This Postgraduate Certificate programme develops students' knowledge and skills, theoretical and practical competencies in the fast-developing world of sedation and pain management, and is studied part-time over one year. Simulation training in management of medical emergencies is an important component of the programme. It is compliant with UK sedation guidelines.

About this degree

Alongside theoretical training, the programme provides clinical attachments with a programme mentor at accredited sedation clinics in or near London. Students receive training in pre-sedation assessment and how to administer sedation to patients using standard sedation techniques, and observe the criteria set for recovery and discharge of patients after sedation. Students also receive simulation training in the management of medical emergencies during sedation.

Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules worth 15 credits each.

Dissertation/report

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through lectures, clinical skills seminars, problem-based learning and directly supervised clinical sessions sedating patients. Students also receive simulation training in the management of medical emergencies.

Dental anxiety and phobia are significant problems for many of our patients. Learning the tools that can be used to effectively manage these patients will allow you to broaden your clinical practice and increase the access to dental care for these patients.

Conscious sedation is a safe and effective way of facilitating routine and more complex dental care in patients who would otherwise not be able to have treatment done, including children and adolescents. You will also have the opportunity to explore other non-pharmacological techniques that can be used to effectively manage anxious patients in your daily practice.

Who is it for?

The programme has been designed for dental practitioners either in primary or secondary care who wish to introduce this invaluable skill into their practice or formalise their existing training and experience.

This 60 credit programme is split into five courses. As conscious sedation is a practical skill, the programme has both online courses and a clinical course.

Online courses

The majority of the courses are delivered online to allow you to study the theory behind successful conscious sedation at a time and place most convenient for you. There are four 10 credit courses that each run over a period of five weeks.

  • Course 1: Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Pain and Local Anaesthetic (APPPL)

Explore the relevant basic science that underpins practice in conscious sedation and the successful use of local anaesthetic in dentistry.

  • Course 2: Dental Anxiety

Examine a range of non-pharmacological techniques that can be utilised to manage an anxious patient and the importance of effective communication.

  • Course 3: Assessment of the Dental Sedation Patient

Explore the issues which relate to the suitability of a patient for dental-led conscious sedation and interpret the relevant clinical parameters.

  • Course 4: Sedation Techniques

Examine the current knowledge and practice within conscious sedation in dentistry, including more advanced techniques.

Clinical Course

The clinical course is a 20 credit course which runs alongside the online courses in the form of clinical practice days hosted at the Edinburgh Dental Institute. The first clinical practice day is in September and these run once a month until the following August.

The first clinical practice day is an Induction Day, and will include an introduction to the course, academic skills such as using the library, occupational health clearance and the required health and safety induction.

The second clinical practice day will cover medical emergencies in sedation practice and communication skills.

From the third clinical practice day you will start to provide the sedation for patients on the oral surgery clinic, and this will continue for the remainder of your clinical sessions. You will also have the opportunity to provide inhalational sedation.

Applicants should be aware that there is notable time commitment not only to the clinical days which are once a month hosted at the Edinburgh Dental Institute, but also to the online learning material and tasks which are estimated to take at least 10 hours per week. Participation in online discussion boards and journal club is expected on a weekly basis. Students are also strongly encouraged to maintain a reflective personal journal of their clinical experience alongside a sedation logbook as they progress through the programme.

Learning and Teaching

The online courses of the programme are delivered on the virtual learning environment or VLE, which aims to provides a dynamic and collaborative learning experience using a variety of online learning methods such as discussion forums, an online journal club and clinical case studies. The online community will also be supported by the clinical practice days where you will have the opportunity to meet your fellow students and tutors.

Assessment

To achieve the credits of the online courses you will be assessed on academic assignments such as a literature review or reflective essay. You will be supported in writing academically with advice given on searching the literature, examples of good academic and reflective writing and the opportunity for formative feedback on drafts before final submission. Two of the more clinically focussed online courses will be assessed through short written examinations consisting of single best answer and situational judgement test questions. Again, throughout these courses formative feedback will be given with the opportunity to practice these styles of question.

The clinical course will be assessed by submission of a clinical case presentation of a case treated on the programme alongside regular clinical assessment through the use of workplace based assessments. The student will submit four workplace based assessments to contribute to their final mark for the course.

