The Bordeaux Biology Agrosciences (B2AS) program offers an integrated multidisciplinary approach that is adapted to the realities of research (background research) as well as to the socio-economic sector (professional courses). The program objectives are to train and equip researchers and professionals to face the issues posed by agriculture in the 21st century. This is achived by integrating plant biotechnology and agrofood technology within course content in order to deal with the challenges of innovation in agriculture.

With such an integrated approach, the Master B2AS represents a meeting point between academia and professionals. During the program, students may specialize either in the field of plant biology, biotechnology, plant breeding, genetics, plant and human health benefits, food production and innovation. The wide partner network provides students with a range of complementary expertise. This means that specific competencies are developed within the chosen field of biotechnology and plant breeding for agriculture improvements.

Program structure

Semester 1:

Scientific English (3 ECTS)

  • Students will reinforce and develop the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills relevant to a biological science research context.
  • Students will acquire knowledge of the linguistic and discursive features of both written and spoken scientific English.
  • Structure and rhetoric of the research article, writing up an abstract. Oral scientific presentation – students prepare a mini-symposium on the topic related to their future work placement (and thus complete relevant bibliographical and reading research in preparation).
  • Students are evaluated on their communication skills in English and also on their ability to manage complex scientific concepts in English.

Plant development and reproduction (3 ECTS)

  • Genetic regulation of root and stem apical meristem functioning, epigenetic regulations of plant development and reproduction, parental imprinting, plant hormones, fruit and seed development, sex determination in plants, cellular mechanisms involved in plant organ growth and development.

Metabolism and cellular compartmentation (3 ECTS)

  • Metabolism and cell compartmentation: morphodynamic organization of the plant secretory pathway, lipid and protein machineries; membrane transporters in plants and the related methods of study; lipid signaling in plant cells; formation and dynamics of membrane domains; regulation of metabolism and gene expression by sugars in plants. Nature and importance of futile cycles in plants.

Biotechonology (3 ECTS)

  • In vitro culture and applications, plant transformation and applications to crop plants, GMO legislation and traceability, metabolic engineering, GMO and production of antibodies and of molecules of high health value, GMO in the food industry, fungi biotechnology.

Plant pathogen interactions (3 ECTS)

  • Plant-Mollicutes interactions, plant-virus interactions: analysis of plant and virus factors necessary for virus cycle, viroids; RNA interference, plant defence mechanisms against pathogens (fungi, bacteria and virus), breeding of plants resistant to pathogens, biodiversity of plant pathogens, epidemiology of plant pathogen interactions and impact on crop production.

Plant breeding (3 ECTS)

  • Principles of selection and genetic gain, response to selection, germplasm resources, collecting, analysing, classifying, international rules on germplasm resources. Population improvement and cultivar development (breeding for lines, hybrids, clones, populations), high throughput phenotyping, breeding strategies and methods including molecular breeding (MAS, genomic selection) and biotechnologies, multiple traits selection, genotype by environment interaction, protecting varieties and intellectual property, plant breeding international network and organization.

Quantitative and population genetics and evolution (3 ECTS)

  • Population genetics and genetic diversity, haplotype structure, domestication and genetic consequences, linkage disequilibrium, genetic variance, estimating variance components, heritability, genetic correlations, association genetics, genomic selection, induced diversity TILLinG, natural diversity ecoTILLinG, linking genetics, genomics and bioinformatics : from fine- mapping to gene cloning; genotyping by sequencing.

Semester 2:

Laboratory Practice (6 months/30 ECTS) 

  • In a public laboratory and/or a private company laboratory.

Swansea University Medical School's Graduate Entry Medicine Programme (MBBCh) is unique in Wales, and one of a small group of similar programmes of medical study in the UK. Our MBBCh degree is an innovative, 4-year accelerated medical degree open to graduates of any discipline.

The curriculum has been structured to reflect the way in which clinicians approach patients and how patients present to doctors.

