The compulsory course units in this programme will provide you with a broad overview of managerial issues faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Most management courses and textbooks focus on large businesses. This Master's degree programme highlights the specifics of SMEs, which constitute more than 95% of the business community.

The MSc Business Administration - specialization Small Business Management focuses on the internal organization of a business. Small Business Economics addresses the external positioning, while New Ventures and Entrepreneurship deals with starting businesses.

Programme

The specific organizational characteristics of smaller firms are addressed, basically all subdisciplines of management and organization. Also questions such as 'what is entrepreneurship?', 'am I suitable to be an entrepreneur?' and issues of consultancy are addressed. These are topics in compulsory courses. With electives you specialize in fields like strategy, marketing and management of technology. Furthermore, a part of the programme is devoted to writing a thesis including doing research.

Job perspectives

As a graduate of the programme Small Business and Entrepreneurship, you may find employment in positions like all-round SME manager or SME consultant. You could work for a large organization, selling services to SMEs (like banks and accountancy offices). Becoming an independent entrepreneur is also one of the possibilities. Course content

In year one you’ll explore successful enterprise and entrepreneurship and their role in society worldwide. You’ll explore how enterprise is seen around the world, and how different geographical and economic contexts create challenges for new ventures.

You’ll consider contemporary challenges and debates during guest lectures with successful entrepreneurs, hearing first-hand about their experience of the latest topics. You’ll also have the opportunity to apply what you have learned to your own business idea or an existing business, whilst drawing on their expertise.

In year two, you’ll take an in-depth look at social enterprises and alternative business models, including how best to grow an existing small business.

You’ll also work alongside our full-time students on a consultancy project for a local small-medium enterprise, building relationships with the founders and staff (you can read a student case study about a recent project). Some examples of recent projects include: ‘helping an ethical gifts retailer turn their sales performance around’; ‘undertaking a market and brand analysis for a luxury camping business’ and ‘researching the Jordanian and Indian market for a healthcare software company’.

You’ll be introduced to research methods, developing understanding of how to gain important market insights and analyse the viability of a business idea.

In the final semester of year two, you’ll complete the Enterprise Dissertation, an individual project that can be used to explore opportunities for your own business venture, develop a plan for growth in an existing business you are connected to, or to research in-depth an area of interest.

Part-time study

This part-time course enables existing entrepreneurs to continue to develop their business, whilst professionals and budding entrepreneurs can work alongside their studies. Combining work and study can often be to your advantage, since the experiences gained in your professional life will add depth and relevance.

You’ll study over two years, attending classes for one day per week from late September to early May with one-month breaks at Christmas and Easter. In year one, you'll also study for five days across June and early September. In year two, you’ll attend meetings with your dissertation supervisor from April to September. You can expect to attend for approximately 27 days in year one and 17 days in year two (plus dissertation meetings).

Independent study is also vital to this programme, allowing you to develop your skills and prepare for taught sessions and assessments.

You will be equipped with specialist and in-depth understanding of entrepreneurship and innovation together with practical skills, enhancing your employability.

The course draws upon the highest level of theory and practice in this field and builds on the extensive research and teaching expertise of academics within the School of Management. The content of this course is continually updated to reflect contemporary issues and areas of interest, such as family business management, entrepreneurship and consultancy, and social entrepreneurship.

By choosing to spend a year in business you will also be able to integrate theory and practice and gain real business experience. Teaching & assessment

The courses are interactive, usually offering a lecture-style background of key theories and principles in the first part, and more practical activities, exercises and group discussions in the second part of the lectures. Guest lectures are invited in different classes to give students a real-world experience on entrepreneurship. Participation from students in the classroom is a key principle for learning.

Outside the classroom, in the Autumn Term we organise a field trip to an entrepreneurship hub, and in the Spring term we organise a field trip to a small business. These provide more opportunities to visit and learn from real entrepreneurs in their environment, giving more opportunities to advance their ideas after their studies. In addition, entrepreneurship activities from student societies on campus could be integrated in the teaching process to bridge theory and practice. 

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods. In the classroom, you will engage in a number of activities, simulations, case-study discussions and presentations where you will receive instant feedback from you lecturers.

Formal assessments include coursework in the form of individual or group assignments, but also presentations, posters, or digital media content creation depending on the course. Examinations are towards the May exam period and in-class test could take place during the last weeks of each course.

After the teaching term, students will be allocated a supervisor that will guide them through an Independent Business Research Project. The year-in-business students will be allocated a mentor that will follow their progress and work, assisting them in keeping a log and writing a similar final project. This final project gives an opportunity to test learn concepts and ideas in practice in a real business context via research and analysis.

On graduating with a Masters degree Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Royal Holloway you will be highly employable and have a variety of career paths available, including: product development/research, business planning, growth and operations/strategic management in existing businesses, creating new businesses, providing business support and advice or specialising in entrepreneurship policy, research and education. As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

It offers flexibility with an innovative combination of block and online delivery, making it suitable for those working in the sports sector and recent graduates who are looking to develop their knowledge and understanding of this fast growing and important industry.

Spectator and participatory sport is a global phenomenon and has recently become one of the fastest growing economic sectors for both developed and developing countries. Through engaging with and analysing the commercial, media and political drivers of change, you are able to identify the factors that have created such growth and critically discuss the implications for business, society, nation branding and identity.

