What's so good about MSc Computing at Dundee?

This course is highly flexible, adapting to your skill level to create a programme tailored to suit you. We encourage a professional, inter-disciplinary and user-centred approach to software design and production, and will enable you to develop the skills so that you can undertake a major software development project.

In keeping with our theme of flexibility, this course offers its students a wide choice of individual projects to choose from.

Our facilities

You will have 24-hour access to our award winning and purpose-built Queen Mother Building. It has an unusual mixture of lab space and breakout areas, with a range of conventional and special equipment for you to use. It's also easy to work on your own laptop as there is wireless access throughout the building. Our close ties to industry allows us access to facilities such as Windows Azure and Teradata, and university and industry standard software such as Tableau for you to evaluate and use.

How you will be taught

We know how important it is to be at the leading edge of computing and so you will learn from research-active staff in the School of Computing. Leading researchers teach you and small class sizes mean that they really get to know you, making for an informal and supportive community.

Industrial collaboration is part of our ethos too, so we regularly include guest experts from industry.

What you will study

You select six taught modules, three per semester, during the period September-April. You will make module selections with your advisor, and this will be partially dictated by your background and previous study.

The typical list for students with limited computing background is shown *. Any module which has a significant overlap with your previous education will be disallowed, for students with a computing-related degree this will usually include most of the modules shown +.

Subject to examination performance, you then progress to the MSc project which runs from May to September, or to a Diploma project lasting 9 weeks.

Please note that some of the modules in the programme are shared with other masters programmes and some of the teaching and resources may be shared with our BSc programme. These joint classes offer a valuable opportunity to learn from, and discuss the material with, other groups of students with different backgrounds and perspectives.

How you will be assessed

The taught modules are assessed by continuous assessment plus end of semester examinations in December and March/April. The project is assessed by dissertation.

Coursework is often very practical, eg writing computer programs, designing interfaces, writing reports, constructing web sites, testing software, implementing databases, analysing problems or presenting solutions to clients.

We will develop your understanding of core and foundation subjects such as English, mathematics and science so that you can confidently teach these subjects across the 5-11 age range. At the same time, we will build your knowledge of how children learn so that you can create tailored and effective lessons.

The most effective teachers not only possess strong teaching skills but see themselves as researchers, constantly looking at new practices and assessing their own teaching methods. Self-analysis will be a fundamental aspect of your training. You will observe a learning environment and then evaluate it, unpicking different elements to develop your understanding of diverse teaching practices and techniques. We will organise your extensive school placements so you can apply your knowledge in a classroom setting and your placements will be timetabled to fit with your taught seminars on campus.

School Direct: For the vast majority of your course, you will be based in your provider school or schools, learning on the job while being supported by experienced teachers and mentors. You will attend our Headingley Campus one day a week (usually a Friday) for key module seminars.

We have more than 100 years' experience of teacher training and you'll be supported by an experienced course team determined to see you flourish as an innovative primary school teacher. You will become part of a supportive teaching and learning community, where you will be able to pick up advice and tips from your course tutors and share ideas on lesson plans and classroom experiences with your fellow students.

Most lecturing takes place during the first two to three weeks of each semester, so you’ll have the autonomy to study in your own way and work on practical projects. You can either study the MSc full-time, for one year, or take an optional professional placement and complete the course in two years. The placement offers paid, practical experience in an industrial or commercial environment. About the department

The new Department of Computer Science began life in August 2001, emerging from the Computing Group of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. It is a research-led department with a strong record in interdisciplinary research and postgraduate teaching.

Who is it for?

This course is for professional engineers who want to specialise in structural engineering or move into this area of expertise to advance their career. Normally students have an undergraduate degree in engineering or a related discipline. Students who don’t have qualifications in civil engineering usually have relevant work experience in civil engineering structures so they are familiar with working within the specific technical domain.

