TEACHING

Our teaching combines academic expertise with real-world experience so that your learning is practical, relevant and industry-focussed.  The programme is delivered by academics who are experts in their field but who also have worked in – and maintain strong links with – industry. You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, supplemented by a range of learning activities such as industry visits and guest speakers. The course includes a one week international study trip to develop your awareness of national and international business.

The course is taught in four modules of six week blocks.  Each module is made up of two days on campus for intensive study periods, with additional out-of-the-classroom activities such as company visits and guest speakers. Independent study and project work is completed in your own time with online support through the University's virtual learning environment, Blackboard.  

In the final semester, you will work on a Business Innovation Live Project, acting as a consultant to your own or an external organisation, providing advice and solutions for a real business problem.

COURSE SUMMARY

There is a large and growing industrial need for engineers to control and mitigate noise and its effects, providing a healthy job market for appropriately trained graduates. This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to work in environmental acoustics, whether in consultancy, local / central government or in research. 

This MSc is aimed at graduates of numerate science and technology disciplines, either fresh from undergraduate study or as Continual Professional Development for persons already in service.The University of Salford has a long history of research and teaching in environmental acoustics - by taking this course you will be joining a community of alumni who can be found at the heart of many leading organisations both in the UK and internationally.

You will study core topics including architectural acoustics, psychoacoustics, dynamics and vibration, computer modelling and measurement. Beyond this, the course provides specialist modules in environmental noise monitoring and noise control. Further specialisation is then developed in the Project module.

You will be based in the university’s internationally-renowned Acoustics Research Group. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework panel praised our outputs, saying that the Salford submission showed “particular strengths in acoustics”, and our industrial links led our REF impact case study to be singled out by the EPSRC and Royal Academy of Engineering for highlight the economic benefits of engineering and training.

This course offers a variety of flexible study formats, including full and part-time modes, either on campus or via distance learning. Those considering part-time study should bear in mind that the programme is intensive, and that generally, we advise that part-time means half time, i.e. you would need to allocate half the week to you studies ≈ 19 working hours.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course comprises eight 15 credit taught modules, followed by a 60 credit project module leading to the dissertation. For full-time students, the taught modules all take place in trimesters one and two, followed by the project module in trimester three. For part-time students, the taught modules are spread over trimesters one and two of two years, followed by the project module in year three.

TEACHING

The majority of teaching and learning takes place through tutorial and seminar groups. There is a strong focus on guided self-learning. Assessment is generally in the form of assignments, which improve problem solving and other skills as well as providing a strong background in the subject area. The ‘Measurement, Analysis and Assessment’ and ‘Environmental Noise Measurement’ modules also include practical group work.

All students benefit from the supply of a range of high-quality teaching materials, text books and software.  Interaction with students is face-to-face wherever practical, but we also use web-based learning support packages (databases of materials, discussion boards etc.) to support the cohorts. Our MSc Environmental Acoustics meets the needs of people wanting a career dealing with building design, noise and its control. With noise being a significant problem worldwide, there is increasing demand from companies wanting to employ graduates understanding acoustics. Building design and architectural acoustics needs specialist engineering consultants looking at room configurations and surface treatments, noise ingress and egress, sound reinforcement system design and so on. Many other businesses employ specialists in acoustics from Salford: Apple, Bentley and JLR to name a few. EMPLOYABILITY

Our MSc Audio Acoustics course is designed to train graduates to meet a growing demand for audio skills in industry, and also to enable employees to reach their full potential. This postgraduate course has been used as in-service training by a number of UK and global companies (e.g. mobile telecoms). While one naturally thinks of mobile phone design as belonging to 'telecommunications', there are considerable audio engineering challenges in designing good quality sound from the small transducers used in confined spaces, often in the presence of considerable background noise. Also, increasing markets exist for sophisticated audio systems in the home (smart speakers), at work (virtual and augmented environments) and in transport (car audio or ‘infotainment’).

