The MA Dramatherapy programme at Roehampton offers unique training within the Ritual Theatre process of dramatherapy. Drawing heavily on the theatrical observations of Peter Brook and the experiments of Jerzy Grotowski, as well as anthropological notions of “rites of passage” and the importance of “myth”, the programmes offers a clearly structured developmental process for the clinical application of dramatherapy at various levels.

On this course, you will learn to facilitate an in-depth therapeutic process for a range of client groups, and devise therapeutic performances and workshops. You will also undertake an original piece of research into dramatherapy practice. The course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and leads to a nationally-recognised professional qualification.

The programme consists of three stages, which offers a clearly structured developmental process for the clinical application of dramatherapy. In Stage One, you will be introduced to basic theatre skills and use these creatively to work with established stories and characters. This progresses into an exploration of the personal identifications that we have with stories and myths, and an understanding of the deep foundations within many cultural traditions of using ritual, drama and performance for the enhancement of health. In Stage Two, the focus moves on to employing drama and theatre processes as vehicles for exploring our own inter-personal and internal ‘dramas’.

Stage Three is where you will conduct your own piece of practical investigation or research into the literature and theory-base of dramatherapy practice. The Dramatherapy programme will provide you with a broad range of skills enabling you to pursue your own research interests across a wide spectrum of dramatherapy practice and theory.

Content

You will study a range of topics including how to crafting therapeutic drama stories, understanding the individual and group process, Ritual Theatre, working with myths, paratheatrical explorations and the art of structure when working in dramatherapy.

Our research areas include individual dramatherapy in schizophrenia; perception and evaluation of therapeutic outcomes from therapist and client perspectives; the role of race, culture and gender; dramatherapy and “mentalisation” with borderline personality disorder and complex trauma; therapeutic scenarios and resistance; creativity and destructiveness; the dramatherapist; and the multidisciplinary team.

Alongside the experiential focus of the training, the programme also aims to develop the necessary understanding and reflective capacity required to practice as a professional dramatherapist. This is achieved through workshops, lecture series and clinical application seminars, as well as through assessed clinical placements.

The DTh is a professional doctorate programme in practical, ministry–focused theology. This programme offers strategic leadership training to senior level ministry personnel, seeking to broaden their applied theology in pastoral and missiological areas. There are two entry points for this programme. Stage 1A is for those with a good undergraduate degree and professional experience, and initially take a selection of preparatory taught modules. Stage 1B is for post-Masters applicants, and is an accelerated form of the course.

There is a wide range of areas in which students will develop their skills on this programme. You will enhance and apply your ability to handle written sources and empirical data, using appropriate advanced critical methods and controls. A further key skill is your ability to marshal coherent and effective arguments and communicate conclusions in oral and written form. The programme will moreover enable you to demonstrate a competent grasp of a range of technical skills arising within the discipline, including a range of approaches to textual historical, hermeneutical and cultural issues. Throughout the course, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of practical theology, alongside formal academic and practical skills.

Stage 1A: This introductory stage of the course offers a variety of taught modules on topics in contemporary ministry and religious studies taken from our Masters’ programmes in Christian Ministry and Theology and Religious Studies, respectively. Tutors will assist any student taking this phase of the course to make an appropriate selection of modules.

Stage 1B: In the first year of this stage, you will study advanced methods and approaches to practical theology, as well as undertaking a major literature review relevant to your proposed area of research. During this in–depth investigation, you will identify gaps or problems in the literature and identify one or more research questions around which you can structure your research project.

In the second year, you will conduct an in–depth study of a more focused topic, developed to the level of a publishable article, before going on to draft and present a full project proposal which must be approved before transition to the dissertation phase.

Stage 2: The final phase of the course will allow you to work closely with staff members with particular expertise in your chosen research area, developing an original and substantial investigation of potential significance both to academic inquiry and professional practice. The thesis, which will build upon your work in years one and two, will typically run to 50–60,000 words, and will be defended in a viva voce examination. Departmental research strengths include empirical, pastoral and public theology across a range of UK and global church traditions and mission contexts, including Roman Catholic, Anglican, Baptist and Pentecostal. We also have a particular strength in Black Majority Churches.

Dance movement psychotherapy is a relational process in which a client and therapist engage in an empathetic creative process using body movement and dance to assist the integration of emotional, cognitive, physical, social and spiritual aspects of self. We believe that focusing on the creative potential of individuals in a relationship creates a sound ethical basis for psychotherapeutic work.

You will be taught by leading experts who will equip you with the skills, experience, and confidence to work as a dance movement psychotherapist. This course is designed for experienced artists and professionals who have worked within a clinical setting and would like to build a rewarding career as an art psychotherapist.

You will be taught by leading experts who will equip you with the skills, experience, and confidence to work as an art psychotherapist in challenging, yet rewarding environments. Our graduating students are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Registered practitioners work in a variety of different settings including psychiatric hospitals, social services departments, special education, prisons and the voluntary sector.

Our comprehensive programme is divided into three areas covering theory, experiential learning and work placement experience. The theoretical aspect covers child developmental and psychodynamic principles alongside art therapy theory and Jungian analytical psychology. This perspective is located within the larger field of analytical psychotherapy and provides you with an in-depth theoretical underpinning that informs clinical practice.

