The MA(Ed) programme supports the development of a high status, world leading teaching profession by focusing on advanced subject knowledge and understanding of how to best utilise evidence-based practice in order to unlock the

potential of all learners.

Typically you will study part time, taking four modules over two years, plus your dissertation over a third year.

How do I achieve an MA in Education?

One content module will be available per semester. MA(Ed) modules include: Effective Pedagogy; Emotional Aspects of Learning; and Leading Learning.

The Critiquing the Effect of Workplace Learning module enables you to accredit informal workplace learning that you may be undertaking in your work setting.

Our MA(Ed) programme provides the opportunity to follow your own particular area of interest throughout every module, for example a specific focus on maths subject knowledge; SEND; or management. 

You will be encouraged and supported to ensure that the practitioner research you undertake during your study reflects your chosen focus, thus the programme is both specialised and personalised. Although this will not lead to a named specialist award, your modules will be shown on your academic transcript.

You are also able to select modules from other Masters programmes within the Institute of Education at the University of Chichester, for example MA in Inclusive Special Education.

The MA(Ed) is made up of four 30 credit modules and a dissertation (split into two, 30 credit modules).

You will study for your MA at our Bognor Regis campus.

Over the past few years, we have redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available for your degree. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.

At the Bognor Regis campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support. We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. 

A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas. We use an electronic learning environment with an expanding portfolio of online library resources from anywhere at any time.

Our brand new award winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus. It hosts a modern library service with areas for quiet and silent study on both floors. 

Also situated in the LRC is the Support and Information Zone, Costa Coffee and over 80 open access work stations. An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

The campus also offers purpose built classrooms for the teacher training courses, as well as lecture and seminar rooms.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

Two years (four semesters) at the rate of one module per semester, plus a further year (two semesters) for the dissertation (parts 1 and 2). We appreciate that circumstances can change and part-time students are helped by having flexible study arrangements. To that end, we permit you to intermit from the programme for a maximum of 2 years over the whole programme, provided that you return and complete the degree within 6 years.

A module is a unit of up to 24 hours taught/face-to-face delivery, typically over one semester with its own discrete assessment and carrying 30 M level credits. Each module is formed of small group seminars and one Saturday Workshop, held at Bognor Regis campus. Sessions will normally be delivered between 5.30 – 8.00 pm, but times may vary.

Assessment

The MA (Education) programme draws on a range of assessment methods including video diaries; practitioner research projects; 6,000 word essays; and presentations. 

To gain a MA (Education), you will need to complete four modules and the dissertation parts 1 & 2 (4 x 30) + 60 = 180 credits.

It is your right to exit the programme at any time. After successful completion of two modules you would be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice and after four modules you would be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice.

This PGDip Teaching Studies programme is for recently qualified teachers who are interested in continuing their professional development. Successful completion will allow you to progress onto the MA in Teaching Studies. The School also offers a number of specialised Professional Development programmes which will enable teachers to further develop their career.

These three modules will allow you to identify and investigate aspects of professional practice as qualified teachers with the aim of improving that practice. The course normally runs as a one year programme and commences in September and ends in July.

The modules are undertaken in succession and are taught on Saturdays.

The Investigating my subject teaching module focuses on your work as a subject teacher and how lessons are created, along with other opportunities for learners to learn the subject most effectively. Teaching can be investigated in relation to numerous issues. Examples of issues include teaching specific aspects of a subject such as key concepts or essential subject skills and understanding; evaluating a series of lessons/scheme of work; balancing teaching to the test with broader subject learning; creating subject learning through science or technology experiments/field visits/sports competitions; subject teaching in a primary school.

Investigating my work as a member of a school team

One Saturday in April, two Saturdays in February, one Saturday in June

This module will normally centre on your work with other staff in your school and how this work can contribute to overall school improvement. The module will provide you with an opportunity for you to investigate your work in relation to numerous issues. Examples include being part of a subject/pastoral/other team; engaging with parents; engaging with the local community; working on extra-curricular activities such as trips, sport and cultural activities.

Delivery

This course involves a mixture of distance learning and week-long intensive schools delivered in Singapore.

