Course Aims

Preparation for nursing practice encompasses learning in the spheres of knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours. It is recognised that evidence based knowledge is required for safe and effective nursing practice and as such programme content is driven by the NMC Standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education, QAA Academic and Practitioner Standards for nursing alongside the QAA Master’s Degree Characteristics (NMC, 2010; QAA, 2010). The programme builds in terms of academic skill sets, professional responsibility and technical complexity throughout the two years.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be able to:

Entry Requirements

The MSc Nursing, Graduate Entry Nursing (GEN) programme recognises that prior learning and experience is integral to the student’s learning.
Academic Entry requirements:
- A first degree (2:1 or above)

- Applicants must have English and Maths at GCSE or equivalent qualification at grade A - C

- Evidence of recent study (within 5 years)

- We accept applications from candidates who meet residency requirements of UK students. Any overseas qualifications should be equivalent to UK qualifications which meet our entry requirements. If you have completed your degree outside the UK, we will require a clear copy of your degree documentation to ensure NARIC comparability. Please note that all applicants who are invited to interview will be required to present their original degree documentation. IELTS tests will be accepted as an equivalent to GCSE English at grade C. We request IELTS with an overall score of 7 (and a minimum of 7 in all sub-tests).

Teaching & Assessment

As with all our courses, you can expect to experience a stimulating blend of learning activities, from practice learning, simulation, problem based learning, tutorials, lectures and clinical skills workshops through to innovative web-based activities and inter-professional learning.

Each module will encourage you to demonstrate deep learning that includes subject-specific knowledge and transferable skills. Service user involvement in the programme will ensure that the concept of person-centeredness is explicit.

We have a wide variety of innovative assessments that will develop and enhance your graduate skill set. These may include report writing, simulated activities, an MCQ exam, case studies, presentations, designing a renewable learning resource, reflective writing, developing a research proposal to undertaking a Masters dissertation

Additional Costs

Currently course fees are paid for all students who meet the NHS student bursaries eligibility criteria. Currently eligible students will receive a non-means tested grant of £1,000, a means-tested bursary. Additional allowances may be available for students with disabilities and dependents, but you will not be eligible for the Reduced Rate student loan. By following a carefully selected set of courses covering energy resources (fossil and renewable), conversion technologies, electrical power generation, energy storage technologies, demand management, and energy economics. Graduates of this programme will be confident in all aspects of this subject. With a clear focus on smart Grid and Demand Management the programme provides;
- Knowledge and understanding of advanced scientific and mathematical principles relevant to the understanding, analysis and modelling of a smart grid.

The Scottish Funding Council has made available 20 scholarships covering fees only to students with Scottish backgrounds. 5 of these places are reserved for applicants to this programme in the first instance. The remaining places are spread over all our Energy based MSc programmes. There is no separate application process for this. If you are eligible, you will be considered automatically. This course provides the foundations for the quantitative analysis of energy resources and conversion efficiencies through various technologies. It also places energy production and consumption into the wider field of environmental and socio-economic factors

- B51GE Renewable Energy Technologies
This course introduces the range of Renewable Energy resources together with established and emerging technologies. It provides the skills for a quantitative assessment of the Renewable Energy resources and the expected energy and power output from typical or specific installations.

- B31GA Electrical Power Systems
This course covers the operation of interconnected electrical power systems. Such interconnected power systems combine a number of different components, generators, transmission lines, transformers and motors, which must be appreciated to understand the operation of the interconnected system.

- C21EN Environmental and Energy Economics
This course introduces students to the core concepts and methods of modern economics, and environmental and energy economics in particular.

This course introduces the mathematical skills to model the operation of an electricity or energy network at a statistical and dynamical level, incorporating key elements of a smart grid, including technological constraints, economic drivers and information exchange.

