In a cost and health-conscious world, health screening comes under constant scrutiny. How do we decide which screening programmes to introduce and which population groups to screen? What are the ethics behind screening? How do we quality assure programmes and ensure safety and effectiveness? At Warwick we take these questions seriously and want to help you find the answers.

Topics covered include:

-Screening programmes available in the UK.

In addition you will be provided with the tools to assess screening programmes through test performance, ethical issues and economic evaluation. You will also explore how to implement first-rate programmes though quality assurance. The most up to date policies, areas of debate and the future of screening programmes will be covered and discussed during the master class.

This interactive course uses a mixture of teaching methods, including group work, practical exercises, current screening examples and case studies based on current NHS screening programmes. There is also a designated question and answer session with health screening experts.

A certificate of course attendance and course completion will be will be issued by the University of Warwick.

We have expertise in Bertolt Brecht’s Epic Theatre, German Expressionism and French Surrealism, as well as the key auteurs of European cinema. We offer joint supervision with American Studies, Creative Writing, English Literature or Welsh as appropriate and are particularly interested in projects which explore cultural transfer from the European Continent to Wales in particular and the British Isles more broadly. Advanced research students may have opportunities to teach undergraduate tutorials and seminars. You have a budget (currently £200 per year) to attend conferences outside Swansea.

MA by Research in Screening / Staging degree typically lasts from one year (full-time study) to two years (part-time study).

The MA by Research in Staging / Screening Europe is ideal for those who want:

- an MA qualification in niche areas where taught programmes are not offered;

- the experience of a research degree without committing to a PhD, while retaining the option to upgrade to MPhil or PhD.

As a student of the Screening / Staging research programme you attend a series of training courses and have regular supervisions while you are reading around your topic and / or collecting your data and materials. You will write a 5000-word introductory essay in the first term and have designed an outline and sketched a synopsis by this stage. You will agree a series of milestones and deadlines with your experienced supervisory team who will accompany you each step of the way on your research journey.

This module is open to adult nurses working in Practice settings, where they are required to undertake cervical screening as part of their work. There is an expectation that subsequent to successful; completion of the module you will be able to take a minimum of 20 samples a year.

It provides practitioners with the opportunity to develop the appropriate knowledge and practical skills to enable them to undertake cervical screening with confidence and competence and to closely examine the ethical and political issues, which underpin cervical screening.

This course requires 4.5 days attendance plus a visit to your local colposcopy clinic. The following topics will be covered:
-Skills required for high quality sampling
-Anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive tract
-Pathologies associated with cervical screening
-Risk factors including sexually transmitted infections, in particular (HPV) Health promotion and lifestyles

This module is provided as part of this interdisciplinary Framework within the Faculty of Health Studies. The modules and academic awards are presented in areas representing employment practice or work based or clinical disciplines.

Whilst some students can build their own academic awards by choosing their own menu of module options, other students will opt for a named academic award. The Framework also provides the option for students to move from their chosen named award to another award if their job or personal circumstances change and they need to alter the focus of their studies. The majority of named awards also offer students, the option of choosing at least one module, sometimes more, from across the Faculty module catalogue enabling them to shape their award more specifically to their needs.

Learning activities and assessment

There are two assessments for submission:
1. A workbased e-portfolio for the regional competencies, including the achievement of Green RAG rating, 3 reflections and 2 online learning packages
2. Written audit report on practice - 2500 words

The assessment is the same at level 6 or 7 but the marking criteria is different.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. The Clinical Genetics MSc has a specific focus on delivery of the clinical service to patients including risk analysis and application of modern genetic and genomic technologies in medical genetics research and in diagnostics and population screening.

Genetic Disease and Clinical Practice

This course is designed in collaboration with the West of Scotland Regional Genetics Service to give students a working knowledge of the principles and practice of Clinical Genetics and Genomics which will allow them to evaluate, choose and interpret appropriate genetic investigations for individuals and families with genetic disease. The link from genotype to phenotype, will be explored, with consideration of how this knowledge might contribute to new therapeutic approaches.