Pre-school materials are provided for you to review what will be taught and so that you get the most out of the intensive school. The pre-school materials are made available four weeks prior to the intensive school.

Each one week intensive school runs from Saturday to Saturday:

It involves a piece of investigative research which focuses on a research problem of particular interest to you and is often work-based.

After successfully completing your dissertation, you will graduate with an MA in Coaching and Mentoring Practice.

Teaching and learning

This programme is taught through a series of Friday or Saturday seminars and workshops (approximately one a month). We use a variety of teaching and learning methods designed to enable you to develop active learning techniques, reflect on practice and undertake independent research. You can choose Friday or Saturday as your preferred day of attendance.

Approximately 50% of the programme is delivered online in the Oxford Brookes virtual learning environment through which you can discuss, debate and support each other in your studies. You are encouraged to communicate electronically with your supervisor and tutors (eg by email, Skype, etc).

All teaching, learning and assessment activities draw on the professional backgrounds, experience and knowledge of all participants and encourage critical reflection. Teaching staff have research interests and expertise in coaching and mentoring and related fields. Visiting speakers from business and industry provide further input. You can attend events from the Oxford Brookes Coaching and Mentoring Society (OBCAMS), which meets monthly, and attracts outside speakers and presenters from all areas of coaching and mentoring.

Approach to assessment

All assessment is based on a variety of coursework assignments and a dissertation - there are no exams.

MA Education and Professional Enquiry is a part-time programme for experienced teachers that enables you to develop the skills to become an informed practitioner researcher.

You’ll gain theoretical and practical perspectives on teaching and learning, and we’ll help you apply such ideas to your classroom practice. You’ll look at the language development and importance of classroom and teacher-pupil dialogue, while also examining barriers to learning that impede pupils’ progress.

We’ll introduce you to the action-enquiry practitioner research cycle and other methodological approaches so you can use a range of techniques to inform your own professional practice. You’ll learn how to create, interpret and communicate your findings, evaluate current research, and interpret attainment data.

And we’ll work with you to orientate your professional practice within a school, leadership, policy and national context. You’ll investigate various definitions of school culture and ethos, and examine influencing factors. You’ll consider how to lead teaching and learning in a classroom, and departmental and whole school contexts, and considering collaborative practice and exploring leadership skills.

We’ll also examine developments in the school curriculum, innovative teaching methods and current issues in assessment, while also helping you to manage effective group work in the classroom.

MA Education and Professional Enquiry gives you the opportunity to build upon your existing qualifications and professional and academic experiences, and use these as part of your accreditation by towards the programme. Studying further postgraduate modules and completing a dissertation in year three allows you to qualify for the full MA award. We recognise the demands put on all teachers working full-time, so we designed the MA Education and Professional Enquiry to ensure that the workload in any one year is not excessive and you will be able to focus on issues that have specific interest and relevance to you and your school.

The programme only requires your attendance at eight Saturday teaching days in the first two years of the programme, alongside private study. When you write your dissertation under the supervision of a research-active academic in your third year, you will be able to access tutorial support either face-to-face, online or by telephone.

Course content

In your first year, you'll examine key contemporary theories on how children learn, develop and use language in the classroom and discover how to use theory to critically analyse classroom practice and facilitate effective teaching.

You'll also develop a critical and practical understanding of how to use appropriate research methods in the classroom and with teachers and learners, and learn how these techniques can help you evaluate, reflect, and improve your professional practice.

You’ll build on this foundation in the following year when you'll examine the concept of school "cultures", consider developments in school curriculum, and explore innovative teaching techniques that can support children's motivation, engagement and learning. You'll also study the importance of teacher collaboration and effective leadership in a classroom and managerial context.

This knowledge will also inform your dissertation, which makes up your final year. You’ll conduct a small-scale research project that relates to your own interests in the field of education.

Learning and teaching

We deliver this programme through eight Saturday schools over a two year period and a range of online learning materials to inform your own private study. The Saturday schools use a mix of lectures and seminars, and offer you the opportunity to meet with other teachers to exchange experiences and ideas. You can also organise your dissertation supervision to be face-to-face, online or by telephone in the third year.

