On this Sexual Health Studies programme you’ll critically evaluate contemporary thinking and its impact upon sexual health knowledge and practice. Compulsory modules explore and evaluate the specific knowledge and skills required for the study of sexual health studies at Master’s level, evaluating underpinning philosophies and relationships which influence evidence-based practice, within sexual health and covering critical thinking, moral reasoning, professionalism and skills development. Optional modules are available providing you with choice and flexibility to meet individual practice and professional needs. The clinical modules on this course have been specifically designed to enable first level NMC Registered Practitioners to prepare to be able to undertake further professional qualifications including the Nurse Diploma from the Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Health (NDFSRH) and the British Association for Sexual Health & HIV STIF Competencies.
The course has a blended delivery both in the classroom and via elearning; therefore potentially accessible to students in all parts of the world. It utilises web technology to deliver multimedia teaching materials and includes live interactive sessions on a regular basis. Online activities are supported by email contact with tutors and peer groups, message boarding and scheduled live personal tutorials.

Depending on choice of optional modules, assessment will include: essays, critical reflective account, written reports, project work, presentation of research proposal, oral presentations, clinical competency documentation, case studies, development of teaching materials, summary of recommendations for clinical practice, and a dissertation of 15,000 words.
The course is composed of modules of learning that, where possible, allow for individual choice and flexibility in learning. The MSc Sexual Health Studies programme is delivered on a part-time and full-time basis divided into nine modules.

Examine the impact of being abusive or being abused. You will look at theoretical perspectives considering abusiveness and its impact in different international, cultural and social contexts.
This MA in Understanding Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse is unique and represents the first psychologically informed programme of its kind.
It is particularly suitable for people wanting to increase their grasp of the interplay between mental distress, domestic violence and sexual abuse. The programme will offer a blended learning approach with a mixture of online and face to face contact. The online components will be largely focused on the acquisition of theoretical knowledge through computer mediated activities via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
The classroom-based content of the programme will have an emphasis on experiential and reflective learning which will help you understand the process of identifying, assessing and managing both perpetrators and victims. This aspect of the programme will be delivered in blocks preferably over weekends to make the study more accessible to working adults.
Individual modules on the programme are likely to be valued as part of a continuing professional development plan for psychological therapists and other workers in the field.

Your learning will be underpinned by a unique synthesising of psychodynamic, systemic, cognitive behavioural and social theories to examine the impact of being abusive or of being abused. The programme focuses on looking at practice and research from these theoretical perspectives and will consider abusiveness and its impact in different cultural and social contexts from childhood to older age.
The learning will be provided by a cross-disciplinary team that covers approaches from the social work, community and youth work, cross-sectoral arts, and therapeutic approaches including art and dance psychotherapy, psychodynamic, counselling and cognitive behavioural approaches.

This programme equips graduates to provide leadership and technical support in public health in middle and low income countries. It covers a wide range of topics in public and global health, including key disciplinary skills in epidemiology and social science and applied topics such as disease control and programme management. The programme has a specialist focus on the strengthening of health systems in support of sexual and reproductive health (including maternal & neonatal health), facilitating the implementation and scale-up of good practice and raising awareness amongst politicians, professionals and the public of the need for more effective use of knowledge and tools to impact on SRH indicators. Following the taught component, participants complete a dissertation including a period of applied research either overseas or in Liverpool.

The Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) offers a range of awards through the Master’s Programme in Global Health and Development. These include the MSc Global Health, on which the majority of our students enroll, and provides the broadest range of choice. Our MSc Sexual and Reproductive Health, and MSc Social Development and Health, are our two more specialised awards reflecting focused pathways through the programme. Students should apply for the master’s award that best suits their career needs, but are able to revise their choice – subject to having studied appropriate modules – before progressing to the dissertation stage. Recent years have seen increased attention on the field of global health as a major driver of development, international co-operation and diplomacy. Global health is a multidisciplinary field of study that takes a global perspective on the state of people’s health, and enhances knowledge and implementation of effective intervention strategies through a systematic examination of health problems and their determinants.
This course is particularly suited to individuals working, or planning to work, in enhancing population health in middle or low-income countries, within governmental (eg Ministry of Health), non-governmental or intergovernmental organisations (eg WHO or UN agencies). It will equip you to work effectively at a senior level to promote the health and social wellbeing of populations through the development of effective and responsive health systems. It will orient you to issues in which staff at the Institute are recognised to have made world-leading research contributions, such as supporting health systems strengthening in fragile and confict-affected states, and mental health and psychosocial support for vulnerable populations. Participants are typically drawn from a broad range of backgrounds, including physicians, nurses, health ministries and the NGO sector.
Teaching is comprised of a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises and projects. Assessment is continuous and incorporates assignments, action plans, projects and examinations. For their dissertation projects, students can chose to collect desk-based studies, or conduct primary data collection in collaboration with national or international organisations working in health and development.
Each module which you study on campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your exact attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are studying full or part time. Modules typically run over five weeks and involve two sessions of three hours in class each week. In addition, for each module students spend around 10-12 hours of each week on preparatory class work independently and with colleagues, including readings and exercises available on dedicated web-based learning platforms.
Students study core modules totalling 60 credits addressing such subjects as Global Health and Social Policy; Researching Global Health and Development; Global Public Health; and Health Systems. A further 60 credits are then selected from the broad range of classes available within the Institute or from other QMU programmes recognised as of relevance. The former includes modules such as Qualitative Research Methods, Gender Health and Development, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Social Development Policy and Practice and a range of elective classes available subject to student demand. The latter includes modules related to leadership, research, advocacy and specialised fields of study such as nutrition and epidemiology.
For the MSc award you will then complete a dissertation on an approved topic related to global heath and development (60 credits).
As a graduate you will be well equipped for employment as a global health practitioner, senior health manager or policy maker working in, or advising regarding, a developing country or one in economic transition. Graduates have attained positions as: health programme manager; humanitarian co-ordinator; civil society programme manager; research and advocacy officer; donor agency health advisor and a variety of advanced positions within home ministries and educational institutions.

The Masters by Research student will undertake a scoping project of sexual health initiatives across Scotland in partnership with colleagues from The Scottish Government, NHS and Third Sector. The central aim of the study is to better understand initiatives currently undertaken across Scotland in regards to sexual health, and how these are being evaluated. The results of the study will feed into the Scottish Government’s review of the current Sexual Health and Blood Borne Viruses Framework. The student will develop research skills in systematic literature review and service evaluation. We welcome candidates who have experience in the field of sexual health as well as candidates with a social science/social policy background.
