COURSE DETAILS

This course involves engagement with a number of ideas drawn from law, economics and the social and physical sciences which are of relevance to the theory and practice of environmental regulation and occupational health.

Modules have been designed to enable the development of the intellectual and analytical skills appropriate for health, safety and environment professionals in the 21st Century. Addressing existing and emerging challenges and reviewing contemporary management and regulatory systems designed to reduce risk, module content covers a broad curriculum providing you with in depth knowledge of the concepts presented.

A feature of this course is applied learning and an emphasis on authentic, experimental problem based learning ensuring that you will learn from experience while being supported in reviewing the progress of your own learning.

For the MSc, the full-time and part-time routes comprise three 14-week semesters or five 14-week semesters, which you can take within one and three years respectively.  

Within the full-time course three modules are compulsory with two studied in semester 1 and the remaining one in semester 2. The remaining module is optional and you can choose one module in semester 2 from the available options. During semester 3 you will complete a dissertation.

For part-time students the taught components spans two academic years each consisting of two semesters between September and May. Year 1 involves the study of two core modules. Year 2 involves the study of one core and one optional module. During your final year of the course you will complete a dissertation.

TEACHING

Teaching is delivered through lectures, tutorials and case studies, and simulated business projects are utilised to develop practical, observational and analytical skills. In addition, you will take part in field work and site visits and will have many opportunities to discuss and exchange your own professional experiences with the course team and invited specialist speakers. The Capstone Group Project will provide a simulated industrial environment where knowledge and skills gained from the taught components of the course can be consolidated and applied to solving a human factors and safety problem. 

The Applied Safety Assessment module will provide students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the Safety Assessment of Aircraft Systems module, in a practical scenario. In addition, the module aims to equip students with the ability to conduct a comprehensive safety assessment on an airframe whist working in a team, and to present the group work both orally and in a written report.

Individual project

Each MSc student is required to undertake an individual research project. The output of this project is a written report presented in the format of a scientific paper. The project aims to provide students with an opportunity to apply the technical and analytical skills taught during the course, in a practical way. The individual research project is a chance to study a specific subject or problem area in much greater depth and use some of the techniques learned during the course. You will be assigned a supervisor who will help to guide you in your research.

COURSE DETAILS

This course involves engagement with a number of ideas drawn from law, economics and the social and physical sciences which are of relevance to the theory and practice of occupational safety, health and well-being.  Modules address existing and emerging challenges and review contemporary management and regulatory systems designed to reduce risks.  

A feature of this course is applied learning and an emphasis on authentic, experimental problem based learning ensuring that students learn from their experiences while they are supported in reviewing the progress of their own learning.

For the MSc, the full-time and part-time routes comprise three 14-week semesters or five 14-week semesters, which you can take within one or three years respectively.

This course comprises four taught core modules complemented by a research dissertation.      

For part-time students, the taught components span two academic years each consisting of two semesters between September and May.  Year 1 involves the study of two core modules, delivered throughout the year.  Year 2 involves the study of one core module in semester one and one in semester two. During your third year of the course you will complete a dissertation.

TEACHING

This course is delivered through lectures and seminars, with students utilising case studies and completing assignments as the course progresses. We place a strong emphasis on students discussing and exchanging their own professional experiences with the course team and invited specialist speakers to encourage collaborative learning.   • Part III: Examinations are held at the end of the core modules
  • Part IV: Coursework for assessment. Coursework is required within six weeks of the onsite module.

Modules

We explore air safety management from a broad perspective so you will be exposed to areas as diverse as human resources, regulation, and crisis management. The academic framework has been created by the industry for the industry. This means you learn from the former British Airways human resources director in one module, and the industry's crisis management expert in safety or the chief executive officer of a major maintenance facility in another.

The course is based on completing the Induction Workshop plus eight modules over one to five years, which are taught over three-day periods. Teaching takes place across global locations including London, Dubai and Frankfurt.

Students also take on a project/dissertation in an air transport related subject, which is usually completed within six to twelve months. From developing new safety measures to social media marketing in the aviation world, students choose their own research focus and often use the project as a way into a new career.

Students who choose not to do the project, or are unable to complete the programme within the five years, receive a Postgraduate Certificate on successful completion of four modules, including two core modules, or a Postgraduate Diploma on successful completion of eight modules.

This is a professional programme recognised by the aviation industry and approved by the Royal Aeronautical Society.

NB: You can study either our MSc or PG Dip to achieve an Institution of Occupational Safety and Health accredited award. If you have already completed an IOSH-accredited PG Dip, this course offers you the chance to convert your qualification into an MSc by studying two additional research modules (see below). The duration for the course in this instance will be 1 year part-time, with fees charged pro-rata.
