The MA Marketing course at Portsmouth Business School aims to make you highly employable in the field of marketing. You will develop advanced marketing knowledge and skills and also develop skills in critical appraisal, team working, debating, writing, research and giving presentations.

In the first teaching block you will critically examine the fundamental concepts and practices of marketing. Alongside this you will explore the tools and techniques used by marketing departments in business analysis and research.

In the second teaching block you will interact with senior marketing practitioners and explore contemporary issues in marketing such as digital marketing and the impact of social media, sustainability, crisis management and the relationship between marketing and sales.

The course is classroom-based and involves group and individual study. It includes field trips to Morgan Motor Cars in Coventry and local marketing communications agencies.

Work experience -

Several units provide opportunities to work on live projects. For the Marketing Consultancy Project, for example, past students have completed research for Symantec, Southampton City Council, the Leprosy Mission, the Nuffield Theatre, Cunard and Microsoft.

Placements are available during the summer vacation, giving you the chance to work closely with a UK business and, by agreement, undertake research for your dissertation.

Assessment -

Graduation costs -

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. The MSc Marketing with Brand Management is a specialist, 12-month full-time taught postgraduate course. All students will register for the MSc Course in Marketing in the first instance and be given the opportunity to change degree pathway at the end of the first semester.

COURSE CONTENT

The first year of the Master is a fulltime year in Grenoble or London.
The program covers four key areas of study for Marketers, each of the 19 modules follow a logical connection to the one before.

The content of the program may be adapted from year to year to take into account the needs of industry. Class attendance is compulsory.

Integrative Marketing Case Study

Using an existing business, the “Live Business Case” will provide the students with the opportunity to pull together all the aspects of the program. Students will analyze a marketing problem in the Company and use their skills and knowledge to solve issues and propose solutions. This takes place in small groups and in a limited time. Assessment for the case study will be based on a group assignment with a group presentation to the Company.

At the end of the one-year full time part of the program, each student will be required to complete a Final Management Project of approximately 20,000 words in length, under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study. This will be business oriented and coherent with your program's objectives. A student may choose to write his/her project on a topic grounded in his/her internship experience.

Social marketing is the systematic application of marketing concepts and techniques to achieve specific behavioural goals leading to an individual or social good. Social marketing builds on and complements the core discipline of marketing. For health, behaviour change, environment and public communications specialists it is a way of understanding how tools of commercial marketing can help with the development of effective services and interventions based on consumer insight.

The Marketing (Social Marketing) MSc has a strong focus on understanding the motivations of the target audience when planning programmes to influence, and ultimately change, behaviour.

The course develops your knowledge of both the theory and practice of marketing at an advanced level. It will provide you with an in-depth and critical understanding of research methodologies, and marketing planning and strategy.

At the end of your time in Brighton you will have a good understanding of social marketing strategy, with the skills and knowledge sought after by employers such as national government, local government, social marketing consultancies, health authorities and not-for-profit organisations in the UK and internationally.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).

Course content:

Normally students attend three-hour blocks of teaching and seminar activities based on specialist reading, research and case studies.

What you will study on the MSc Strategic Marketing?
The course starts by embedding the fundamentals of the subject in the learning through core modules covering key areas such as brand management, leadership from a marketing perspective and planning for a global market place. These modules consists of insights based topics such as consumer psychology and customer analysis, strategy based subjects such as marketing communications and product management, and implementation in areas such as digital marketing and experiential marketing. The course ends with a dissertation, allowing you to explore in depth a strategic marketing topic of your choice.

Self-directed/ independent learning

Much of your learning at university takes place outside class sessions.
