This Postgraduate Certificate programme develops students’ theoretical and practical competencies in the fast-developing world of sedation and pain management, and is studied part-time over one year. It is compliant with UK sedation guidelines.

Degree information

Alongside theoretical training, the programme provides clinical attachments with a programme mentor at accredited sedation clinics in or near London. Students receive training in pre-sedation assessment and how to administer sedation to patients using standard sedation techniques, and observe the criteria set for recovery and discharge of patients after sedation. Students also receive simulation training in the management of medical emergencies during sedation.

Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits. The programme consists of four core modules worth 15 credits each. There are no optional modules for this programme.

You will study applied basic sciences, conscious sedation, inhalation/intravenous sedation techniques and management of possible complications. The programme is based on self-directed learning, research, which can be an audit, epidemiological or case-study-based project report with a literature review, in addition to a minimum of 22 days of supervised clinical practice.

This programme is intended for dental practitioners who want to develop competence in providing conscious sedation. The programme has been designed to allow you to gain experience of using inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide and oxygen, and midazolam. You will build your knowledge through distance learning modules and study days, while clinical skills will be developed during supervised clinical practice in Bristol. We aim to produce caring, knowledgeable and skilful practitioners who are competent in the provision of conscious sedation within the limits of the individual clinician.

Programme structure

This modular programme is divided in to three units: Local Anaesthesia, Anxiety Management and Clinical Conscious Sedation.

Local Anaesthesia
Pain and anxiety control are closely linked and treatments under sedation often need to be aborted because of inadequate local anaesthesia. The unit will update students in pharmacology and local anaesthetic techniques, introduce advanced local anaesthetic techniques and provide medical simulator training in the management of the complications of sedation.

Anxiety Management
This unit will provide students with a knowledge and critical understanding of the theoretical framework that underpins cognitive therapy, including self-help and behavioural approaches.

Clinical Conscious Sedation
This unit is designed to prepare those with no experience in conscious sedation to independent practice. It will include supervised clinical practice in Bristol, as well as distance learning and study days where practical skills will be introduced before beginning supervised clinical practice. The unit covers the syllabus on basic sedation techniques published in 2015 by the Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry.

The Conscious Sedation in Dentistry PGDip aims to provide you with:
-A systematic understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin conscious sedation and anxiety management in dentistry

Although based at Newcastle University, teaching is provided in academic and clinical facilities throughout the northern region (Newcastle, Sunderland and Darlington).

This one year part time course consists of 10 didactic days of lectures and seminars, plus 14 half days of hands-on clinical training in sedation techniques. Didactic and clinical teaching is spaced evenly over a full academic year.

Clinical sessions are held in the Sedation Department at Newcastle Dental Hospital and in the Newcastle Community Service, which are fully equipped for all aspects of intravenous and inhalational sedation.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must possess a dental degree, which enables registration with the Dental Council in Ireland. Entry to training in conscious sedation in dentistry would normally follow a two-year period of general professional training post graduation that a student would already have undergone. Applicants must have evidence of satisfactory seroconversion for protection against Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Applicants will be requested to undergo Garda (Police) Vetting. All applicants must upload a separate statement (no more than 300 words in length) stating why they wish to undertake the Diploma.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the required proficiency for admission to this course is an IELTS (academic version) score of 7, with no individual band below 7.

Degree information

Year One provides students with the basic knowledge required in paediatric dentistry and teaches some of the clinical techniques needed in a laboratory setting. Year Two encourages more advanced and complex treatment planning and looks at other aspects of good patient care such as clinical governance. Year Three consolidates the learning to date and provides the theoretical experience required for graduates to understand, critically appraise and potentially carry out research.

The first cohort of students on the Paediatric Dentistry MSc are due to graduate in 2016, therefore no information on graduate destinations is currently available.

However, destinations of recent graduates of the institute’s Paediatric Dentistry Postgraduate Certificate (which this new programme supersedes) include: specialist registrar; senior dental officer, community dentistry; and clinical lead for dental salaried services.

Employability
As well as enhancing your clinical skills, this programme also supports the development of transferable skills such as the use of electronic resources, giving presentations and academic writing.

This is the only blended learning MSc programme to provide further training in paediatric dentistry, designed to support working dentists. Bristol University Open Learning for Dentists is a very popular modular distance learning programme for students aiming to achieve the Certificate or Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies. It provides a unique form of dental postgraduate education, designed for busy dental practitioners.

Students must complete three units (60 credits) from a choice of 11 to achieve the certificate or six units (120 credits) to achieve the diploma. Each unit provides a structured programme that involves reading, study days and assessments.

This method of study is not led by teachers in a classroom but is supported by tutors and administration at a distance, offering the flexibility to suit your personal needs. The units are specially written for the programme and are designed to be interactive, giving you the opportunity to think and learn for yourself. Following successful completion of the diploma, students may carry out a research project and prepare a dissertation to achieve an MSc.

All students applying for Postgraduate Dental Studies will initially be enrolled on to the certificate, and on satisfactory completion will be transferred to the diploma.

