Law affects every aspect of our lives: from our relationships with other people, to our interactions with shops, banks, companies and governments. Studying law enables you to understand how societies are regulated and how you can change it.

Our LLB Law (Senior Status) is designed for those with an existing degree and provides a comprehensive training in law over a concentrated two-year period. The course gives you exemption from the academic stage of training for the legal profession, allowing you to proceed to the Bar Professional Training Course or the Legal Practice Course.

At Essex we teach the law that matters, with a concern for the demands of justice and commerce. We combine a rigorous legal training with opportunities for developing your practical expertise, and you learn to analyse the law of England and Wales in relation to its European and international frameworks and to apply it in practice.

As a law student, not only will you learn legal rules, but you will also consider the function of law in society, the philosophy of law, policy issues and law reform. You cover all the key areas of law including:

- Property law, land law, equity and trusts
- Law of the European Union
- Contract law and tort law
- Criminal law
- Public law

Law needs good lawyers. We are top 20 in the UK for research excellence (REF 2014), and we are ranked among the top 200 departments on the planet according to the QS World [University] Rankings [2017] for law.

At Essex, we don’t simply prepare you to for the legal profession. We equip you with the skills and knowledge to become an agent for change, whatever career path you choose.

The MA in Mediation and Conflict Intervention at Edward Kennedy Institute, Maynooth University provides a learning experience for those who wish to deepen and integrate their mediation and conflict intervention knowledge and skills. Read more

Overview

The MA in Mediation and Conflict Intervention at Edward Kennedy Institute, Maynooth University provides a learning experience for those who wish to deepen and integrate their mediation and conflict intervention knowledge and skills. The programme delivers specialist professional training in the areas of Organisational and Workplace Mediation, Family Mediation, Commercial Mediation, Restorative Practice and Peace Process Studies, providing the professional knowledge and skills necessary for practice in these areas. Students complete nine modules of 10 credits each over a two-year duration.

This highly experiential programme provides ongoing opportunities to learn reflectively through exercises and in practice through feedback and coaching while formal presentations provide background theory in the specialist areas. Students gain a strong theoretical foundation coupled with skills and practice development leading to a solid grounding in the best practice of constructive conflict intervention processes.

The MA in Mediation and Conflict Intervention is designed for those people who are intently interested in furthering their skills base and knowledge in the field of mediation and conflict intervention. Participants will usually have been working directly or indirectly with people in conflict as a professional or as someone required to handle conflict situations in their work or personal lives. Participating in this programme will further develop theoretical knowledge and applied skills in conflict analysis, mediation and other specialist chosen areas of study. The programme is designed to be an intense learning experience where small class sizes encourage strong skills development and engagement in a continuous and collaborative learning environment.

The course is accredited by the Mediators Institute of Ireland (MII) and students who are not already certified mediators with the MII must undergo and pass the first module (MC615) via assignment and competency assessment. This will enable students to register with the MII as a certified Mediator with eligibility to practice. Completion of the Masters programme will provide further requirements for Practitioner Accreditation. This senior status is achieved when the student has successfully completed the course and also has completed cases to MII standard (see Mediators Institute of Ireland website: http://www.themii.ie).

Course Structure

The Restorative Practices Module (MC608) is structured in three blocks of two days, Thursdays and Fridays. The majority of modules are delivered on campus, however some course days are delivered off campus ( MC608, MC629 and MC630), in the North of Ireland or Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation, Enniskerry. Students take the internship module Mediation Theory into Practice (MC628) off campus.

Students must complete one compulsory module MC601 or MC606 each year, whichever is being delivered in the year. Students without appropriate accreditation as a mediator must complete and pass MC615, the first module on offer each year. Students complete nine modules in total over two academic years.
While every attempt will be made to keep to dates advertised it is important to note that all dates are provisional and will be confirmed upon commencement of the programme.

Career Options

Graduates are provided with the knowledge base for practice in the specialist areas of mediation and many other conflict intervention systems taught on the course. Graduates who have completed module MC615 and passed the competency assessment may apply to register with the Mediators Institute of Ireland (MII) and advertise their practice as a certified mediator. On completion of supervised cases, graduates may apply for assessment to the advanced level of Practitioner Member with the MII. Graduates may incorporate their learning into their current employment or the development of their future career. Others may choose self-employment offering a variety of services including mediation, conflict analysis, conflict management, facilitation and other conflict interventions to prospective clients. The Assessment Only route to QTS is a means to formal qualification for experienced but unqualified teachers on the basis of their significant experience in schools. At the University of Greenwich we currently offer this programme for experienced teachers of Science, Maths, Modern Languages, PE, Dance and Music in secondary schools. We consider applications from teachers who are already employed and established in schools in London and the South East. For this programme relevant teaching experience involves being responsible for planning, teaching and assessment of classes of, typically, 20 pupils or more.