Distress or Disorder: Reactions to a medical diagnosis

This course outlines the process of psychosocial adjustment to a diagnosis or test result allowing participants to establish if and when a distress reaction develops into an adjustment disorder. The implications of diagnosis are explored and evidence considered allowing informed decisions about appropriate referrals to other agencies.

Patient Empowerment: Supporting decisions relating to new diagnoses

This course reflects on evidence and experience to explore the psychological and social impact of a diagnosis, or illness, and provides strategies to support resilience and coping in patients. Factors related to lived experience, personal beliefs and values, culture, adjustment processes, decision-making, misconceptions, secrecy and guilt are considered to equip participants in the promotion of patient-centred care.

Effective listening and communication skills

With a focus on experiential learning and student led study, this course outlines the role of counselling skills to facilitate adjustment and to allow an individual to come to terms with change in a safe way to minimise impact. The focus will be on the theory supporting counselling, developing key listening and communication skills and on establishing reflective practice.

Case Investigations in Medical Genetics and Genomics

Students will work in groups to investigate complex clinical case scenarios: decide appropriate testing, analyse results from genetic tests, reach diagnoses where appropriate and, with reference to the literature, generate a concise and critical group report.

Clinical Genomics

This course will provide an overview of the clinical applications of genomic approaches to human disorders, particularly in relation to clinical genetics, discussion the methods and capabilities of the new technologies. Tuition and hands-on experience in data analysis will be provided, including the interpretation of next generation sequencing reports.

Disease Screening in Populations

This course will cover the rationale for, and requirements of, population screening programmes to detect individuals at high risk of particular conditions, who can then be offered diagnostic investigations. Students will work in groups to investigate and report on, a screening programme of their choice from any country.

Dissertation

The course will provide students with the opportunity to carry out an independent investigative project in the field of Medical Genetics and Genomics.

Teaching and Learning Methods

A variety of methods are used, including problem-based learning, case-based learning, lectures and tutorials. These are supplemented by a wide range of course-specific electronic resources for additional learning and self-assessment. As a result, you will develop a wide range of skills relevant to careers in clinical genetics. These skills include team-working and data interpretation. This MSc offers a comprehensive guide to all aspects of modern day drug design. It is taught by research scientists, clinicians and industry experts. Our graduates have progressed to undertake or obtain PhDs or medical studentships, or have found employment in both the private and public sector.

Degree information

The programme covers all aspects of drug design, including genomics, bioinformatics, structural biology, cheminformatics, molecular modelling and fragment-based drug design, drug target selection, intellectual property and marketing. New therapies and research areas such as antibodies, siRNA, stem cells and high throughput screening are covered. Students will develop essential skills such as research methods and techniques of drug design.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a research project (60 credits). All MSc students undertake an independent research project which can take the form of a literature project, wet lab/computer modelling based project or an external project with an industrial sponsor.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, self study, practical sessions and discussion groups. The research project forms one third of the programme. Each of the taught modules is assessed by unseen written examination (50%) and coursework (50%). The research project is assessed by the dissertation and viva.

The programme includes provision for developing a high standard of mammography skills. However, it also caters for those wishing to move into advanced and consultant practice to meet the evolving requirements of breast screening and diagnostic services.

The course is provided through a partnership between LSBU and King's College Hospital National Breast Screening Training Centre. Applicants will normally be a Health and CareProfessions Council (HCPC) registered radiographer, with a relevant professional qualification, or in possession of a first degree in a science, biomedical or health and social care subject.

The Breast Imaging programme is designed to address the increasingly specialised needs of practitioners for education to underpin professional practice in breast diagnosis.

Opera students are members of the TCO Resident Artist Training Program, where they gain professional experience while completing their studies. Careers

We expect students graduating from this programme to take leading roles in drug discovery and development worldwide or to undertake further PhD level research. The first cohort of students on the Drug Design MRes graduating in 2015 have found jobs in the pharmaceutical industry as well as PhD studentships in leading universities.

In this comprehensive program of study, you will cover a diverse range of simulated practice and fieldwork, interprofessional learning, contemporary blended learning and advanced clinical development.

Fieldwork

Professional practice experience is integrated into the course. Overall, you will be required to complete 216 hours of simulated experience and 840 hourse of professional practice experience in an appropriate workplace.

