PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This programme is designed to suit current market demands. You will practise specialised translation in language-specific groups and have opportunities to simulate real-life translation scenarios.

The domains covered include economic, business, legal, scientific and technical translation. Our strong emphasis on translation technologies will allow you to work with computer-assisted translation software and state-of-the-art corpus tools and resources.

Equally important, the programme highlights the business requirements of the industry so that you acquire the necessary project management and entrepreneurial skills to work as a professional language service provider.

Furthermore, our EMT membership gives you priority access to traineeships at the EU Directorate-General for Translation.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The MA Translation is studied over one year (full-time mode) or two years (part-time mode). On successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a Master’s degree in Translation accredited by the European Masters of Translation.

Language-specific options are paired with English. If you are a native speaker of English, you can take up to two Specialist Translation options. If you are not a native speaker of English, you will normally take one Specialist Translation option (your mother tongue paired with English).

You can also choose one ab initio language if you wish to expand your portfolio of translation languages. Options ending in ‘I’ in semester 1 must be taken in conjunction with modules ending in ‘II’ in semester 2.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

In addition to enjoying regular contact with professional translators in your practice-based modules, you will benefit from course components that specifically address the business and wider industry aspects of the profession.

Further insights into the industry will be provided by the speakers we invite to our Translation Studies seminars series.

These include professional translators, interpreters, subtitlers and audio describers; professionals working in public services, companies and international organisations; representatives of professional translator/interpreter associations as well as translation/interpreting researchers.

In line with our aim to offer professionally relevant programmes, we have forged close links with the main professional bodies, i.e. the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and the Chartered Institute of Linguists, as well as with many professional language service providers, and we have an extensive network of visiting professionals.

In addition The Centre for Translation Studies has been granted free access to Memsource software to help further student's education.

CAREER DEVELOPMENTS

Thanks to our emphasis on professional development, our students are well-equipped to begin work as freelancers or as language service providers at international organisations, government bodies, universities and private companies.

We also regularly have students who decide to stay on to study for a PhD and pursue an academic career in Translation Studies.

The programme combines the study of the major principles of, and scholarly approaches to, translation with opportunities for application and practice – with the aim of enabling students to:
-Perform relevant translation tasks in different contexts
-Reflect on their own practice, using scholarly and professional writing on relevant aspects of translation, transfer the acquired skills and knowledge to novel and unpredictable situations of translation
-Develop a broad understanding of current and future challenges of translation in different contexts
-Apply scholarly approaches to critically evaluate professional practice in the light of current and future requirements
-Have the capacity for carrying out independent research in an area of translation

-A thorough understanding of issues relevant to translation as a discipline and as a practice/industry
-A thorough understanding of different aspects of translation as a profession, in particular with respect to principles of good practice, efficiency and professional standards, translation quality and resourcing
-Comprehensive knowledge of the strategies involved in good translation practice, i.e. audience identification, translating for a specific purpose

This exciting Chinese-English Translation MA programme develops an understanding of translation in a global context. You will explore how practical translation is informed by theory, develop your verbal and written communication skills and build your IT literacy to help you produce translation of the highest quality.

Overseas students will come to the UK not only to learn advanced translation skills from and into Chinese, but also to develop their English language skills and their knowledge of UK culture first-hand. The course is also open to students for whom English is a native language as long as their command of Chinese is at a high level.

The MA in Chinese-English Translation will enable you to develop the skills in translation, interpreting, analytical thinking, research and collaboration that are essential to today's workplace and which will equip you to facilitate communication between cultures.

The School of Modern Languages has an established record in translator training and excellent industry links. Its translation staff include practising professional translators and translation researchers. We are a corporate member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and an institutional member of the American Translators’ Association (ATA). We are on the ATA’s list of approved providers of translator training.

Programme Structure

Semester One
During the first semester, all students will participate in weekly workshop­-style classes in the Applied Translation unit taught by experienced professional translators. By grappling with a variety of different texts, participating in class discussions and receiving personal feedback from tutors, students will build the key skills necessary to grow and develop their translation ability.

The Theories of Translation unit is a lecture-based course that gives an opportunity for advanced reflection on the modes and purposes of translation within the translator’s social and cultural context, while also equipping students with the theoretical tools and approaches necessary for practical translation and further research.

Units in English for Translators and in Academic English build an awareness of how language works and help to hone English skills for professional purposes. Students whose native language is English may substitute these units for another.