It is important to stress that the AO route does not include any training element and therefore is not a substitute for more extensive initial teacher training routes such as PGCE and School Direct. Successful applicants are putting themselves forward to be assessed against the Teachers' Standards on the basis of experience supported by appropriate evidence.

The aims of the programme are:

- To develop a plan and portfolio of evidence
- To complete in-school observation of teaching by university tutor/senior leaders in school
- To achieve final assessment of evidence and teaching against teachers' standards.

The University of Brighton is one of the UK's largest teacher training universities, rated ‘outstanding’ in our last Ofsted inspection.

This course leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for the 11–16 age range which enables you to be employed as a qualified teacher in secondary schools in England and Wales. The course also offers enrichment opportunities to teach the 16–18 age phase.

You'll experience practical and theoretical modules that are based upon research-informed practice by the route leader, Dr Gary Stidder, who is an established academic and active researcher in the field of physical education.

Our course focuses on an alternative approach to teaching physical education, emphasising physical activities and non-traditional team games alongside the usual competitive team games. It also includes lifestyle activities that have a wide appeal to a broad population of pupils.

You will have access to excellent resources and gain 120 days of practical experience in two of around 250 schools with whom we have partnerships.

Course structure

All teaching takes place at the School of Sport and Service Management, based in Eastbourne, where there are extensive sports facilities such as six badminton court-sized sports halls, two gymnasiums, plus a fitness suite, Astro turf pitch and swimming pool.

When studying with us at the university, you’ll experience and learn how to teach practical physical education through The A-list of physical activities. These include physical activities considered to be less conventional compared to more established types of activities. The A-list includes the following non-conventional physical activities:

Alternative
Adapted
Artistic
Aesthetic
Aquatic
Athletic
Adventurous
Aerobic
Anaerobic

Areas of study

This course covers the national curriculum range of content for physical education.

The course also includes health-related exercise, the use of new and emerging technologies in physical education, thematic teaching and learning in physical education, inclusive practice in physical education and the teaching of accredited courses in physical education.

There are four strands to this course: subject study/subject education, education studies, school placements and professional development.

Course content is kept up to date with changes in local and national initiatives and legislation, so you can be confident that your working knowledge is based on current theory and practice.

The education studies strand gives you a thorough understanding of the learning process itself, including an appreciation of individual differences. The study of the principles and practices of learning and teaching is through both school and university settings, allowing you to develop practical competency supported by analytical skills. By the end of the course you will:

• refine your understanding of pedagogy, including an appreciation of current and emerging educational theories and debate
• understand how to use and adapt teaching, learning, management and assessment strategies in order to meet the varying needs of learners
• understand how the progress and wellbeing of learners is affected by different influences and know how to take account of the principles of equality, inclusion and diversity.

The subject study/subject education strand builds upon your existing expertise in your specialist subject and provides you with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the subject in the secondary school context. You will consider the learning and teaching strategies that are relevant to physical educaiton.

The subject education module is specifically related to teaching PE in school, while the subject study module enables you to take your subject specialist studies to an increased depth. You can earn 20 masters-level credits through the assessment for the subject study module.

Professional development is linked to all strands of the programme and is designed to enable you to evaluate critically and reflect on your learning to make improvements. You will be expected to gather and justify evidence of your achievements on a regular basis and develop and implement improvement plans.

Students use an e-portfolio to record their achievements and this is reviewed throughout the course. An action plan is used to support professional development during placements and makes up a significant part of the improvement planning process.

At the end of the course, the e-portfolio provides evidence that you have met the Teachers’ Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

Placements

Ofsted identify our approach to training in schools as a key strength of this course, with an excellent balance between university tuition and school-based training.

You will spend a minimum of 120 days on school-based activities, with your training shared between the university and the partner school.

Your school-based training will include observing teachers, working with individual pupils and groups of pupils, team teaching and independent teaching. Your training will also entail completing specific subject tasks and developing your knowledge of school policy and effective practices.

You will maintain a professional training portfolio and be supported to review your work critically and analytically as well as to set appropriately challenging targets. We will also develop an action plan with you to identify strengths, development needs and actions, so that your practice is continually developing. Please visit the website to find out more about the placements:

School Direct

School Direct is an alternative route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the University of Brighton is working with a number of schools to deliver this programme across a range of secondary subjects as well as in the primary phase.

To train as a teacher through the School Direct programme you need to apply directly to a school for a School Direct training place, with schools advertising their vacancies on the UCAS Teacher Training website. The University of Brighton supports School Direct through providing training and assessment opportunities at the request of participating schools.