Key Features of Graduate Entry Medicine Programme

The Graduate Entry Medicine Programme is a fully independent four-year programme based primarily in Swansea and west Wales, although students may undergo placements in other parts of Wales if they wish. We have designed an integrated medical curriculum, where the basic biomedical sciences are learnt in the context of clinical medicine, public health, pathology, therapeutics, ethics and psycho-social issues in patient management. This, together with a high emphasis on clinical and communication skills, will provide you with everything you'll need to practise medicine competently and confidently.

The curriculum of the Graduate Entry Medicine programme, with its learning weeks and clinical placements, is intentionally not structured in a conventional ‘body systems’ approach but is designed to reflect the way in which clinicians approach patients and how patients present to doctors.

This innovative approach will help you to develop a way of thinking and of engaging with information that mimics that used in clinical practice. As you work your way through learning weeks, clinical placements and practical sessions, you will acquire knowledge and build up your repertoire of clinical understanding and skills. Themes and strands, which run longitudinally throughout the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme, will help you make links with other aspects you are learning, and with things you have previously considered as well as how all this relates to clinical practice.

Course Structure

The Graduate Entry Medicine Programme consists of Phase I (Years 1 + 2) and Phase II (Years 3 + 4). Each year is mapped onto GMC Tomorrow’s Doctors 2009 (TD09), where 3 Modules – Scholar and Scientist, Practitioner and Professional, reflect the TD09 outcome areas.

The Graduate Entry Medicine programme involves a spiral, integrated curriculum structured around 6 body system ‘Themes’ - Behaviour, Defence, Development, Movement, Nutrition and Transport - with 96 clinical cases presented in 70 ‘learning weeks’ (65 in Phase I and 5 in Phase II).

There is a high level of clinical contact:

- 39 weeks Clinical Apprenticeships
- 35 weeks Specialty Attachments
- 11 weeks Community Based Learning
- 6 weeks Elective, 6 weeks Shadowing

GAMSAT

GAMSAT is a professionally designed and marked selection test for medical schools offering graduate-entry programmes open to graduates of any discipline. You will need to sit GAMSAT if you intend to apply for entry to the GEM Programme here in Swansea. There are no exemptions from the GAMSAT test.

GAMSAT evaluates the nature and extent of abilities and skills gained through prior experience and learning, including the mastery and use of concepts in basic science, as well as the acquisition of more general skills in problem solving, critical thinking and writing.

How we decide

Applicants, who meet the minimum entry requirements are ranked based upon their GAMSAT scores. The applicants who have scored most highly are then invited to attend the Selection Centre at the Medical School in the Spring. Please note that all candidates must attend in person and that we do not have the capacity to offer remote interviews, for example via Skype.

We will attempt to inform all applicants whether they have been successful. All candidates who are successful in gaining an interview will also be invited to attend a Visit Day at the University's Singleton Campus.

Format of the Selection Centre

After an introduction and a “setting the scene” session, you will be asked to sit a written assessment of 30 minutes duration. This situational judgement test is not designed to assess your academic ability, but to try and identify those applicants whose personal and academic qualities are suitable to a career in medicine.

Following the written assessment, you will have a tour of the university. You will learn more about the course and see life here at Swansea through the eyes of a medical student. It is not just about Swansea deciding if you are right for our course, but also the opportunity for you to see if Swansea is right for YOU.

After lunch, you will then be invited to attend two separate interviews, each of 20 minutes duration. They are conducted by pairs of trained interviewers taken from our highly trained panel of clinicians, academics, medical students and members of the public (lay) interviewers. Your personal statement will be considered and discussed during your interview.

The interview process is designed to take account of the personal and academic qualities needed as a doctor, as set out in ‘Good Medical Practice’, and the capacity to meet the outcomes of ‘Tomorrows Doctors’. In summary these are:

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You must have a good degree (minimum 2:2 but 2:1 or 1st preferred) from a UK higher education institution or equivalent in Art and Design or an art-related subject. You must also have a GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in both English language and mathematics prior to application.

