More about this course

The MA by Project is an innovative degree that gives you the opportunity to set your own agenda as a practitioner / researcher. You will be supported to develop and explore your practice through a self-directed research project, making your own work central to your programme of study throughout the duration of the course.

A core programme of research seminars are designed to open up a range of approaches to research and foster critical, analytical, reflective and evaluative skills. The course team and subject specialists will support you throughout the development and execution of your project. Workshops, presentations and seminars foster discussion and feedback from a multi-disciplinary community.

Projects are supported in the following subject areas: architecture and rapid change, architectural history and theory, cities, interiors, fine art, film and animation, furniture and product design, music, photography, silversmithing and jewellery, textiles and visual communication.

Outputs may take many forms, such as:
-Made objects in a variety of media (for example, painting, photography, printmaking, film, animation, silversmithing and jewellery, musical instruments, furniture, textiles)
-Documented actions such as performance art, live art, exhibitions, installations or events
-A design portfolio allied to one of our many design studios in architecture, cities, interiors, graphic design and illustration
-A written thesis investigating a theoretical or historical topic. This may take the form of a published output, an exhibition text, a case study or a PhD proposal

Resources

The Cass offers unparalleled facilities for designing and making. You will have access to specialist workshops, equipment and facilities all run by highly skilled staff.

Facilities include rapid prototyping, CNC routing, waterjet cutting, 3D printing, woodmill, furniture making workshops, musical instrument workshops, upholstery workshops, soft furnishing, finishing area, metal fabrication workshop, plastic and model making workshop, ceramics, silversmithing and jewellery workshops, restoration and conservation, AV/TV hire shop, recording studios, audio laboratories,editing suites, darkrooms, printroom, textiles workshop.

As well as a dedicated art and design library you will have access to libraries across the University. Our London location means that students are within reach of The National Art Library at the V&A, The British Architectural Library at RIBA, the British Library plus innumerable national and specialist collections.

Graduating students are able to nominate a specialism to be included within their degree award title to reflect either their project discipline or specific topic, eg MA by Project (Fine Art).

Assessment

At the end of each semester work is submitted for assessment.

The Design MA at DMU provides you with an opportunity to design and pursue your own personal arts study programme at master’s level, while being supported and supervised by leading national and international scholars.

The programme allows you to study in a way that is most appropriate to your own individual circumstances, and has been designed to suit your preferred learning style(s). You can take up to 90 credits from our taught postgraduate provision, while the rest of the programme will be completed through negotiated learning agreements. Study can be full-time, part-time, or a mixture of both. You can exit the programme early (after 60 credits) with a postgraduate certificate, or (after 120 credits) with a postgraduate diploma. The shortest period of study for the master's award is one year full-time.

There are a wide range of subject areas to choose from, and you can create a programme of study which is interdisciplinary and unique to your specialist interests or skills. The programme also allows you to be supervised by leading national and international scholars, researchers and practitioners drawn from the unique breadth of specialist areas available in the Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities.

You are able to exercise choice and control over the aims of your course, the content and context of your studies, and the criteria against which your achievement is assessed. You can take up to 90 credits from our taught modules (subject to approval), and you design your programme of study between and across the subject areas that we offer.

Assessment can be as varied as you want it to be. It will be defined in the learning contract; so you can negotiate assessment tasks and methods.

All students must take a 15 credit Research Methods module (by attendance or by distance learning) at the beginning of the course, and all students will also have to undertake a Major Project, Dissertation or a Work Placement at the end of the course to achieve the master’s award.

You will be assigned two dedicated mentors who are subject specialists. They will provide academic support throughout the course. DMU academic and research staff are experts in their field. They are actively engaged in a wide range of external activities including research, consultancy, publishing and exhibiting in both a national and international context.

DMU has excellent technical expertise available to support postgraduate students. Within the faculty, there are professionally equipped workshops with specialist technicians to support your master’s work.

Graduates have gone onto consultancy, entrepreneurship, arts and design management, research and teaching. Many students choose this course as a preparation for an academic career and enter further MPhil or PhD level study.

