This one year qualification will build your confidence in the classroom, your understanding of the wider role a teacher plays and provide you with all the subject knowledge to effectively teach your specialist subject to all age groups of secondary school children.

You will select a subject that you would like to specialise in and over the course of the year complete two modules in this subject. You will be introduced to a range of theories, practice, pedagogy, current research and literature relevant to that subject. All of your learning will ask you to reflect on your own experiences in your school placement with a consideration of current issues and research. These reflections will then allow you to review and adjust your teaching methods to improve your own practice.

You will undertake two blocks of school experience, two blocks of school experience, Foundation for 6 weeks in one school, and 12 weeks Development and Consolidation in another.

Fiction pathway

This pathway is ideal for people who are committed to producing fiction of the highest professional calibre. You will examine two primary forms: the short story and the novel to produce a portfolio of fiction. The emphasis is on craft, technique and practical guidance, and you will engage with a variety of storytelling tools and models. You will learn how to make your writing practice more effective, how to break bad habits and how to professionally assess your work in progress. 

Fiction for Young Readers pathway

On the Fiction for Young Readers pathway, you will focus on the practice and theory of writing fiction for children. You will read a wide range of theoretical texts exploring definitions and concepts of children’s literature concerning picture-books, fiction for young readers (6-12 years old) and texts for Young Adults (YAs), enabling you to contextualise your own creative practice. 

Poetry pathway

On the Poetry pathway, you will explore the contemporary context of poetry and poetics, with a special focus on writing formally innovative work. You will have the opportunity to engage with topics including poetry as process; the materiality of language; literary affiliations and schools of poetry; intertextuality and found text; the contemporary long poem; non-narrative poetry.

The compulsory module, Creative Contexts, introduces you to theoretical and research-based issues faced by creative writers, investigates “critical” writing as a form in its own right, and provides guidance on study skills.

Your seminars, workshops and tutorials will be complemented by guest lectures from industry specialists and off-site visits. MBA students have the opportunity to participate in a range of talks and activities designed to help them develop their personal and career management skills. Some past examples are described below.

Guest speaker sessions

John Lees, an internationally recognised career coach and careers writer, shared a number of insights into the changing job market and the skills individuals need to manage their career. Students were provided with a number of practical tools to help them identify their skills, focus on their career drivers, as well as think about their ideal job and the strategies needed to secure employment in a world where many jobs are never advertised.

Vicky Reeves, entrepreneur and Managing Director of the London-based web solutions company ChameleonNet, gave an inspiring and candid talk on the highs and lows of developing a successful business. She talked about how she has grown the company from a micro business to one that now employs around 30 people. She spoke about the skills that she has developed along the journey, how to go about getting the right advice and support, as well as providing some humorous stories to demonstrate the creative skills needed when running your own business.

Group projects

Students have worked on a number of group projects. One of these involved producing a design proposal for a dedicated postgraduate common room within the School. The objectives being to build a more cohesive postgraduate community; create a ‘third place’ to exchange ideas, share knowledge and maximise the resources of the University and thus improve the Roehampton learning experience among the postgraduate community. Students were given a budget to work within and had to present their proposals to a number of key decision makers across the University.

Beyond your MBA

The Roehampton MBA is fully recognised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Successful completion of the programme leads to eligibility for membership of the CMI and the potential to gain chartered manager status.

What is School Direct?

School Direct is a government-led initiative that seeks to place schools at the centre of Initial Teacher Education (ITE). Working with University of Roehampton, our partner schools take a leading role in recruiting trainee teachers and in designing and delivering the training programme. 

There are two possible routes if you are thinking of training via School Direct:

School Direct Training Programme (salaried)

This is open to high quality graduates with three or more years' professional experience.Applications are made on UCAS to individual schools or alliances of schools. The schools pay a salary based on that of an unqualified teacher but there is no government bursary. Trainees carry out training at Roehampton and within their school alliance.

School Direct Training Programme (tuition fee)

This route is open to all high quality graduates. The trainee can receive a bursary from the government at a level determined by the subject/phase of training and the trainee's degree class. Trainees carry out training at Roehampton and within their school alliance.

Structure

Both routes lead to a PGCE with 60 Masters credits on successful completion. There will be three assignments across the year, each leading to 20 Masters level credits. You will spend at least 120 days in school over the year long programme, and will also attend classes at Roehampton. Your main placement will be in the school that you have applied to and there will also be a shorter placement in another school which will add breadth to the experience.