- B31GB Distributed Generation
This course equips students with an understanding of the role of distributed generation in electrical energy networks. It provides students with an overview of distributed generation techniques and describes the contribution of distributed generation to network security. The course introduces the economics of distributed generation and the assessment of distributed generation schemes. It introduces students to the concept of intermittent sources and their contribution to capacity in electrical power systems and provides a detailed review of the reliability, fault and stability studies of distributed generation schemes.

- B51GK Demand Management and Energy Storage
This course provides students with an overview of demand-side management and its contribution to network capacity and security. It reviews energy storage technologies and their contribution to the integration of renewable generation and the operation of large-scale electrical network. It introduces students to the methods of interfacing energy storage mechanisms to electrical networks. The course describes the contribution energy storage technology can make to transportation and industry

- B81EZ Critical Analysis and Research Preparation
This course provides research training and addresses literature review skills, project planning, data analysis and presentation with a focus to critically discuss literature, and use data to support an argument.

- B31VZ MSc Project
An individual project led by a research active member of staff or an industrial partner on a topic relevant to smart grid technology, demand management technologies or approaches or smart grid/ electricity / energy systems modelling.

The medical technologies sector is seeing unprecedented growth, with an increasing need for trained professionals with a skill set combining scientific proficiency with entrepreneurial and business flair. This innovative programme, in partnership with the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering, offers a unique graduate pathway into this flourishing sector.

Degree information

This programme combines medical device scientific research and development with training in translation techniques, enterprise and entrepreneurship. Students will learn about entrepreneurial finance and gain knowledge in business management, while carrying out technical research that will give them a solid grounding in medical device development. The programme provides the essential skills to move forward in the medical device sector.

Students take modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of two core modules (30 credits), two optional modules (30 credits), and a dissertation/report (120 credits).

-Two skill modules with an emphasis on entrepreneurship based in UCL School of Management.

Optional modules
-Two scientific modules will be chosen from a wide range of appropriate MSc modules across UCL

Dissertation/report

It is anticipated that on completion of this programme students will either embark on a career in either industry or academic research. This MRes forms the first year of a doctoral training programme in Medical Device Innovation. An industrial career in this expanding area could lie anywhere on the spectrum of working within large multinational medical technology companies to setting up your own enterprise in a medical device need area that you have identified.

Format

You will be taught on the MSc in Applied Exercise and Health Science using a range of different learning events. These will include group lectures, seminars, and laboratory classes. Lectures may consist of tutor­ led sessions, and internal and external speakers who are research and/or practice active. The learning schedule and methods of delivery are designed to build a learning community around the topics of discussion, draw in student experience as a partner in the learning and teaching process, and will provide significant support for the transition to this level of study. The variety should allow students to maximise their potential in an environment stimulated by research­led and research­enhanced delivery.

Assessment

Summative assessments will be individual in nature (group work will be conducted in a formative environment), and will comprise 20 credit modules of practical assessment, case study presentation, critical review, oral presentation, examination, essay, portfolio and exam. There is a maximum of two assessments on each of the modules, to ensure a focused assessment timetable. The dissertation module will ensure a wide variety of ethical issues are considered in the proposal assessment phase, with a choice of submission ‘type’ for the dissertation document (thesis, or paper in the style of an appropriate academic journal).

You can opt to take this course in full-time or part-time mode.

The course is divided into two parts. The first part comprises of the lecture, workshop, practical and field work elements of the course, followed by a five-month independent research project. The course is a mixture of taught units and research project covering topics including site investigation, soil mechanics and rock mechanics, geotechnical engineering design, contaminated land, slope stability and rock engineering.

Here are the units you will study:

Rock and Soil Mechanics: These topics are integral to the role of an engineering geologist. You will gain an advanced understanding of the geo-mechanical behaviour of rocks and soils and how they behave under different geotechnical design scenarios. You will also develop key skills in the assessment, description and testing of geological materials in order to understand and quantify their behaviour, using current British and Eurocode standards.

Soil and Rock Engineering: This unit will give you an advanced understanding of engineering and design in soils and rock masses, including fundamental design principles associated with common geotechnical solutions encountered on engineering geological and civil engineering projects.

