A look into any public school classroom across the state or nation would reveal a variety of learners with specific needs. It is a common occurrence for a highly gifted English speaker, a special needs student, and students whose first languages may reflect Arabic, Burmese, Farsi, Kurdish, Somali, Spanish, and Swahili (to name a few) to be working together. The multi-lingual classroom is now typical instead of unique. The challenges posed by the classroom structures and populations require teachers to gain knowledge and understanding while developing expertise in the areas of second language acquisition, appropriate strategies and models for effective instruction, assessment tools and accommodations, and literacy frameworks, practices, and overall language learning. In addition, today’s classrooms require educators to become skillful examiners in order to conduct classroom action research that leads to improved practice and teacher efficacy. The M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction in English as a Second Language is delivered online.

Degrees

This online licensure-based program, offered by the Womack Educational Leadership Department and leading to a Master’s of Education (M.Ed.) with a major in Curriculum and Instruction and a concentration in English as a Second Language is designed for: a) candidates seeking the master’s degree with Add-on Endorsement in ESL, b) candidates seeking the Initial Professional License in ESL, and c) candidates seeking the Add-On Endorsement in ESL (without degree).

The M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with concentration and licensure in ESL focuses on preparing professional educators to meet the needs of students who are currently enrolled in U.S. public school classrooms in grades PreK-12. These populations may include students who represent immigrant populations, newly arriving non-English speakers, children of immigrants, and diverse populations with a variety of language and learning needs. The program is designed specifically for teachers and those who plan to teach second language learners in multilingual classrooms within the U.S.

Coursework is aligned with the Tennessee Department of Education Professional Licensure Standards for ESL and the CAEP Standards and Professional Dispositions for public school educators. The program takes a literacy-based approach to teaching ELs and is grounded in state and national education initiatives. The program is revised on an ongoing basis to reflect current practice.

This program is delivered online and does not prepare candidates to work exclusively with adult learners in EFL settings.

Career

The M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with Concentration and Licensure in ESL offers preparation to candidates to teach in public schools, private schools, and faith-based learning environments. The program also seeks to prepare teachers to work with early learners who are also second language learners in preschool settings, nursery school settings, and early learning classrooms. Candidates who successfully complete the program meet requirements for the Pre-K through 12th grade professional license in ESL.

MTSU's combined M.A and Ed.S. program in School Psychology is field-based with a research-based thesis required. The National Association of School Psychologists first approved the program in 1991, and graduates are eligible for national certification until the next review cycle in approximately 2020. The program also seeks to prepare Ed.S.-level school psychologists for licensure by the Tennessee Board of Education. The school psychologist must be prepared to understand and deal with the child's three major social systems: society in general, the family situation, and the school system. MTSU uses a psychosocial model and promotes a multicultural perspective. Students also get training in assessment and intervention with school pupils who have dyslexia, through the Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia and neighboring education districts. Graduate and research assistantships are among financial aid possibilities.

Career

MTSU graduates are employed in education as either school psychologists or behavioral analysts. This module covers all aspects of the English, mathematics, science and computing national curriculum at Key Stage 1.

- Professional studies
This module covers theories of learning, planning, teaching and assessment, classroom management and employment.

The Curriculum and Instruction program, leading either to a Master of Education (M.Ed.) or a Specialist in Education (Ed.S.) degree is designed to foster the development of teaching skills that result in increased pupil performance. By analyzing curriculum choices and strategies, along with best teaching practices, those who complete either of these programs will be better equipped to provide an environment in which students engage in relevant and meaningful learning activities. Upon enrollment in a Curriculum and Licensure program, students will select either the research path or the practicum path. MTSU offers a specialization in secondary education licensure. This specialization offers a path for non-licensed degree-holding individuals seeking licensure to teach in secondary public schools. The Womack Educational Leadership department also offers a non-licensure generalist Curriculum and Instruction major.

