Learning & teaching

This course is delivered entirely online.
You’re provided with open learning materials including reading and case studies. Each module is made up of online workshops and you’ll be supported by at least two one-hour online tutorials during each 10-week module. Email and telephone contact will also be available during this period.

Assessment

The course modules are assessed by a range of methods including essay writing, projects and on-line tests.
Modules 1 and 2 require a mix of assessments. You’ll create an online portfolio of assessments (50%) and one written essay (50%).
Module 3 is assessed through a written research proposal (15%) and written project of around 9,000 words (95%).
If you’re just taking an individual module you’re not required to take part in these assessments but you must participate in the on-line open discussions.

COURSE SUMMARY

This course is ideal if you are looking to boost your skills and qualifications in human resource management and development.  

You will develop your understanding of HR policy and practice in a variety of contexts, with an emphasis on strategy, reward and development.  Our HR programmes are industry-led, delivered by experts and focussed on practical experience.  The programme includes a Business Innovation Project, based on your own or another organisation, which culminates in a report which includes recommendations to employers.

This is an Advanced Level programme, recognised by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) as providing the necessary knowledge to apply for Chartered Membership. On graduation, you will be eligible to receive an Advanced Level 7 Diploma from CIPD.

COURSE DETAILS

The programme is intended for those who currently work in the field of human resource management and development and who require professional accreditation and advanced formal qualifications.  The aims are:

  • to improve the effectiveness of HR managers within their organisations
  • to develop a critical awareness of the potential of human resources to contribute to organisational performance and development
  • to provide a basis from which to develop and enhance your career.

You will be equipped with the knowledge and specialist skills to effectively select, motivate, manage and reward employees to maximise their potential and the potential of their respective organisations. You will also become a reflective practitioner and enhance your learning and development capabilities.

COURSE STRUCTURE

There are 4 30-credit modules, 3 of which will be taken in Year 1 (1 per semester) and the fourth taken in Semester 1 of Year 2:

1) Strategic International Business Management (CIPD)

2) Employment Relations and Law

3) Resourcing, Learning and Talent Management

4) Project Management, Leadership and Skills: Planning and Control

The order in which the 4 30-credit modules will run will vary from one academic year to the next.

Following the fourth module, you will work on the Business Innovation Project (Management Research Report) in the final 2 semesters of Year 2.  There are two options available depending on level of qualification you are studying for.

TEACHING

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials using a wide range of learning activities.  You will make substantial use of interactive learning through the University's Virtual Learning Environment, and will access a wide range of academic journals and texts which are available in both paper and electronic formats. Tutorials allow you to reflect on lecture materials and benefit from group work and discussion with your peers.

Each module is delivered two evenings per week for six weeks.  Taught over two years, the course is made up of 4 x 30 credit modules and finishes with a 60 credit Business Innovation Project which you can base around your own or another organisation.  The project is completed in your own time and offers an opportunity for you to apply your knowledge and skills in a more flexible environment.

ASSESSMENT

During your course, a range of assessment techniques will be used. Types of assessment include: essays, assignments, exams, multiple-choice tests, online tests, group reports, portfolio work and practical skills.

Assessment

The overall strategy for this course is to achieve a balance between the assessment of academic understanding and evaluation, and the assessment of competences and skills that are valuable in organisations.

Your learning will be enabled through a variety of formative and summative assessments. For example there will be exams, assignments and presentations, with key emphases on continuous learning with each piece of work. You will also be expected to write a reflective account of what has been learned during each assignment and how this can be applied in the future. Underpinning each assessment consideration must be made to ethics, diversity and to legal issues.

You will be assessed summatively via: both short and long written reports and papers (from 1500 to 3000 words); presentations, management research report (8,000 words) and the development of a reflective skills portfolio. The MSc International Human Resource Management is both academically challenging, with input from world-leading academics, and practically focused, giving you the opportunity to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills needed for a successful career in International Human Resource Management.

Central to this is the idea of the international HR manager who combines specialist technical knowledge with a strong understanding of the social, political and ethical context of business in a globalised world.

In this world, in addition to technical expertise in particular HR functions, managers need to understand national differences and how to manage in cross-cultural environments. They need to be aware of how to organise processes and projects across national boundaries. They need to be able to analyse the impact of different national institutional contexts on firm structures, innovation processes and work organisation. They need to be aware of the broader social and environmental consequences of their actions and the way in which national and international structures of soft and hard law impact on their policies and procedures. They need to be sensitive to changing social expectations of the responsibilities of firms and the way in which new internet based technologies make companies more visible and accountable to global social movements as well as more locally based coalitions of citizens and consumers. They need to be able to reflect on how to be an HR manager in such complex contexts, and to adapt creatively and effectively to challenges in a fast-moving environment.

The course will look at the management of people including theories of management and organisation, motivation, groups and team working, internal structures and decision-making processes, and leadership. The management of the various activities associated with the practice of HRM, namely recruitment and selection, training and development, reward management employment law, equality and diversity will also be examined.