Semester Two
During the second semester, the two main core units for all students are a 15,000 word dissertation and an Introduction to Specialised Translation. The dissertation takes the form of either an extended translation plus commentary, or a research-­based dissertation. The supervision process gives students time to formulate their ideas and plan their approach, as for many this will be the most substantial piece of extended writing they have undertaken.

The Introduction to Specialised Translation unit adopts a similar approach to Applied Translation, but focuses on key specialist areas that are in demand in the translation industry. Specialist topics can vary but may include literary, legal, scientific, medical and translation for technology.

In addition to the two core units above, students are also given the opportunity to select from a variety of optional units.

Careers

The MA in Chinese-­English Translation provides a foundation for students looking to enter or develop their careers in translation project management, freelance translation or as in-­house translators and interpreters in international corporate and government institutions.

The skills developed through this degree are transferable to a variety of related careers, such as international relations, PR, marketing and business. In addition, the research and theoretical components of this programme provide an excellent entry point to the field of Translation Studies for anyone aiming to pursue a PhD in the UK or abroad.

This programme aims to address the growing demand for translators with skills in translating technical texts.

The programme will familiarise you with the sociocultural, linguistic and technical dimensions that characterise specialised multilingual material. Through working with dedicated software and high-tech industry standard equipment, you will learn the skills you need to enter the professional market and gain the knowledge to pursue further research in this field.

There is a particular emphasis on learning translation tools (in particular SDL Trados) and on localisation, especially for video games. This programme is not limited to specific language pairs. You can work into and out of English and another language of your choice.

You will be taught by staff who are leaders in the field of translation and whose work has influenced organisations such as OFCOM. They work closely with industry and bring in key professionals in the field to teach and give talks, thus helping you to make vital industry contacts.

Roehampton boasts state-of-the-art language labs with cutting-edge translation software, including SDL Trados, Swift and WinCAPS. The lab also features a training suite and an open access area where you can work independently.

In recent years our graduates have found work with a broad range of organisations including: media companies and broadcasters such as the BBC, France TV, and RTVE; subtitling companies such as IMS, Deluxe, ITFC; and translation and localisation providers including Pole To Win, London Translations and JF Traduções e Interpretações.

As a Specialise Translation student you will become a member of the Centre for Research in Translation and Transcultural Studies, which promotes excellence in research into translation-related areas including language learning, audiovisual translation, accessibility to the media and other areas of translation.

Content

This course covers the theoretical and the practical aspects of specialised translation. In the compulsory module ‘Technical and Scientific Translation’ you will practice your skills in translating highly specialised documents into your chosen language. During the course you will also address the main theoretical issues shaping translation today and understand how these theories relate to the practice of translation.

IT skills are central to a translator's work so the compulsory module ‘Translation Tools’ will familiarise you with some of the translation tools you will be using in your professional life. These include terminology databases, translation memory tools, and other computer-assisted translation systems. You will be taught how to carry out efficient documentation and make appropriate use of research tools in solving technical and scientific translation problems.

You could also study ‘The Localisation of Video Games’ where you will examine the principles and practices of localisation in the area of multimedia interactive entertainment software. Other optional modules currently include ‘Subtitling: Concepts and Practice’, where you will explore the techniques of subtitle synchronisation using specialised software. MA students will also undertake a dissertation, which will provide you with the ideal opportunity to undertake an in-depth investigation of a translation-related topic that is of interest to you.

This MSc has the approval of the Royal Colleges of Surgery and aims to improve the level of scientific appreciation of surgical trainees by exposing them to scientific principles and methods. The programme is suitable for both surgical and dental trainees and is primarily intended to provide scientific research experience prior to or as part of the surgical training programme.

Degree information

Students gain skills in the verbal and written communication of science, together with an in-depth understanding of science-based subjects of clinical relevance. Students also undertaken in-depth scientific research project (50% of final mark) and an appreciation of scientific research which further trains them to appraise the current scientific literature/evidence and experimental design, practice and analysis.

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project on a subject of relevance to their clinical interests which culminates in a dissertation of 13,000 words and contributes 50% of the final mark. We encourage students to submit their work for presentation at conferences and for publication.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. Student performance is assessed through unseen written examination papers, written reports, oral presentations, written coursework and oral examinations, and a dissertation and oral examination for the research project.

Programme Contents

The TRANSMED studies are built upon three core educational themes:
Development of Research Skills
These include an introduction to current methodologies, which are further developed during a training period in a research group; research ethics: principles of clinical investigation; and writing of research or grant proposals.

Studies in Human Disease
These range from normal human physiology and anatomy, and basic biomedical courses, to more specialised studies covering various topics pertinent to the specialist option. You supplement these studies with clinical rounds, during which you have an opportunity to study selected patient cases in hospital wards, under the supervision of a clinician mentor.