The Department of Elementary and Special Education offers the Master of Education degree with a major in Curriculum and Instruction. For a long time we believed that smart children would make it on their own. But that’s a misconception. They can rapidly adapt to expectations and their peers, covering up their giftedness. And as a result, their talent is lost and a learning or behavioural disability could even arise. Therefore, there’s plenty for remedial educationalists to do!
Giftedness is more than IQ. Physical, musical, social and creative abilities are also involved. You will study how personal characteristics – like motivation and performance anxiety – abilities, and surroundings influence each other. You will learn how to identify the needs of a gifted pupil. You will test your gut feeling with research results. You will be critical of both your field and your own talents and talent development. You will investigate the conflict between stimulating talent and being fearful of doing so. Do we want people to excel? Do we dare to want it?
This programme will challenge you to look beyond the accepted views on giftedness. To look beyond protocols. And beyond the Netherlands. - The Master’s specialisation in Gifted Education at Radboud University is the only Master’s specialisation in the Netherlands that focuses on giftedness.
- The programme works closely with the Centre for the Study of Giftedness (CBO), the only academic research institute that focuses on giftedness. Lianne Hoogeveen, head of the institute and developmental psychologist, is one of the lecturers within this specialisation. Fitting educational programmes is the new standard: there are less special needs programmes and mainstream schools must accommodate students with learning disabilities themselves. Awareness is growing that we need to deal with giftedness differently. Smart children will not simply make it on their own. They need special support. Just as remedial educationalists are needed for dyslexic children, they are also needed for gifted children, to make sure these pupils get the help and support they need in the classroom. Job positions

With this Master’s specialisation you’ll be able to work as an remedial educationalist, educational advisor, policy maker, researcher or teacher. You can use your expertise for school consultancy at a particular school or a group of schools such as schools for gifted pupils, Leonard Schools but also regular schools that pay attention to gifted pupils. You will also be able to work for research centres, like the Center for the Study of Giftedness (CBO), the SLO, Netherlands Institute for Curriculum Development, KPC Groep and the Centre for Creative Learning.

Career orientation programme

The expertise of the research group ensures there is a good relationship with schools, organisations and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. When, for example, the ministry wants to know more about giftedness, they ask the Center for the Study of Giftedness (CBO) in Nijmegen. Practical questions often lead to research proposals for theses or interesting internships. That way, you’ll be able to get invaluable contacts and make a name for yourself in this field.

Our approach to this field

Excellence is a topical issue. International studies (like the PISA Studies) have shown that the Netherlands deals well with lower scoring students: the country is in the top five. But in comparison, the country does not deal well with children that score above average. Gifted children do not get the education they need and that means that a lot of talent is wasted. The government is encouraging schools to offer gifted children a fitting programme. To be able to do this, schools need help from experts. Upon completion of your studies, you will be that expert!

When you complete this Master’s specialisation, you’ll be able to analyse and investigate problems regarding giftedness and come up with suitable solutions. You will gain the following skills and knowledge during this programme:

The University of Northampton is working as the Initial Teacher Training provider for a diverse and innovative group of Lead Schools and their Alliance schools in Northamptonshire and its surrounding counties to support the delivery of PGCE QTS programmes through the School Direct route. The PGCE QTS programme is the same for those on a University place or School Direct place.

If you would like to apply for a School Direct place for training to teach in 2017-18, then you will need to consider which route will be most suitable and which will be available with different Lead Schools. There are two routes for School Direct applicants:

1. The School Direct (Salaried) route: you will be employed by one of the Lead Schools or their Alliance schools and receive a salary while you train to become a teacher. This programme will lead to Postgraduate Certificate of Education or Professional Graduate Certificate of Education with recommendation for QTS.

2. The School Direct (Training) Programme: you will be based for a large part of your training in one of the Lead Schools or their Alliance schools but you will pay fees for the training programme. This programme will lead to Postgraduate Certificate or Professional Graduate Certificate with QTS. You may be eligible to apply for a bursary which varies according to degree classifications and subject specialisms. Please contact for further details.

This programme will develop you into a highly committed, creative and reflective teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will be training to teach children within the age range offered by the Lead School. On successful completion, you will have achieved 60 credits at Masters’ Level (PGCE) and be recommended for and awarded Qualified Teacher Status. You will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding such that you can demonstrate the professional standards for teaching required by the Department for Education and exceed the minimum expectations for each Standard.

Course content

The programme is structured to promote academic rigour, skilled practice, independence and flexibility. The emphasis in the programme reflects the primary national curriculum and priorities. The programme develops your subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and leadership skills so that you can apply this through teaching in primary classrooms. We work in partnership with schools across Northamptonshire and its neighbouring counties. This enables you to learn in a diverse range of schools. Learning Events comprise of pre and post face to face sessions with tutors for groups or whole cohorts. During the University based days, you are expected to be available between 9-5pm. During School based days, you are expected to be in school between 8.20am and 4pm.