Contaminated Land and Groundwater: These are important considerations in all types of construction and so an understanding of both is essential. You will learn key techniques for the identification and assessment of contaminated land and groundwater resources in an engineering geological context.

Ground Models: You will train in the development of geological ground models and geomorphological terrain models within the content of engineering geological practice, essential parts of any investigation.

Ground Investigation Techniques: You will gain advanced experience of ground investigation using invasive techniques, in-situ tests and geophysical methods – essential to an engineering geologist's skill base.

Landslides and Slope Instability: On this unit you will develop an advanced understanding of landslide systems, types of slides in soils and rocks and methods for identification and numerical analysis.

Field Reconnaissance and Geomorphological Mapping: The techniques covered on this unit are integral to the course and an essential skill for any graduate wishing to work in this area. You will have fieldwork training in techniques such as geomorphological mapping and walk-over surveys combined with interpretation of remote sensing and aerial photography imagery.

Spatial Analysis and Remote Sensing: On this unit you will cover the key tools for terrain evaluation and be trained in the acquisition and interpretation of aerial photography and satellite imagery, and the integration and analysis of spatial datasets using GIS.

Independent Research Project: This give you the opportunity to undertake an original piece of research to academic or industrial standards, typically in collaboration with research staff in the department or external industry partners. In addition to submission of a thesis report, you also present the results of your project at the annual postgraduate conference held at the end of September.

Information Systems Development: The unit prepares and enhances skills for industry with specialisation in the areas of the software process, systems design, object-oriented analysis and relational database development. It provides a balance between theoretical and practical elements.

Information Systems Management: This unit introduces students to the project management of IS/IT developments and encourages understanding of the techniques and methods currently used. It is based on monitoring and managing the activities in a project development life cycle, covering estimating and planning techniques, design, implementation and integration, project team building and motivation, configuration management and risk management. The unit requires students to consider project management techniques applicable to the development of current types of information system and to apply these techniques and methods specifically to the task of website development.

Interaction in Computer Systems: This unit introduces interaction with and by computer systems, and the role of computer systems and data communications in network environments. Concepts of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and ergonomics are introduced to students, and used to analyse and assess interactive systems in terms of accessibility and usability.

Web Development: Website design and development is a central skill for IS professionals. It involves not only a basic understanding of how websites are constructed and served, but also an understanding of how the websites function as part of a user-computer interactive system. This requires a developed understanding both of users and of the information tasks they are trying to perform.

Master's Project: You will undertake either an engineering unit or a study project, during the summer period. The project offers students the opportunity to apply the taught material in the solution of a real-world problem directly related to their course. The engineering project usually involves building a piece of software to solve a problem. An example of the sort of thing you might do would be building an information system to address a specific organisation’s requirements. The study project usually involves undertaking a study of an information systems problem domain. An example of the sort of thing you might do for a study project would be an evaluation of the information systems impact of mobile devices on an organisation.

Programme Assessment

You will be taught using a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and lab sessions. You’ll also be required to spend a significant amount of time in private study, which may involve additional software development or research as appropriate to the topic you are currently studying.

You will encounter a range of assessment styles depending on the content and nature of the unit topic. This can include written assignments, presentations as well as group and individual lab-based assessments. However, the most significant assessment element is the final dissertation, which reports and reflects on your final project.

Student Destinations

On completing this course, you will be all set to enter into a wide variety of careers in the computing industry, progress onto computing research or use computing as an additional skill in support of your principal career. You will be assessed by a combination of exams and coursework. The coursework supports the development of your transferable skills such as literature review and report writing. You will complete your MSc programme with a dissertation project.

Your dissertation is an opportunity to apply your learning on a five-month textile science, technology or management project. It also enables you to further develop your knowledge and skill in your chosen field. Your choice of topic, in consultation with your personal tutor, will range in purpose from investigatory and problem-solving work, through studies of state-of-the-art technology and current practice, to experimental and analytical research.