The audio acoustics industry is diverse. It includes major firms with 'core' audio-related market share such as Philips, Sony, Dolby, B&O and KEF. Many other businesses employ specialists in acoustics from Salford: Apple, Bentley, JLR to name a few. Building design and architectural acoustics needs specialist engineering consultants looking at room configurations and surface treatments, noise ingress and egress, sound reinforcement system design and so on, and a very wide variety of companies (Arup Acoustics are one large example in our area) employ graduates from our courses. COURSE SUMMARY

On this course, you’ll gain practical, theoretical and creative experience of sound engineering, music production and audio technology.

You’ll explore the design, manipulation and production of audio across many platforms, using our state-of-the-art audio-post recording, radio and TV studios to study a mix of sound engineering and theory modules.

The aim of the course is to develop the skills that you’ll need to create and deliver professional audio, whilst under pinning these skills with a sound theoretical background.

This course entails both practical based and theory modules. The modules are delivered in the recording studios, the audio technology suite, audio post production suite and lecture theatres.

TEACHING

Teaching and learning involves a mix of lectures and practical sound engineering work, involving individual and group learning, There is an emphasis on motivated students' self-study.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment involves a mixture of practical work, report writing and project work. By the end of the course students will have built up a substantial portfolio of audio, video and new media work.

Assessment is approximately divided across the course as follows:

  • Practical work (30%)
  • Report/Assignment (35%)
  • Presentation (5%)
  • Dissertation - that may entail practical elements (30%)

FACILITIES

This degree is based in MediaCityUK,the new home for the BBC, ITV, Coronation Street and parts of the University of Salford. MediaCityUK is located at Salford Quays on the banks of Manchester's historic ship canal. The University has the first four floors of a new, purpose built facility that looks over the water to The Lowry theatre, Imperial War Museum North and the new Coronation Street set. ITV occupy the floors above us, with the three BBC buildings on one side of us and Peel Media Studios on the other.

A number of BBC departments are based at MediaCityUK, having moved from London, including BBC Breakfast, BBC Children's, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Future Media and Technology, BBC Learning, BBC Sport and BBC Academy. All of the BBC Manchester operations have also moved to MediaCityUK, including BBC Religion and Ethics, Current Affairs and the BBC Philharmonic.

  • Audio Post Production and Audio Suite - Mac-based suites that run a range of audio software, including Pro Tools, Reason, Cubase and Reaktor. The Post Production suite has a Digidesign Icon D-command desk running Pro Tools.
  • TV Studios - full professional specification studios. Studio A has separate vision and audio control rooms. Studio B allows for a full 3D virtual studio.
  • Radio Studios - two radio studios, including a small studio space.
  • Computer Suites - a range of Mac and PC based computer rooms for general computer work.

Our research is funded by research councils, government bodies, and industry. An exciting Industrial Masters by Research opportunity has arisen out of the ongoing relationship between the University of Salford and Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd.

Highlighted by the recent flooding issues in the UK, Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd believes that there is a need for improved weather detection and is looking to design a low-cost , wireless weather sensor and transmitter to enable early warning sensing and quantitative data for analysis. Dyer believes this data can be used for many applications e.g. flood warning/defenses; agricultural irrigation control; building automation; and the data collection for future modelling.

The aim of this Industrial Masters project is to produce a trialed and tested working prototype unit which Dyer Environmental can then look to submit for commercial development.

The collaboration

The School of Built Environment at the University of Salford has a strong track record of working with industry. The placement will be with the Applied Buildings and Energy Research Group, which is home to the Salford Energy House. Over the last 5 years we have developed detailed knowledge of sensors to understand both internal and external environments that are used in both laboratory and field environments.

Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd has worked closely with the University of Salford for the past 8 years, completing a 2.5 year KTP project and also sponsoring a PhD student. Dyer has also worked on various projects with the University of Salford’s Energy House. Now celebrating its 25th year, Dyer has worked within the ventilation and building automation sectors and is constantly striving for innovation. Dyer’s success is through customer relationships and flexibility – providing the most efficient and most effective solution for their customer’s needs. The KTP project succeeded in bringing a new product to market and is now sold globally.

Candidates:

The preferred candidates must have a good understanding of:
• A suitable undergraduate level award in electronics/electronics engineering
• The design/implementation and construction of analogue and digital electronic circuits.
• A good working knowledge of C & C++ for embedded microcontrollers, wireless/ mobile communications and PCB layout and design.
• Should have a working knowledge of meteorological or environmental sensors

Candidates are asked to provide a personal statement describing their background, skills, academic interests and their motivation for doing a Masters in no more than 2 sides of A4. This should include evidence of being able to work independently to a high standard, collaborate with others, and excellent writing skills.

The Successful candidate will work mainly on the premises of the University but will spend a significant amount of time at the Company Partner premises.

The two contributing universities - Salford and Keele - have considerable complementary research experience in the biology of parasites and the vectors which transmit them. This has led to the development of this pioneering joint masters degree, focusing on the molecular aspects of parasite infections and vector biology. It aims to provide you with a sound insight into the biology of parasites and their control.

This course will educate you in contemporary studies of research on immunological and molecular aspects of selected parasites and vector/parasite relationships. You will also gain research experience in parasitology and/or entomology. Individual research projects can be based in either of the two institutions, choosing a topical aspect of parasitology, or vector biology.

TEACHING

Teaching is delivered by research active staff from the University of Salford and Keele University. Teaching sessions are primarily based at Salford, though the facilities at Keele are also utilised with transport being provided for classes based at Keele.  

Teaching sessions include lectures, laboratory practicals, field work, tutorials, guest lectures and guided reading. Your Dissertation can be based at Salford or Keele.

Part-time students study Fundamentals of Parasitology and Molecular Biology of Parasites in year 1, Vector Biology and Control, and Research Skills (Parasitology) in year 2.  Students may wish to complete the Dissertation in year 2, or year 3 depending upon commitments.

ASSESSMENT

The Research Skills (Parasitology) and Dissertation modules are assessed by coursework. The remaining modules are assessed by coursework and examination.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates from this course have entered employment as research assistants or research laboratory technicians in pharmaceuticals, drug design and pesticide research. Other career paths have included pollution microbiologists with water authorities, and work in hospital laboratories investigating the haematology, molecular biology and immunology of infectious diseases.

This MSc also equips students for PhD research and former students have gone on to study at international universities that include our partner university in Toledo (USA). Several students at Toledo have now completed their PhD studies and have gained employment at US Ivy League Institutes (Harvard Medical School and Cornell).

Public Relations is one of the fastest growing professions in the UK, employing 62,000 people in 2015.

The importance of the digital economy, and the opportunities and challenges it presents, has been noted by a Lords Select Committee. Its report, entitled Make or Break: The UK’s Digital Future, emphasises the urgent need, at HE level, for industry input, so that graduates are learning job-relevant digital skills. This illustrates the employability value of a postgraduate programme in Public Relations and Digital Communications.

The programme would prepare graduates for work within PR and Digital Communication related industries and feeds into this skills gap in the PR and communications industries. However, it will also provide key transferable skills that are increasingly sought after in today’s job market.

This course will challenge the way that you think about health, using state-of-the-art public health principles and practice. The block and blend teaching methods starts with academic staff from the University of Salford delivering a week’s intensive teaching in Salford per module, giving you a thorough grounding in Evidence Based Public Health and Research Methods applied to international public health priorities, and an overview of the online facilities available to support the programme (e.g. library/blackboard/e-mail etc).

Active researchers in the field of evidence-based public health deliver the teaching, and the programme is designed to satisfy the updated Public Health Skills & Knowledge Framework (UKPHSKF, 2013) and aligns with the UK Faculty of Health’s nine key areas.

