By studying this course, you will develop your clinical and theoretical knowledge in compassion focused therapy. You'll have the opportunity to network with likeminded, dynamic individuals and be taught by leading academics and professionals in your field of expertise. There is also the opportunity for you to experience expert clinical and academic supervision to develop your practical skills and ensure you can provide proficient therapy to your future clients.

Throughout this course you will learn to focus on the forms and functions of shame and self-criticism and how to treat them by developing self and other directed compassion. Compassion focused therapy aims to develop care and affiliative-focused motivation, attention, emotion behaviour and thinking in clients, and the key skills that are used include Socratic questioning, guided discovery behaviour experiments and multiple chair work. You will also look at the use of compassion focused imagery during this course, which includes building the compassionate self and using the sense of a compassionate self to engage with areas of personal difficulty.

You will study this course for 36 weeks based on studying for one day a week. You will learn through a combination of e-learning, personal study, workshops and case provision where you will need to identify suitable clients to work with. This course is an exciting development that will provide students with a level of knowledge and skills in counselling which will equip them to develop as counsellors, and once they have gained further experience and client hours will open up a range of professional opportunities. For students with a first degree in psychology (which is Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) accredited) further postgraduate training opportunities will include doctoral training on British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited courses in Counselling Psychology.

The course will also provide students with a range of skills that will be highly relevant to those wishing to undertake further training in a range of related careers and specialisms. Schedule

Formal teaching takes place on one full day per week in the first year and one full day approximately every other week in the second year for part-time students; and on one to two full days per week for full-time students. In addition, there is a three day taught intensive session for all students three times per year (first year only). In addition to this, students will be expected to attend one-to-one tutorials at least twice per trimester.

There is a minimum 80% attendance requirement across each element of the course.

Facilities and Special Features

It is important that those attending this course are prepared to carry out a placement when they will be working with clients. Therefore, individuals on this course will need a high level of critical self-awareness and a willingness to reflect on their own process.

On-course requirements

To count towards a professional body accreditation, such as UKCP or BACP, the course requires students to undertake a supervised placement practice of a minimum of 100 hours plus supervision and a minimum 40 hours of personal therapy with an approved and registered or accredited counsellor or therapist. A student membership of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) is advised and professional indemnity insurance and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required. All of these requirements involve additional costs of top of the course fee.

Careers

The career opportunities for counsellors are many. For example, students may wish to work within NHS settings or schools, or further or higher educational counselling settings. Various opportunities are available within organisational settings and police settings, as well as in continuing professional development (CPD) work. The government agenda for Improved Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) offers good opportunity for trained counsellors. There are also many other establishments that have some paid positions.

Our MSc Health Psychology programme will equip you with a sound knowledge of theories and practical issues relevant to health psychology.

You will consider the psychological and physiological responses of the individual to ill health, as well as the social and community contexts of health-related behaviours and healthcare systems.

The Master of Fine Art (MFA) programme caters for students who wish to develop their professional practice or knowledge within the discipline of Fine Art. The Master of Design (MDes) programme caters for students who wish to develop their professional practice or knowledge within the discipline of Design. Typically this might include teachers, practicing designers, design consultants, project co-ordinators, or recent graduates in Design who wish to further their professional practice.

The MDes is designed to respond to students who already have a practice and who are able to readily determine where they are in relation to a field and its histories of practices and ways of working. It is the role of the MDes to work outwards, as it were, towards a context for the students practice.

All full-time Visual Arts students are provided with a large individual workspace in the Edward James Studios. In addition to specialist spaces dedicated to Painting and Drawing, Sculpture and Tapestry and Textile-based work, the studios also include Seminar Room, a materials and tool store, a small photographic darkroom, bookable exhibition and research spaces, plus an IT suite with digital editing software. A self-contained Print Room offers specialist facilities for etching, aquatint, monoprinting, woodblock and linocut. Students can work on a large-scale in the Sculpture Courtyard, which is also suitable for work in stone carving.

Students are encouraged to collaborate with other College departments - particularly the full-time programmes in the School of Conservation - making the most of the wide range of specialist knowledge, materials and equipment that is available. The Short Course programme also allows students to access a wide range of visiting tutors and specialist techniques that can further enhance their studies.

West Dean House and Estate offers students access to ambitious exhibition opportunities and unique research material. Practice placements may involve voluntary counselling agencies; counselling services in colleges, hospitals or workplaces or those attached to a GP surgery. You will need to find your own placements, with assistance from course tutors and will also need to access and fund appropriate supervision for this phase of your course.

Completion of year two is equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy which will enable you to practice as a qualified counsellor, working with clients aged 16 and over, subject to BACP approval.