Development of Communication Skills
These are promoted throughout the curriculum, through utilisation of interactive approaches and discussions, problem-based learning and oral presentations. The multidisciplinary TRANSMED community encompasses a wide range of educational backgrounds and provides ample opportunities for direct interactions with medical students, science and clinical teachers to enable you to practice and adopt interdisciplinary communication skills. At the end of the course of study, your communication skills will be evaluated in the final exam, during which you will orally present your research plan to expert examiners.

Selection of the Majors

The major of the programme is Translational medicine. During your first study year you can choose any of the five available specialisation options. These options and their specific goals are:
Neuroscience and Psychobiology
-To acquire knowledge on research methodology and state-of-the-art information in systems and cognitive neuroscience, as well as in clinical neuropsychology.
-To learn to produce new scientific information in the fields of psychobiology of human life, health, and stress, and to transfer the results between basic research and clinical settings.

Cancer
-To acquire basic knowledge of the principles of neoplastic growth, cancer progression and dissemination.
-To acquire basic understanding of the interplay between different cell types during neoplastic growth.
-To acquire knowledge of major research methodologies and disease models in cancer biology.

Regenerative Medicine
-To understand the principles of developmental and stem cell biology and regenerative pharmacology as the basis of regenerative therapies.
-To be familiar with the major technologies applied in regenerative medicine, including tissue engineering, cell and organ transplantation and transplantation immunology.
-To understand the ethical principles of clinical translation of basic research and application of regenerative medicine therapies.

Metabolic Disorders
-To be able to understand the basic metabolic pathways.
-To understand the pathophysiology of metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and obesity.
-To be able to use genetic knowledge as a basis for prediction, diagnosis and treatment of metabolic disorders.

Cross-Disciplinary Translational Medicine
-To achieve a broad understanding of topics and methods in the field of Translational medicine.

Programme Structure

The scope of the programme is 120 credits (ECTS) and can be completed within two academic years (60 ECTS / year).

The Master of Science in Translational medicine degree includes 60 ECTS of advanced and 60 ECTS of other studies. Both of these include both obligatory and optional studies.

The majority of the advanced studies are related to the chosen specialist option and include:
-Master’s thesis (30 ECTS)
-Placement in a research group for learning advanced methods in your selected field of study
-Methodological and human health and disease-related courses

Career Prospects

The Master of Science in Translational medicine degree provides excellent opportunities to apply for and attend postgraduate studies. Currently, 50% of TRANSMED graduates are continuing their studies in doctoral programmes, either at the University of Helsinki or abroad.

TRANSMED graduates are also highly valued in the private sector. Around 35% of graduates have been employed directly by bioindustry, pharma or other health sector enterprises either in Finland or abroad. Titles include product manager, product specialist, personalised health care manager etc. All such enterprises usually recruit both at the graduate (MSc) and postgraduate (PhD) levels.

The health and health technology sectors represent a rapidly emerging field, and one of the areas with a growing importance as the population ages and the costs of new therapies steadily increase. The Translational Medicine major is only available in this international programme, making the programme attractive to both Finnish and international students. Our Clinical Neuroscience course enables trainees in neurology, psychiatry and related health-care disciplines to study the anatomical, physiological and pathological basis of symptoms and signs of brain disorders. Dissertation/report
All students undertake a library project which is assessed by a 5,000-word essay, and an independent research project, which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through basic and clinical lectures, seminars and practical and interactive workshops. Lectures are supported by audio-visual aids and supplementary materials including handouts, reading lists and references to original papers. Assessment is through unseen and multiple-choice examination, essay, library project, dissertation and oral examination.

Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine are rapidly expanding fields with the potential to revolutionise modern medicine. This cross-disciplinary programme provides students with a robust scientific understanding in these fields, combined with a "hands-on" practical and translational focus.

Degree information

This programme will equip students with a critical understanding of:
-How nanotechnology can be harnessed for the improved detection and treatment of disease.
-The use of stem cells in medicine.
-Tissue engineering strategies for tissue regeneration.
-Improving biomaterials for directing cell behaviour.
-The regulatory, ethical and commercial hurdles for the translation of these emerging technologies.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), one optional module (15 credits) and a research project (90 credits). A Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) is offered. The programme consists of two core modules (30 credits) and two optional modules (30 credits).

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, group discussions, practical sessions, and demonstrations. Assessment is through presentations, problem-solving workshops, written practical reports, coursework, unseen written examinations and the dissertation.
