Why this course?

This course is designed to give graduate engineers and well-qualified sea-going personnel an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required for technical ship management. 

90% of world trade is carried by sea. You'll gain an understanding of the subjects essential for effective and efficient management of ships and fleets. This course allows you to develop multidisciplinary interests and skills by working with other areas of naval architecture, ocean and marine engineering.

As a graduate you could expect to work in the industry as a technical ship superintendent or manager.

You’ll study

Your course will be made up of three components:

  • Instructional Modules
  • Group Project
  • Individual Project (MSc only)

Group project

You’ll be part of a group of three to five people in ‘consultant teams’ for 10 weeks addressing a practical engineering problem. You’ll then have the opportunity to present the report to a panel of industrial experts.

This project will enhance your team working and communication skills. It also provides valuable access to industrial contacts.

It will give you a good understanding of all aspects of research work. In addition, the technological study must be accompanied by survey of the relevance and applicability of the findings to the maritime industries at large.

You'll learn efficient ways to gather information, to distribute workload and to delegate amongst the group, to analyse their results and to appreciate the broader implications of the whole project. In-depth technological studies will be accompanied by increasingly important competence in managerial skills, quality assurance and a sound appreciation of the economic, political, social and environmental issues crucial to professional success.

Individual project (MSc only)

MSc students will take on an individual dissertation on a topic of their own interest. The aim of the individual project is to develop your research skills and to combine many of aspects learned from other modules within a specific topic. This will be achieved by you carrying out work into a particular topic relating to your chosen theme and preparing a dissertation.

The Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering (NAOME) supports and promotes students in various competitions and awards, from cash bursaries for top performing students to the highest of awards from international organisations.

Learning & teaching

There are two teaching semesters of 11 weeks each.

Course modules are delivered in form of formal lectures supported with tutorials and laboratory experiment.

You’re required to attend an induction prior to the start of the course.

Guest lectures

During term time, we arrange weekly seminars in which leaders and pioneers of the maritime, oil and gas and marine renewables industries visit the department and present to students. This is a great way of supplementing your education with the latest developments and gaining industry contacts for your future career.

Industrial visits are also made to a variety of companies.

Assessment

There are two types of method for module assessment. One is course work assessment only, the other is examination assessment. For examined modules the final assessment mark consists of 30-40% course work and 60-70% examination.

Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal Academic Framework review, so may be subject to change. Methods of teaching

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

In a lecture, the lecturer will mainly be giving an overview of a particular aspect of the module content (as well as opportunities for you to ask questions and be reflective), while in classes and workshops you will have an opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding in the topic

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutor at three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Postgraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback in relation to examinations following all examination periods and you will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but, across your degree scheme as a whole, you can expect a mixture of exams, coursework, essays, practical work, presentations, and individual and group projects.

The course takes place in Piraeus, Greece, offering the experience of studying at the esteemed Hellenic Lloyd's Register. You will have access to our online resources as well as the prestigious Kaiti Laskaridis Library collection during your study.

Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology as meeting their requirements for chartered marine technologist.  Additionally, successful completion of the course gives the maximum number of exemptions from the examinations of the Chartered Institute of Shipbrokers.

Teaching and learning

The course is taught by some 12 lecturers who come from academia and industry. These are supported by guest lecturers drawn from various parts of the marine industry.

Assessment

Each subject has coursework associated with it and this normally comprises two essays which probe the student's abilities for critical analysis. Examinations are held twice per year with 3 subjects examined in the spring and the remainder in autumn. To pass the student must gain 50% in each of the coursework and examination elements.

The project is a major piece of work which results in a dissertation on a chosen subject. This is examined by the dissertation content and viva-voce examination.

Modules

The Maritime Operations and Management course is an identical option of the long standing course taught in London. The courses are taught in two geographical locations, London and Piraeus by the same lecturers and adhere to the same syllabus and are overseen by the same External Examiner. Contact hours in Piraeus are the same as in London.

The course comprises eight taught modules: six compulsory and two elective to suit the student’s needs and future career aspirations. Outside of the block taught module students are expected to read around the subjects developed in the lectures, undertake coursework and prepare for examinations in the compulsory subjects.

This 18 month course is taught at weekends (spaced out during the period of the course) to enable students to meet employment or other commitments.

Completion of modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. Alternatively, if in addition, a project followed by a dissertation is undertaken by a student, this will lead to the award of a Master’s degree.

Core modules are all taught in Greece. With regards to the elective modules, two are offered in Piraeus to enable the course to be wholly completed in Greece. These electives are Marketing of Marine Services and Risk Management. However, if a student prefers any of the other elective modules, they can be taken but that would require attendance in London.

