Subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) courses are for graduates who want to train as secondary school teachers, but who must first develop their subject knowledge further.

It may be that your degree wasn’t in your chosen subject area, or perhaps you have relevant professional experience but need to learn how to apply that to teaching. Your PGCE or School Direct provider may refer you for SKE.

After successful completion of the course, you are expected to go straight into initial teacher training that leads to qualified teacher status (QTS). This can be at the University of Brighton or another institution.

We offer SKEs in the following subjects:

• Mathematics
• Physics

Biology:

Our Biology SKE will prepare you for starting a secondary biology initial teacher training programme.

We offer a range of courses with a duration of 8, 16 or 24 weeks depending on your individual needs. Course dates are flexible and commence between November and June each year.

The majority of the Biology SKE course is delivered through online learning, with one week of tuition at the Falmer campus in the summer.

Chemistry:

Our Chemistry SKE will prepare you for starting a secondary chemistry initial teacher training programme.

We offer a range of courses with a duration of 8, 12 or 24 weeks depending on your individual needs. Course dates are flexible and commence between November and June each year.

The majority of the Chemistry SKE course is delivered through online learning, with one week of tuition at the Falmer campus in the summer.

Mathematics:

We offer a range of Mathematics SKE courses that will suit various applicants, including those with a keen enthusiasm for mathematics but who may not have high-level mathematics qualifications. Each course will prepare you for starting a mathematics initial teacher training programme.

Courses run for 8 or 20 weeks with start dates in February, and June each year. The length of your course will be determined by your own needs.

Physics:

Our Physics SKE will prepare you for starting a secondary physics initial teacher training programme.

We offer a range of courses with a duration of 8, 12 or 24 weeks depending on your individual needs. Course dates are flexible and start between November and June each year.

The majority of the Physics SKE course is delivered through online learning, with one week of tuition at the Falmer campus in the summer.

Careers and employability

Our SKE courses are designed for those going into initial teacher training but who do not have the necessary subject knowledge. There is a national shortage of teachers in all of the subject areas our SKEs cover, and therefore employment prospects once you have qualified are extremely good.

It is led by experienced, knowledgeable practitioners with school teaching experience, at a university renowned for being a friendly and professional learning community.

If you want to train as a secondary maths teacher, but your degree contains less than 50% mathematics, then you are likely to be eligible for the course. Typically a SKE student may have an A level in mathematics, and have studied a degree with some mathematical content, but an aptitude and enthusiasm for the subject is more important.

Course detail

The taught modules will cover all of the subject material that you are likely to teach up to GCSE, as well as areas from A level and beyond.

However, the aim of the course is to give you a much greater depth of understanding of the subject, being able to explain why as well as how techniques work, and an understanding of applications and the historical and cultural context of the subject.

The course is fully funded and there are no fees to pay. You will also receive a bursary, a total of £4,000 for the full course and £2,400 for the shorter version.

You cannot apply directly for the SKE course. Instead, you should apply through UCAS for a secondary maths teacher training course such as a traditional university based PGCE course or a School Direct course, indicating in your personal statement that you are interested in completing the SKE.

At interview an assessment is made of your subject knowledge. If appropriate, a conditional offer is made through UCAS where the condition is that you complete the SKE.

A place will automatically be reserved for you, and no further application is necessary.

Format

The course is full time, with taught face-to-face sessions taking place on Mondays to Thursdays and directed study tasks on Fridays.

The full course consists of 20 weeks of study beginning at the end of January, but there is an option to join the course for the last 13 weeks for students who already have stronger understanding of topics up to GCSE level.

The course dates are:

20 weeks from 23rd January 2017 until 29th June 2017

12 weeks from 27th March 2017 until 29th June 2017

This full time one-year (36-week), DfE Teaching Agency approved, subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course helps you to deepen your knowledge so that you are ready to train to teach maths.

This SKE course involves studying for one year at our City Campus, right in the heart of Sheffield. The PGCE Information Technology and Computer Science enables ICT & computing professionals and graduates to become effective teachers of computing (curriculum previously called ICT and now including a strong Computer Science element) in secondary schools. The programme emphasises learning through critical reflection on theory and practice and discussion with colleagues.

The programme combines the theory and practice of education which is why students spend 60 days in College and 120 days in schools. The course is research-led and you will develop your knowledge of how pupils learn; how assessment can improve learning and teaching; how to plan lessons, and how to make appropriate use of computers and the Internet to teach effectively. - Description -

The programme combines the theory and practice of education. We work in close partnership with schools in designing, delivering and assessing our course.