The face-to-face (Block) is followed by weekly online input (Blend) and study that builds towards your PG Certificate. DISTANCE LEARNING STUDY

A 30 credit taught module is studied in each semester for the first sixteen months.  Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role.  Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions.  In the final two semesters you undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits which is also delivered online and incorporates extensive tutor engagement and support.

TEACHING

To help you fit your studies around your work, the course is taught via distance learning. This takes the form of an online learning environment supplemented by constant support from experienced tutors.

During your studies, you’ll log on for weekly online tutorials, which will be led by tutors and provide the opportunity for interaction with your fellow students. Sessions are usually delivered at UK evening times, and these tutorials are archived in case you miss one. Learning is designed to equip you for the real-world problems that you are likely to meet in your job.

CONTACT TIME

Two hours online contact time, plus up to 15 hours self-directed study.

ASSESSMENT

You will be assessed through:

  • Written coursework (100%)
  • Continuous informal assessment by your tutors

CAREER PROSPECTS

On this course, you’ll gain the legal knowledge you’ll need to perform your current role more effectively or to move into a new role relating to construction law. Construction law and practice affects professionals throughout the construction industry. Graduates of this course have included surveyors, architects, engineers, planners, construction managers, financial managers, solicitors and lawyers.

LINKS WITH INDUSTRY

The full Masters award is accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), allowing exemption from their academic entry requirements.

The School of the Built Environment enjoys excellent links with the local, national and international construction industry.  This course meets the needs of the industry by providing formal postgraduate level education for built environment professionals in the vital and complex area of construction law.

Guest lecturers from industry with expertise in relevant areas are invited to give lectures throughout the duration of the course, enriching your learning experience.

COURSE SUMMARY

This course aims to provide a balance between theoretical, practical and biomedical skills, and develop your levels of critical enquiry. You will be encouraged to pursue creative approaches to contemporary research in biomedical science and communication through creative thinking, research methods,  computer  systems, case studies and practicals. You will evaluate how these various approaches can assist you in formulating your own experiments and research project, increasing your skill set and future employability.

This course has both full-time and part-time routes, comprising of three, 14-week semesters or five 14-week semesters, which you can take within one or three years respectively.

TEACHING

Teaching sessions include lectures, laboratory practicals, tutorials, guest lectures and guided reading.  Lectures provide a thorough theoretical basis for the course subjects and are delivered by internationally recognised, research active staff. A variety of other teaching approaches including tutorials, case studies, and workshops reinforce theoretical knowledge and facilitate the development of individual and group based research and transferable skills. 

Practical sessions demonstrate techniques and methods used in biomedicine, and provide an opportunity for you to learn complex experimental approaches and operate laboratory equipment. Guided reading will recommend key articles and other materials to help you learn. Guest expert seminars from clinicians and academics will provide insight into modern biomedical research. 

The research project will enable you to start your own research and be part of active, internationally recognised research teams, where you will practice the application of relevant biomedical techniques and skills valuable for your future employment in biomedical sector.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is by a combination of written examinations, oral presentations, coursework, laboratory reports and submission of the dissertation.

FACILITIES

We have newly refurbished and well-equipped teaching and research laboratories for practical work in molecular biology and biochemistry. State-of-the-art instrumentation includes cell culture facilities, FACS, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, FTIR and FTNMR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

CAREER PROSPECTS

At the University of Salford we aim to produce graduates who meet the needs of their future employers: highly skilled practitioners and excellent communicators who are seeking to push the boundaries in the rapidly growing biomedicine sector.

Many of our biomedical science graduates are employed in roles such as research assistants and research laboratory technicians, across various sectors including clinical and research laboratories and pharmaceutical and biotechnology organisations. Some have gone on to pursue the field of education, working as lecturers and teachers in universities and schools.

