Course Description

The objectives of this programme are for participants to be able to develop and implement strategic security sector plans and analyse, communicate and evaluate the broader implications for related areas within state and regional frameworks.

Course overview

By the end of the MSc, students should be able to:

- Display knowledge of the players, processes and structures across a state’s wider security sector
- Understand the skill sets required to implement and manage the effective governance of national security policy and resources
- Fully comprehend the way in which national security requirements and development priorities are managed in a mutually supportive way
- Develop transferable skills in areas such as strategic management, project, and leadership challenges
- Critically analyse and evaluate strategic national security policy, donor policy and the development agenda
- Produce workable sector strategies, programme plans, change management schemes and performance assessment criteria
- Implement national security plans within identified constraints
- Plan, manage, monitor and evaluate projects and programmes in the security and development sector

Programme options:

- Postgraduate certificate: Requires the completion of Module 1 and 2, plus 4 other modules
- Postgraduate diploma: Requires the completion of all modules
- Masters of Science: Requires the completion of all modules as well as a 20,000-word research dissertation.

This course is offered as an executive part-time residential course and it is also the intention to launch a blended learning variant of this course in September 2016, combining residential sessions at either end of the taught phase of the Course with distance learning for the remaining 8 modules. The awards of MSc, PgDip and PgCert would all apply to the blended learning option.

The Security Sector Management programme is suitable for those who work in any security or development related organisation – as a policy maker or practitioner. The programme is also relevant to those who may wish to enhance their knowledge and skills based on a related 1st degree or those seeking to pursue careers in the field of security sector management.

You will be taught by faculty from Cranfield University, many of whom are world leaders in their field. These experts will share knowledge on a wide range of current global security-related challenges (such as governance, the environment, information security and institution-building), as well as ideas and frameworks to respond to these challenges. Modules are taught in the UK at Cranfield Defence and Security, Shrivenham, which is co-located with the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, as well as at the University’s central campus at Cranfield in Bedfordshire, UK.

Individual Project

A 20,000 word researched based dissertation will take the student approximately 6 months to complete. The dissertation phase of the MSc programme provides an excellent opportunity to further explore cutting edge issues in the broader security sector debate, and the way in which these issues impact on both theory and practice.

The program consists of a core of 7 courses (21 credits). Pedagogically, the program core focuses on building the critical analytical skills graduates need to succeed professionally and academically in the field of national security affairs. The ability to critically analyze intelligence information and global security issues, interpret historical and contemporary issues informing the field, and perform textual analyses, defines the program core's most important learning outcomes.

Following completion of the program core, students must complete 15 credits of coursework from the list of available electives. The majority of the elective offerings were developed specifically for the national security and international relations program, with a small number drawn from closely related fields. The elective list contains both courses that emphasize domestic security and courses that have a broader international focus, resulting in sufficient breadth of subject matter to allow students to tailor their choices around particular academic or professional interests.

Students interested in Cyber Security can choose to take a specific concentration in this area. Students who choose this option must complete 9 credits from the Cyber Security concentration and 6 credits from the elective list. Before choosing this option, students must secure permission from the Department of History and Political Science. After a consultation, it will be determined whether the student can enter the Cyber Security concentration, or if additional foundation courses will be required in order to enter and successfully complete the concentration.

Practicum

In addition to successfully completing all course work, students must pass a tabletop examination to be awarded the M.S. in National Security Affairs and International Relations. When a student has completed all coursework, has maintained a minimum of 3.0 GPA with no "incomplete" grades, and is a "student in good standing" with no disciplinary actions pending or disciplinary tasks to complete, the student will be eligible to take the tabletop examination. However, with the benefits deriving from the ability to automatically manage so much information, come major threats to businesses, governments and individuals. These threats include possible fraud through information manipulation, deliberate damage to stored and transmitted information, and blackmail associated with the threat of damage.

The field of Information Security, namely the study of countermeasures to these real and serious threats, has grown up very rapidly in recent years. The subject embraces a range of technologies such as cryptography, computer security, and fraud detection, and also includes the study of how security can best be managed.

This advanced course is taught by the Information Security Group (ISG), and security experts from industry. It is designed to produce a comprehensive education in the technical, legal and commercial aspects of Information Security.

Computer security is one of the key challenges in contemporary computing. You will gain critical knowledge within the cyber security and digital forensic domains, combining academic principles and industrial practice. The course is informed by current research in security and digital forensics, and is underpinned by our experience with external partners in law enforcement, financial institutions, and other knowledge transfer activities. Course specialisms include network security, penetration testing, incident response, malware analysis, cryptography, audit and compliance, and host and mobile digital forensics. Our unique National Security Studies MA is designed to bring together UK security policy practitioners, representatives from the private sector and policy-interested postgraduate students.

Students will gain an in-depth understanding of national security issues and the increasing focus on cross-governmental responses to security challenges. The course will also deal with conceptual and theoretical questions relating to national security.

