Skills are developed through creating a broader understanding of financial firm risk-taking, accountability, governance.

The emphasis is on a deep analysis of mainstream and critical authorship. We will challenge current and past thinking on the role of financial institutions and markets. The programme particularly encourages students to examine regulatory structures and concepts in the context of recent and past financial crises.

Students will build the skills and knowledge needed to gain an understanding of financial reform processes and their consequences for markets around the world. Rigorous classroom teaching coupled with extensive reading provides students with a sound theoretical basis. An understanding of substantive legal issues is also developed.

Contributions by industry and regulatory experts introduces students to the nuances of real world application of theoretical constructs. Practical case studies, current legal positions and interactive student discussions or presentations are used in most lectures. In addition legal, academic, practitioner and regulatory input is gained through specialist guest lectures and visits as per the ability of the year-group.

Students will be resident and undertake full-time study in the UK. Under both, the 9 and 12-month programmes students take compulsory and/or elective modules in Part 2.

The 12 month option involves taking an elective 20 credit module between July and August, which would also mean a 20 credit reduction in the number of taught modules taken in the spring term.

The financial services sector has an ever-expanding need for graduates trained in the fundamentals of compliance, governance and regulation. This increasing demand has been fuelled by implementation of a number and rules and laws, including the EU Market Abuse Directive, Markets in Financial Instruments (MiFID), global standards such as Basel II, and the FSA and US regulators’ focus on principles-based regulation, all of which require significant in-house compliance resources.

With recent explosive growth in capital markets such as China,India, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, combined with the increasing complexity of financial products and a growing sophistication on the part of investors and market participants, there are immense challenges facing institutions, compliance professionals within them and regulators.

Professional accreditation

CISI Diploma

The ICMA Centre is a Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (CISI) Centre of Excellence. Centres of Excellence are a select group of UK universities, recognised by the CISI as offering leadership in academic education on financial markets. Students who are on a financially-related masters course recognised by the CISI are eligible for exemptions and membership. 

ICMA Centre students who register and successfully complete two CISI Diploma in Capital Markets modules (Securities and Bonds & Fixed Interest Markets) are eligible for an exemption from the third module (Financial Markets).

ICMA Fixed Income Certificate

To obtain the requisite knowledge to pass the rigorous FIC exam, students are required to take the ICMA Centre Fixed Income Cash and Derivatives Markets module at Part 2. In order to receive the FIC certificate, students will need to register and pass the FIC exam through ICMA.

Students gain core competencies in risk analysis and have the opportunity to tailor the programme to their own interests and needs through the wide variety of options available.

About this degree

Students will be educated to an advanced level in programming and computing and will gain mathematical, statistical and computational modelling skills. They will have a clear appreciation of different types of risk within the industry, and of the managerial and psychological issues related to risk control.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules (60 credits), four optional modules (60 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits).

Students undertake modelling, research and data analysis which takes place over the summer placement. This forms the basis of the 10,000-word dissertation.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and project work. Modules are assessed by written papers and/or coursework. The research project is assessed by a written report and (optional) oral examination.

Placement

Students undertake a summer work placement in an industry environment organised by the department.

This module gives you an overview of design research methods and how they are used in professional practice. It enables you to construct the kind of research questions, hypotheses and methodologies that underpin innovative design, as you develop a more autonomous position in the process of critical inquiry.

Semesters one and two, 60 credits

The Studio module spans two projects – ‘Behaviours’ and ’Matters’. The Behaviours project takes place in semester one and provides you with a theoretical context for the studio-based investigation, analysis and generation of essential design criteria that shape patterns of consumption.

In semester two, you undertake the Matters project, a studio-based experience that places emphasis on materiality and the nature of physical experience as mediated through the design, production and physical manifestation of things.

This module takes the form of a series of seminars, workshops and discussion groups where specialist practitioners, writers, researchers, manufacturers and theorists present their work on sustainability. It covers themes including consumer motivation, behaviour, phenomenology, deep ecology, temporality, consciousness, emotional durability, materiality, defuturing and experience-authoring.