Assessment

We assess your progress for the first two years through the submission of two 3000 word assignments each year. Before you submit your assignments, there are opportunities for formative assessment by tutors and your peers and you will receive constructive feedback on your assignment ideas. You also submit a dissertation of 12,000 words by the end of your final year.

As an established teacher, MA Education and Professional Enquiry will provide you with an opportunity to develop your professional practice to become a more effective teacher and a researcher-practitioner. The course offers two thematic strands in which students specialise. The first, British local and regional history, is constant throughout all intakes. The second, which changes for each intake, is Politics and religion in Tudor and Stuart England for the 2016-2018 course. Course detail

The MSt is taught over two years in short, intensive study blocks, and begins in October 2016 (Michaelmas Term). It has been designed to be accessible to those in full- or part-time employment and to international students.

Successful applicants will become members of a Cambridge college and will join the wider graduate community, with full access to the facilities of the University.

By the end of the course students should have:

- developed an understanding of, and ability to apply critically, the main academic theories and concepts underpinning the study of history;
- extended and developed their analytical, evaluative and critical capacities;
- developed the ability to form independent judgements based on their reading, research and writing;
- demonstrable specific subject knowledge and analysis relevant to their dissertation;
- developed research skills required for further postgraduate research.

Format

The MSt is structured around four residential modules that students must attend. All students take modules 1 and 3 together; modules 2 and 4 are subject pathway modules. In the first year, each of the four residential blocks is preceded by guided preparatory reading and other activities.

A Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) offers learning support to students while they are on the programme, including learning resources, peer-to-peer and student-to-tutor discussion between modules, to build a virtual community of practice. Students are expected to have sufficient IT skills to engage with the VLE and all assignments are uploaded to the VLE for assessment.

Lectures, seminars and classes: c.75 hours in Year 1 (including some reading/prep time), c.18 hours in Year 2.

Supervision: 5 x 1-hour sessions in Year 2.

The taught elements of the syllabus are offered during Year 1 in four intensive study blocks, usually scheduled inside Full Term, each of which is examined by an assessed essay. Sessions are offered in research training, and essay and dissertation writing.

Year 2

The second year is characterised by focus on the dissertation. Students will work independently on their chosen topic under the supervision of an expert in their chosen field with whom they will have regular contact. Students will be required to attend five supervisions between May 2017 and May 2018, at least three of which must be face-to-face and two of which can be online.

There will also be three day-schools at Madingley Hall, at which students provide short presentations on their research to date and at which there is some research training:

In the current business climate, it is increasingly important for business managers and leaders to update and advance their business knowledge and skills. The Doctor of Business Administration offers the opportunity for those with an enthusiasm for learning to gain a professional doctorate, the highest level of professional qualification available in business and management. Drawing on the work of international experts in our Business School you will learn about the latest management techniques and research methods. The DBA is undertaken on a part-time basis and typically takes five years to complete. It is organised around four 2-day learning workshops a year, facilitated by internationally renowned practitioners and researchers who offer contrasting perspectives on management philosophy, organisation development and methodology in management research. These structured workshops both underpin the individual programme of research that participants undertake as a key part of their studies whilst also allowing for continuous peer review and engagement.

As the Durham-EBS Executive EMBA is delivered entirely in English in a classroom setting, you can continue to work full-time whilst studying as most teaching is delivered once each month in three-day blocks (Thursday through to Saturday).

Strategic Business Project

Following the completion of your elective modules, you will undertake a research-based Strategic Business Project. You may choose to pursue the project in two ways, either by working with your own company or a host organisation, or through an issue-led investigation which is not focused on a particular organisation but instead examines a specific management issue.

You will receive training in academic writing, as well as qualitative and quantitative business research methods throughout the programme as part of this module.

This is a great opportunity for you to apply your MBA skills and knowledge to address a practical question and help your own or another organisation tackle a current issue or challenge. Whilst undertaking the project you will further develop your research and management skills, building your network and, and in many instances, extending your international experience.