You will study applied basic sciences, conscious sedation, inhalation/intravenous sedation techniques and management of possible complications. The programme is based on self-directed learning, and you will undertake an epidemiological or case-study-based project report with a literature review, in addition to a minimum of 22 days of supervised clinical practice. There will also be an introductory full week (5 days) of lectures and practicals from 8-12 January 2018 and 2 further full study days.

Course purpose

The course is designed for dentists already engaged in the provision of sedation for dentistry, or planning to develop a service, as well as those involved in teaching conscious sedation techniques. It will provide practitioners with the knowledge and skills to use a wide range of conscious sedation techniques with confidence and safety.

Course format and assessment

Modular programme comprising 120 credits: Scientific Basis of Conscious Sedation, examined by written and MCQ examination; Clinical Conscious Sedation, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of case studies on treated and unseen patients, practical and oral examinations; submission of a literature review, with an oral defence of the literature. Attendance at Guy's Campus one day per week from January to June and seven additional study days covering the main modules.

Extra information

As we are seeking to identify your suitability for this clinical environment, we expect our interviewees to adopt the dress code required of clinical dental students at King's. Further information will be given should you choose to apply. This programme is intended for dental practitioners who want to develop competence in providing conscious sedation. The programme has been designed to allow you to gain experience of using inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide and oxygen, and midazolam. You will build your knowledge through distance learning modules and study days, while clinical skills will be developed during supervised clinical practice in Bristol. We aim to produce caring, knowledgeable and skilful practitioners who are competent in the provision of conscious sedation within the limits of the individual clinician.

Programme structure

This modular programme is divided in to three units: Local Anaesthesia, Anxiety Management and Clinical Conscious Sedation.

Local Anaesthesia
Pain and anxiety control are closely linked and treatments under sedation often need to be aborted because of inadequate local anaesthesia. The unit will update students in pharmacology and local anaesthetic techniques, introduce advanced local anaesthetic techniques and provide medical simulator training in the management of the complications of sedation.

Anxiety Management
This unit will provide students with a knowledge and critical understanding of the theoretical framework that underpins cognitive therapy, including self-help and behavioural approaches.

Clinical Conscious Sedation
This unit is designed to prepare those with no experience in conscious sedation to independent practice. It will include supervised clinical practice in Bristol, as well as distance learning and study days where practical skills will be introduced before beginning supervised clinical practice. The unit covers the syllabus on basic sedation techniques published in 2015 by the Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry.

As a dental practitioner, this course will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to use intravenous and inhalational sedation techniques on a wide range of anxious patients, including adults and children. We welcome students from all over the UK and Ireland.

The Conscious Sedation in Dentistry PGDip aims to provide you with:

-A systematic understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin conscious sedation and anxiety management in dentistry

-A comprehensive practical understanding of clinical skills in techniques of intravenous and inhalational sedation, as applicable to UK practice in dentistry

-An ability to critically evaluate the evidence-base and clinical issues involved in the safe independent practice of conscious sedation to the highest standard

Delivery

You will undertake substantive self-directed study, including:

-Two written assignments of 2,000 words each

-A 6,000 word clinical case dissertation

The Diploma is awarded after satisfactory completion of a final examination at the end of the course.

Although based at Newcastle University, teaching is provided in academic and clinical facilities throughout the northern region (Newcastle, Sunderland and Darlington).

This one year part time course consists of 10 didactic days of lectures and seminars, plus 14 half days of hands-on clinical training in sedation techniques. Didactic and clinical teaching is spaced evenly over a full academic year.

Clinical sessions are held in the Sedation Department at Newcastle Dental Hospital and in the Newcastle Community Service, which are fully equipped for all aspects of intravenous and inhalational sedation.

The School is in the same building as the Dental Hospital, adjacent to the Medical School and Royal Victoria Infirmary teaching hospital, forming one of the largest integrated teaching and hospital complexes in the country.

