Our Health Economics courses are offered in conjunction with our partner, the University of South Wales, who have developed a strong reputation for delivering innovative learning.

With a dramatic increase in the demand for fertility services and IVF treatment in the hands of the specialist, there is an increasing need for knowledge in the treatment and management of fertility issues at primary care level. This includes conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, which has a prevalence of 10% amongst females as well as low testosterone and erectile dysfunction amongst men. Similarly, with 10% of couples presenting to primary care with issues relating to fertility, this is a common primary care problem yet it is not covered adequately in training.

Our courses in sexual and reproduction medicine are applicable to GPs, doctors, nurses, physicians and pharmacists with an interest in sexual and reproduction medicine.

Postgraduate Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Medicine

Our online 1 year Postgraduate Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Medicine will focus on direct application to current topics, case studies and processes relevant to the student’s own remit and country of practice. The course is worth 120 credits and comprises 6 modules of 20 credits each.

On completion of the Sexual and Reproductive Medicine Diploma, you will be able to demonstrate:
An understanding of the care of patients in sexual and reproductive medicine.
A critical awareness of current issues affecting the care of patients undertaking treatments in sexual and reproductive medicine.
Advanced knowledge of sexual and reproductive medicine that will facilitate decision-making in unpredictable and/or complex situations.
An ability to use knowledge to adapt professional practice to meet the changing demands of healthcare systems.

Course Structure

Our 1 year course consists of 6 modules per year, each of 6 weeks duration.

Module 1 - The Reproductive System, Fertility and Pregnancy
Module 2 - Sexual Function
Module 3 - Male Subfertility and Infertility
Module 4 - Female Subfertility and Infertility
Module 5 - Initial Management of the Infertile Couple
Module 6 - Assisted Reproduction and Ethics

Assessment

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students use the skills gained during the lectures to engage with the different activities (see below).

Clinical case scenarios with case based discussion - 40%

Teaching Methods

Each module has the same format. Using an online platform and one tutor per 10-15 students, the self-directed distance learning is guided by tutor stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios. Group projects are undertaken alongside independent projects. Reflective practice is recorded in a reflective portfolio to help students consider how the learning can be translated into everyday work and practice. Teaching starts with 1 day of introductory lectures. Students may attend these lectures in the UK (Glyntaff campus, University of South Wales). The lecture series are delivered by the faculty and tutors, they are a pre-course organiser, giving students the tools required to undertake the online course such as:

Scientific writing.
Levels of evidence.
Harvard referencing.
Reflective writing.

The lectures series give an opportunity to meet face to face with tutors/other students prior to the online course.

MSc Sexual and Reproductive Medicine

The Sexual and Reproductive Medicine MSc course provides a progression route for the Postgraduate Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Medicine course offered by the University, and has been developed for GPs, doctors, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and other suitably qualified individuals with an interest in sexual and reproduction medicine.

Entry to the 1 year MSc in Sexual and Reproductive Medicine will require the successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Medicine (120 credits) either from the University of South Wales or from another UK University.

Our 1 year Sexual and Reproductive Medicine MSc is the shortest route to MSc certificate available and is delivered online. You will be able to learn around existing work commitments.

On completion of the Sexual and Reproductive Medicine MSc, you will be able to demonstrate mastery and autonomous working in an extended area of sexual and reproductive medicine practice.

This course is a collaboration between the Faculties of Health, Science and the Law School and utilises our combined unique resources of a full size court room for assessments by qualified legal experts in providing oral evidence in court, along with a fully refurbished Crime Scene House, complete with CCTV and an observation room, where you will be assessed by forensic experts and experienced ex-police officers. The award is aimed at all nurses and healthcare professionals working in a custody, or sexual offences role. The course will be competency assessed and has been developed with consideration to the Department of Health core elements of Advanced Practice. (DH, 2010)

This award will underpin the legal, forensic and clinical knowledge to ensure practitioners work in an evidenced based manner and will fulfil the requirements to be a competent witness in court. The course will embrace the principles set by the FFLM, UKAFN, NPIA, along with other regulatory and professional bodies.