The course will provide a mixture of UK national security analysis, with analysis of national security approaches in the international context.

The course in National Security Studies is unique by bringing together security policy practitioners and postgraduate students in the Department of War Studies. The core module in National Security Studies will be delivered on a weekly basis over two terms and will consist of highly interactive lectures and group sessions with academics and experienced officials that may include Professor Sir David Omand and Professor Lord Peter Ricketts amongst others.

The course will enable participants to develop an in-depth understanding of national security both in the UK and from an international perspective. The course will also focus on cross-governmental responses to security challenges. The course will be structured around key themes such as strategy, counter-terrorism and ethics in national security.

The course culminates in the King’s National Security Policy Briefing, where participants present their policy ideas to an elite panel of UK security practitioners.

This course has been designed to train security practitioners and postgraduate students in the fundamentals of national security, while also exposing them to practical and conceptual issues and challenges such as cyber security, counter-terrorism and the oversight of national security. The course will enable students to critically analyse national security and will educate students in key national security themes and allow them to critically analyse developments in the field.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

Per 40-credit module:

For lectures, seminars and feedback, you will typically have 40 hours of teaching. You will also have 360 hours of self-study.

Per 20-credit module:

For lectures, seminars and feedback, you will typically have 20 hours of teaching. You will also have 180 hours of self-study. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

For the dissertation module, you will have 12 hours of dissertation supervision and guidance workshops to complement the 588 hours of self-study.

Assessment

  • The required module is assessed by essays, oral presentation and written briefs.
  • Most 40-credit modules are assessed through a combination of essays (2,000-6,000 words), presentation, oral vivas and/or exams.

The MSc is normally studied over one year full-time or two years part-time.

This Master specialisation covers a broad range of topics that is important for computer security. This includes topics in computer science (software, computer networks, and hardware, esp. smart-cards and RFID), but also mathematical aspects (cryptography and security protocols), as well as organisational and management issues, legal aspects, and societal issues (in particular privacy).

Master's specialisation in Cyber Security

The Digital Security group at Radboud University is the largest research group in computer security in the Netherlands, with a strong international reputation. Several times, research by the group made the news headlines. For example, in 2008 students revealed security flaws in the chipcard used for public transport in the Netherlands (the ov-chipkaart) and as the London Oyster card. In 2013, two researchers of the Digital Security group found security vulnerabilities in car immobiliser systems used by various car manufacturers.
This master specialisation is offered in a collaboration with the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and the University of Twente (UT), through a virtual institute called the Kerckhoffs Institute (http://www.kerckhoffs-institute.org/). Mandatory courses offered at the TU/e and UT can be followed by video connections, but following optional courses at these institutes may require traveling to Eindhoven or Enschede. Such courses are always scheduled back-to-back at one location to minimise travel time. While this does incur a cost in time and travel expenses, it does offer a unique opportunity to choose courses from the broad range of specialties at the three universities.

Each module is delivered over the duration of four full days. It targets both concepts and practical skills that are relevant to industry. A multiple choice (MC) test at the end of the course provides attendees feedback on their achievements and must be passed before continuation of the academic assessment through coursework.

Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials and laboratory work. A strong emphasis is given to real world problems. Assessment is by a combination of coursework, projects, multiple choice and laboratory-based assessments.

Contact and learning hours

You will normally attend 3 hours of timetabled taught sessions each week for each module undertaken during term time, for full time study this would be 12 hours per week during term time. You are expected to undertake around 24 further hours of independent study and assignments as required per week. Academic Expertise

The programme is managed and delivered through our renowned Cyber Security Centre and Software Technology Research Laboratory.

The course teams within the Cyber Security Centre have unrivalled expertise in cyber security. The team includes former Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) of large telecommunications companies, internet banks and cloud service providers, an ex-vice president of one of the largest cyber security companies in the world, information assurance specialists with extensive experience working in various UK defence organisations, leading digital forensics experts and respected government advisors.

Several of the team are regular media commentators on forensics and security. Professional input throughout the course will come from Deloitte and their cyber security professionals.

Facilities

The Cyber Security Laboratories are among the best equipped facilities of this type in the UK. Developed in consultation with leaders in the industry, they are designed to meet the highest forensics and security standards.
The laboratories contain 65 high-spec, specially customised PCs configured with multiple operating systems, virtualisation and removable hard drives, as well as specialised servers, wired and wireless networking equipment and a wide variety of other hardware and software components.

Cyber Security Centre

The laboratories are also the base for our Cyber Security Centre (CSC), a multidisciplinary group of academics and industry experts who focus on a wide variety of cyber security and digital forensics issues. Their mission is to provide the full benefits to all of a safe, secure and resilient cyberspace.

The laboratories play a vital role in the group's research and development work. Whether you are a first year undergraduate or a PhD student, within the laboratories you will be working with the latest tools and techniques at the forefront of computer forensics and security research.