Professional recognition

Registration is subject to meeting all requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Failure to complete the course in the allocated time period may mean you will need to undertake additional units to ensure currency of practice.

Career opportunities

Upon graduation, you can work as a registered nurse in a variety of health settings such as public and private hospitals, community centres, nursing homes, home-based services and international organisations. Opportunities also exist in clinical education, research and management areas.

Credit for previous study

Applications for credit for recognised learning (CRL) are assessed on an individual basis. Students will gain the confidence in carrying out the methods that are widely used in medical statistics, and interpreting the results for the practice of evidence-based health care. The flexible modular structure has been devised for busy professionals and to fit with the structure of specialist training. The regulations allow students to take up to four years to complete the MSc.

This is a joint programme between the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences and the Department for Continuing Education's Continuing Professional Development Centre. The Programme works in collaboration with the renowned Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine in Oxford.

This course is designed for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, midwives and other healthcare professionals, seeking to consolidate their understanding and ability in medical statistics. Core modules introduce the students to methods for observational and clinical trials research. Optional modules offer the students skills in growth areas such as systematic review, meta-analysis, and big data epidemiology, or specialist areas such as statistical computing, diagnosis and screening research and others. Teaching is tailored to non-statisticians and delivered by an experienced team of tutors from University of Oxford who bridge the disciplines of medical statistics and evidence-based health care.

Course aims

The course aims to give healthcare professionals high competence in the concepts, methods, terminology and interpretation of medical statistics; and hence, enhance their ability to carry out their own research and to interpret published evidence.

• Gain competence in execution and interpretation of core statistical techniques used by medical statisticians (outside the context of clinical trials), particularly those used in multivariable analyses: multiple linear regression, logistic regression, and survival modelling; statistical analysis plans and statistical reporting.
• Gain competence in execution and interpretation of core statistical techniques used by medical statisticians in clinical trials.

You then have a week of personal study and you will be required to submit your assignment electronically the following week.

Online modules are delivered entirely through a Virtual Learning Environment with the first week allocated to introductory activities. There are ten units to work through which are released week-by-week, you then have five weeks of personal study with use of a revision forum and then you will be required to submit your assignment electronically the following week.

Collaboration between staff from the University of Glasgow and the NHS West of Scotland Genetics Service enables the MSc in Medical Genetics and Genomics to provide a state-of-the-art view of the application of modern genetic and genomic technologies in medical genetics research and diagnostics, and in delivery of a high quality genetics service to patients, as well as in design of targeted therapies.

Programme structure

Genetic Disease: from the Laboratory to the Clinic

This course is designed in collaboration with the West of Scotland Regional Genetics Service to give students a working knowledge of the principles and practice of Medical Genetics and Genomics which will allow them to evaluate, choose and interpret appropriate genetic investigations for individuals and families with genetic disease. The link from genotype to phenotype, will be explored, with consideration of how this knowledge might contribute to new therapeutic approaches.

Case Investigations in Medical Genetics and Genomics

Students will work in groups to investigate complex clinical case scenarios: decide appropriate testing, analyse results from genetic tests, reach diagnoses where appropriate and, with reference to the literature, generate a concise and critical group report.

Clinical Genomics

Students will take this course OR Omic Technologies for Biomedical Sciences OR Frontiers in Cancer Science.

This course will provide an overview of the clinical applications of genomic approaches to human disorders, particularly in relation to clinical genetics, discussion the methods and capabilities of the new technologies. Tuition and hands-on experience in data analysis will be provided, including the interpretation of next generation sequencing reports.

Research: About half of our graduates enter a research career and most of these graduates undertake and complete PhDs; the MSc in Medical Genetics and Genomics facilitates acquisition of skills relevant to a career in research in many different bio-molecular disciplines.

Diagnostics: Some of our graduates enter careers with clinical genetic diagnostic services, particularly in molecular genetics and cytogenetics.

Clinical genetics: Those of our graduates with a prior medical / nursing training often utilise their new skills in careers as clinical geneticists or genetic counsellors.

Other: Although the focus of teaching is on using the available technologies for the purpose of genetic diagnostics, many of these technologies are used in diverse areas of biomedical science research and in forensic DNA analysis.