For those practitioners following the custodial pathway, the content will include PACE, Safer Detention and Handling, along with the Road Traffic Law.

For those following the sexual assault pathway, this will include competency in assessing victims of sexual assault, aftercare needs and understanding the evidence base related to sexual assault.

This course is designed to provide students with an overview of historical and current issues and debates in the area of sexual and reproductive health, with special attention to power relations, gender and a global economic perspective. In addition, it will equip students with insight into rights-based approaches and skills to critically analyse and develop sexual and reproductive policies, services and interventions.

Potential participants note that this is not a clinical course.

Course participants explore the socio-economic, political and organizational dimensions of reproductive health.

Content includes:

-constructions of sexuality
-conferences and contestation: historical development of conceptualisations of sexual and reproductive health
-rights-based approaches
-theories about the relationships between development, population growth and reproductive health and how these inform SRH programmes

A PG Cert requires 60 credits and a post graduate diploma requires 120 credits. If you do a dissertation in addition to the short courses, you will gain 180 credits.

If you register for an award, you can have up to 4 years for a PG Cert, 5 years for a PG Dip and 7 years for a MSc to complete in part-time mode.

Combining theory and practice with placements, this programme offers registered nurses and midwives the opportunity to study sexual and reproductive health theory and apply new knowledge and skills to clinical practice.

About the programme

Sexual health is a national priority in Scotland. Many traditional family planning and genito-urinary services have integrated in order to provide a holistic, one-stop-shop approach to care.

Clinical practice is integrated with the theoretical component of the programme and may be started after the first six days of theory. Health boards allocate clinical placements to students and clinic times vary depending on the health boards.

The focus is on working in partnership with clients to promote excellence in sexual and reproductive healthcare.

Your learning

Three modules are taken together in one trimester:

Reproductive Health – explores contemporary issues in contraception and reproductive health

Genito-urinary Medicine – offers you an opportunity to explore contemporary issues in genitourinary medicine (GUM)

Sexual and Reproductive Health Practice – gives you the opportunity to apply theory learned from Reproductive Health and Genitourinary Medicine modules to clinical practice within sexual and reproductive health clinics in health boards throughout the west of Scotland.

Practical experience

Students will undertake fifty hours clinical practice which must be completed by December. Clinical placements will be allocated to the
student by the health board.

Our campuses are equipped with artificial simulated environments with contemporary healthcare technology, where you’ll learn in a realistic context, to put your knowledge into practice. The unpredictability of patient symptoms are mimicked using sophisticated software in a clinical ward setting, ranging from low to high dependency beds.

Investment in the Domus Initiative – an older adult artificial home environment – provides you with experience in caring for older people and dementia care. In a first for the Scottish university sector, we have established A Community Orientated Resource for Nursing (ACORN) where students can practice within a simulated primary care environment.

Lanarkshire and Paisley campuses also provide midwifery students with excellent learning and teaching environments with facilities and equipment that includes a birthing room with maternal simulator and a birthing pool for simulated water births.

This is Europe’s only graduate course in reproductive health research and is designed for those interested in acquiring the research skills necessary to conduct policy-relevant research into sexual and reproductive health. It provides a non-clinical foundation in family planning, obstetric health, AIDS and sexually-transmitted infections.

This Master's course is recognized by the ESRC as providing high quality research training and a small number of ESRC scholarships (including 1+3 scholarships) are available to UK or EU residents. These are advertised each year with the School scholarships information.

The curriculum has a focus on middle- and low-income settings but also provides excellent training in the principles and methods of research for high-income countries.

Project Report:
During the summer months (July-August), students complete a research project. Acceptable types of project are: data analysis; a project proposal; an original literature or policy review.

Students normally remain in London for the preparation of their project report. Exceptionally, and only if appropriate, part of the project period may be spent away from the School, whether in the UK or abroad. Arrangements for this must be discussed and agreed with the Course Director.

Intercalating this course

Undergraduate medical students can take a year out either to pursue related studies or work. The School welcomes applications from medical students wishing to intercalate after their third year of study from any recognised university in the world.

This MA in Understanding Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse is unique and represents the first psychologically informed programme of its kind.