A vital part of the programme is a supervised clinical placement which allows you to complete one hundred mandatory days of practice during your training. Placements are available in a variety of settings that include mental health (both in the NHS and other psychiatric hospitals and day centres), disabilities services or in hospitals or social services, special education, or a range of other settings.

The course is divided into three distinct areas; theory, which will develop your understanding as it relates to clinical practice, experiential learning where you will engage in art therapeutic processes to develop an understanding of the discipline from the inside while developing your identity as an artist, and lastly, a work placement. You will also get the opportunity to collaborate with the other students within the arts and play therapies in workshops and shared modules.

Our full-time course starts with an intensive week followed by two taught days, two further days of clinical placement and one day for studio practice per week. The part-time route starts with an intensive week followed by one day per week in University and a minimum of one further day on clinical placement. You will need to complete one hundred days of supervised clinical practice over the duration of the programme. Our programme is designed for graduates in psychology and the biological sciences, and professionals from a range of backgrounds including healthcare and counselling. You will gain a robust science-based qualification in the study of stress, dealing specifically with the mechanisms by which psychological stress can induce illnesses and examining issues of measurement, prevalence and management. This is especially pertinent today as you will study occupational stress and management for people in the workplace.

Taught by leading experts in the field, you will learn about how stress medicine and psychoneuroimmunology are growth areas in the discipline. In your first semester, you will develop a strong understanding how psychological states can affect physical wellbeing, in particular the role of stress in the development of various diseases, such as coronary heart disease and metabolic disorders including diabetes and mental illnesses. You will gain an in-depth understanding of the health care field and the current developments in stress management.

After the first semester, the emphasis will be on independent study, and you will undertake an in-depth piece of original research. You will learn to collect, combine and analyse data from a range of sources, making critical assessments as you progress. Hands-on experience gained in the recruitment of test group will be invaluable experience for your career in the healthcare.

The MA Education Studies programme is designed for education professionals who would like to further their knowledge and understanding of children and young people in society. You will be able to select from a wide range of modules in areas including special education needs, disability and inclusion and leadership and management in education, allowing you to shape the programme to your interests and career aspirations.

Schooling can be viewed as just one context within which education may take place; there are many other contexts in which educational approaches are used to work with children and young people. Some of these contexts include advisory work, early childhood practice, educational administration and policy, learning support and the third sector to enhance educational provision for children, families and communities. This MA will explore education across these different areas.

The programme will draw on the wider professional experiences that students may have of working in contexts where educational approaches are important. These may include experiences such as employment in youth work, sports’ coaching with young people, working for charities with children and young people to provide learning opportunities in this country or internationally.

This MA will cover critical social and educational theories and perspectives, as well as policy and practice relevant to global and local educational contexts. It will support you to achieve a critical awareness and understanding of education in its broadest sense as a process of human learning and development in and for human society.

You will benefit greatly from engaging with the insights, experiences and perspectives of your peers who may come from a diverse range of contexts, backgrounds and experiences. This MA allows you to engage with a range of topics, across different areas of education, with a particular focus on the critical theories of global policy and of the social relations of difference and power in educational contexts.

You will be introduced to the key concepts of race, ethnicity, class and gender in the Power in Education and Society module. You will be moved beyond theoretical knowledge to reach an informed position in relation to equality, diversity and social justice in education. Awareness will be raised of past and current international discourses in education, critically examining how they impact on children, young people, families and communities.

You will also analyse current debates on education policy and will learn to identify new policy sites and policy actors in the education arena, in the Key Concepts and Current Debates in Global Education Policy module.

The compulsory final dissertation module will give you the opportunity to select a topic of your choice and undertake a critical enquiry of the subject. You must also take a (required) research module, called Undertaking Social and Educational Research, which is designed to teach you about social and educational research and to prepare you for the dissertation.

You can select a further three modules from a range of options, including those from related MA programmes in Early Childhood Studies, SEN Disability & Inclusive Education and Education Leadership and Management. We regularly invite writers, who have previously included Emma Donoghue and Kazuo Ishiguru, to give guest lectures and workshops, as well as speakers from different sectors of the creative industries. The department has thriving partnerships with Wimbledon Bookfest and Barnes Children’s Literature Festival, as well as with local schools, providing you with the chance to volunteer or undertake paid work experience during your time at Roehampton. Our in-house publishing imprint, Fincham Press, means you could see your work published or be involved in publishing the work of your peers.

MA Creative Writing Fiction

You will be taught how to write fiction of the highest professional calibre by examining two primary forms, the short story and the novel, building a portfolio of fiction. The emphasis is on craft, technique and practical guidance, and you will engage with a variety of storytelling tools and models. You will be introduced to a wide range of approaches in short and long form fiction enabling you to develop your writing practice as well as thinking about your own social and cultural experiences and identities.

