules (120 credits) which provide students with a range of skills and knowledge which result in a unique focus in risk combined with training in interdisciplinary research methods. These modules are: Understanding Risk, Fundamentals of Risk Research, Risk Frontiers and the Dissertation.

This programme explores the issues that shape population health and build the knowledge and skills necessary to address them.

Over the course of the last decade global health has received dramatically increased attention, both as an emergent academic discipline and in terms of heightened policy salience.

Global health concerns have become a central component of foreign and security policy and of development and human rights agendas, and have reshaped debates regarding the social impacts of global economic and environmental change.

Finding answers to the key questions confronting global health policy and practice is vital. Through this programme you will explore the issues that shape population health and build the knowledge and skills necessary to address them.

From the impact of globalisation and the recent development of influential global health partnerships to the complex relationships between health objectives and the trade policies of leading states, you’ll learn to understand, critically appraise and apply key concepts and theories within policy studies, international political economy and public health science.

Situated within the Global Public Health Unit, this programme offers innovative research-led teaching that draws on academic expertise from disciplines including public health, political science, social policy, economics, medicine, epidemiology, geography and anthropology.

Our location within the Graduate School of Social and Political Science gives students access to an academically challenging but friendly and supportive environment and to diverse postgraduate courses offered in one of Europe’s leading centres of social science research.

You will complete one compulsory course and a number of option courses.

Following the taught courses, you will work towards an independently researched dissertation.

We have structured the programme to enable you to undertake a placement during your dissertation.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this programme you will be able to understand, critically appraise and apply key concepts and theories within policy studies, international political economy and public health science with specific reference to social and economic determinants of population health status; public health policy norms; concepts of epidemiology and research methods; and processes and institutions of public policy-making.

You will also develop the skills to:

apply social science perspectives to public health questions
assess the changing context of public health policy formulation
analyse diverse source materials and apply to public health questions
articulate your own conception of core challenges confronting public health
engage in public health advocacy
work across disciplinary boundaries

-You will develop the capacity to think critically about the potential risks of globalising notions of mental illness. You will gain the skills to develop and implement policies aimed at reducing the burden of mental health difficulties worldwide.
-Opportunities exist for students to complete placements with a NHS service that supports the mental health needs of refugees and asylum seekers in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
-The MSc mental health course will help you develop the knowledge to integrate your intitiatives into the wider aims of international development, and address the global ineuities in the provision of mental health services.
-The learning outcomes (ILOs) for the programme are based on the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health that were identified in a 2011 issue of Nature.
-We have collaborative partnerships with organisations working in low and middle income countries. You will have opportunities to complete placements and projects with them.
-Students will have an opportunity to complete research projects with organisations doing mental health related work both nationally and internationally.
-The MSc Global Mental Health programme at the University of Glasgow places specific emphasis on the important role that social and cultural factors play in how mental health difficulties can be understood and treated across the globe.
-Contributors to the MSc Global Mental Health teaching come from a diverse range of disciplines including: clinical psychology, social work, anthropology, sociology, law and psychiatry. Teaching also includes contribution from those with a lived experience of mental health difficulties.
-The Global Mental Health programme at the University of Glasgow has a formal collaboration with the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Rwanda. This partnership has fostered a range of research and teaching activities that have been jointly coordinated by staff at the respective universities. It is hoped that this partnership will continue to grow and that MSc Global Mental Health students will avail of opportunities that it provides.