Objectives

From analysing how carbon nanofibers can reduce the effect of corrosion in concrete to gaining insight from experts developing the new Forth Bridge, this MSc in Civil Engineering Structures has been designed to be broad in scope so you can develop your own area of structural engineering expertise.

As a department, we have broad interests from defining new structural forms to practical application of new materials. We believe civil engineering is a creative and collaborative profession, as much as a technical one. This course gives you the tools to immerse yourself in both the analytical and experimental side of the subject, so you can investigate diverse problems to generate your own structural solutions.

The Civil Engineering Structures MSc mirrors industry practice, so you will work in groups with your peers from the first term onwards and learn from a group of world-leading engineers with diverse research strengths. From earthquake engineering to sustainable construction, you have the opportunity to learn in breadth and depth using high-end industry software to develop safe solutions for real-world projects.

Academic facilities

There is a large dedicated lab on site equipped with facilities to investigate different structures and construction materials from concrete to timber. You also have access to other workshops where you can liaise with mechanical or electrical engineers to develop innovative scale models. There is access to specialist soil labs and large-scale equipment including wind tunnels.

We have an extensive library housing all the references, journals and codes of practice that you will need during your studies.

As part of the University of London you can also become a member of Senate House Library for free with your student ID card.

Teaching and learning

You will be taught by the staff team within the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering and also from visiting industry experts from around the world.

Teaching mainly takes the form of lectures, but IT sessions and seminars also form part of the Masters degree. Modules are shared between two ten-week teaching terms running from October to December and January to March. Although work for the MSc dissertation starts during the second term, you will conduct most of the research work during the summer months.

The length of the full-time degree is 12 months. A part-time route is also available where you can spend either two or three years completing the programme. If you follow the two-year part-time study route, you will need to attend lectures for up to two days each week. Alternatively, you can complete the degree over three years by attending a single day each week. The timetable has been designed to offer flexibility for part-time students.

In the first term you will consider core technical topics and be introduced to new concepts such as structural reliability. In the second term you will begin to focus your studies by selecting your dissertation topic and by selecting options getting involved in a specific areas of your own interest. Spread over the year you will have design presentations, class tests and reports.

If you select an experimental dissertation you will have the opportunity to use a range of materials. Skilled technical support is available in the workshop and you have access to recently refurbished facilities, including specialist geotechnical labs which accommodate a large flexible laboratory space used for centrifuge model preparation and testing. Adjacent to this you have concrete mixing and casting facilities, a temperature-controlled soil element testing laboratory and a concrete durability laboratory.

Assessment

For the theoretical modules, you will be assessed through a combination of examinations and coursework. Examinations are shared between the January and April/May examination periods. For the design-oriented modules you are normally assessed by coursework only, where you will work both in groups and individually on challenging projects.

There are six core modules which give you a strong technical foundation and three elective modules from which you can choose two. These reflect the specialist expertise on offer within the academic team. These modules will give you unique insight into computer analysis of structures for blast and fire, bridge engineering, and earthquake analysis where you may look at techniques for analysing structures and safe design. In the final part of the programme you undertake a dissertation in which you can explore an area of interest from a proposed list of themes, some of which are industry-related.

Who is it for?

The course is for motivated students who enjoy working within high-pressure environments often to tight deadlines. You will need a good undergraduate degree as well as the tenacity and patience to understand business systems and the ability to adapt to constant change.

Objectives

There is a common misconception in building business systems: that users know their requirements. Often they don’t. This postgraduate Business Systems Analysis programme has been designed to address this problem.

The MSc in Business Systems Analysis and Design is not about developing algorithms and coding. We work with technology but we are not technicians because we know that to become an IT consultant or business analyst, you need to understand the disparate areas that make up the discipline. This is a Masters degree where you will design a business system; in order to do this you will unpick the information infrastructure to find out if the system works.

