This programme takes graduates from many disciplines and provides them with the skills to plan, design, build and promote effective websites. It is designed for people who manage corporate websites, those who wish to start their own web business and those who would like to build a career in the web design industry. The design of excellent websites presents a notable intellectual challenge and, during the programme, students develop a contemporary, professional and 'real-world' approach. Our objective is to provide a balanced education in the three main aspects of web design: technical, functional and aesthetic.

The technical aspects provide an understanding of the tools, technologies and principles used for the design and development of contemporary websites. This includes the creation of semantically correct markup, the separation of presentation from content (HTML and CSS) and compliance with web standards (W3C).

The functional aspects focus on the creation of websites that provide a good user experience. Principles include, information architecture, content strategy, accessibility, search engine marketing and optimisation (SEM/SEO).

The aesthetic aspects of web design are considered in relation to graphic, artistic, typographic and business objectives, including corporate identity and branding.

The Department is based in a new state of the art building designed by the award winning architects Heneghan Peng; it is equipped with fourteen rooftop landscapes, cutting edge digital workshops, extensive design studios, a world-class library and two gallery spaces.

Our building is located in the heart of Greenwich, the newest addition to a suite of magnificent buildings that occupy the UNESCO World Heritage site and the location of the Greenwich Prime Meridian.

The aims of the programme are:

If you are looking to top-up your skillset and are unable to commit to the full programme of study, there is the opportunity to study modules on an individual basis.

The course aims to introduce you to a wide range of technologies and techniques, providing you with an overview of the digital-marketing landscape. It is delivered with significant input from industry partners and much of the work you will complete is based on live digital marketing projects in collaboration with real businesses including website and SEO audits, content creation, marketing and digital PR. What you will study

STAGE 1

You will learn and produce a range of media, focused on a digital marketing context, including web-design, audio/video recording and editing and graphics processing. You will analyse, evaluate and critically appraise digital marketing concepts and develop campaign strategies for real life business scenarios.

STAGE 2

You will explore the importance of PR in the digital marketing sphere and gain first-hand understanding of how to approach digital PR in a strategic context. You will work in teams to design strategic campaigns that showcase your knowledge and skills. You will begin to explore a wide range of research methods for your Project/Dissertation.

STAGE 3

The Project/Dissertation can take the form of a practical project, such as an analysis of a real business problem, as an alternative to the traditional academic dissertation of 15,000 words. You will work independently but under tutorial supervision, to undertake the research and prepare the project/dissertation.

The course is delivered with a mixture of lectures and seminars. Many of the assessments will be based on real world cases and therefore specialist guest speakers and visits to businesses will also form part of the learning journey. At Master's level, self-management and independent research and study is expected with students being directed and encouraged to deepen their understanding of particular areas of Marketing. Moodle is used as an interactive VLE but the development of a learning community is particularly prevalent at Cardiff Metropolitan with excellent student support.

Assessment

Assessment on the programme is mixed and will include a variety of formats . You are assessed throughout the course on the basis of coursework, presentations and examinations. TEACHING

The course is currently delivered in four blocks of three-day intensive study periods, followed by independent study and online support through the University’s virtual learning environment, Blackboard. Each module is taken and assessed over a six week block. 

From September 2017, this delivery format will change. Students will continue to study a single module for a 6 week period. Face to face teaching will be delivered on campus for two half days each week. In addition, you will attend the taught element of the Business Innovation Programme each Wednesday afternoon during the 6 week blocks, with independent study completed in your own time through Blackboard.  Individual student timetables will be provided during induction week.

ASSESSMENT

Over the duration of your course a range of assessment techniques will be used. Types of assessment include; essays, assignments, exams, multiple choice tests, online tests, group reports, and portfolio work. The weighting between exams and coursework varies between modules and years.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This 12 month postgraduate course aims to produce highly-skilled graduates who are able to operate professionally in today’s PR and digital communication-related industries.

You will develop cutting-edge knowledge and understanding of the role and influence of PR and digital communication within contemporary society, and the demands on and opportunities for PR and digital communication professionals.

This course will involve developing a professional level of practical skills and understanding in the devising and implementation of PR campaign strategies To develop systematic and advanced research techniques for the evaluation and analysis of critical texts and aspects of current research and scholarship at the forefront of the field of Public Relations and digital communications.

In the first trimester, you will study Public Relations & Journalism and Content Creation modules, which will provide a solid basis on which to develop your skills.

The modules you will study in the second trimester are Understanding PR Campaigns, which looks at case studies and strategies, and Professional PR Practice, which incorporates an industry work placement.

In the third trimester, you will work on a Major Project or a Dissertation.

TEACHING

  • Delivery will include lectures and presentations, seminars and workshops, aimed at development of students’ understanding of the theory and practice of PR and digital communications.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Public Relations is one of the fastest growing professions in the UK, employing 62,000 people in 2015.

The importance of the digital economy, and the opportunities and challenges it presents, has been noted by a Lords Select Committee. Its report, entitled Make or Break: The UK’s Digital Future, emphasises the urgent need, at HE level, for industry input, so that graduates are learning job-relevant digital skills. This illustrates the employability value of a postgraduate programme in Public Relations and Digital Communications.

The programme would prepare graduates for work within PR and Digital Communication related industries and feeds into this skills gap in the PR and communications industries. However, it will also provide key transferable skills that are increasingly sought after in today’s job market.