University based: You will work with other trainees and tutors in your subject area to consider the principles and practice of teaching your subject including curriculum design, the development of materials, classroom management and lesson planning. You will also work with trainees from other subjects in a programme of lectures and seminar groups to examine broad generic issues. During both secondary school placements there are occasional days in college for tutorials to support and monitor progress towards the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). There are cross-curricular research tasks and assignments.

School based: For 24 of the 36 weeks the training takes place in schools, mainly in two complementary secondary schools but with two short primary school experiences. This introduces you to recognising key constituents of good teaching, helps develop your own teaching skills and gain an understanding of how schools work and how children learn.

- Computer Science Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses -

Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses are intensive and flexible programmes for graduates in IT/computing who want to teach computer science but whose degree is not a direct match or whose specialist subject knowledge needs deepening prior to training for qualified teacher status (QTS). King's College London in conjunction with Queen Mary College, University of London, has designed a 12-unit SKE programme for computer science funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership.

In order to be eligible for SKE (for which you may also obtain a bursary) you need an offer of a place on one of the King's PGCE programmes: either computer science or information technology and computer science. At the PGCE interview we will assess your SKE needs and determine which units you should take. Our SKE courses are also open to candidates who have PGCE offers, conditional on SKE, from other institutions. The programme runs between April and September. Please note that it is not intended for graduates in non-IT disciplines who wish to retrain in computer science: for that we recommend a conversion MSc programme (eg http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduates/programme/view/21).

- Course purpose -

Our programme is for computing/ICT specialists wishing to train to be teachers of pupils aged 11-18 in computing (previously called ICT) to GCSE level and information technology to A-level. A parallel programme, PGCE Computer Science, enables computer science specialists to train to be teach computer science to A-level. The programme will lead to the Department for Education's (HM Government) Standards for QTS which are assessed through teaching practice observation, portfolios and written assignments.

- Course format and assessment -

The 45-credit honours-level module will be assessed by a combination of a written portfolio (equivalent to 8,000 words) and assessment of your teaching practice against the teaching standards as set out by the government’s Department for Education. Progress in meeting the teaching standards will be monitored through three progress reports that will be completed by staff at the placement school.

The 30-credit master’s-level modules will each be assessed by an 8,000-word written assignment.

The 15-credit honours-level module will be assessed by a 4,000-word written assignment.

Career prospects

The majority of trainees go into teaching or other areas of education: many become heads of departments or members of senior management teams; some take up careers in educational administration in the advisory or inspection services.

You’ll learn the principles of effective modern languages teaching and how to develop pupils’ love of a foreign language, and we also offer a French Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) if you need to widen your language skills. Your school placements reinforce what you learn by given you hands-on practical experience in the classroom. Trainees on our PGCE Secondary courses achieve high results, with 95% receiving an Ofsted good or outstanding grade by the end of the course and 96% going on to obtain employment, often with one of their placement schools.

More about this course

This NCTL-accredited PGCE Secondary Modern Languages course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and prepares you to teach 11 to 16-year-olds. You may also have the opportunity to work in A level environments.

You’ll focus on the principles of teaching modern languages including French, Spanish and German, and will develop school pupils’ skills in speaking, reading, listening and writing these languages.

If you only speak either German or Spanish, we offer a 12-week Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course in French. This will enable you to teach French to pupils up to Key Stage 3. The SKE is fully funded and bursaries are available to eligible applicants.

At the University you’ll explore teaching methodology, pupil assessment and the fundamentals of how children learn. The PGCE course will also broaden your understanding of teaching in multicultural urban environments through your two placements in London, where you’ll learn how to help pupils develop their foreign language skills.

Great emphasis is placed on sharing feedback with other trainees. You’ll complete a weekly reflection and contribute to discussions online to develop your understanding of the role of a secondary teacher. This commitment to high standards has lead to positive reviews from Ofsted:

Your assessment will consist of four elements:
-School placement A
-School placement B, where your teaching ability will be assessed in relation to the standard for Qualified Teacher Status
-A Professional Practice Portfolio, which is compiled throughout the year, detailing personal experiences and reflections on your development as a teacher, largely in relation to your practical teaching experience
-The Educational Research Assignment, which allows you to explore an educational issue

There are no examinations.

Modular structure

This is a year-long course.