You will be visited in school by a university tutor, and you will have a mentor in school. The training at Roehampton will enable you to reflect upon your practice within the broad context of educational theory so that you will feel equipped to teach in any school.

Learn how to optimise athlete performance and improve well-being and activity levels by studying the psychology behind sport at Roehampton. You will explore key factors that affect sports performance, well-being, and activity levels such as mental toughness, self-confidence, motivation, stress and anxiety, concentration, and the psychology of sport injury.

This innovative programme provides you with a thorough theoretical, conceptual and research informed grounding in the discipline of sport and exercise psychology. You will develop a strong scientific understanding of human behaviour and experience, and of the complex interactions between these. You will also enhance your understanding of relationships between the theoretical concepts and current techniques used in sport and exercise psychology assessment and support. This will include becoming familiar with the different types of approaches, assessment strategies, and psychological skills used by Applied Sport and Exercise Psychologists.

To support your professional development, this course will cover the idea of reflective practice, and codes of conduct. You will also develop an awareness and understanding of the issues, methodology and design of research within sport and exercise psychology, and gain research skills through the completion of a detailed, empirical research dissertation and benefit from the support of our staff’s wide areas of expertise.

This programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society to provide you with Stage 1 training in preparation for your professional career in Sport and Exercise Psychology. In the module ‘Approaches to Psychological Support’ you will initially be introduced to the varied approaches within sport and exercise psychology, and undertake an in-depth review of the differences of the theories, looking at them in practice through a selection of case studies. Other modules, such as ‘Application of Psychological Support’, will allow you to link theory to practice, and students will have the opportunity to develop consultancy skills under the guidance/supervision of a BPS Chartered/HPCP registered member of staff.

Further modules will provide important knowledge with respect to sport performance as well as well-being and physical activity promotion. Within the ‘Psychology of Sport and Performance’ module you will gain a critical appreciation for various social processes and individual differences that influence performance. The ‘Psychology of Physical Activity, Health and Injury’ module will explore the determinants and outcomes of physical activity and inactivity and provide students with important insights towards preventing, treating and managing certain health conditions.

You will also gain insightful knowledge of contemporary issues concerning professional practice within sport psychology. The module ‘Professional Practice in Sport Psychology’ will explore the importance of ethics and reflection within your practice, whilst also exploring the challenges and opportunities that you may face when working with various athlete populations (e.g., team sport athletes, injured athletes, and young athletes).

Course summary

The DTh is a professional doctorate programme in practical, ministry–focused theology. This programme offers strategic leadership training to senior level ministry personnel, seeking to broaden their applied theology in pastoral and missiological areas. The programme focuses on using research to develop theological practice.

There are two entry points for this programme. Stage 1A is for those with a good undergraduate degree and professional experience, and initially take a selection of preparatory taught modules. The second route, Stage 1B is for post-Masters applicants, and is an accelerated form of the course.

Regardless of entry point this programme will help those already engaged in Christian Ministry to develop the advanced research, evaluative and reflective skills necessary to further their professional and career profile. Students will prepare for more senior level, national or international roles, as leaders, advisors or consultants in ministry-related fields. As a practitioner of Practical Theology, this course will encourage you to reflect technically and theologically on your ministerial practice, and on the application of scholarship and research to a range of ministerial contexts.

Throughout the course, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of practical theology, alongside formal academic and practical skills.

Stage 1A: This introductory stage of the course offers a variety of taught modules on topics in contemporary ministry and religious studies taken from our Masters’ programmes in Christian Ministry and Theology and Religious Studies, respectively. Tutors will assist any student taking this phase of the course to make an appropriate selection of modules.

Stage 1B: In the first year of this stage, you will study advanced methods and approaches to practical theology, as well as undertaking a major literature review relevant to your proposed area of research. During this in–depth investigation, you will identify gaps or problems in the literature and identify one or more research questions around which you can structure your research project.

In the second year, you will conduct an in–depth study of a more focused topic, developed to the level of a publishable article, before going on to draft and present a full project proposal which must be approved before transition to the dissertation phase.

Stage 2: The final phase of the course will allow you to work closely with staff members with particular expertise in your chosen research area, developing an original and substantial investigation of potential significance both to academic inquiry and professional practice. The thesis, which will build upon your work in years one and two, will typically run to 50–60,000 words, and will be defended in a viva voce examination. Departmental research strengths include empirical, pastoral and public theology across a range of UK and global church traditions and mission contexts, including Roman Catholic, Anglican, Baptist and Pentecostal. We also have a particular strength in Black Majority Churches.