Pre-Interview School Experience

There is an expectation that you will have had some general experience of working with secondary age students in a school setting. In preparation for the selection interview you are required to engage in a teaching episode, observed by an experienced qualified teacher. It will support your application to undertake this teaching episode prior to application and in advance of your interview.

Selection Interview

At interview you will also need to present a portfolio of personal work which should include a selection of work completed before, during and after your degree.

The selection interview will assess your subject knowledge and personal qualities such as the potential to relate well to secondary age students, enthusiasm, sensitivity, communication skills and robustness and resilience for teaching. You will also take a written test to assess your standard of English.

In addition applicants must meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership requirements for Initial Teacher Training, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

In each semester you’ll study a range of modules that develop your knowledge of key aspects of organizational psychology.

You’ll be introduced to the individual, team and organisational factors that affect workplace behaviours such as decision-making and teamwork. You’ll explore the selection and training methods use by organisations to recruit, develop and retain talent and the design of complex human-technical systems.

From there you’ll study contemporary business priorities such as organisational development and change, as well as approaches to career development and performance management. The Cambridge MCL is a one-year taught masters programme commencing at the beginning of October each year and ending in June of the following year. It is designed for students wanting to pursue further legal studies after completing their first degree in law, both those intending to practise in the area of corporate law and those considering an academic career. The MCL has been structured so as to combine academic rigour with a diverse and flexible curriculum, enabling each student to tailor their MCL course selection to their own specific requirements.

MCL students take a combination of full-year and one-term modules during the course. All students take the compulsory full-year Deals course, which focuses on the legal and economic structuring of corporate transactions. They also choose one full-year LLM paper from a selection of corporate papers, including Corporate Finance and Corporate Governance. In conjunction with the full-year papers, students take four one- term modules, usually two in the Michaelmas Term and two in the Lent Term. The modules enable students to conduct a more detailed study of certain specialist areas of corporate law, such as shareholder litigation and international merger control.

Course detail

MCL students are expected upon arrival to be familiar with corporate law and to be motivated to develop their expertise in this challenging area. Students who take the MCL should leave with a much enriched understanding of the topic. They will learn about areas of corporate law with which they were not previously familiar, will have an opportunity to reflect upon the theoretical and policy implications of the topic and will be challenged to think about the practical aspects of the subject in an academically rigorous manner.

Format

MCL students take the compulsory full-year Deals course and a full-year LLM paper from a selection of corporate papers. In addition they take four one-term MCL-specific modules from a selection of six on offer, usually two in the first term and two in the second term of the course.

Given that MCL enrolment is limited to 25 students, class sizes for the modules and the Deals course are small enough to mean seminar-style teaching occurs in classes formally organised as lectures.

MCL students receive one two-hour formal lecture per week for each of their four termly modules, for the full-year Deals course and for their full-year LLM course.

MCL students receive small group teaching for their full-year LLM paper alongside the LLM students taking the same paper if numbers are sufficiently large.

MCL students are entitled to submit up to three pieces of practice written work for the full-year LLM paper they take. This work might take the form of reflective essays or timed exam-practice essays. Course convenors and lecturers can advise on topics, but the aim is to produce a short piece of writing which provides a concise, rigorous argument or analysis of the issues in question. Students then benefit from specific and individual feedback, and can thereby hone their legal writing skills.

Assessment

- Students write three assignments during the MCL year as the formal assessment for the Deals course.

- A two-hour examination is required for each of their four termly modules, and a three-hour examination for their one full-year LLM course.

- All MCL students give a class presentation as part of a group within the Deals course. This forms part of the assessment for the Deals course, alongside students' individual written assignments.

Continuing

A number of students wish to remain in Cambridge after completing their Masters degree in order to pursue further advanced legal studies, either by undertaking research for the Diploma in International Law, the Diploma in Legal Studies, the MLitt degree or the PhD degree.