It is particularly suitable for people wanting to increase their grasp of the interplay between mental distress, domestic violence and sexual abuse. The programme will offer a blended learning approach with a mixture of online and face to face contact. The online components will be largely focused on the acquisition of theoretical knowledge through computer mediated activities via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

The classroom-based content of the programme will have an emphasis on experiential and reflective learning which will help you understand the process of identifying, assessing and managing both perpetrators and victims. Your learning will be underpinned by a unique synthesising of psychodynamic, systemic, cognitive behavioural and social theories to examine the impact of being abusive or of being abused. The programme focuses on looking at practice and research from these theoretical perspectives and will consider abusiveness and its impact in different cultural and social contexts from childhood to older age.

The learning will be provided by a cross-disciplinary team that covers approaches from the social work, community and youth work, cross-sectoral arts, and therapeutic approaches including art and dance psychotherapy, psychodynamic, counselling and cognitive behavioural approaches.

You'll be assessed through a mix of coursework, presentations, and a final dissertation.

AIMS

LSTM education courses are taught within a dynamic environment by staff working at the cutting-edge of research in tropical medicine and global health. Provide a critical understanding of a range of health policies and strategies in a variety of social, epidemiological, cultural, economic and political settings in middle- and low- income countries.

Enable students to analyse critically, evaluate and conduct responsive, public health-related research and apply evidence to everyday practice.

Produce graduates who are experienced, committed, informed, proactive and effective professionals, capable of taking substantial and leading professional roles in order to promote improved health and well-being in middle and low income countries.

Facilitate high quality learning that is informed by critical analysis of current research.

Develop independent and reflective approaches to study that will enable graduates to continue to learn in the future.

CAREERS

There are many employment opportunities within the Sexual & Reproductive Health field with small and large NGOs, UN organisations, as well as reproductive health community programmes and family planning, working towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There are also many research opportunities within this field. Useful for programme managers, nurses, midwives, and doctors who are working in the field of sexual and reproductive health. This course is also suitable for public health practitioners and for people who need to work with needs assessments and monitoring & evaluation frameworks.

The Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) offers a range of awards through the Master’s Programme in Global Health and Development. These include the MSc Global Health, on which the majority of our students enroll, and provides the broadest range of choice. Our MSc Sexual and Reproductive Health, and MSc Social Development and Health, are our two more specialised awards reflecting focused pathways through the programme. Students should apply for the master’s award that best suits their career needs, but are able to revise their choice – subject to having studied appropriate modules – before progressing to the dissertation stage. For those not wishing to pursue a full master’s degree at this time, we offer a number of Postgraduate Certificate awards.

MSc Global Health

Recent years have seen increased attention on the field of global health as a major driver of development, international co-operation and diplomacy. Global health is a multidisciplinary field of study that takes a global perspective on the state of people’s health, and enhances knowledge and implementation of effective intervention strategies through a systematic examination of health problems and their determinants.

This course is particularly suited to individuals working, or planning to work, in enhancing population health in middle or low-income countries, within governmental (eg Ministry of Health), non-governmental or intergovernmental organisations (eg WHO or UN agencies). It will equip you to work effectively at a senior level to promote the health and social wellbeing of populations through the development of effective and responsive health systems. It will orient you to issues in which staff at the Institute are recognised to have made world-leading research contributions, such as supporting health systems strengthening in fragile and confict-affected states, and mental health and psychosocial support for vulnerable populations. Participants are typically drawn from a broad range of backgrounds, including physicians, nurses, health ministries and the NGO sector.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching is comprised of a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises and projects. Assessment is continuous and incorporates assignments, action plans, projects and examinations. For their dissertation projects, students can chose to collect desk-based studies, or conduct primary data collection in collaboration with national or international organisations working in health and development.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module which you study on campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your exact attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are studying full or part time. Modules typically run over five weeks and involve two sessions of three hours in class each week. In addition, for each module students spend around 10-12 hours of each week on preparatory class work independently and with colleagues, including readings and exercises available on dedicated web-based learning platforms.