Module 1, Curriculum Studies, includes:
-The theoretical underpinning of the practice you'll take into the classroom
-Access to the pedagogical knowledge and understanding required to effectively plan and teach well-structured lessons in the Secondary curriculum
-Sessions on Modern Languages
-Training to assess school pupils’ progress in each of these curriculum areas

Module 2, Professionalism and Inclusive Practice (PIP), includes:
-Support for the wider professional development of each student teacher
-Discussion of the role of children’s rights and how this underpins effective learning relationships
-Understanding of different aspects of inclusive education
-Introduction to the whole school and wider children’s workforce
-Teamwork and collaborative discussion across different subject areas

Work placement:
-120 days in a London placement learning to teach with a mentor in secondary schools

After the course

This intensive PGCE leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which enables you to teach modern languages to 11 to 16-year-olds. Our trainees have gone on to secure school secondary teacher roles at schools including Ark Academy, Ralph Allen School, Bushey Academy and more.

Funding

Funding is available for many postgraduate courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Depending on your teaching subject and degree classification, you may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship of up to £30,000 through the teacher training bursary.

PGCE School Direct

The School Direct school placements work around the training calendar for the student teacher with the PGCE offered at the university. This means we can only offer places in Early Years / Primary and in Secondary teaching Maths, Modern Languages and Science with a specialism in Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

You will attend the training workshops at the university with other regular PGCE students and carry out placements of 120 days in a school or consortium of schools with a School Direct allocation. This time could be divided between two schools with some flexibility.

London Met has School Direct partnership with nearly 100 schools. This large body of schools have joined with us to build a cross-capital alliance, providing diverse contexts in which to train the new generation of London teachers.

Most of our trainees follow a programme modelled on the traditional PGCE, with time spent under tutor supervision at London Metropolitan University and the school placement divided between two partner schools.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

This course offers you the opportunity to learn how to teach mathematics to all ability ranges at secondary level. You will develop a good understanding of maths pedagogy and how to help children grasp complex ideas. Providing you with a solid foundation of professional awareness and understanding, the course will foster and develop your competence and confidence in imparting your subject knowledge to young people.

If your degree does not include enough mathematics, or if you just need a refresher course, the Department for Education sponsors several Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses. Newman’s SKE course will provide you with the opportunity to acquire enough mathematics to teach it to at least Key Stage 4 in a secondary school and could improve your chances of employment. Course Content

Teaching sessions at Newman comprise an exploration of how mathematical topics develop in the 11-16 with post 16 enhancement age range with a brief exploration of Key Stage 2 techniques and how ideas progress at A level. You will be involved in sessions that focus on doing maths, exploring why techniques such as long multiplication work and how children can be guided in their learning.

You will focus not only on how children will develop their mathematical knowledge and understanding but how to increase their confidence in applying it. To assess children’s progress you will explore potential errors and misconceptions and how they might be observed and remedied. Extensive use will be made of ICT to illustrate and model mathematical ideas. This will furnish you with relevant skills that can be taken into the classroom.

School Based Learning

You will gain a vast amount of experience of teaching as a substantial component of the course involves two teaching placements. You will also benefit from Newman’s excellent partnerships with schools in the West Midlands. The programme consists of 40 weeks of full-time study (from early September to the beginning of July), and you can expect to spend at least 24 of those weeks in schools.

You will be supported through these placements by experienced teaching colleagues, including subject mentors – teachers trained to provide beginning teachers with support and guidance. Partnership tutors from Newman will also be allocated to provide advice and support.

You will be encouraged to explore further aspects of mathematics education with groups of pupils across the age and ability range, including those with special educational needs.

The course will cover higher level GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics. There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Statistics, Euclidean Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy.

We will use mathematics materials which are commonly used in classrooms to promote interactive engagement in mathematics including group work and extensive use of ICT. The course will include an introduction to relevant themes in teaching and learning which will also develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. There will be a two week school placement where you will have an opportunity to observe and participate in classroom mathematics.

The course will be assessed by a continuous assessment portfolio and a final examination. The portfolio will include mathematical tasks, written assignments, a profile of the school placement and work designed to practice specific areas of the curriculum. The final examination will include a GCSE Higher Mathematics paper (calculator and non-calculator papers) and a paper of relevant questions of A-level standard.

Professional accreditation

The course is funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), and London Met is approved to provide SKE with NCTL funding for either maths or French.

The twelve-week course will be based at the University for four days each week Tuesday to Friday, with the exception of a two week placement in schools which will be arranged for you. You will be following a course which focusses on the content of higher GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics.

You will learn mathematics in a variety of ways including mathematics software, group work and by following targets tailored to your own needs. Learning mathematics in these ways will give you first-hand experience of the pedagogies which you will use in the PGCE course. The school placement will give you the chance to see mathematics teaching in a school and you will, by completing specially designed evaluation tasks, develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. Throughout the course there will be regular tutorials to monitor your progress and provide help and guidance to make the London Met maths enhancement course a successful first step in your teaching career.

Funding