Students wishing to continue their studies at Cambridge by undertaking a research degree in law should apply for their chosen course through the Graduate Admissions Office by completing a GRADSAF application form and submitting it by the relevant deadline.

Department research and industry highlights

- TRENT is an exciting and innovative collaborative project between the British Universities Film and Video Council (BUFVC) and Royal Holloway, University of London (RHUL) and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Led by John Ellis the project brings together the nine existing online databases hosted and curated by the BUFVC which provide important film, radio and television material along with accompanying metadata and contextual information for academics, students, teachers and researchers. This project brings together all the material contained in these databases, yet Trent is not simply a master database. Instead it foregrounds creative searching through a common interactive interface using real-time ‘intelligent’ filtering to bringing disparate databases into a single search and discovery environment whilst maintaining the integrity and individual provenance of each.

- The EUscreen project is major funded EU project which aims to digitise and provide access to European’s audio-visual heritage. This innovative and ambitious three year project began in October 2009 and the project consortium is made up of 28 partners from 19 European countries and is a best practice network within the eContentplus programme of the European Commission. The Department of Media Arts at Royal Holloway’s is responsible for the content selection policy for EUscreen and those involved include John Ellis, Rob Turnock and Sian Barber.

- Video Active is a major EU-funded project aiming to create access to digitised television programme content from archives around Europe. It involves collaboration between the Department of Media Arts at Royal Holloway and Utrecht University, and eleven European archives including the BBC, to provide access to content and supporting contextual materials via a specially designed web portal. The team from the Department of Media Arts, who are John Ellis, Cathy Johnson and Rob Turnock, are responsible for developing content selection strategy and policy for the project.

- Migrant and Diasporic Cinema in Contemporary Europe is an AHRC-funded international Research Network, led by Daniela Berghahn, which brings together researchers from ten UK and European universities, filmmakers, policy makers and representatives from the cultural sector. The Research Network explores how the films of migrant and diasporic filmmakers have redefined our understanding of European identity as constructed and narrated in European cinema. The project seeks to identify the numerous ways in which multi-cultural and multi-ethnic presences and themes have revitalised contemporary European cinema by introducing an eclectic mix of non-Western traditions and new genres.

- Lina Khatib was awarded an AHRC Research Leave Grant to complete a book on the representation of Lebanese politics and society in Lebanese cinema over the last thirty years. The study focuses on cinema’s relationship with national identity in the context of the Civil War and the post-war period in Lebanon.

- Gideon Koppel was awarded an AHRC Research Leave Grant to complete his feature-length documentary portrait of a rural community in Wales, The Library Van, which has been partly funded by the Arts Council of Wales.

Course content and structure

You will study three core units during the year.

Core course units:
- From Idea to Screen
From Idea to Screen introduces the practice of documentary film making - exploring eclectic notions of the genre, from the conventional to those more associated with fine art. The course tutors also use their own work which is deconstructed across all its constituent parts idea, conception, pre-production planning, and research, shooting and post-production. Ideas to Screen will explore ways of translating observations and ideas into imagery – both visual and aural. There will be an emphasis on experimental forms of narrative – at time crossing the boundaries between fine art and documentary. For the final and assessed project in this unit, each student will be asked make a video ‘portrait’ of a character.

- Foundations of Production
Contemporary documentary production requires managerial and business skills as well as creative ones. This unit will instruct you in the industrial skills required for the production of video, television and multimedia documentary. These include researching the market, writing proposals, acquiring funding for development and production, drafting contracts, drawing up budgets, copyright clearance, and marketing.

- Major Documentary Production – Dissertation
Developing out of study, research and practice from previous units, you will direct and produce a substantial documentary production. This is the largest assignment in the course and is appropriately weighted. The unit is tutorial based.

On completion of the course graduates will have:

- gained invaluable experience of both authored and commercial documentary production

- the ability to develop their own ideas, preparing them for the documentary industry but also finding ways to reinvent it

- an understanding of documentary film genre and its changing boundaries as well as the changing technologies and their impact on the genre

- an advanced understanding of the processes of making a documentary film from initial concept to final form and the various stages of production.