As a Postgraduate Design student you join an established network of creative people that encourage and support you to drive your studies to the next level. Our Postgraduate framework of design courses has been specially designed to allow students from different disciplines, backgrounds and cultures to come together, share teaching and learning experiences and explore their creative identities through dialogue and practice. MA and MFA study

MA and MFA students complete the same modules during the course except that MFA students complete an extra project module. The MFA project encourages you to develop professional skills that help you to identify, instigate, and deliver projects with external partners, such as communities, galleries or businesses. You find a project partner, agree a brief and then deliver the project to a professional standard. We are normally asked to shortlist applicants before recommending a small number to apply. If this happens, we consider your interview, portfolio of work, academic qualifications and learning aims. We aim to pick people whose abilities and aims are relevant for the company and who are most likely to be successful in a competitive interview.

Course detail

MFA Design responds to continuing changes in contemporary design practice and challenges the perceived boundaries between the many and varied recognised art and design disciplines.

The course currently supports the areas of: Ceramics, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interaction Design, Jewellery, Silversmithing, and Textiles.

MFA Design was previously known as MFA Multidisciplinary Design. In the redesign of the course, additional staff members have joined the core team, and we now support a range of design disciplines.This richness of knowledge and experience of academic and technical staff enhances the student experience on the program, and opens up additional possibilities for collaboration and innovation, whilst maintaining the rigour in technical, research and development skills required of a masters student.

This change to the course team has also realigned the course to focus on the attainment of advanced, sustainable, skilled practice through research, which is made possible through the technical and specialist facilities available within Belfast School of Art.The course retains the emphasis of entrepreneurship which was a unique strength of the previous version of the program and is built upon tried and tested models developed in conjunction with NESTA (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) in recognition of the essential skills necessary for a successful, sustainable practice within the rapidly growing creative industries.

Through ongoing questioning and development during the course a student may identify themselves with a variety of outcomes such as;

Designer Maker – Leading to self employment, professional designer, setting up a SME

Design Researcher – Leading to PhD, research fellowships

Designer Leader – Leading to business leadership or Strategic Thinker within the creative industries.

Teaching and learning assessment

Goldsmiths' Department of Design runs the PGCE (Secondary) in Design & Technology. The curriculum includes working with resistant materials (product design), systems and control (electronics, CAD/CAM), textiles, and food technology. What unifies these is the subject of Design, and the development of designing competence.

This programme is aimed at preparing you to teach in two broad areas.

You’ll be given the opportunity to specialise in one area to Key Stage 3 (age 11-14), and another to Key Stage 4 and beyond (age 14+). Key Stage 3 specialist fields are Materials; Textiles; Electronics and Communications Technology; and Food. The two Key Stage 4 specialist fields are Materials and Textiles.

Through an integrated course that involves both a practical and theoretical approach, you’ll be encouraged to reach your potential as a fully qualified teacher.

Structure

College-based work
There are seminars examining the nature of Design and Technology education, and workshops designed to develop your subject expertise. By the end of the programme you must offer a second area of competence to teach to the end of Key Stage 3, as well as your specialist area at Key Stages 4 and 5.

You engage in two design activities: one in the first term, and the second throughout the year.

The first activity is mirrored by the same project being undertaken by Year 9 pupils in a local school, and culminates in a shared presentation.

The second activity culminates in a presentation of a personal design-and-make project to your peers, to consider and reflect on the nature of the process of designing.

School-based work

During the Autumn Term you are placed in your first school, usually with a partner Design and Technology student teacher. The aim is induction, both into schooling and the teaching of design and technology, and into learning and teaching practices.

You do this by:

-observing teachers working and pupils participating in learning activities
-learning about whole school policies and practices
-studying the Design and Technology curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4 (examinations)
-progressively taking on teaching activities, initially in tandem with the class teacher
-Spring and Summer terms are devoted to teaching practice in a second school, developing your competence to meet the Professional Standards.

You design a scheme of work for the Key Stage 3 curriculum, and develop your understanding of pupil learning styles, National Curriculum requirements, assessment and examinations.
