- Advanced studies in design
This pathway allows you to construct, with approval, an individual program of study from across interaction design, multimedia design and collaborative design. This enables you to tailor your unit choices while addressing the fundamental principles of advanced design practice and thinking. It’ll inspire you to connect research and practice across the design disciplines, and to become a thoughtful design practitioner. You’ll broaden your knowledge of key design constructs, deepen your professional learning in design areas of interest, and advance your capacity as a design professional.

- Collaborative design
Collaborative design places you conceptually and practically at the intersection of interior, graphic and industrial design practice. The program will set you design challenges involving image, text, products, narratives, systems, ervices, public and private space, materiality and virtuality. You’ll develop independent conceptual and practical design skills alongside an ability to be part of collaborative design processes. You’ll expand your awareness across design disciplines; develop multidisciplinary design expertise; and build broader skills in leadership, professional adaptability and complex project planning.

- Interaction design
The interaction design specialisation develops your skills in the design of contemporary artefacts, products and services that engage with interactive, user-focused technologies and processes. These can include, but aren’t limited to, health and medical equipment, ‘smart’ furniture, educational toys, wearable technologies, information kiosks and transport systems. You’ll use a diverse range of interactive processes, including the application of advanced technologies; electronics and programming; physical and virtual interface manipulation; engineering and material fabrication; and rapid prototyping. The specialisation gives you an understanding of the relationship between interactive activities, products and human behaviour.

- Multimedia design
Multimedia design develops your skills in digital communication environments. This includes: designing for the web; motion and animation; and interactive touchscreen devices and surfaces. Emphasising an advanced knowledge of existing and emerging digital design processes and systems, this specialisation embraces projects of varied scale, from hand-held smart devices to large public interactive screens. It develops your ability to build a communication narrative; use multimedia processes to fill community and business needs; and understand the end-user’s engagement with projects or products such as websites, apps and other screen-based media.

Course Structure

The course comprises 96 points structured into 3 parts:

Part A. Preparatory Studies for Advanced Design (24 points), Part B. Advanced Design Studies (24 points), and Part C. Advanced Design Applications (48 points).

- Students admitted at Entry level 1 complete 96 points, comprising Part A, B & C
- Students admitted at Entry level 2 complete 72 points, comprising Part B & C
- Students admitted at Entry level 3 complete 48 points, comprising Part C

Note: Students eligible for credit for prior studies may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options. A zero credit point unit in Art, Design and Architecture Occupational Health and Safety will also be undertaken. This unit is required of all students in the Master of Design and must be undertaken even if credit is obtained for Parts A or B.

Part A: Preparatory studies for advanced design
These studies provide you with the conceptual thinking and technical skill set required for advanced postgraduate study in this area. The studio unit brings together conceptual and technical abilities developed in the other two units.

Part B: Advanced design studies
In these studies you will focus on the application of conceptual thinking and technical skills to advanced design problem solving. You will analyse and create a project outcome based on research, critique, and the application of design processes appropriate to your specialisation. You will also choose a selective unit that will further build capacity in your chosen specialisation.

Part C: Advanced design applications
In these studies you will focus on the application of advanced design problem solving skills at a professional level. You will consolidate skills and practice of design research methodologies and may extend your research trajectory to further study. Part C is also supported by a selective unit to allow you to build capabilities in your chosen specialisation.

In the final semester you will pursue a major design project or participate in a leading industry project. The exegesis unit formalises the research component of Part C. The final semester brings together advanced technical ability, conceptual thinking, entrepreneurial studies and design management in practice.

The Master of Interaction Design is a specialised postgraduate coursework degree for students seeking to become interaction designers. The Master course in Smart Buildings and Sustainable Design addresses the issue of sustainability in terms of design strategies that optimize environmental, energy and social behaviors of the urban environment. The course is aimed at embedding interactive and web connected technology with architecture, in order to become aware of what is going on in the surrounding environment and acquire the capability of virtuous reactions.

Sustainable design deals with the challenges and problems of post-industrial polluted cities by combining design and technical skills to outstanding theoretic, critical and cultural knowledge.

Methodology and structure - The course includes different teaching activities: theoric classes, seminars, design workshops, speeches, construction labs.

The first month will be dedicated at introducing students to the skills of the job, including 3d modeling, digital fabrication, Arduino technology and principles of environmental strategies. From the second month and through the next 11 months, students will work on a challenging thesis project that will be presented to a public audience at the end of the Master. During this phase, classes will stimulate students on the topics of Green Energies Design Strategies, Smart Technologies for the Built Environment, Design Rating Systems and Certifications, Big Data, Urban Sharing. All the input coming from these activities will be embedded in the students design work to develop a compelling thesis project.

The MSc in Product Design Engineering aims to:

During this 2 year program, including a final 3 to 6 month internship, students become strong professionals thanks to an intensive project-based pedagogy, and a strong connection with the industry.

By following a carefully selected set of courses covering energy resources (fossil and renewable), conversion technologies, electrical power generation, energy storage technologies, demand management, and energy economics. Graduates of this programme will be confident in all aspects of this subject. With a clear focus on smart Grid and Demand Management the programme provides;
- Knowledge and understanding of advanced scientific and mathematical principles relevant to the understanding, analysis and modelling of a smart grid.
- An understanding of fundamental facts, concepts, and technologies for demand management and energy storage.
- Knowledge and skill to apply engineering principles to design a system, component or process
- An ability to undertake independent research.
- Professional attitudes to implementation of safety and concepts embodied by sustainability.

All aspects of the smart grid are integrated in a dedicated smart grid modelling course, which provides the mathematical and computational skills to model a smart grid. This course is unique to this programme and will give graduates the skills they need to enhance their career prospects.