Analysing a business system is a process that demands constant re-evaluation. By investigating system requirements, considering how information flows through it, and exploring the pitfalls that emerge within user hierarchies, at City we examine the business system as a whole. This approach is essential to respond to rapid business change.

These are some of the questions the course poses:
-What is the right system to address the problem?
-Does the system meet the needs of the business now and will it be able to adapt in the future?
-How is information flowing within the system?
-How will users interact with the system throughout the project life cycle?

Placements

As a student on this programme you can undertake an internship in the July to December period, for up to six months. You can work under a client’s direction for all or part of this time. Many students use the internship as an opportunity to carry out a specific project which forms the context for their final dissertation.

One current student is working within a user experience design company to investigate how scents affect the emotional perception of digital fruit images displayed on a desktop service.

Academic facilities

As a student on the MSc Business Systems Analysis and Design course you will have access to dedicated labs and use specialist software such as SAP. At City we also have access to Microsoft Dynamics ERP software to support the enterprise information system module. Microsoft Dynamics is an industry-based CRM system. As part of the University of London you can also become a member of Senate House Library for free with your student ID card.

Teaching and learning

We provide a diversity of teaching approaches so you get a diversity of learning experiences in the form of traditional lectures, live classroom demonstrations, tutorials, laboratories, and TV studio role-playing. We encourage you to engage with the material in an active way. As a postgraduate student, we expect you to take responsibility for your own learning and use non-timetabled hours for your own private study or group interactions.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways from coursework and laboratory work to presentations, examinations and a project dissertation. By successfully completing eight taught modules and the research project you will be awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree. All modules in this course are supported by Moodle, City's online learning environment.

The course is available full time (12 months) and part time (up to 28 months - two days a week). The Department is aware that this involves considerable commitment from part-time students, and we try to be as flexible as we can so you can successfully combine your work and study.

By completing eight modules and the dissertation you will be awarded 180 credits and a Masters level qualification. Alternatively, if you do not complete the dissertation but have successfully completed the eight modules, you will be awarded 120 credits and a postgraduate diploma. If you successfully complete four modules (60 credits) you will be awarded a postgraduate certificate.

Modules

There are six core modules and four electives from which you can choose two topics. Practical work is emphasised throughout the degree programme to develop your understanding and skills, which is strengthened by interactive teamwork. The course has an excellent track record in producing employable hybrid IT/business professionals.

In the industry you need to communicate your expertise in lay terms. The modules give you experience in working on group projects so you can manage roles and responsibilities and build a set of professional values. The core content will also give you the ability to set strategies, manage information flows and deal with problems such as overload and risk.

-The specialist understanding of theoretical principles in business systems analysis and design.
-Technical skills, through practical laboratory work, so you can apply your knowledge of IT and how it affects business competitiveness.

The rationale for the course is based on the recognition that the effectiveness of all IT Services is a vital aspect to the prosperity of any organisation. The course embraces best practice from leading service providers, and by continual reassessment, ensures all material is relevant to today’s computing and management expectations.

The course encompasses IT Service Management through a series of progressive units developing the student’s knowledge from fundamental concepts, through to units addressing IS strategy. As an MSc International Business single award student, you will have several study options, so you can shape your experience around your ambitions, interests and commitments. 

Our standard master's involves rigorous core studies here at the Business School, followed by a term studying abroad at one of our partner institutions (ISCTE in Lisbon, Portugal; KEDGE in Marseille, France; ESC Clermont in France, or Brescia University in Italy). This is followed by a major project, at home or abroad.

International travel is a key element of this qualification, but we know some students may not be able to leave the UK for so long, so we also offer a stay-at-home route, involving more study here with us. All students are offered the chance to go on a two-week study tour, so it's hoped that stay-at-home students will take this shorter opportunity to gain international perspectives up close.

Study tour

The study tour takes place each year, meaning that all students, whether they start in September or January, will have the opportunity to take part. The cost of the trip is covered by your tuition fees, and all students will be provided with help and support in applying for the necessary visas.

