The course is designed to meet the needs of those working in health and welfare services as practitioners, managers or administrators.

The student group is therefore multidisciplinary, and most course members combine study with full-time work. The course is also suitable for graduates with a research interest in the changing nature of health and social care in the new mixed economy of welfare.

The course has recently been re-validated and re-focused. It now offers increased opportunities for you to combine your study of health and social policy with specialist modules in evaluation, management, social work practice, regeneration or public health.

Your learning is structured around weekly contact time with the teaching team and is complemented by your independent work based on guidance supplied in lectures, group work, and interactive workshops. Blended learning, enquiry based learning and problem based learning will be used to help you comprehend theoretical concepts.

You are assessed via essays, seminar papers, mini-projects, reports and management exercises.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

This programme is designed to meet the needs of existing or aspiring managers in a wide variety of health or social care organisations (including the voluntary or independent sector) who wish to develop strategic management skills.

Participants come from a wide range of organisations and backgrounds, and this facilitates learning with and from other managers. The content allows you to explore a number of management areas depending on your development needs and role in the organisation. You may be a first line manager such as a team leader or you may be in a more senior role but may not previously have undertaken a formal management development programme.

The programme equips you to manage effectively within your organisation and offers you the opportunity to further your career in a management field. The applied nature of the programme provides flexible opportunities to integrate theoretical learning with application to your management practice, developing your skills and knowledge in order to add value within your organisation in today’s rapidly changing environment.

You will critically evaluate strategic and operational approaches to management and reflect critically on management practice within your organisation. You will be able to directly apply your learning to your current and future roles.

Health Care Management Course Structure

Lectures are interactive with students encouraged to contribute their own experience of working in health care and related settings. In addition to lectures course modules include workshops, group discussions, team exercises and student led presentations.

Full-time students will study for 13 months, attending taught modules from October to Easter (part one). Part two is undertaken through the completion of a dissertation which must be submitted by 30th September of the same year.

Part-time students will study the part one modules one day a week over two years (Typically in year one students attend October to Easter on Tuesdays and in year two October to December on Thursdays. Year two January to Easter is modular and the day of attendance will depend on the module selected.), Dissertations must be submitted by 30th September of the third year.

The MSc Health Care Management comprises two parts.

Part one is taught through five compulsory modules and a choice of two optional modules.

Part two requires completion of a dissertation - This independent directed module can only be taken on successful completion of all of the taught modules.

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care Course Structure

The Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care is a two year, part-time course (2016-18). There are six 20 credit modules, each run over eight weeks in part one. Students will have face to face teaching for 25 hours per module. The modules are taught over three residential days in week one of the module, followed up with webinars/seminars in weeks two and three.

Part two consists of a 60 credit dissertation module, and will be completed in the second year.

Careers and Employability

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care students will be employed as trainee general managers in Health Boards across Wales from September 2016 and will have access to a two-year work based learning programme delivered by Academi Wales that will build their core managerial capability, staff engagement skills, financial acumen, and ability to deliver change and improvements. This Master’s award is a component of the NHS Graduate Management Trainee Scheme: trainees will study towards a postgraduate level qualification, the MSc/ PGDip/PGCert Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care.

Successful exit from the training scheme will include the award of MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care.

It is anticipated that all successful MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care graduates from this scheme (2016-18) will be employed in general management roles within NHS Wales.

MDT Working For Risk Management – examines key features and challenges to interprofessional working and collaboration, how to effectively co-ordinate inter-disciplinary teams and the influence of policy, guidelines and work dynamics.
Leadership, Quality, Innovation and Change – aims to develop the skills and knowledge required by health care professionals to creatively lead the cultural change required to place patients and clients at the centre of care delivery.

Approximately 80% of GP consultations, 60% of days spent in hospital and two thirds of all emergency hospital admissions are associated with chronic conditions (Department of Health 2004).

Managing long term and chronic conditions currently accounts for almost 70% of the NHS budget and these costs are projected to increase significantly given the ageing population and escalating risk factors such as obesity and inactivity.

Long term and chronic conditions can have profound and far reaching implications on all aspects of peoples’ lives and can present patients (and families) with a spectrum of needs.

People living with a long term or chronic condition require support, care and rehabilitation from a wide range of professionals in health, social and voluntary care sectors. In addition, effective health promotion, prevention, self-care and self-management will help ensure that chronic illnesses are avoided wherever possible and that people are more informed to safely and effectively manage their health and wellbeing.

This requires complex responses over extended periods of time, coordinated, proactive and collaborative input from the health, social care and voluntary sectors, patients, carers and lay personnel (as in the Expert Patient Programme). Social Research Methods Course Structure

Teaching is in the form of lectures, seminars, group-project work and individual study. All Social Research Methods students are assigned a Personal Tutor and Dissertation Supervisor appropriate to their chosen area of study.