Assessments

Assessment is continuous. You will engage in four assignments which will contribute towards your M Level Modules. Your teaching, including planning and assessment, is also assessed against the Teachers’ Standards. Partner schools share the responsibility for assessment during the practical teaching.

Facilities and Special Features

You will have access to the School Experience Library. This is an established and extensive set of resources specific for trainee teachers to support your placements and includes activities, big books and planning materials. “The quality of training is enhanced by the excellent resources at the University” (Ofsted 2014).

Other admission requirements

A minimum of five GCSE passes at grade C or above and these must include Mathematics, English Language and Science. You must be interviewed and we will explore your suitability for teaching including undertaking DBS and Disqualification by Association.

This NCTL accredited PGCE Early Years course at London Met and our lead schools prepares you for teaching three to seven-year-olds (Key Stage 1) and leads to Qualified Teacher Status.

The course consists of theoretical study at London Met and two practical school placements of 11 and 13 weeks. We’ll extend your knowledge, develop your classroom practice and help you examine the underlying principles and values that inform current debates around educational issues.

At London Met, you’ll learn about teaching in urban, multicultural and multilingual schools and will address the issues of language, diversity and equality across the curriculum. Training within the framework and principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the unique London context, you’ll be well equipped to help maximise every child's’ development.

During your school placements you will be supported by school-based mentors and university-linked tutors. The tutors will also deliver your university sessions, ensuring continuity of support throughout the PGCE.

Overall, the purpose of the course is to develop you into a teacher of the highest quality. One who is reflective, creative, imaginative and responsive to all children’s needs. This approach has led to the course being highly rated by Ofsted:

Work placement:
-120 days in two London placements learning to teach with a mentor in primary schools

After the course

This PGCE leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which enables you to teach either 3 to 7 year olds. Our trainees from this course have gone on to become teachers at schools like Grafton Primary, Tudor Primary and Willow Tree Primary. Whether you have applied through London Met or School Direct, you’ll have the same opportunities for employment upon successful completion of the course.

Funding

Funding is available for many postgraduate courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Depending on your teaching subject and degree classification, you may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship of up to £30,000 through the teacher training bursary.

PGCE School Direct

The School Direct school placements work around the training calendar for the student teacher with the PGCE offered at the university. This means we can only offer places in Early Years / Primary and in Secondary teaching Maths, Modern Languages and Science with a specialism in Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

You will attend the training workshops at the university with other regular PGCE students and carry out placements of 120 days in a school or consortium of schools with a School Direct allocation. This time could be divided between two schools with some flexibility.

London Met has School Direct partnership with nearly 100 schools. This large body of schools have joined with us to build a cross-capital alliance, providing diverse contexts in which to train the new generation of London teachers.

Most of our trainees follow a programme modelled on the traditional PGCE, with time spent under tutor supervision at London Metropolitan University and the school placement divided between two partner schools.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

Leeds Trinity University offers Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) (FHEQ Level 6) initial teacher training courses in a number of subject areas. PGCE students are also registered to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education qualification (PGCert) (FHEQ Level 7).

While in school you benefit from excellent support and mentoring from a university-trained mentor. We have placement links with over 600 schools and other institutions, we are also involved with a variety of lead schools on the School Direct programme, and many of our students end up being offered teaching jobs in the schools that they train in.

All of our practical sessions take place in purpose-built labs, which replicate the teaching areas typically found in schools.
During the course, you’ll be able to choose to complete either the PGCE or the professional graduate certificate in education (ProfGCE). Both qualifications earn you QTS status, but the PGCE also gives you 60 credits towards a masters degree.

Expert academic staff

Our expert science tutors have over 120 years’ teaching experience between them. They have held positions ranging from head of department to assistant head and head of year in a variety of local, national and international schools, where they were responsible for teacher trainees, the induction of NQTs and staff development. We support your work in schools with a programme of preparation and support. You experience various school placements, including at least two continuous blocks of time on teaching practice. These are in two different schools and usually require some travelling within the region.

Assessment: academic assignments including practice-based essays, individual and group work, presentations and reports, preparing teaching materials and plans, teaching practice

You are encouraged to gain experience of schools through direct observation of teaching and learning and/or by working with young people in science-related or other educational activities. If you are shortlisted, we will invite you to a selection event, and you should bring a passport or photo driving license with you. You can bring other forms of photo ID for the selection event, but if you do, you will still need to present valid identity documents required by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) at your pre-course day.