The University is the exclusive Creative Partner of Barnes Children’s Literature Festival, London’s largest event dedicated to children’s writing. The partnership provides paid and voluntary work experience opportunities for students at the festival, as well as opportunities to attend events for free. 

Roehampton also hosts a number of Children’s' Literature collections in our library containing 3,000 critical, theoretical, bibliographical and reference works and approximately 40 specialist children's literature journals. We are also home to the Richmal Crompton Collection. This stimulating programme allows for the exploration of a range of literary texts from medieval learning materials, through landmark books such as Treasure IslandThe Tale of Peter Rabbit or The Eagle of the Ninth, to the contemporary innovations of Mark Haddon, Shaun Tan or Jackie Kay.

Although this is a literature programme, study is not limited to children’s books. You will also examine the relationship (both historical and ongoing) between children’s books and social constructions of childhood. 

The creative writing modules, which currently include ‘Writing for a Child Audience’ and ‘Creative Dissertation’, represent exciting additions to the programme, recognising the fact that many of our students have ambitions to write for children.

MA students will complete the course by undertaking either a dissertation or creative dissertation. The dissertation is a supervised research project involving an in-depth study of an aspect of children’s literature that interests you. For the creative dissertation, you will produce a creative portfolio that could include short stories, picturebook scripts, poems, or a novella, alongside a critical reflections of your work.

This course covers the theoretical and the practical aspects of specialised translation. In the compulsory module ‘Technical and Scientific Translation’ you will practice your skills in translating highly specialised documents into your chosen language. During the course you will also address the main theoretical issues shaping translation today and understand how these theories relate to the practice of translation.

IT skills are central to a translator's work so the compulsory module ‘Translation Tools’ will familiarise you with some of the translation tools you will be using in your professional life. This one year qualification will build your confidence in the classroom, your understanding of the wider role a teacher plays and provide you with the subject knowledge to effectively teach primary school children. 

You will select an age group that you would like to focus on, and each of your modules will be tailored to the academic requirements or the different ways of teaching children of that particular age. All of your learning will ask you to reflect on your own experiences in your school placement with a consideration of current issues and research. These reflections will then allow you to review and adjust your teaching methods to improve your own practice. 

Three modules are covered during the year: Professional Studies, The Core Curriculum and The Wider Curriculum. Each is assessed through 100% attendance, completion of directed tasks and a written assignment. The Professional Studies assignment requires a critical analysis of how children learn focusing on a current priority in teaching (for example SEND, EAL, behaviour for learning) in light of the learning experiences of a child. In the Core Curriculum, the focus will be on English, Maths or Science and you will plan a sequence of lessons which you will deliver relating to a current area of research in your subject. A written essay will then provide a rationale for your lessons and an evaluation of the learning which took place. The Wider Curriculum assessment allows you to focus on one foundation subject and plan a medium-term plan which you will then write a rationale for. 

You will undertake two blocks of assessed school experience, one in the autumn term which is approximately seven weeks, and the second in the spring term lasting around thirteen weeks. During the placements, you will progress from participant observer, via support teacher and sharing teacher, to lead teacher.

This course provides industry-relevant and specialist journalism training. Based in one of our multimedia newsrooms, designed to give you the experience of working in a fully functioning and fast-paced environment, you’ll learn how to write different types of stories, design digital content and produce audiovisual journalism.

This MA has a specific emphasis on the practice of journalism and develops the skills you'll need for employment in the journalism or creative industries.

You will learn how to write advanced news and features, gain an understanding of the scope of the laws affecting journalists and develop the editorial, interpersonal and self-management skills needed to work within the media industry. You'll examine the journalism business, have the opportunity to specialise in magazine journalism and study shorthand.

You'll also gain practical skills such as audio and video production and photo editing. In your final term you'll choose between either an academic dissertation or a journalism project route – which allows you to work in a team to produce a magazine.

We have a number of dedicated multimedia newsrooms, fitted with Mac computers, a video suite and a viewing room containing industry-standard software, which are designed to give you the experience of working in a fast-paced environment. You'll be taught by a journalism team who have worked for the Daily Mail, the Guardian, Financial Times, the BBC and Reuters.

Carrying out work placements is an important part of this course and you'll need to complete a minimum of six weeks' industry work experience. Not only will you be putting the skills you've learnt on the course into practice, you'll learn valuable new ones, build a strong CV and make vital industry contacts.