Applicants must possess a dental degree, which enables registration with the Dental Council in Ireland. Entry to training in conscious sedation in dentistry would normally follow a two-year period of general professional training post graduation that a student would already have undergone. Applicants must have evidence of satisfactory seroconversion for protection against Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Applicants will be requested to undergo Garda (Police) Vetting. All applicants must upload a separate statement (no more than 300 words in length) stating why they wish to undertake the Diploma.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the required proficiency for admission to this course is an IELTS (academic version) score of 7, with no individual band below 7.

Our MSc Paediatric Dentistry course will equip you with the advanced academic knowledge and clinical skills required to practice as a specialist in paediatric dentistry.

This is a full-time, three-year master's degree that combines the taught and research elements of the MSc with a mandatory clinical training unit.

You will build up your knowledge of literature in this field, learning from consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry. Taught elements are delivered in lectures, seminars, practical skills sessions and online learning.

You will develop your clinical skills at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, with general anaesthesia lists running at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Trafford General Hospital.

Clinical teaching involves close supervision of a personal cohort of patients with a broad range of paediatric dental needs, including those with dental anomalies, trauma and caries, under supervision by hospital specialists and consultants. Clinical training involves attendance at consultant new patient clinics.

Completing this course will prepare you to practice as a specialist paediatric dentist or pursue a clinical academic or research career in this field. You will be eligible to sit the Membership in Paediatric Dentistry tri-collegiate specialty membership examination upon completion of the course.

Coursework and assessment

Formal assessment for the Research Methods, Biostatistics, and Guideline Development and Implementation units will be undertaken via marked written assignments.

The CPD unit will be assessed via a combination of written and practical examinations.

For the clinical skills component, assessment is through examination of a variety of skills procedures carried out in the skills facility.

For the clinical component, case write-up and presentation, assessment is through marking of both the written component oral presentation of cases and clinical governance projects.

This course will have the majority of its clinical activity in the Paediatric Dental department in the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, with general anaesthesia lists running in the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Trafford General Hospital. Clinical teaching will be delivered by consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry.

Paediatric dentistry is a stimulating and rewarding speciality, and offers a number of career opportunities. Paediatric dentists may work in private practice, the community dental setting and in dental hospitals.

In addition to this clinical role, many paediatric dentists participate in teaching and research. These interests can be combined with part-time clinical work or undertaken on a full-time basis.

In the UK, consultants in paediatric dentistry may work in a community or hospital setting and concentrate on the management of complex, multidisciplinary cases. They also play an important role in the management of the unit in which they work.

You will observe a wide range of surgery, including facial trauma, implant and reconstructive, cancer and reconstructive, salivary gland and orthognathic surgery, as well as participating in dentoalveolar surgery.

The course also covers the design, data collection, and simple analysis and interpretation of clinical research projects, and culminates in the MSc dissertation. You will learn how to identify, formulate and implement a specific research project in line with the research themes of pain and anxiety control, surgical implantology, or oral cancer and health services research.

Aims

The course aims to provide dental practitioners with the knowledge and skills to undertake minor oral surgery in the context of a wider knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Our teaching and learning methods are designed to encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and to integrate work with formal educational activities.

We will provide the core text book for the course. This book, Master Dentistry Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Radiology, Pathology and Oral Medicine (ISBN 0443061920), has been authored by University staff Coulthard, Horner, Sloan and Theaker.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is by essay and SBAs throughout the course and related to the taught units. You will also maintain a clinical surgical logbook and undertake a clinical competency test. There is also an oral examination.

The programme aims to produce paediatric dentists who are thinkers. Proficient and confident in all areas of clinical Paediatric Dentistry, and capable of literature critique and in the conduct of scientific research. Our students will be able to use their skills and knowledge to set up paediatric dentistry services in both community and hospital settings. 

On completion of the programme the postgraduate should be able to demonstrate the following:

This is a modern course that aims to facilitate reflective learning, clinical judgements, critical analysis, evidence based practice and excellent, empathetic clinical care. The didactic course is predominantly seminar based. A tutor will facilitate the seminars but these will be student led. This means that the students will be expected to present the topic and to critically appraise the literature in the subject area, and present this both in writing and verbally. This approach supports the development of inquisitive thinking, deep learning and helps develop judgement. 

There will be a programme of lectures in selected topics. 

Year 1 students will benefit from a programme of ‘core’ lectures and seminars where they will join postgraduate students from other disciplines. 