In year three independent study takes over as you embark on ethical, reliable and valid independent research for your 60 credit dissertation. Four days of timetabled sessions introduce this phase of the course and include research ethics and methodology.

During your studies you will also have to attend and fund a minimum of 12 hours of personal therapy.

Flexible study routes

The MBA with a specialism in Leadership Studies can be taken as part of the Flexible Learning route. It’s designed to fit with your demanding work responsibilities.

Usually, you'll take the course part-time on a modular basis over three years but it can also be taken from between two years and six years.

Based on the core curriculum of the Strathclyde MBA, the programme uses a combination of formal courses, self-study through supported distance learning, practical training and project work.

Entry requirements

Our selection process is designed to identify talented professionals from a wide range of academic, business and cultural backgrounds.

While there are formal requirements for entry listed below, we take into consideration:

- your interpersonal and team working qualities
- the range and nature of your managerial experience

In order to assess these skills we ask you to complete a number of essays outlining your experience and aspirations alongside references supporting your work experience and academic record.

We may ask you to undertake a formal interview to discuss your achievements and aspirations. We would encourage you to visit the school or centre you’re applying to and to ask as many questions as you need to clarify your decision.

Qualifications & experience

For entry to the MBA with a specialism in leadership studies programme you must:
- hold a degree from a UK university, or equivalent academic qualification from a comparable non-UK institution. If you studied for your undergraduate degree at a non-UK institution we will need a copy of your degree transcript. Professional qualifications will also be considered.
- be at least 28 years of age.
- have a minimum of three years' full-time postgraduate experience where the management of people and resources has played a significant role.

Admissions testing

Although the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is not a standard requirement of our admissions process, strong verbal reasoning and numerical abilities are critical for the MBA and we may ask you to undertake such a test.

Competence in English

The MBA programme is highly interactive and requires a high level of competence in English speaking, writing, reading and understanding.
A minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS is required for applicants whose first language is not English. We may consider applicants who fall slightly below these standards if they're willing to undertake pre-sessional study.

Computer competence

In order to undertake the Diploma/MBA you need to be competent in word processing, the use of spreadsheets and in report writing.

Learning & teaching

A mix of teaching and learning methods are used. There is distance learning via texts, case studies, exercises and tutor support. There's also residential days at the Leadership Trust Foundation and intensive seminars at Strathclyde Business School.
The whole programme requires about 1,800 hours of course and workshop attendance, private study and project work over three years. You should allow five to ten hours a week for private study.

Module Details

This part-time, work-based course allows you to fit studying easily with work and other commitments. It is also suitable for in-company delivery.

Teaching is delivered in one mid-week teaching block from Tuesday to Friday, after which there will be a period of self-study so that you can do research and prepare your research proposal and dissertation.

The learning element of the course focuses on research management and research methods. This will prepare you to complete a dissertation, but will also cover the nature of knowledge, the evaluation of information and managing a research project. It involves numerical and word-based analysis techniques.

The supported self-study element of this award is a 13,000-word dissertation on a sales management topic, which you may opt to produce alongside an in-company change project, such as auditing a strategic account management programme, sales employee retention programme, improving sales forecasting, or redesigning trade retail outlets.

The dissertation focuses on the collection, analysis and interpretation of both academic and commercial information. It is designed to provide you with an opportunity to apply research techniques for the planning, implementation and presentation of your dissertation. It enables you to demonstrate mastery of a sales management topic by examining both theory and application using primary and secondary data sources.

Programme Assessment

During this final stage of the programme, teaching is delivered solely through lectures and syndicate discussions. We will encourage you to explore your own life and work experiences in order to provide a context for your final self-study dissertation. This approach to learning and development brings real and often immediate benefits to you and your employer.

Assessment is through a research proposal and dissertation on an agreed topic of specific interest to you or your employer.

ACADEMICS

Several high-profile guest lecturers have assisted with the delivery of some of the modules. CES modules make maximum use of guest lecturers, drawing on the practical skills and experience of key experts from government and industry to complement the theoretical components of the modules offered.

For example, Jonathon Porritt, former chairman of the Sustainable Development Commission, gives a guest lecture on the Sustainable Development Applications module, analysing the standing of sustainable development in business and policy making.

The extensive expertise of CES academics and researchers is also drawn upon in modules. Professor Tim Jackson, advisor to the government and international bodies and author of the seminal book, Prosperity without Growth – economics for a finite planet–also lectures on some CES modules.

INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT

Full-time students are able to undertake an industrial placement module which enables them to spend six to twelve weeks working for a company or NGO, doing the type of work they will aim to find on graduation.

Other graduates use the research skills they developed to go on and do PhDs.
