This new course explores the urban development and planning challenges faced by governments and people in these regions and provides you with the analytical and practical tools to address them.

The MA uses cutting-edge theories in both urban and development studies to engage with changes in the global south, including: the globalisation of production and consumption, rapid urbanisation, environmental change, and the spread
of new forms of governance.

Optional modules include a team-based student consultancy project for an external client in the field of international urban development. There’s also a field class in the global south.

To deal with the complex challenges of urban development, planners have to know how to work with other professionals. This course equips you with the skills to produce sensitive plans and creative designs, taking into account the financial and practical issues associated with property development.

This course will develop your skills in urban design, planning and the development of cities.

You’ll study the UK urban experience and also rapidly urbanising cities in Asia and Africa. The course draws on leading teaching and research at the University, combining the urban design expertise of the School of Architecture and the international planning expertise of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. The 2 year master programme (120 ECTS) is jointly organized by 12 institutes leading in agricultural economics and rural development from all over the world. The Master’s Programme in International Affairs and Governance (MIA) is designed for students who seek a professional career in business, government, non-profit organisations and international agencies. MIA graduates are trained as generalists and know how to integrate the specialist knowledge required to address today’s pressing political, economic and social problems. Combining interdisciplinary study with a result-oriented approach, the MIA programme prepares graduates for a world in which leaders and professionals must increasingly be able to work across borders, disciplines and sectors.

Curriculum

The MIA programme is based on a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates the diverse perspectives constitutive of Economics, Political Science, Business Administration, and Law. Compulsory courses provide the conceptual foundations, Research methods, and knowledge indispensable for a thorough understanding of the complexity of international problems. Specific courses and practical projects enable you to choose and refine your areas of specialisation, and develop your own personal profile. The programme includes an attractive array of independent electives and contextual studies. Writing a Master’s thesis enables you to concentrate on a research question of your own choice. The MIA is particularly strong in the fields of trade and development, peace and security, as well as democracy and governance. The curriculum skilfully merges St. Gallen’s renowned expertise in economics and business with the analytical study of practical issues pertaining to politics and society as a whole. Who is it for?

This course is for students looking for an opportunity to explore the impact of media and communications on international policy and within sociological context.

The course will appeal to students with a general interest in communication studies and cross-disciplinary interests in development studies, sociology and politics.

Objectives

Communication is integral to development programmes. At a time when ideas about freedom of expression, democracy, human rights and access to natural and material resources guide development projects across the world, the question about the role of media and communications for social change becomes ever more pertinent.

Development is taken as a contested concept that translates into courses for advocating democratic forms of participation, policy initiatives and training activities in media and communications sectors in different geographical regions.

The International Communications and Development MA provides you with an interdisciplinary framework for understanding and critically assessing the role of communications for and in development projects.

It also gives you a broad interdisciplinary overview of developments in broadcasting, telecommunications, the press and information technology drawing on economics, political science, international relations, development theory, sociology and law.

On the course you will develop an ability to participate in policy making and evaluation in the context of changing national and global economic and political relations.

The Department of Sociology at City offers you an extensive range of module options. This enables you to specialise in your particular areas of interest, developing your critical skills and advancing your knowledge, culminating with you undertaking an extended piece of original research.

Teaching and learning

The educational aims are achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive sessions, practical workshops and small group classes supported by a personal tutorial system. You are encouraged to undertake extensive reading in order to understand the topics covered in lectures and classes and to broaden and deepen their knowledge of the subject. In the course of self-directed hours you are expected to read from the set module bibliography, prepare your class participation, collect and organize source material for your coursework, to plan and write your coursework.

The Department also runs a personal tutorial system which provides support for teaching and learning and any problems can be identified and dealt with early.

During the second term the Department offers a Dissertation Workshop to guide you on your dissertation outline.

The course focuses on the relationship between communication, development and democracy. Over the course of the year you will develop your knowledge of media and communication studies within the context of globalisation, Political communication and the work of international organisations and nongovernmental organisations in development communication.

Your will also cover more specific areas such as media representation (national and trans-national) and audiences and the communications policies that affect them.

You will take three 30-credit core modules and either two 15-credit modules or one 30-credit module elective modules.

The majority of our students are employed during the first year of graduation. More than 70 per cent continue to work in healthcare and some are already established as leading specialists. The majority have been employed in the NHS; some have also been employed in leading academic institutions and industry.

The MA Social Work enables those with a BA degree to obtain the new professional qualification in Social Work, as well as a Masters degree. The University of Birmingham is the oldest running social work education programme in the country and we are proud of our history. The MA Social Work welcomes applications from international students.

The MA follows an exciting programme. Committed to social justice, anti-oppressive practice and relationship based social work and drawing upon a number of disciplines informing social work practice, it includes the study of social work values, knowledge, law, theories, methods and skills. You undertake two assessed social work placements, the first lasting 70 days and the second 100 days. International students undertake the same placements as UK students and obtain a detailed understanding of the operation of the English social work system. Additional teaching offers students the opportunity to focus on particular areas of interest and exciting new projects, such as the International Exchange Project, and the award-winning Survivor Arts Project, allow students to move beyond the core curriculum and explore different ways of seeing the world and more creative ways of working.

This professionally accredited postgraduate programme has been carefully designed as a ‘fast-track’ conversion course for graduates of any discipline who wish to make a career in planning or in related fields. It aims to broaden students’ appreciation of planning and urban theory whilst providing them with the necessary skills to engage in critical and creative problem-solving.

Degree information

Students analyse the definition of, and solutions to, urban and regional planning problems and the nature of existing planning systems and practices. Emphasis is placed on the importance of a spatial and comparative perspective to planning and the need for integrated solutions to planning problems and the achievement of sustainable development.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (90 credits), one specialism with two modules (30 credits), and a research dissertation (60 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma, six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules from the list of possible specialisms available (30 credits), full-time nine months, is offered.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through individual and group project work, skills-based practical and IT work, lectures, tutorials and seminars. A short field course based in a European city outside the UK will take place in the second term. Assessment is through individual and group work, essays, examination, skills-based practical work, and the dissertation.

It includes a work-based placement within one or more public, private or third sector organisations in the West Midlands area. Policy into Practice is also offered without a work-based placement.

Specialist option in health policy

Students can now study an MA or PGDiploma in Policy into Practice with Integrated Placement (Health) which has a particular focus on heath policies and interventions. Developed in collaboration with the Health Services Management Centre (HSMC) the programmes cover UK health policy, as well as the experiences of, and challenges facing, other countries in relation to health policy and population health and wellbeing. The programme has been designed for national and local government officers, as well as officers of non-governmental organisations who are involved in health policy-making or delivering health services in countries other than the UK. Students take a combination of modules on social policy and health services management. For module options please see the course brochure. The MA includes a 20 week work-based placement in a non-clinical health setting, and the PG Diploma includes an 8 week work based placement in a non-clinical health setting.