There are visits to journalism and media organisations, such as the BBC, as well as special seminars and workshops held by industry professionals. Roehampton has links with local media organisations such as Haymarket Media Group. In the autumn term, you will learn about the legal and ethical aspects of journalism, covering concepts such as libel, confidentiality, copyright and privacy. You will also explore media regulation. You will develop your advanced news and feature writing skills, as well as learning how to sub-edit a range of copy for print and online. Plus, you'll also produce your own journalism portfolio.

In the spring term, you'll study social media and data journalism, and explore content creation and the distribution of news via social media. In Multimedia Journalism, you will focus on content production within the digital media. In the final term, you'll choose between a dissertation and a journalism project. This two-year, full-time programme is taught in the UK, Sweden and Spain and will prepare you for an international career in the protection of human rights.

Our programme has a strong emphasis on professional development, and how human rights principles can be put into practice through policy and active engagement in these issues. This programme is designed for postgraduates who want to make a significant contribution to the human rights agenda internationally with civil society organisations, governments and the public and private sector. You will be exposed to legal, political, sociological, and anthropological approaches to human rights promotion and protection in a globalised world.

The Crucible Centre for Human Rights Research is a multidisciplinary research centre conducting research on a range of contemporary human rights, migration and related issues. You will benefit from the number of regular workshops and seminars that the centre holds as well as being a part of major EU-funded projects and activities.

Content

Mainstreamed throughout the programme is an attention to human rights practice in the areas of gender, childhood and religion. You will gain a thorough understanding of human rights issues through using an academic multi-disciplinary approach and the application of human rights theory and practice in relation to law, sociology, social anthropology, international relations, civil society and political science. You will be able to articulate human rights issues from a variety of perspectives, to apply theory from different fields and disciplines, to discuss and assess the strengths and weaknesses of different perspectives and critically evaluate how these perspectives can be used by different actors, agencies and stakeholders.

You will start off studying at the Göteborgs Universitet (Göteborg, Sweden) from August to January, and then from February to July at the Universidad de Deusto (Bilbao, Spain), and from September to December here at Roehampton. From December to June, you’ll have the opportunity to study in the most appropriate country to your dissertation subject area.

You will study organisational analysis to ensure that the organisations through which you pursue human rights work are better managed. This element of the programme combines class and placement learning, which is central to the programme. The modules in this course will help you develop the analytical skills and expertise in human rights perspectives, contexts organisations, policy-making and practice.

Course summary

This course is ideal if you wish to pursue media, communications and cultural inquiry in order to develop a media-based career.

On this course you will cover all aspects of media, communications and cultural studies, from exploring cultural theories and concepts such as Marxism, post-Marxism, feminism, psychoanalysis, post-colonialism and globalisation, to the developments and debates around media and cultural industries such as TV, film, print media and the internet. You will analyse the politics of identity in the context of media and cultural representations, especially in the changing media and web landscape.

You’ll be taught by staff who have strong research profiles with publications in the area of cultural studies theory, culture and politics, tabloid culture, reality television, psychoanalysis, television history and industry, the globalisation of media and culture, contemporary trends in the television industry, as well as travel writing. 

You will become a member of the Centre for Research in Film and Audiovisual Cultures (CRFAC), giving you access to a diverse programme of research seminars, symposia and special events organised in collaboration with institutions such as the British Film Institute. Your studies are complemented by visiting lectures given by media and cultural industry professionals such as film makers and scholars from other institutions.

Content

On the course, you will gain an in depth understanding of the role of the media in everyday life, and of its relation to culture and formations of identity and subjectivity. 

You will be introduced to, and evaluate, a number of influential and important communication theories and concepts associated with the public sphere, globalisation, promotional culture, media organisations and new media, as well as discourse analysis. 

You will engage with the politics of identity in the context of media and cultural representations and explore debates around social difference through a consideration of various defining conditions including gender, class, ethnicity, history, nationality, sexuality, taste and consumer choices.

You will also explore the representation of social reality and the social self in both mass and new media. By focusing on a range of non-fiction formats including reality television, ‘unscripted’ video, user-generated content and the development of the social web, you will address established and newer scholarly debates concerning ‘truth telling’, confession, surveillance and the production of knowledge about the self and its place in the world. 

You’ll end the year by undertaking a dissertation or research project which will give you the opportunity to deepen your research skills and knowledge about a topic of particular interest to you.