The course will also explore the nature of the organisation, the strategy and structure of multinational firms in different sectors (such as manufacturing, transport and professional services) will be analysed in cross-national settings in order to understand national differences and how to manage in cross-cultural environments.

Structure

This course is taught from September to June and you will study a range of both compulsory core modules and a range of options. Following on from the taught stage you will undertake a project with support from their supervisor.

The Autumn Semester consists of three core modules, plus ONE optional module.

During the Spring Semester, you will undertake two core modules, plus TWO optional modules.

International Human Resource Management Project:

Upon successful completion of the taught modules you will undertake the International Human Resource Management Project.

The purpose of the project is to provide you with the opportunity to test the applicability of your new learning while under close supervision. It introduces you to the methodology of research, the systematic analysis of ideas, the problems of data collection and the presentation of ideas in a clear way. A further aim is to enable you to apply the knowledge, understanding, methodologies and skills learnt in the taught modules to individual independent research under academic supervision.

It also requires reflection on the implications for professional practice from an ethical, professional and continuous professional development standpoint.

Methods of teaching

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

In a lecture, the lecturer will mainly be giving an overview of a particular aspect of the module content (as well as opportunities for you to ask questions and be reflective), while in classes and workshops you will have an opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding in the topic

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutor at three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Postgraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback in relation to examinations following all examination periods and you will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but, across your degree scheme as a whole, you can expect a mixture of exams, coursework, essays, practical work, presentations, and individual and group projects.

Benefits of MSc

The MSc course has all of the benefits of the PgDip – including CIPD accreditation – plus a research methods and dissertation module.

The dissertation involves the identification and refinement of an HR problem, undertaking an in-depth literature review, the collection of primary data, and the analysis and evaluation of this data so as to produce a set of implementable and/or secondary recommendations.

Modules

Students studying for the MSc HRM and PgDip HRM will be required to complete the 4 core units in your first year. In your second year you will take Research Methods plus one core unit and two electives. Each year of the programme features a residential weekend as an integral part of the overall course. The dissertation (MSc only) and the Management Research Report (PgDip only) provide you with the opportunity to link theory and practice within an organisational context.

The taught modules (15 credits) units are assessed by a mixture of individual assignments, group presentations and by examination at the end of some modules.

Accreditation

The programme is approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).This means on successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma or MSc you'll become an Associate member of the CIPD. In addition the programme provides you with the knowledge to upgrade to either Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow levels of professional membership, providing you meet the respective criteria as set by the CIPD.

Employability

The programme is designed for professionals or line managers who are working in the field of Human Resource Management or Development. Students who have successfully completed the course have found it has enabled them to take on additional responsibilities and/ or move onto more senior positions within HR and/or Management.

COURSE SUMMARY

This course is ideal if you want to specialise in human resource management.  

You will develop your understanding of HRM practices across a variety of organisational settings, with an emphasis on strategic, international and comparative subject matter.

This is an Advanced Level programme, recognised by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development as providing the necessary knowledge to apply for Chartered Membership. On graduation you will also receive an Advanced Level Certificate from CIPD.

Full-time students automatically gain entrance to the CIPD National conference and Exhibition in Manchester - the leading HRM conference in the UK.  You may also choose to take advantage a blended distance learning opportunity, available through our official partner - Robert Kennedy College - in Zurich, Switzerland.

COURSE DETAILS

The programme is block delivered and there are six entry points per year.

This course is designed for graduates with a background in business or business related studies, who wish to specialise in HRM with a view to pursuing a career as an HRM practitioner either as a functional specialist or in other areas of management which involves significant people management responsibilities.  On completion you will have developed as a manager of people by learning specialist knowledge and the application of theory and practice in the main specialist areas which comprise HRM.

You will be equipped with the knowledge and specialist skills to effectively select, motivate, manage and reward employees to maximise their potential and the potential of their respective organisations. You will also become a reflective practitioner and enhance your learning and development capabilities.

TEACHING

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials using a wide range of learning activities.

The course is currently delivered in four blocks of three-day intensive study periods, followed by independent study and online support through the University’s virtual learning environment, Blackboard. Each module is taken and assessed over a six week block. 

From September 2017, this delivery format will change. Students will continue to study a single module for a 6 week period. Face to face teaching will be delivered on campus for two half days each week. In addition, you will attend the taught element of the Business Innovation Programme each Wednesday afternoon during the 6 week blocks, with independent study completed in your own time through Blackboard.  Individual student timetables will be provided during induction week.

Substantial use is made of distance learning through the University's Virtual Learning Environment, and a wide range of academic journals and texts are available in both paper and electronic formats. Tutorials allow you to reflect on lecture materials and benefit from discussion and group work.

The dissertation element offers a further opportunity for you to apply your knowledge and skills in a more flexible environment.

ASSESSMENT

During your course, a range of assessment techniques will be used. Types of assessment include: essays, assignments, exams, multiple-choice tests, online tests, group reports and portfolio work. The weighting between exams and coursework varies between modules, but exams still play a major role.

You will gain a highly regarded formal qualification, as well as personal and organisational management skills that will enhance your career prospects.