Year 2 students will have a lecture programme focused on the management of medically compromised children and the clinical aspects of dental anomalies. 

Clinical Skills 

Students will have an average of six clinical sessions each week throughout the two year programme. Three or four of these will be for personal patient treatment. The other sessions will include trauma clinics/A&E/multidisciplinary clinics, operative treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia,and weekly consultant clinics. 

Research Project 

Students are expected to undertake a research project. This can be laboratory or clinically based. The Dissertation accounts for 33.3% of the course, it is hoped that the projects will be presented at national and international conferences and be suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Our aim is to develop you to the forefront of Paediatric Dentistry, as clinicians, teachers and future leaders. The clinical activity is predominantly based at St Thomas’ Hospital, Waterloo, with seminars and clinics at Guy’s Hospital, London Bridge and at King’s College Hospital, located in Denmark Hill.

  • Two taught modules, covering the scientific and clinical basis of Paediatric Dentistry usually assessed by written examination;
  • One clinical module, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of coursework, clinical examination, oral examination and assessed essays

Extra information

As we are seeking to identify your suitability for this clinical environment, we expect our interviewees to adopt the dress code required of clinical dental students at King's. Further information will be given should you choose to apply. Entry to the programme is strictly dependent upon occupational health clearance that you are able to conduct exposure prone procedures (EPPs) before you start clinical work. This will assess your hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C antibody status, HIV and TB status following the completion of a health questionnaire and a further health check before or at enrolment.

If offered a place on the course, overseas students are advised to be tested locally and send the results of these checks with the questionnaire, prior to a separate full test in the UK at the College's Occupational Health Department before term begins. About this degree

Year one provides students with the basic knowledge required in paediatric dentistry and teaches some of the clinical techniques needed in a laboratory setting. Year two encourages more advanced and complex treatment planning and looks at other aspects of good patient care such as clinical governance. Year three consolidates the learning to date and provides the theoretical experience required for graduates to understand, critically appraise and potentially carry out research.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme is delivered through a combination of seminars, online learning and hands-on sessions in our skills laboratory. Assessment will be through written and practical tests, logbook of patients treated in practice, case presentations, essay, and vivas throughout the programme. Contact days are as follows: Year 1 – one week in November, one week in March and an exam day in June; Year 2 – one week in November and an exam day in June; Year 3 – one week in December or January and an exam day in June.

Funding

Note on mode of study: Selecting the part-time mode allows you access to study loans, but students must complete their studies in consecutive years and may not take any time away from study without authorised Extenuating Circumstances. Those selecting the flexible mode of study cannot access loans. They are able to take a break from the end of a year of study but must complete the programme within five years.

It is not possible to transfer between modes of study so students need to select the option that suits their personal circumstances. Students will be taught together irrespective of their mode of study.

The first cohort of students on the Paediatric Dentistry MSc graduated in 2017, therefore no information on graduate destinations is currently available.  

However, destinations of recent graduates of the institute’s Paediatric Dentistry Postgraduate Certificate (which this new programme supersedes) include: specialist registrar; senior dental officer, community dentistry; and clinical lead for dental salaried services.

Employability

As well as enhancing your clinical skills, this programme also supports the development of transferable skills such as the use of electronic resources, giving presentations and academic writing.

This is the only blended learning MSc programme to provide further training in paediatric dentistry, designed to support working dentists. Learning and teaching

Our three-year MSc (Clin) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery course enables dentists to train in the specialty concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

All units are based on the speciality of oral surgery, but within the wider context of maxillofacial surgery. You will undertake minor oral surgery under supervision, carried out under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia. You will also attend theatre to assist and observe major surgery and attend consultation clinics, trauma clinics, ward rounds and carry out ward duties.

The clinical component of the course consists of units covering surgical basic sciences, reflective oral surgery practices, dental tissues, bone disease and injury, soft tissues, and salivary tissue, pain and the temporomandibular joint.

You will attend weekly interactive seminars led by senior staff and invited guest speakers. Some of these have actor patients present to allow you to rehearse your clinical skills.

If you study the full three-year MSc, you will also attend external teaching events such as residential blocks for basic science applied to surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
