Skills are developed through creating a broader understanding of financial firm risk-taking, accountability, governance.

The emphasis is on a deep analysis of mainstream and critical authorship. We will challenge current and past thinking on the role of financial institutions and markets. The programme particularly encourages students to examine regulatory structures and concepts in the context of recent and past financial crises.

Students will build the skills and knowledge needed to gain an understanding of financial reform processes and their consequences for markets around the world. Rigorous classroom teaching coupled with extensive reading provides students with a sound theoretical basis. An understanding of substantive legal issues is also developed.

Contributions by industry and regulatory experts introduces students to the nuances of real world application of theoretical constructs. Practical case studies, current legal positions and interactive student discussions or presentations are used in most lectures. In addition legal, academic, practitioner and regulatory input is gained through specialist guest lectures and visits as per the ability of the year-group.

EMPLOYABILITY

The financial services sector has an ever-expanding need for graduates trained in the fundamentals of compliance, governance and regulation. This increasing demand has been fuelled by implementation of a number and rules and laws, including the EU Market Abuse Directive, Markets in Financial Instruments (MiFID), global standards such as Basel II, and the FSA and US regulators’ focus on principles-based regulation, all of which require significant in-house compliance resources.

With recent explosive growth in capital markets such as China,India, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, combined with the increasing complexity of financial products and a growing sophistication on the part of investors and market participants, there are immense challenges facing institutions, compliance professionals within them and regulators.

Our graduates are in a very strong position to build successful careers in the compliance or legal divisions of investment banks, fund managers and hedge funds, retail banking institutions and other market participants.

Health and safety is an integral and important part of any organisation. Whether you work as an operations manager, office manager, engineer or technician, you will be involved with ensuring a safe working environment for everyone. We will develop your knowledge of how different organisations use varying levels of safety procedures and you will assess their impact on the whole company.

By investigating an organisation as a whole, you will gain a broad knowledge of other departments such as marketing, sales and human resources, and how they are affected by the procedures and processes you implement. You will also enhance your understanding of the technical and human aspects of health and safety, learning to identify whether issues were caused by machine malfunctions or misjudgement by humans.

Our course also offers you the chance to look at past and present case studies to understand any errors made, what caused the mistakes and the preventative measures that should be put in place. These could range from dealing with harmful substances within a chemical facility, exposed wires and trip hazards in a busy office, to safety measures for maintenance work on rail tracks.

You can study either our MSc or PG Dip to achieve an Institution of Occupational Safety and Health accredited award. If you have already completed our PG Dip, this course offers you the chance to convert your qualification into an MSc by studying two additional research modules (see below).

How can knowledge of trading global markets affect risk management and compliance? Will firms that have trading arms executing orders in global markets need specialist trader analytics to succeed in today's business world?

Alongside banks, a growing number of both financial firms (e.g. hedge funds) and non-financial firms (e.g. utilities) have trading arms which execute orders in the markets and deal on behalf of either the firm or outside clients. Therefore, knowledge of trading global markets is a prerequisite for your career in trading, risk management or compliance.

On this course, we prepare you for a successful career in finance and financial services by covering in-depth finance, statistical modelling and trading skills. You master areas including:
-Trading strategies
-Risk and money management

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.