- an awareness of the institutions and mechanisms of the UK film and television industry

- a critical knowledge of the current and changing platforms for documentary film, from cinema to television and the internet.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods including project work, photo essays and written production papers.

Our graduate students have won and been nominated for many awards including, The One World Broadcasting Trust Award and The Jerwood First Cuts Documentary. In 2009 two of our students, Aashish Gadhvi and Michael Watts won the One World Student Documentary Fund which funds challenging international documentary projects.

Syed Atef Amjad Ali has recently had his film The Red Mosque previewed at The Amsterdam International Documentary Festival. The Red Mosque was made with production funds Syed received from The Jan Virijman Fund and also from the One World-Broadcasting Award.

Chung Yee Yu has won the Cinematography Award at Next Frame (A Touring Festival of International Student Film and Video) Chung Yee Yu has also won the Silver Award of Open Category of IFVA (The Hong Kong Independent Short Film & Video Awards)

Recent graduate Suzanne Cohen has just has her work selected for the BBC’s Film Network website; an interactive showcase for ‘new British filmmakers, screening three new short films in broadband quality every week, adding to a growing catalogue of great shorts’.

MSc Dissertation Workshop (Semester 2)

The program follows the European “Design Science” approach: using Information Systems technology to actively improve the way companies conduct their business. Students learn to use modern information technologies to shape business processes according to IT’s potential and to optimize business information systems to meet business demands.The curriculum allows students to individualize their studies, and encourages them to reflect on what they have learned in a holistic context. Working independently and accepting responsibility for their work are additional important skills.

The Master in Information Systems was designed together with a board of leading Austrian stakeholders from industry and government to meet today's challenges and to give a solid basis for tomorrow's demands. As a student at City, you will combine theoretical study with clinical experience, working with London's diverse population in leading hospitals and community settings. Placements

Half of your time as a student will be spent gaining practice experience through clinical placements and simulated practice. Placements are a vital factor in promoting understanding and development of professional skills. They help you become fit for practice, fit for purpose and fit for award by the time you complete your programme.

Each placement provides you with educational opportunities to develop your professional skills and allows students to explore the journeys of service users including older people, the severely ill, those in recovery and those detained in secure (forensic) settings. The majority of placements are with the East London NHS Foundation Trust which includes the boroughs of Newham, City & Hackney and Tower Hamlets. There are also opportunities for a 2 week elective placement outside the Trust.

Support in Practice

Students are supported in practice by practice experience staff who liaise between the Institution and the Trust, Mentors and Link Lecturers. At City we also use an innovative method of group work to support students and help them to develop the ability to understand and process the emotional impact of working in mental health.

Academic facilities

Our specialist Clinical Skills Centre at City’s Northampton Square campus has been specially designed for teaching and reflects clinical environments and working wards, so you can familiarise yourself with equipment and practices before commencing your placement. Simulated practice enables you to practise your skills in a safe environment, in preparation for transferring these skills to a 'real life' setting.

Teaching and learning

The teaching on the Mental Health Nursing course includes lecture sessions, workshops, small group activities and discussions and whole class discussion.

We are also using an innovative method of group work to support students and help them to develop the ability to understand and process the emotional impact of working in mental health.

Assessment

Assessments are varied to meet the practice and academic challenges of the Postgraduate Diploma, while recognising the need for motivating, realistic and relevant activity. The practice element is assessed by the development of a record of achievement in practice and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations. Modules are also assessed through essays or seminars.

Modules

Your learning will draw on areas including nursing, psychology, sociology and biology in order for you to develop your communication and evidence based clinical skills.

Career prospects

On successful graduation you will gain registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which provides an internationally-recognised professional qualification enabling you to practice in the UK and overseas. Some countries require additional local registration.

