Learning & teaching

This course is delivered entirely online.
You’re provided with open learning materials including reading and case studies. Each module is made up of online workshops and you’ll be supported by at least two one-hour online tutorials during each 10-week module. Email and telephone contact will also be available during this period.

Assessment

The course modules are assessed by a range of methods including essay writing, projects and on-line tests.
Modules 1 and 2 require a mix of assessments. You’ll create an online portfolio of assessments (50%) and one written essay (50%).
Module 3 is assessed through a written research proposal (15%) and written project of around 9,000 words (95%).
If you’re just taking an individual module you’re not required to take part in these assessments but you must participate in the on-line open discussions.

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials using a wide range of learning activities.

Various approaches are offered to meet the needs of both full and part-time students. The course is delivered to part-time students over two three-day intensive blocks in the evenings, meaning each module will be completed within a six-week period.

The overall strategy for this course is to achieve a balance between the assessment of academic understanding and evaluation, and the assessment of competences and skills that are valuable in organisations.

Your learning will be enabled through a variety of formative and summative assessments. For example there will be exams, assignments and presentations, with key emphases on continuous learning with each piece of work. You will also be expected to write a reflective account of what has been learned during each assignment and how this can be applied in the future. Teaching and learning

Throughout the course you will attend practical workshops to develop your essential HR skills. This practical applied learning helps you to develop the skills and understand the challenges of HR in practice and improve your employment prospects. Teaching staff at the Business School are researchers and/or come from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed using a range of different methods including examinations, assignments, individual or group reports and group presentations. This range of assessments will help you to develop the analytical and presentational that employers within different organisations look for.

Specialist facilities

The Business School Postgraduate Centre at has a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, well equipped seminar rooms and a postgraduate lounge and private study area.

The Wheatley Campus library provides specialist business resources including more than 1,000 sets of UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, postgraduate MA, MBA, MSc and PhD theses in business and management and examination papers.

Field trips

- International Business in Practice: Study Trip
This study trip provides you with experience of global business, with a focus on the economy of the country visited. There is no credit towards your master's degree from this module but it will give you practical insight. You will meet global business leaders, receive presentations from academic experts and tour company facilities. You will develop an understanding of the state and development of the economy and how leading companies operate in a variety of industries, looking at the impact of social, cultural and historical influences.

Having successfully completed the assessment (pass/fail), this module will appear on your transcripts, which will enhance your employment potential. Please note that the number of students who can join this field trip is limited and the cost is not included in the course fees.

Free language courses are available to all full-time postgraduate students. These include:

Careers

Graduates from the MSc in Human Resource Management course have pursued a number of different career routes. Many of these are in HR roles, across a wide spectrum of organisations, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), large global commercial organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Some students develop academic careers and others pursue consultancy opportunities or general management.

What will you study?