The destination and style of the trip varies each year, but previous destinations have included Lisbon, Brescia and Venice. 

While abroad you will have the chance to take part in a number of activities, including industry visits, networking opportunities, attending lectures and seminars at a summer school, and of course some sight-seeing. The trip is also normally linked to your consultancy project, giving you the opportunity to meet the organisation you are working for, and present your ideas directly back to them.

The trip has proven itself to be a key factor in the success of the programme, with students benefiting from the business and cultural aspects of it. Some students have also been successful in securing internships with organisations involved.

Teaching and learning methods are centred around interactive workshops which are highly participated in nature and will employ case studies, discussions, business simulations and group activities.

Interactivity is key to our teaching and we are committed to providing courses that adopt teaching methods that are appropriate to the student cohort and the specific modules.

Assessment methods

A range of assessment methods are used across the course, the choice of which reflects the needs and demands of the different types of module. Some modules will assess the ability to work collaboratively in a team and others will assess individual capability. Types of assessment will range from examinations to group presentations including essays, reports, financial analyses, literature reviews and research-based projects.

The interactive nature of the taught sessions offers opportunities to gain feedback on your performance before being formally assessed and increasing use is made of eLearning to further support the feedback process.

Induction

All our courses begin with a comprehensive development programme that will help you prepare for your studies and develop key academic and transferable skills. A key feature is a short residential team-building course, normally in the Peak District.

The store’s upper floor ‘learning zone’ has previously hosted guest speakers from the fashion industry, workshops, photo-shoots and exhibitions – all with an emphasis on developing student retail, enterprise and employability skills.

The course concludes with a final master’s project. This is a chance for students to specialise in an area that suits their unique career ambitions, applying the skills that they have learnt throughout the course. Project supervisors are chosen based on the topic of the dissertation, ensuring that students have one-to-one access to expert support.

Graduation costs -

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. FLEXIBLE CURRICULUM

A ‘tailor-designing’ approach towards education is at the core of how we design programs at HEC Paris. We will help you develop new ways of teaching maths and create stimulating learning environments using teaching methods developed in countries with high achieving maths students.

A key part of your training will be learning how to use geometric tools and devices to teach mathematics, as well as the effective use of interactive white boards and online maths resources. You will also learn how to use traditional textbooks to devise your own teaching resources that will meet the needs of your pupils, regardless of their ability.

We will teach you to think outside of the box when considering how to make mathematics an interesting and relevant subject for your pupils. For example, you will be encouraged to organise external visits to help your pupils understand how maths is used in the real world and to stimulate their interest and excitement in solving mathematical problems.

Aside from developing your ability to teach, you will also hone your communication and interpersonal skills. You will be able to instil confidence in your pupils so they can achieve their potential, and you will learn how to motivate support staff so they can help you deliver outstanding lessons.

We have more than 100 years' experience of teacher training and you'll find an experienced course team ready to bring out your potential as an innovative teacher of maths. You will become part of a supportive teaching community, learning from fellow students and sharing ideas on lesson plans, classroom experiences and teaching tips.

Helping you develop your confidence, identity and teaching style through a critically reflective approach to your practice will be a core element of your course.

To prepare you for your course, you will have the opportunity to attend a residential, where you will meet your tutors and fellow trainees, start to build your support networks and discover how the outdoors can be used to inspire your lessons.

You will gain substantial training in a school environment. Many of the partnership schools are located in and around Leeds, so your travelling will be limited and you will have more time to prepare your lessons. You will complete three teaching placements in at least two contrasting environments, receiving intensive support from your school mentor and University tutors.

You will benefit from the practical experience and theoretical knowledge of your lecturers. Many were school teachers and are now active in educational research.

We will provide on-going training for all newly qualified teachers. On successful completion of your course, you will be able to enrol on our Newly Qualified Teacher module, offering you another important element of support and guidance as you start your teaching career.
