Northampton Integrated Learning Environment (NILE) is a dedicated online university learning space for students. Course content

The rationale for the course is based on the recognition that the effectiveness of all IT Services is a vital aspect to the prosperity of any organisation. The course embraces best practice from leading service providers, and by continual reassessment, ensures all material is relevant to today’s computing and management expectations.

The course encompasses IT Service Management through a series of progressive units developing the student’s knowledge from fundamental concepts, through to units addressing IS strategy. Subjects covered include: management information, quality management, application development, infrastructure, service support and delivery, continuity planning, people and operational issues of implementing IT Service Management Best Practice. The course addresses current standards for IT Service Management, such as ISO20000 and ITIL®.

Core learning will be delivered electronically and you will be encouraged to engage with your fellow students and tutors online. Studying online will give you the flexibility to study at your convenience* without the need to travel or physically attend classes, whilst enhancing your employment opportunities. You will be supported throughout the process by our great teaching staff that are professionally qualified and have industry and academic experience to share with you.

Studying this programme will give you an opportunity to undertake PRINCE2 qualifications.

For part-time students, the taught component is delivered over two academic years, with a commitment of around six hours on one day each week. What you will study

Stage 1 – Postgraduate Certificate

- Managing Resources and Projects
Develop the capability of dealing with current issues associated with resourcing the UK public sector.

- Managing People and Organisations in the Public Sector
Analyse key concepts in organisational behaviour and management and evaluate these in a public sector context.

- Strategy and Leadership
Critically evaluate various approaches to strategy and leadership in the public service context and gain the practical skills to lead and manage services effectively.

Stage 2 – Postgraduate Diploma
You will study the equivalent of three full modules:

- Policy and Innovation
Develop an awareness of different theoretical approaches to public policy making and the ability to promote reflective thinking around public service innovation.
- Partnership, Improvement and Delivery
Critically appraise recent approaches to managing and improving performance. You’ll examine and analyse the opportunities and constraints of providing collaborative public services.

- Conducting Research
Develop your ability to plan, execute and write up a piece of research whilst gaining a critical understanding of the nature of social and policy research.

Stage 3 – MSc

You will complete a dissertation on a topic you have selected.

Learning and teaching methods

You can study full-time or part-time. Full-time study involves completing the six taught modules and the dissertation over one full academic year. There will be 12 class contact hours delivered over two days each week.

For part-time students, the taught component is delivered over two academic years, with a commitment of around six hours on one day each week. You can expect to complete the course over three academic years, but our flexible modular structure allows you to study at your own pace and combine study with work and/or personal commitments.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

If you are a manager, or aspire to a position of significant managerial responsibility in a public, quasi-public or voluntary organisation, this course will develop your understanding, competence and confidence as a manager.

The course will improve your ability to manage projects effectively, from setting objectives and producing plans to analysis and evaluation.

Upon graduation, not only can you be confident in your knowledge and understanding of the role of a manager within the public sector, but, you will have the key transferable skills to enable you to deliver best practice in the workplace.

Delivery and Assessment

There are no written examinations for our Master’s degrees, instead assessment is achieved through work based post module assignments and a work based dissertation.

We believe that applying the ideas, tools and techniques learned on the programme directly into your work environment is the best way of embedding learning in a manner that is meaningful to both you and your employer.

To be awarded your Master’s degree you must complete ten modules, ttwo supporting events (Induction, Research Methodologies) and your dissertation. This typically takes three years on a part time basis.

Each module runs over four and a half days and requires approximately 100 hours of study time including lectures, seminars, independent study and a post module assignment. Modules are fully residential with accommodation and meals provided at on of the conference centres at the University of Warwick.

Dissertations are supervised by a WMG tutor and a supervisor from your company and make up 50% of the programme.

- Fundamentals of PRINCE2 project management
The module outlines the fundamental principles, methodologies, methods, techniques and tools that are used in PRINCE2 approach to project management.Project technical skills are developed through the practice of planning, executing and evaluating a new product, service or process.

- Business case development
The module outlines continued justification for the project. It highlights a range of qualitative and quantitative approaches used in the construction of a business case. Technical skills are developed in exploring costs, benefits, risks and schedules which are used to evaluate alternative project scenarios and provides the rationale for the preferred project option.

- Operational research and systems approaches
This module develops a range of quantitative and qualitative modelling skills with which financial and other information can be structured, manipulated and used for business decision support and project control and evaluation.

- Project: Value, innovation and change
This module provides a thorough grounding on how projects and organisations might deal with various aspects of innovation, value development as means of executing the scope of the project and management change from a business project perspectives. - Fundamentals of AGILE project management
The module outlines the principles, methodologies, methods, techniques, tools and metaphors that are applied to scrum/agile projects via the AgilePM Foundation practices. Different scrum skills (i.e. soft and technical) are developed through the practice of an iterative and incremental process, and underpinned by a distinctive quality approach in order to produce a product for a business need.

- Quality standards and management
The module focuses on methodologies; methods and techniques used to enhance the quality of project. Various concepts, principles and models associated with contemporary quality approaches are examined and applied. Additionally, key product and process improvement standards are reviewed through quality auditing of ISO and standards management.

- Project risk management
This module examines the systematic process of identifying, analysing, monitoring, controlling and responding to mitigate project risk as considered through M_o_R certification and also develop an understanding as a PMO the principles of P3O, P3M3 and PPS. The module brings together tools to enhance positive project objectives while dealing with negatives concerns and considering project risk management and finance.

- Research methods
The module enables you to use and undertake different types of Business Project Management research. Various research strategies and associated methodologies, methods, techniques and tools are examined and practiced. Additionally, these strategies and approaches are linked with business Project Management metaphors and scientific philosophies to develop your dissertation of a business project management theme.

- Dissertation
The dissertation aims to bring together all the various methodologies considered in the course, giving you the chance to illustrate mastery in the field of project management.

We've developed this course with three interconnected areas in mind of profession, practice and research. As a result, every module is built with an awareness of the requirements of project management bodies such as the APM (in the UK) and the Project Management Institute (in the USA). The bodies of knowledge of these organisations are combined with PRINCE2 project management methodology and MS Project, and applied to real world project assignments that will also require the application of a variety of methodologies and techniques to give you invaluable practical experience, which you can further enhance through work placements undertaken while studying for your dissertation.

Our academic team then take all of this knowledge and experience and develop and apply new theories and approaches as part of their research, which in turn influences how project management develops as a discipline. Programme Structure

Our MSc in Human Resource Management and Consulting is an intensive full-time programme lasting 12 months.
The programme is divided into two 11 week semesters and the dissertation period which runs from June-September.

Semester 1
During the first semester you will study the following five units (modules):

Semester 2
During the second semester there are two compulsory units (modules) and three optional units (modules).

Choose two or three out of the following units:
-Leading and Managing Change
-Organisation Development Consulting
-Project Management
-Strategy and HRM

Choose none or one out of the following units:

Dissertation

During the final three months of the degree you will produce a dissertation. This is your opportunity to explore a particular topic that has been covered during the programme in far greater depth.

Teaching & Learning Methods

You will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods that could include: interactive lectures, case studies, seminar presentations and group project work. As this is a Masters level course, we place a significant emphasis on independent, directed, private study that is often conducted in learning sets or groups.

Assessment

A variety of individual and group assessment methods are used throughout the degree including assignments, exams, presentations, reports and exercises. The dissertation consists of a 10-15,000 word extended piece of individual research, supervised by a member of faculty.