Sport is a sophisticated and complex international business with billions of consumers watching and engaging with sporting events on a weekly or even daily basis. This course aims to develop professionals in the provision, promotion and marketing of sport who are able to fully capitalise on the opportunities that the sector presents.

Through studying marketing, sponsorship, media and law – and after spending time in a sports organisation on a professional work placement – you gain academic understanding and practical knowledge of the issues involved in successful sport business management. This will help you to engage, manage and shape the sport businesses of the future.

This course can only be studied with our partner in The Netherlands, the Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences. The course is taught in English and delivered by academics from both the University of Brighton and the Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences.   

Course structure

You will experience a dynamic blend of academic study, research and – through the placement module – hands-on learning. The combination of academic study and practical analysis has been designed to provide greater depth of knowledge and future career success.

Course delivery 

The emphasis of the course is on using a theoretical approach to analyse and evaluate the Sport Business sector. If you are already working in the sector you’ll be able to use your existing knowledge to underpin your studies, whilst if you are a recent graduate there is the opportunity for more supported learning.

All core modules are taught in intensive blocks of two to three days. Depending on the module this could include a combination of university-based teaching, online seminars, tutorial support and webinars. The Professional Enquiry module is a combination of teaching and online tutorials which will support you during an organisational experience or project. Some optional modules will be delivered entirely online and others will be all classroom based.

The flexibility of the teaching method for the Sport Business Management MSc facilitates combining studying for a masters with a professional career. It also means that your commitment to attending the university’s campus may be different from others studying the same course.

What is Business Development?

Students graduating from the MSc Business Development also receive a certificate conferring them the title of Manager International. This title, recognized by the Commission Nationale de la Certification Professionnelle - an agency belonging to the French Ministry of Labor - attests to the successful acquisition of a core of international management skills and knowledge necessary for future roles as managers in an international context. The Manager International label is registered on the Répertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles at Level 1, the highest level for such certification.

At the end of the classroom portion of the program, each student will be required to complete a thesis, known as the Final Management Project. This work is approximately 20,000 words in length and is completed under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study.

This should be business oriented and coherent with your program’s objectives. You may choose to write your Final Management Project on a topic grounded in your internship experience.

During this program, participants will have the opportunity to become real-life business developers by exploring a Live Business Case provided by companies working in partnerships with the MSc Business Development program. The work students do on the Live Business Case is closely linked to the International Study Residency. Students will work in groups, delving deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.

EXPECTATIONS AND OBJECTIVES FOR MSC BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS

The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

The Live Business Case will cover:

- Looking at business development and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective,
- Provide students with a final opportunity to apply learning from the material, courses and lectures that they have studied.

At the conclusion of the Live Business Case, students will be able to:

- Build a company analysis
- Select and apply a methodology, and make useful and efficient recommendations
- Understand the Business Development process
- Provide critical analysis
- Make strategic decisions
- Work in small multicultural groups under time constraints
- Produce compelling written and oral presentations
- Demonstrate communication, negotiation and leadership skills

At the end of 7 months of the Live Business Case, each group will produce a written report and make an oral presentation to the Jury (company tutor, school tutor and program director) and the other groups from the program.

International Residency Trip: An Amazing Opportunity!

As part of the MSc Business Development program, students have the opportunity to visit one emerging economy each year (Brazil, Russia, China, India). The goal is to create an integrated learning experience for all participants.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time.
No prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Non-French speakers may study French, native and fluent French speakers will have the possibility to choose from Spanish or Chinese. The language component is not compulsory.

MANAGERIAL CREATIVITY: A SELF MANAGEMENT METHOD

This course/ work shop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

Are you looking to complement your undergraduate studies with a business-focused master’s degree that will enhance your employability? This two-year course with advanced practice develops broad business skills while also offering a specialist pathway in entrepreneurship that starts after the first semester.

Specialist modules cover the process and practice of entrepreneurship as well contemporary issues in entrepreneurship. You’ll develop your research skills through a dissertation or a master’s project.

In the second year of this course you’ll undertake a hands-on consultancy project or take part in an internship. The course fee is divided evenly between year 1 and year 2. In addition, while you can only work twenty hours per week during term time, you can use the extra vacation periods to travel or work full time and help fund your time in the UK.

There is no requirement to have studied business or entrepreneurship at undergraduate level.

The course is covered by the prestigious AACSB accreditation for Newcastle Business School, which was ‘Business School of the Year’ at The Times Higher Education Awards 2015.

Teaching And Assessment

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops. As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

Teaching is backed up by a well-designed support system that helps ensure a successful learning journey. We make sure that extensive feedback, from both tutors and peers, is built into the course.

During the second year you’ll undertake a project or internship for a whole semester. You’ll follow this up with an Applied Management Work Investigation Report that will critically analyse an issue related to your practical experience.

Our assessment strategy is based on our understanding that everyone has different needs, strengths and enthusiasms. Assessment is based on course work and our methods will include essays, reports, group work, presentations, and the master’s dissertation or consultancy project.

Research-Rich Learning

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

Throughout your course you’ll be an active participant in the on-going research agenda that’s at the heart of Newcastle Business School.