Nursing is a life-long career where you can develop your skills and interests within a range of specialisms and career paths. As well as a career as a mental health nurse, you can move into areas within the health and social care sector including advising on policy and quality of care and academic teaching and research. You will also be able to go onto further study at MSc level, including an MSc Advanced Practice degree at City.

The focus of this course is using mathematics to solve real world problems, such as in finance, energy, engineering or scientific research. The combination of the applied nature of the mathematics that is taught, with the masters level of this course, makes this qualification highly attractive to employers.

Why study Applied Mathematics at Dundee?

Many of the topics taught are directly linked to the research that we do, so you will be learning at the cutting edge of applied mathematics.

We are a relatively small division and operate with an excellent staff/student ratio. One advantage of this is that we can get to know each student personally, and so can offer a friendly and supportive learning experience. Staff are ready and willing to help at all levels, and in addition, our Student-Staff Committee meets regularly to discuss matters of importance to our students.

We also offer students the chance to choose a selection of modules from other subject areas such as economics and finance.

Specialist software:
We have a wide selection of mathematical software packages such as MATLAB, Maple and COMSOL, which are used throughout the course.

Individual reading and study takes a particularly important role in the Summer project. For the project, you will be guided to prepare your research project plan and to develop skills and competence in research including project management, critical thinking and problem solving, project reporting and presentation.

This stimulating and demanding 36-week training programme will provide you with the skills and experience you need to teach Physics across the full 11-18 secondary age range, with complementary courses in Chemistry and Biology.

You will learn to make your knowledge accessible and interesting to students by implementing a range of teaching approaches and techniques for managing activities in the classroom.

The PGCE Secondary programme refreshes and extends students’ subject knowledge and provides them with the opportunity to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and make a difference to young people’s lives and ambitions.

The programme is divided into university and school/college-based sections. The 12-week university-based section is taught by highly respected staff with extensive experience of secondary school provision.

Our tutors will introduce students to various aspects of teaching, including lesson planning, resource preparation and selection, teaching approaches for examination courses, class management and control, and assessment of attainment.

Trainees will spend the other 24 weeks gaining Professional Teaching Experience (PTE) on two placements at our established partner schools/colleges located across the South Wales region from Pembrokeshire to Monmouthshire. On both these placements, an experienced teacher will act as mentor and will keep in close contact with university tutors to ensure the smooth development of the trainee’s teaching competences. Placements will be available in either English or Welsh-medium secondary schools.

The programme involves four written assignments, while the PTE will be assessed through teaching observations by both experienced placement mentors and university tutors against the QTS.

Entry Criteria

You will be expected to hold a good honours degree (2:2minimum) and be a graduat of a university, polytechnic or college of higher education approved by the University of Wales. If you wish to teach in Secondary schools then your degree should be closely linked to the subject that you wish to teach.

For the September 2015 entry all PGCE applicants in Wales will need a B grade at GCSE in English and Mathematics and if you intend to follow your course through the medium of Welsh, a C grade in Welsh.

If you hold a C grade in GCSE English Language or Mathematics and are successful in other aspects of the selection process you will be given the opportunity to sit an equivalency test. If you are successful and you accept your place to study with us then you can start your programme as planned. Attendance at the workshops prior to the test is a compulsory part of the equivalency testing programme.

What are GCSE Equivalency Tests?

Successful completion of a GCSE equivalency test will enable you to proceed on to a PGCE course if you do not hold a GCSE B grade in English or Maths, the test is only available to students that have gained a grade C at GCSE level.

If you hold a C grade in GCSE English Language or Mathematics and are successful in other aspects of the selection process you will be given the opportunity to sit an equivalency test. If you successfully complete your equivalency test and you accept your place to study with SWWCTE then you can start your PGCE programme as planned.

Will I get any support before the test?

Yes. You are required to attend a one day workshop which is designed to help prepare you for the test with face-to-face support. On the day of your test you will also attend a half day workshop in the morning.