You will focus on the practice and theory of writing fiction for children, engaging with both visual narratives and young adult narratives. You will explore the historical and theoretical debates in Children’s Literature, and the working methodologies of established practicing writers, enabling you to contextualise your own creative practice. You will explore both traditional lyric poetry and alternative, innovative poetic practice through seminars, workshops and one to one tutorials. This degree provides a rigorous course that interrogates the literary, creative, social, cultural, political and historical contexts in the field of children's literature. You will explore landmark books such as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe or The Railway Children, alongside the contemporary innovations of Patrick Ness or Emily Gravett.

You will work with staff who have international reputations in areas such as philosophy in children's literature, popular fiction, adolescence and Young Adult, early children's books, and writing for young people. You will also benefit from a series of guest speakers, extra-curricular activities and field trips that will enhance your student experience and ensure you get the most out of your studies, and you will have the chance of working with Roehampton's Chancellor and renowned author Professor Dame Jacqueline Wilson.

As a Children's Literature student you will become a member of the National Centre for Research in Children's Literature (NCRCL), regarded as the premier institution for children's literature research in Britain. The NCRCL has close links with organisations that work to further the study and teaching of children's literature, including The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), Seven Stories (The National Centre for Children's Books) and Booktrust. The centre also hosts and co-organises an annual one-day British IBBY/NCRCL MA Conference and runs a regular NCRCL Conference, showcasing themes from members' research interests. Keynote speakers have included Michael Rosen, Matthew Grenby, Emer O'Sullivan, Neil Gaiman, and Julia Eccleshare.

Due to the reputation of our long-standing programme, our graduates are very attractive to employers, particularly publishers who have previously offered internships to our students and graduates. The University is the exclusive Creative Partner of Barnes Children's Literature Festival, London's largest event dedicated to children's writing. The partnership provides paid and voluntary work experience opportunities for students at the festival, as well as opportunities to attend events for free. We also have an on-going relationship with Hodder Children's Books and connections with other literary employers in the local community, including Wimbledon Bookfest, and Battersea Arts Centre.

Roehampton hosts a number of Children's' Literature collections in our library containing 6,000 critical, theoretical, bibliographical and reference works and approximately 40 specialist children's literature journals. We are also home to the Richmal Crompton Collection. This includes her personal library, editions and translations of her famous Just William stories and scripts including short stories and radio plays.

This stimulating programme allows for the exploration of a range of literary texts from medieval learning materials, through landmark books such as Treasure Island, The Tale of Peter Rabbit or The Eagle of the Ninth, to the contemporary innovations of Mark Haddon, Shaun Tan or Jackie Kay. You will examine the dynamic relationship between children's books, other media, and social constructions of childhood.

You will study a range of critical and theoretical approaches and learn about key ideas that have shaped literary criticism, particularly those that resonate with children's literature studies. You will pay special attention to archives, and what impact they have on textual culture, and will be trained in using them as a resource.

If you have the ambition to write for children, you will have the opportunity to take creative writing modules as part of your degree. MA students will complete the course by undertaking either a dissertation or creative dissertation. The dissertation is a supervised research project involving an in-depth study of an aspect of children's literature that interests you. For the creative dissertation, you will produce a creative portfolio that could include short stories, picturebook scripts, poems, or a novella, alongside a critical reflections of your work.

The key modules on this course revolve around you producing a high-level independent research project, which will prepare you for higher levels of research and study.

The course begins with a research methods module which will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of different approaches to research, allowing you to choose the correct method for your project, depending on your specific area of interest. You will study key philosophical questions as to the nature of science and knowledge, and develop a critical awareness of the principles and practice of qualitative and quantitative approaches and techniques. You will also be introduced to the management of ethical issues associated with collecting and analysing data on human participants.

Some of the techniques include modified ELISA’s, Real-Time PCR, Western Blot, isotope methodology for metabolism, 2-3D motion analysis using MaxTRAQ and Vicon, force analysis using Kistler force plates and isokinetic dynamometers, muscle ultrasound, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

You will automatically gain access to our research community in the Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre (SESRC) and Health Sciences Research Centre (HSRC). The research centres are active in researching diabetes, obesity, diseased and healthy metabolism, neuromuscular function, biomechanics in elite and pathological populations, environmental physiology, nutrition in athletic and chronic diseased populations, protein synthesis and muscle growth, sport & exercise psychology and performance and well-being.

Content

The key modules on this course revolve around you producing a high-level independent research project, which will prepare you for higher levels of research and study.

The course begins with a research methods module which will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of different approaches to research, allowing you to choose the correct method for your project, depending on your specific area of interest. You will study key philosophical questions as to the nature of science and knowledge, and develop a critical awareness of the principles and practice of qualitative and quantitative approaches and techniques. You will also be introduced to the management of ethical issues associated with collecting and analysing data on human participants.

You will also be guided on the development of your research proposal, and be invited to attend the Sport Science Seminars Series to frame your understanding of current sport-related research.

Other modules on the programme allow you to study more in-depth knowledge and gain relevant practical skill in biomechanics, psychology, and/or physiology that are invaluable for your dissertation project.

You will have the opportunity to work as a sports therapist, coach, personal trainer, teacher, lecturer or within sport development and administration. Graduates can also continue onto postgraduate study.