Occasional route of study]

The occasional route of study is an option for students who do not want a formal postgraduate qualification but still want to register for individual units. After successful completion of a unit, the student is awarded a transcript confirming that they have attained 20 credits; this could later be used in an application for Recognition of Prior Learning. CPD hours are also awarded. Students who have completed a unit via the occasional route may transfer to the certificate programme, subject to availability of places. The modular fee is the same regardless of the route of study.

Programme structure

The year is divided into three teaching blocks and students may only take one unit per block. Programme material is posted on Blackboard, an online learning environment. There are between one and four elements per unit and they contain assignments to be completed by the student. The units normally available are:

- Course purpose -

The MSc Programme in Paediatric Dentistry at King’s College London is one of the best established in the UK. The course is exacting and only the highest calibre of student is accepted. You will work hard, but we hope you will have fun here as well and have a memorable life experience.

Our aim is to produce students who will be at the forefront of Paediatric Dentistry, as clinicians, teachers and future leaders. The clinical activity is predominantly based at St Thomas’ Hospital, Waterloo, with seminars and clinics at Guy’s Hospital, London Bridge and at King’s College Hospital, located in Denmark Hill.

- Course format and assessment -

Modular programme consisting of 180 credits, plus an additional 180 credits of non-modular supervised clinical work (360 credits in total) as follows:

(i) Two taught modules, covering the scientific and clinical basis of Paediatric Dentistry usually assessed by written examination;

(ii) One clinical module, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of case studies on treated and unseen patients, practical, or oral examinations;

(iii) One research module assessed by a written research project report and an oral examination.

Career prospects

The majority of overseas graduates return to their own country to practice paediatric dentistry. Home students use this programme for career progression in the UK and are only accepted if they already have a UK (NHS) National Training Number and training at either KCH or GSTT. For UK trainees, the MSc counts towards 2 years of their NTN training. For those overseas students who do require a 3 year training, an additional third year is available (the PGCert) following on from MSc.

This programme is for dental surgery graduates who wish to extend their knowledge, clinical practice experience and expertise in oral surgery.

The programme will give you theoretical and practical understanding of oral surgery and how it relates to other dental specialities.

The syllabus includes components of the core competencies for oral surgery training for the General Dental Council and Royal College of Surgeons of England guidelines:

  • extraction of teeth & retained roots/pathology
  • management of associated complications including oro-antral fistula
  • management of odontogenic and all other oral infections
  • management of impacted teeth
  • management of complications
  • peri-radicular surgery
  • dentoalveolar surgery in relation to orthodontic treatment
  • intraoral and labial biopsy techniques
  • treatment of intra-oral benign and cystic lesions of hard and soft tissues
  • management of benign salivary gland disease by intra-oral techniques and familiarity with the diagnosis and treatment of other salivary gland diseases
  • insertion of osseointegrated dental implants including bone augmentation and soft tissue management
  • appropriate pain and anxiety control including the administration of standard conscious sedation techniques
  • management of adults and children as in-patients, including the medically at risk patient
  • management of dento-alveolar trauma and familiarity with the management and treatment of fractures of the jaws and facial skeleton
  • management of oro-facial pain including temporomandibular joint disorders
  • clinical diagnosis of oral cancer and potentially malignant diseases, familiarity with their management and appropriate referral
  • the diagnosis of dentofacial deformity and familiarity with its management and treatment
  • diagnosis of oral mucosal diseases and familiarity with their management and appropriate referral

  • medico-legal aspects of oral surgery

Programme structure

You will participate in lectures, seminars and a rehearsal of procedures in the clinical skills laboratory.

You will also undertake an integrated programme of theoretical, clinical and laboratory teaching.

Throughout the course you will be assessed by written examinations, case presentations, oral examination and the completion of a research project.

Develop your skills and expertise to a specialist level. Conforming to the GDC’s Specialist Curricula, the course covers the theoretical basis and practical skills needed to manage and treat periodontics and general restorative interdisciplinary cases.

You’ll use various complementary learning modalities, interacting with colleagues and allied specialties in restorative dentistry to jointly manage patient care. Over the three years, you’ll learn sophisticated research methods and apply them in a scientific research investigation, with specific outcomes for each year of study.

The programme has been approved by RCS Edinburgh as recognised speciality training for eligibility to sit their MRD examinations in the three sub-specialisms of Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics.

We have new modern research facilities and laboratories for tissue culture, molecular biology, materials science and histology- microscopy. All laboratories have dedicated technical support and academic expertise to guide you.

If you’re starting a course that involves exposure to human blood or other body fluids and tissues, you must conform to the national guidelines for the protection of patients, health care workers and students. Before admission to a clinical course we’ll need to check that you’re not an infectious carrier of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV and that you do not have tuberculosis. A positive test doesn’t necessarily exclude you from dental training.

You’ll study the laboratory methods used to prepare oral diagnostic material for histopathological examination and the research tools used to advance the practice of diagnostic oral pathology.

We teach you competence in the microscopical diagnosis of common and significant oral pathological lesions. You’ll learn when further information or additional procedures are needed to confirm a diagnosis.