Modules

Students study core modules totalling 60 credits addressing such subjects as Global Health and Social Policy; Researching Global Health and Development; Global Public Health; and Health Systems. A further 60 credits are then selected from the broad range of classes available within the Institute or from other QMU programmes recognised as of relevance. The former includes modules such as Qualitative Research Methods, Gender Health and Development, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Social Development Policy and Practice and a range of elective classes available subject to student demand. The latter includes modules related to leadership, research, advocacy and specialised fields of study such as nutrition and epidemiology.

For the MSc award you will then complete a dissertation on an approved topic related to global heath and development (60 credits).

Careers

As a graduate you will be well equipped for employment as a global health practitioner, senior health manager or policy maker working in, or advising regarding, a developing country or one in economic transition. Graduates have attained positions as: health programme manager; humanitarian co-ordinator; civil society programme manager; research and advocacy officer; donor agency health advisor and a variety of advanced positions within home ministries and educational institutions.

Course content

Core Module; Principles of Physical Assessment which can be undertaken either via Distance Learning or Face to Face Attendance (1 Afternoon a week for 12 weeks).

Research Methods and Methodology Module is a Pre-Requisite for Project Based Change and Research Dissertation Modules and therefore mandatory if you intend to continue onto the Masters Stage of the Award. Attendance is either 3 days Face to Face or via Distance Learning).

30 Credits of this stage can be utilised in a number of different ways:
-Level 6 or 7 Credits from Staffordshire University or other Universities modules which match the Award Learning Outcomes (to be agreed by Award Leader).
-Level 6 or 7 Credits previously gained from Staffordshire University or other Universities within the previous 5 years which match the Award Learning Outcomes (to be agreed by Award Leader).

APEL via the APEL procedure, Level 7 Credits previously gained from Staffordshire University or other Universities over 5 years old which match the Award Learning Outcomes (to be agreed by Award Leader).

Other admission requirements

It is expected that you will have a minimum academic qualification of a First Degree or equivalent. If you do not have a first degree you will need to demonstrate you have evidence of recent study at this level.

This award is designed by Health Professionals for those who work in the field of forensic medicine. This long awaited innovation is the first forensic qualification, professionally badged by the United Kingdom Association of Forensic Nurses (UKAFN), providing recognition in this specialist field.

This course is a collaboration between the Faculties of Health, Science and the Law School and utilises our combined unique resources of a full size court room for assessments by qualified legal experts in providing oral evidence in court, along with a fully refurbished Crime Scene House, complete with CCTV and an observation room, where you will be assessed by forensic experts and experienced ex-police officers. The award is aimed at all nurses and healthcare professionals working in a custody, or sexual offences role. The course will be competency assessed and has been developed with consideration to the Department of Health core elements of Advanced Practice. (DH, 2010)

This award will underpin the legal, forensic and clinical knowledge to ensure practitioners work in an evidenced based manner and will fulfil the requirements to be a competent witness in court. The course will embrace the principles set by the FFLM, UKAFN, NPIA, along with other regulatory and professional bodies.

For those practitioners following the custodial pathway, the content will include PACE, Safer Detention and Handling, along with the Road Traffic Law.

For those following the sexual assault pathway, this will include competency in assessing victims of sexual assault, aftercare needs and understanding the evidence base related to sexual assault.

One of the distinctive factors of this course is in the title ‘Advanced Forensic Practice’. The term ‘Advanced’ in the title has not been used lightly. The Department of Health (DH) published a Position Statement on Advanced Level Nursing (DH, 2010), which describes the benchmark of Advanced Level Nursing as; a level of practice well beyond that of first registration, rather than a speciality or role description.

Particularly unique is the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Sciences Crime Scene House, which displays crime scenes, with cameras to record every aspect of the students forensic practice in collecting and assessing evidence, along with the state of art Science Block, which houses the most up-to-date science laboratories. Live models will be used for students to assess and map wounds, undertake forensic sampling and body-mapping exercises. The Law School has a full sized Court Room, again with cameras to allow formative feedback for students giving oral evidence. Providing students with these rare insights into real life situations, within safe learning environments, will provide the best possible preparation for the reality of practising in forensic environments.