The Scottish Funding Council has made available 20 scholarships covering fees only to students with Scottish backgrounds. 5 of these places are reserved for applicants to this programme in the first instance. The remaining places are spread over all our Energy based MSc programmes. There is no separate application process for this. If you are eligible, you will be considered automatically. You will be notified through the summer if you have been selected.

This course provides the foundations for the quantitative analysis of energy resources and conversion efficiencies through various technologies. It also places energy production and consumption into the wider field of environmental and socio-economic factors

- B51GE Renewable Energy Technologies
This course introduces the range of Renewable Energy resources together with established and emerging technologies. It provides the skills for a quantitative assessment of the Renewable Energy resources and the expected energy and power output from typical or specific installations.

- B31GA Electrical Power Systems
This course covers the operation of interconnected electrical power systems. Such interconnected power systems combine a number of different components, generators, transmission lines, transformers and motors, which must be appreciated to understand the operation of the interconnected system.

- C21EN Environmental and Energy Economics
This course introduces students to the core concepts and methods of modern economics, and environmental and energy economics in particular.

This course introduces the mathematical skills to model the operation of an electricity or energy network at a statistical and dynamical level, incorporating key elements of a smart grid, including technological constraints, economic drivers and information exchange.

- B31GB Distributed Generation
This course equips students with an understanding of the role of distributed generation in electrical energy networks. It provides students with an overview of distributed generation techniques and describes the contribution of distributed generation to network security. The course introduces the economics of distributed generation and the assessment of distributed generation schemes. It introduces students to the concept of intermittent sources and their contribution to capacity in electrical power systems and provides a detailed review of the reliability, fault and stability studies of distributed generation schemes.

- B51GK Demand Management and Energy Storage
This course provides students with an overview of demand-side management and its contribution to network capacity and security. An individual project led by a research active member of staff or an industrial partner on a topic relevant to smart grid technology, demand management technologies or approaches or smart grid/ electricity / energy systems modelling.

English language requirements

If you are not from a UKBA recognised English speaking country, we will need to see evidence of your English language ability. If your first degree was taught in English a letter from them confirming this will be sufficient. Otherwise the minimum requirement for English language is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students submit a 10,000-word report on a topic related to the main themes of the programme. The topic can be chosen to enhance career development or for its inherent interest.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of interactive seminars, individual and group tutorials, site visits and a residential field trip. Assessment is through unseen examination, coursework, and the built environment report. Joint coursework, including two major low-energy architectural design projects, is carried out by students in multi-disciplinary teams.

Fieldwork
Students will have the opportunity to participate in field trips and site visits including a residential trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology in north Wales. There are no additional cost to students for the field trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology.

Careers

Most students who complete the programme move into, or continue in, a building-related profession, such as architecture, low-energy design consultancy, or building services engineering. As the awareness of global environmental issues increases, the demand for people with expertise in the health and energy performance of buildings is expanding rapidly. The aim of this course to equip you with the behavioural theory, design practice and technology know-how that is necessary for a career as interaction designer, usability engineer, user researcher, or head of user experience. It focuses upon the analysis, design, prototyping and evaluation of multimedia, multi-modal, and multi-platform user interfaces that are easy to use and support a great user experience.

-This course was developed in consultation with our industry panel, which includes Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, DreamWorks and Samsung Design Europe. We are also an active member of TIGA, the British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) and support the User Experience Professionals' Association (UXPA UK).

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.

-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

Introduction

MA Material Futures explores the intersection of craft, science and technology encouraging students to look beyond existing boundaries to anticipate future needs, desires, and challenges. Taking materiality as the starting point of the design process we integrate high and low technological materials and processes, pursuing relevant applications across fashion, architecture, product design, and communication & critical design.

Observing and analysing how we live today allows us to consider how we can live better tomorrow. Considering the current and future context of design decisions is core to our ethos, combining social, political and economic inquiry to inform future, sustainable design applications.

Content

The 21st century marks the beginning of a new textile revolution - one we believe is smart, invisible, sustainable, ethical and poetic.

MA Material Futures is part of the Jewellery and Textiles programme. The MA Material Futures ethos is to approach textile design as a form of industrial design but with a focus on the language and codes inherent to textiles. By exploring key contextual questions to interrogate, critique and propose new design concepts, we invite our designers to engage fully with the challenges of designing for the 21st century. How do we reconcile ecology and smart technology? With current progress in nanotechnologies, how do we engineer invisible functions with new aesthetics? How can biomimicry principles inform the design of resilient textiles? Will scientists become designers? With digital fabrications becoming mainstream, what future for craft? How can textiles lead to the development of smart interactive interface? Can textiles inform a new way to imagine architecture? These are examples of questions MA Material Futures will consider over the two year postgraduate programme.

Smart textiles, invisible performance, sustainable and ethical issues as much as poetics and aesthetics call for new design perspectives. Crossover with other design disciplines as well as with science and socio-economics are more pertinent than ever. Rapid changes in culture, economics and technology need dynamic designers who can propose and realise intelligent, responsible innovations with strategic thought, leadership and personal vision. The MA Material Futures course aims at equipping designers with critical skills to design for our future selves and provides a 'think-tank' in which to cultivate ideas, reflect on individual practice, and challenge the boundaries of textile design.

Structure

MA Material Futures lasts 60 weeks structured as two consecutive periods of 30 weeks each (i.e. two academic years) in its 'extended full-time mode'.

MA Material Futures is credit rated at 180 credits, and comprises 2 units:

Unit 1 (60 credits) lasts 20 weeks
Unit 2 (120 credits) runs for 10 weeks in the first year and 30 weeks in the second year.

Both units must be passed in order to achieve the MA, but the classification of the award of MA derives from your mark for Unit 2 only.