Past projects have been undertaken across a wide variety of organisations, such as multinational corporations in the manufacturing, service and finance sectors, family-owned businesses, the public sector and non-profit organisations.

Two Residential Weeks

Your first residential is a seven-day induction in the UK at the start of your Durham-EBS Executive MBA journey, which will launch you into the programme. It’s a great way to introduce you to the EMBA and enhance your key capabilities including team building, group work, reading and academic writing skills (supporting those who may have been away from academic education for some time).

Not only will you spend time at Durham University Business School and have the chance to explore the city of Durham, you will go on to discover another area in the UK. In previous years this has been the Lake District, a charming region in the Northwest of England.

Your induction will start on a Sunday in Durham, where you will meet your fellow students and members of the EMBA Programme Management Team. You will receive personal introductions, be provided with information to navigate your way through the programme, and learn out about support and administrative services. 

On Monday you will familiarise yourself with Durham University and then on Tuesday you will receive academic writing training and attend your first module.

Following the completion of your module you will travel to another UK destination where you will engage in a variety of indoor and outdoor team-building experiences and develop various additional personal and team skills. This is a particularly memorable aspect of the EMBA and the relationships built here will last throughout the programme and beyond.

Your second residential week will take place the following year, probably in September. During this week you will complete another core module in Durham, UK, and experience further indoor and outdoor skills enhancement and team-building activities.

There are also two exams. The exams take place only in the first semester and are required by the CIPD across all approved programmes. Exam briefing is given is giving to help prepare you for these assessments.

There will also be a dissertation which carries 60 credits. The dissertation requires you to conduct a piece of empirical research on a topic of your choice (and approved by your tutor). Most students choose to conduct their research on a key ‘people management’ issue within their own organisation.

To obtain a Master's degree you need to carry out a supervised research project comprising of another taught module, Research methods and a 10,000-15,000 word research project. The project can be based on an environmental management issue that interests you or is relevant to your organisation.

Environmental Management is of increasing importance to all types of organisations both within the UK and worldwide; there is a growing need for qualified and trained environmental managers and, as environmental challenges become ever more apparent, this demand shows no signs of abating. Graduates from our Environmental Management MSc programmes have embarked on careers with a wide variety of employers within the environmental management sector, including environmental consultancy, the water supply industry and Government agencies such as the Environment Agency and the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs. Graduates have also commenced doctoral level studies and developed careers in research and education.

Teaching methods

The programme approach integrates blended learning, combining face-to-face teaching and tutorials with online learning materials, easy contact with tutors and online submission of assignments.

All modules are delivered as intensive two or three day short courses that run Fridays and Saturday or Thursday to Saturday.
Full-time students attend tutorials in the weeks following a short course, receiving face-to-face support.

Part-time students attend courses at the University for approximately six working days a year and complete assignments through use of our outstanding virtual learning environment, Studynet. Most part time students complete this course within two years but you are given a maximum of five to complete.

Assessment can include reports, essays, seminars and online tests. Assignments are often directly related to environmental management in the workplace or field.

You have access to excellent University facilities including a field station, state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre and a brand new Science Building.

Description

Our Construction Law and Dispute Resolution course provides a unique cross-professional perspective on this area of the law. Our programme includes a foundation course in law for non-lawyers and a foundation course in construction technology for lawyer students.

This flexible course is taught to lawyers and experienced non-lawyer construction professionals over a series of intensive three-day sessions (from Thursday to Saturday) and is particularly well-suited for students based outside of London. It is also available for overseas students on both a full-time and part-time basis. 

You will have electronic access to the teaching and reference materials as well as physical access to the many specialist books and journals, which are held in the Maughan Library.

Course format and assessment

The organisation of the MSc is based on four taught modules with nine full days of teaching for each module. These will be divided into three-day blocks, usually Thursday/Friday/Saturday, but the second year will start with a Sunday/Monday/Tuesday three-day residential programme in Oxford. Students are expected to engage in 10-15 hours of self study per week.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations. 80 per cent of the course will be assessed through examination and 20 per cent will be assessed through coursework.