• Master
Semester three, 60 credits

The Master project represents the culmination of your work throughout the course. It allows you to apply all of the experiences and skills that you have accumulated, as you choose an area of sustainable design that you want to pursue in detail.

You work is structured by an individually defined 'statement of intent' that provides the framework through which you will be assessed. This process enables you to explore distinctive areas of expertise with a unique approach to the ubiquitous issues of sustainability and design.

The final body of master work must be developed through practices relevant to you and your statement of intent. These might include the development and production of design proposals, a written thesis, a documentary, an ad campaign, an article for a leading publication, a touring exhibition or a combination of the above.

Our studio

From 2016, students will work in the new Masters Centre, which provides studio, seminar and tutorial space for all postgraduate students in the School of Architecture and Design.

Students on MA Sustainable Design will have dedicated studio space with access to workshop and digital model making facilities. More specialised materials and making requirements can be supported on an individual basis with colleagues in engineering, crafts and arts.

Due to the great demand in Ireland for the professional qualification as Associate (ACIS) of the ICSA, Ulster University offers this course with face-to-face tuition to help you achieve such a demanding professional and academic qualification. This course leads to graduate membership of ICSA , the international membership and qualifying body for chartered secretaries and other governance professionals. The course has been developed in close collaboration with the Institute and is fully accredited by them.

Due to its success rate for graduate recruitment and links with employers, this course was awarded the PostGrad Ireland Postgraduate Course of the Year – Business in 2012. Graduates from the course go on to work for organisations such as Deloitte, KPMG, Eversheds, Citi and PWC. Jordanstown Campus

The full-time MSc Management and Corporate Governance course is usually taught on two days a week, with lectures taking place during the afternoon and evening. As well as weekly lectures some subjects are taught on a "block" basis - meaning that the modules are taught over three days; one module in each of semesters 1 and 2 is taught in this way.

The part-time MSc Management and Corporate Governance course is usually taught over 2 years. In semesters 1 and 2 the lectures take place during the afternoon and evening of one day per week. As well as these weekly lectures, three modules are taught on a "block" basis - meaning that the modules are taught over three days.

Students completing the Master's qualification will be required to take three modules in semester 3, these are usually taught on a 3 day "block" basis between May and July.

Marino Institute, Dublin

Students study the course over a 2 - 3 year period. Students begin by working towards the Postgraduate Diploma from Ulster University which includes GradICSA. This is taught in Dublin at the Marino Institute. Students then have the option to continue on to the Master's part of the course.

Modules are taught over 4 days. Some modules are taught over 2 consecutive Fridays and Saturdays, others are delivered over 3 weekdays with a follow up day later on in the month. Sample timetables are available by emailing .

The MSc is normally studied over one year full-time or two years part-time.

The course is divided into taught modules of 20 credits and a Master’s project of 60 credits. Students complete 60 credits for Postgraduate Certificate, 120 credits for Postgraduate Diploma and 180 credits for the full MSc. Each credit represents 10 notional hours of student learning and assessment.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

The Finance and Financial Law MSc is designed to integrate learning in financial theory, markets and institutions, combined with legal study in complementary and specialist areas of financial law. You will gain a deeper understanding of the legal issues and an ability to apply knowledge and skills in professional capacities in a variety of roles in the global financial services industry.

This course is delivered by an experienced inter-faculty teaching team drawn from the Westminster Business School and the Westminster Law School.

The course has an international dimension - you will study in the heart of the capital at our Marylebone campus minutes away from the major global financial and legal centres of the world.

Course content

Study will cover a range of contemporary topics, namely: financial markets and institutions, financial products, regulation and compliance, financial and legal risk management and financial crime.

In addition, the focus on policy matters related to financial regulation will equip you with the skills required to conduct deeper analyses and to undertake research in this multi-disciplinary area of study.

To enable students to build the common key core skills and knowledge base, all students are expected to undergo the Westminster Business School’s pre-course induction process, covering the fundamentals of finance and commercial law.