The Social Research Methods course is made up of six 20-credit modules (Part 1) and a 60-credit dissertation (Part 2).

Who should apply?

The Social Research Methods course is suitable for:

- students who want to prepare themselves for the challenge of MPhil or PhD study; who are already professionally involved in working with people in the social sector and want to develop their own skills and professional expertise
- students from different academic disciplines who are interested in conducting social research and are interested in seeking employment or already have employment in both public and private sectors
- previous students are those with backgrounds in social policy, sociology, law, criminology, human geography, politics, arts and humanities, ageing studies , psychology and health science
- anyone wanting to add a valuable qualification as part of developing a full academic career
- anyone who is interested in society, social behaviour, and social change and would like to learn more
- anyone working in, or wishing to work in, government or voluntary organisations, and commercial areas where social research is undertake

Career Prospects

Past Social Research Methods students have gone on to be employed in public and private sectors, research work, PhD , vocational work, the criminal justice system, social work, environmental health, teaching, local government, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) and health and social care.

Staff Expertise

Contributing lecturers are renowned nationally and internationally. For example, Professor David Hughes has published on the universal coverage healthcare reforms of Thailand and Turkey, Debbie Jones jointly led on The Student Sex Workers' project from Swansea University's Centre for Criminal Justice and Criminology.

The MSc Social Research methods is serviced by research active staff, many of whom are leaders in their field of research. The team has strong links with Criminology whose staff have been awarded Howard league Research Medal 2013 for work on the Swansea Bureau Youth Scheme. Lecturers from the course also include those from the world renowned Centre for Innovative Aging and also Human Geography.

Mature Applicants

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

You can select modules from across our wide range of postgraduate health and social care courses. Modules are delivered in six full-day workshops across the year, meaning your course can fit around your job.

You'll take part in interactive workshops and discussion groups, deliver group projects and even experience simulated practice sessions, to develop your own unique perspectives on current approaches to social care.

Mark Williams has worked for our University for six years as a Lecturer Practitioner and now as a Senior Lecturer, providing specialist knowledge on mental health issues. Experienced in staff development and training, his specific interests focus on developing skills in stress management and resilience in the workplace, and the use of supervision in staff development. Mark uses his broader knowledge of health and social care organisations, as well as voluntary sector providers, to inform his approach to teaching and facilitate learning.

In a globalised and interdependent world, these issues can only be understood from an international perspective which accounts for these common pressures and processes, but which also recognises and engages with the diversity of national traditions and institutions for delivering welfare.

The International Social Policy programme takes a policy analytic approach to provide you with an advanced understanding of current debates, theories and concepts relevant to international social policy. You learn about the common features of social policy arrangements internationally and the variety and differences that characterise welfare across the countries and regions of the world. Drawing on the research-based expertise available at SSPSSR which relates to countries ranging from China, South Korea and Singapore in South East Asia to the UK, Germany and Sweden in Western Europe, you are equipped to understand how national and global forces interact to shape trajectories of welfare system development.

The programme enables you to apply theories and methods of social policy in exploring enduring cross cutting themes in social policy, including the prioritisation of equality and capabilities, as well as to drill down to how and why policy unfolds in key welfare fields. You develop policy analytic skills in relation to such areas as health, migration, pensions, education, social care, and children & family related policy. You acquire expertise in the use of primary and secondary data collection in areas pertaining to all these aspects of social policy, and are thus equipped to think critically about the development of social welfare systems in a global age across the full range of national contexts and policy situations.

About the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research

SSPSSR has a long and distinguished history, and is one of the largest and most successful social science research communities in Europe.

Course structure

We place considerable emphasis on structured, interactive seminars with a high degree of student participation. You also join the staff/graduate seminars which allow MA and research students to become involved in a professional research culture.

The programme gives you a clear and confident grasp of social policy in developed and developing countries. You gain an advanced understanding of the relevant debates, theories and concepts of international issues alongside skills in research design and data collection.

Assessment

Modules combine various forms of coursework; a research dissertation also acts as a modular component of the course in its own right.

- impart country-specific as well as cross-national empirical and theoretical knowledge of current challenges and processes of transformation of welfare systems

- enable you to apply theories and methods of social policy in exploring specific policy fields such as health, migration, pensions, education, social care, poverty and social exclusion, urban development, and family policy

- develop your skills in research design and data collection in areas pertaining to social policy

- familiarise you with using primary and secondary data to develop cutting-edge research in the field of international social policy.