The Head of Department, for example, sits on the IMechE Offshore Engineering committee, two BSI committees, the Engineering Integrity Society and is Chairman of the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress Offshore, Renewable Energy Committee. Course content is reviewed annually by the course team and project/group work is by and large related to the Department's industrially funded research.

Course details

The taught programme for the Advanced Mechanical Engineering masters is generally delivered from October until March and is comprised of eight compulsory taught modules. Students on the part-time programme will complete all of the compulsory modules based on a flexible schedule that will be agreed with the Course Director.

Group project

The group project undertaken between October and April enables you to put the skills and knowledge developed during the course modules into practice in an applied context while gaining transferable skills in project management, teamwork and independent research. You will put in to practice analytical and numerical skills developed in the compulsory modules.

The aim of the group project is to provide you with direct experience of applying knowledge to an industrially relevant problem that requires a team-based multidisciplinary solution. You will develop a fundamental range of skills required to work in a team including team member roles and responsibilities, project management, delivering technical presentations and exploiting the variety of expertise of each individual member. Each group will be given an industrially relevant assignment to perform. Industry involvement is an integral component for the group project, to give you first-hand experience at working within real life challenging situations. 

It is clear that the modern design engineer cannot be divorced from the commercial world. In order to provide practice in this matter, a poster presentation will be required from all students. This presentation provides the opportunity to develop presentation skills and effectively handle questions about complex issues in a professional manner. All groups submit a written report and deliver a presentation to the industry partner.

Part-time students are encouraged to participate in a group project as it provides a wealth of learning opportunities. However, an option of an individual dissertation is available if agreed with the Course Director.

Individual project

The aim of the individual research project is to provide you with direct experience in undertaking a research/development project in a relevant industrial or research area. You will make a formal presentation of your findings to a panel of academics and industry experts and submit a research thesis.

The individual research project component takes place from March to August.

For part-time students it is common that their research thesis is undertaken in collaboration with their place of work and supported by academic supervision.

Learning options

Students will be resident and undertake full-time study in the UK. Under both, the 9 and 12-month programmes students take compulsory and/or elective modules in Part 2.

The 12 month option involves taking an elective 20 credit module between July and August, which would also mean a 20 credit reduction in the number of taught modules taken in the spring term.

After completion of the programme you will be well equipped with the knowledge for a successful career in the shipping/ transportation industries, as well as in the wider finance sector.

On average more than 90% of our graduates are in work or further education 6 months after graduation.

Indicative career paths for our graduates are ship-owning and transportation companies, ship-broking/chartering firms, shipping divisions of investment banks, shipping analysis/consulting firms, ship-finance arrangers, port operators, and shipping-related investment funds, among others. The wide curriculum of the programme will also enable you to consider careers in the global investment banking and securities markets.

The programme is accredited by ICS and our students are eligible for 3 exam exemptions from the ICS qualification, which is the maximum number of exemptions offered by the institute. The 3 exemptions offered are for the ICS modules:

Our successful graduates have to take only 4 out of the 7 ICS exams to qualify for the ICS membership. 

ICMA Fixed Income Certificate

To obtain the requisite knowledge to pass the rigorous FIC exam, students are required to take the ICMA Centre Fixed Income Cash and Derivatives Markets module at Part 2. In order to receive the FIC certificate, students will need to register and pass the FIC exam through ICMA.

The emergence of the Law of the Sea Convention and establishment of Exclusive Economic Zones has given coastal states extensive and comprehensive rights and obligations over marine resources in vast areas of ocean. Wise management of ocean resources is essential if the full economic potential of these new entitlements is to be realised. To ensure the continuing biological productivity of these areas, the level and type of development of activities such as waste dumping, mineral extraction, recreation, industrial and urban growth, fisheries and aquaculture, need to be controlled, and interactions of these often conflicting activities resolved by management.

This MSc is a full-time one-year course, consisting of 9 months taught course and 3 months research project, and examined by continuous assessment. The course provides theoretical and practical training in measuring and quantifying marine resources and the effects of conflicting usage upon them. It provides a sound scientific basis on which to develop policy and make decisions on marine resource exploitation and protection around the world.

Course Aims
To broaden the student's awareness of the economic potential of the ocean, to generate an understanding of the major marine biological resources and the physical processes controlling these resources, to provide theoretical and practical training in measuring and quantifying these resources and the effects of conflicting usage upon them, to enhance those skills necessary to manage effectively the sea area of national jurisdiction, and to produce graduates with appropriate experience for developing policy and making decisions on marine resources and other marine uses for their individual countries or regions.
