The MCh Orth Course in Dundee (accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England) is a clinically-based Masters degree that encompasses taught, clinical attachment and research elements, which provide orthopaedic surgeons with in-depth knowledge of the latest advances in surgical and biomechanical techniques.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, to reflect the multi-disciplinary aspect of the research carried out at IMAR, where the majority of the MCh Orth projects are conducted, the respective staff were returned into Unit of Assessment 25 (General Engineering - Biomedical Engineering) and Unit of Assessment 8 (Primary Care and Other Community Based Clinical Subjects) where 90% and 85% of our quality profile was deemed of international class. This is an excellent outcome taking into consideration that IMAR was only established in 2003 in support of the MCh Orth course.

We have been successfully educating orthopaedic surgeons for 20 years and to date we have over 350 graduates. How you will be taught

You will be taught via lectures, tutorials, multi-media demonstrations, dry bone workshops, anatomy demonstrations, clinical and operating theatre attachments, and hands-on latest surgical techniques using Thiel embalming cadavers, which is unique to Dundee in the whole of the UK.

How you will be assessed

The programme assessment is made up of three elements: two written MCQs (one per semester) using the latest e-assessment technology and iPads, OSCE and a thesis. Candidates will be examined orally on the subject of thesis by a committee consisting of a convenor, an external and internal examiners. Students are required to pass each element to qualify for the award of the degree. There is no resit facility.

Many of our MCh Orth graduates have gone on to highly successful careers once returned to their own countries with many taking up new challenges and opportunities within the UK up to Consultant position. Several have published widely in journals and at conferences and have even gone onto Fellowships throughout Europe and employment in the UK.

The Master of Science (M.Sc) in Medical Visualization is a new one-year taught postgraduate programme offered by the Digital Design Studio at The Glasgow School of Art in collaboration with the Laboratory of Human Anatomy, University of Glasgow.

The purpose of this programme is to create a unique opportunity to combine actual cadaveric dissection with 3D digital reconstruction, interaction and visualisation using state of the art virtual reality facilities. It allows a unique opportunity to examine human anatomy, and to reconstruct it in a real-time 3D environment for use in education, simulation, and training. This programme will enable students to create original medical datasets, allow a greater understanding of “normal” anatomy, regional variations, and provide a novel approach to aid multi-disciplinary fields in anatomical knowledge, understanding, training and skills transfer. With the demand from clinicians of anatomical knowledge of students increasing (as a result in changes to medical and dental curricula) this Masters programme provides an ideal opportunity for enhancement of research into human anatomy, diagnostics, simulation, and visualisation.

Students undertaking the

MSc in Medical Visualisation and Human Anatomy

programme will split their time equally between the University of Glasgow (Laboratory of Human Anatomy) and the Glasgow School of Art (Digital Design Studio). The programme is delivered as two core areas – digital technologies applied to medical visualisation (delivered by the Digital Design Studio at Stage 1) and human anatomy (delivered by the Laboratory of Human Anatomy at Stage 2). In Stage 3, students work towards a large-scale self directed final project, supported throughout by individual supervision.

Subsequent career opportunities exist within the commercial healthcare technology industry (device manufacturer, etc.), the public and private healthcare sectors, as well as in academic medical visualisation research. Career outcomes for the students with medical, biomedical, anatomy, or health professional backgrounds will be able to gain 3D visualisation skills that will enhance their portfolio of abilities; students with computer science or 3D graphics background will be involved in the design and development of healthcare related products through digital technology, e.g. diagnostic and clinical applications, creating content involving medical visualisation, simulation, cardiac pacemakers, and biomechanically related products for implantation, such as knee, hip and shoulder joint replacements.

Although just one intake per year in September, students can attend this programme on a part-time basis.

Why this programme

-You will examine human anatomy and reconstruct it in a real-time 3D environment for use in education, simulation, and training.
-You will have access to the largest stereo 3D lab in Europe, and its state-of-the-art facilities such as laser scanner (for 3D data acquisition), stereo 3D projection, full body motion capture system, haptic devices and ambisonic sound.
-You will also have access to the Laboratory of Human Anatomy at the University of Glasgow, one of the largest in Europe.

Programme structure

You will split your time between the Glasgow School of Art (Digital Design Studio) and the University of Glasgow (Laboratory of Human Anatomy). The programme is structured into three stages.

Stage One: digital technologies applied to medical visualisation (delivered by the Digital Design Studio at the Glasgow School of Art)

-Core research skills for postgraduates.

Stage Two: human anatomy (delivered by the Laboratory of Human Anatomy at the University of Glasgow).

In Stage Three you will complete a self-directed final project, supported throughout with individual supervision.

The Biomedical Engineering MSc enables you to widen your biomedical engineering knowledge and skills. You develop these to a postgraduate level with the opportunity to undertake in-depth studies through your research projects.

This one year course is intended for honours graduates (or an international equivalent) in mechanical or mechanical-related engineering (eg biomedical, materials or design), maths, physics or a related discipline.

A two year MSc is also available for non-native speakers of English that includes a preliminary year.

The taught part of the course covers major biomedical engineering themes, including:

The course is delivered by the School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering. The School has an established programme of research seminars. These are delivered by guest speakers from academia and industry (both national and international), providing excellent insights into a wide variety of engineering research.

Effective communication is an important skill for the modern professional engineer. This course includes sessions to help develop your ability, both through formal guidance sessions dedicated to good practice in report writing, and through oral/poster presentations of project work.

Delivery

The taught component of the course makes use of a combination of lectures, tutorials/labs and seminars. Assessment is by written examination and submitted in-course assignments.

The research project (worth 60 credits) is undertaken throughout the duration of the Master's course. Project work is assessed by dissertation and oral/poster presentations. You will be allocated, and meet regularly with, project supervisors.

Accreditation

The courses have been accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Why a Master's Degree

For those students contemplating advanced studies in computer science at UBC, completing a master's degree before continuing to the PhD program confers several advantages. The two-year period of the master's first helps students decide whether a research career is the right career choice for them. If it is, taking this time helps give them the skills needed to pursue independent research. Second, the research experience gained can be very valuable as student work toward picking a PhD topic, as most professors in the department prefer that students shoulder this choice on their own.
Third, a student who completes a master's degree and decides to work in industry prior to embarking on the full PhD has the opportunity to apply his or her skills and master's level education in the field and to take advantage of jobs that have attractive starting salaries.

Master's Program

Each incoming master's student is assigned an advisor. The advisor is responsible for monitoring the student's progress until the student finds a thesis supervisor. Students have two semesters to meet faculty members and explore research opportunities before making a decision on a thesis supervisor. This provides students with a great opportunity to find the best research interest and personality match among our large and diverse faculty.

The UBC Department of Computer Science offers three avenues to a Master's Degree. The first of these is the Thesis Master's, where the major focus is on the student's own research. The second is the Comprehensive Course Master's, intended for students planning to continue to the Ph.D. program at UBC. The third option strikes a balance between the research focus of the Thesis Master's and the course focus of the Comprehensive Course Master's. The department generally does not encourage students to take advantage of this option, but does make it available in unusual circumstances.