A number of our graduates choose to continue their education by pursing PhD studies, with areas of research including microbiology, parasitology, medicinal chemistry, cancer and cell biology- to name a few! Furthermore, graduates of this course have been accepted into medical schools as students on completion of this degree.

LINKS WITH INDUSTRY

Guest speakers provide a valuable contribution to the course, and bring a real world perspective to the academic delivery of the modules. The School of Environment and Life Sciences has a regular Postgraduate Research Seminar Series in which experts from outside the University share their knowledge and latest research findings. This Series not only augments scientific knowledge and progresses students’ understanding of effective science communication, it also allows for networking and the formation of valuable academic and industrial contacts.

FURTHER STUDY

There are over 50 fully research-active academic staff and a number of early career researchers engaged in a range of innovative research fields and in advancing the boundaries of theoretical investigation. Research in the School focuses on understanding disease processes and applying this information  to  understand  pathology and develop new diagnostics and treatments. Research areas include microbiology, parasitology, medicinal chemistry, rational drug design, cancer, molecular endocrinology, pharmacology, physiology, immunology, proteomics, molecular diagnostics and cell biology. The School offers  several  fully  funded Graduate Teaching Studentships for studying in these areas.

COURSE SUMMARY

Our course explores in both theoretical and practical terms current issues in journalism in the context of the digital revolution and media convergence.

  • It combines solid foundations of journalism practice with the latest developments in multimedia techniques, digital journalism and social media
  • It puts students through the fast-paced newsroom environment experience and offers opportunities to get engaged in specialisms such as foreign affairs correspondent, health and science reporter, business and finance writer or data journalist
  • It builds students’ professional portfolios, launches live brief media and journalism projects and embeds students in community programmes on work experience.

With guest lecturers from the BBC and other media organisations, practical workshops and newsdays in industry standard radio and TV studios, the syllabus is as close to real life in the world of digital media as one can get. The theory informs the practice to produce critical and autonomous professionals capable of working with confidence in any global media environment.

TEACHING

This course will be taught through lectures, presentations, seminars and workshops aimed at developing your understanding of the theory and practice of international and online journalism. There will be a number of visiting speakers and guest lecturers, and full use will be made of the growing links between our courses and the BBC and ITV through our base at MediaCityUK to facilitate joint projects and enable students to attend and participate in industry events.  

Student-led independent research, independent study, and project work such as newsdays, will be used alongside ‘problem-based’ and ‘task-based’ teaching, learning and assessment strategies. These will be integrated with an assessment strategy based on outcomes, students’ reflective self-assessments and learning plans. You will also undertake a period of work placement within the journalism community of practice, which will be supported by your module tutors. In certain cases, international students may be able to undertake this work placement in their home country.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment methods will include:

  • production exercises and portfolios of work
  • practical media projects
  • peer reviewing
  • essays
  • oral presentations by students
  • work-based learning diaries and reports
  • a dissertation or major project supported by substantial self-reflection.

FACILITIES

This course is delivered at the University’s state of the art facility at MediaCityUK, which has specialist journalism suites including newsrooms, TV studios and radio studios.

EMPLOYABILITY

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates can enter careers in various forms of journalism (print, broadcast or online) either in reporting or management roles, public relations, researchers, media analysts and advisers all either working in this country or abroad. Journalists could work as UK-based foreign correspondents travelling abroad or full-time in overseas postings.

LINKS WITH INDUSTRY

This course is based at MediaCityUK, with the BBC and ITV as neighbours, and our students benefit from the strong relationships that our journalism courses have developed with the regional press as well as local radio and TV stations over the years. This new course enables links to be established with journalism provision in universities around the world as well as international news organisations.

FURTHER STUDY

Graduates can undertake a postgraduate degree by research at MPhil (two years full-time) or PhD level (three years full-time). This could occur in any field of communications, journalism and media. At Salford the Communication, Cultural & Media Studies Research Centre and the International Media Research Centre contain a range of internationally leading academics able to supervise research degrees in their broad field.
