Marketing is about creating, communicating and delivering exchanges of value between an organisation and its customers that satisfy the customer, the organisation and society at large. The MSc Marketing course offers students from a wide variety of educational and cultural backgrounds the opportunity to understand and combine academic concepts and practice-related marketing issues. This unique combination of academic and practice allows for students to be well-positioned for future success in the field of marketing.
As part of the highly flexible method of learning, the following degree pathways are offered, all of which provide a route to an MSc, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate qualification. All students will register for the MSc course in Marketing in the first instance and be given the opportunity to change degree pathway at the end of the first semester.

CIM Dual Award
The MSc Marketing course at Stirling was one of the first in the country to be accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). Upon the successful completion of the MSc Marketing Course, two modules will be waived, meaning students need only complete the remaining two modules (versus completing all four required modules) in order to gain a Professional Diploma in Marketing. MSc Marketing with Retail

The MSc Marketing with Retail is a specialist, 12-month full-time taught postgraduate course. The MSc Marketing with Retail provides students with the opportunity to acquire and extend their knowledge and expertise in this sector. The retail sector is a major employer throughout the world and one which requires a sound skill set in order to be able to manage profitable interactions with suppliers and consumers. All students will register for the MSc course in Marketing in the first instance and be given the opportunity to change degree pathway at the end of the first semester.
The course is modular, so the credits awarded at the end of each assessed module can be accumulated towards a postgraduate qualification. Students of Marketing with Retail study three core topics in the Autumn Semester before deciding on their final course of study. In the Spring Semester MSc Marketing with Retail students have to apply this knowledge through a project undertaken for an external company and through an appreciation of Contemporary Issues in Marketing. To specialise in Retail students must also complete the modules on Retail Marketing and Marketing and the Supply Chain and undertake an individual dissertation or group research project in a field relevant to the Retail sector.

If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:
- IELTS: 6.0 with 5.5 minimum in each skill
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Grade C
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): Grade C

Delivery and assessment

The taught modules of the MSc course are delivered using a variety of methods, for example, lectures, tutorials, case studies, role playing, computer simulations, fieldwork exercises, site visits, guest speakers and company projects. Much of the assessment is continuous and may include research reports, essays, briefings, management reports, case analyses, debates, literature reviews, marketing communication plans, poster sessions and presentations. Assessed work is often conducted in groups, as developing teamwork and communication skills are seen as important.

COURSE CONTENT

The first year of the Master is a fulltime year in Grenoble or London.
The program covers four key areas of study for Marketers, each of the 19 modules follow a logical connection to the one before.

The content of the program may be adapted from year to year to take into account the needs of industry. Class attendance is compulsory.

Integrative Marketing Case Study

Using an existing business, the “Live Business Case” will provide the students with the opportunity to pull together all the aspects of the program. Students will analyze a marketing problem in the Company and use their skills and knowledge to solve issues and propose solutions. This takes place in small groups and in a limited time. Assessment for the case study will be based on a group assignment with a group presentation to the Company.

At the end of the one-year full time part of the program, each student will be required to complete a Final Management Project of approximately 20,000 words in length, under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study. This will be business oriented and coherent with your program's objectives. A student may choose to write his/her project on a topic grounded in his/her internship experience.

The programme aims to provide a high quality, vocational education which is intellectually rigorous and up-to-date, as well as relevant to the needs of existing and future managers, executives and other professionals in international retail marketing.

In addition to subject-specific knowledge, the programmes aim to develop generic management skills necessary to be effective in todays’ challenging business environment.

This module is design to cater to students individual learning needs, whether that be focused on research into the fashion industry or towards research and academic skills required for Masters level study. Students will consider their own personal experience and future career aspirations along with a focus on creative digital visualisation skills and industry standard software.

- Fashion Retail Interactions
This module will explore the landscape of fashion retail to encourage students to engage with contextual understanding, looking into areas such as consumer behaviour, sales management, visual merchandising, buying, multi-channel retailing and marketing communication. Students can choose an area of specialism to produce a visual research book, demonstrating their skills in research and analysis.

- Fashion Retail Space and Place
This module will encourage innovative thinking as students question what retail is and what it could be in the future. Students will use industry standard 3D visualisation software to design their own retail space that will be focused on a specific market and consumer base, considering the store environment, use of multi-platform integration across all levels of fashion retail.

- Fashion Brand Design and Communication
This module will critically explore the nature of branding, with both theoretical understanding and creative and practical application. Students will be encouraged to select an existing fashion brand or retailer, researching fully utilising both primary and secondary research methods, before proposing an opportunity for re-branding or re-positioning of the brand. Students will utilise create software to produce promotional materials relating to their ‘new’ brand concept. This module is designed to run as a live brief with a brand.

- Strategic Fashion Retail Innovation
Students will be asked to think globally, exploring the impact of wider factors on the design of fashion retail strategies for innovation. Students will consider a consumer group in a specific marketplace and produce a strategy for international expansion. This strategy will be accompanied by creative promotional material to enhance students research and analytical skills, as well as their visual communication.

The final semester of the degree will include a 60-credit project, which will develop through one of the above modules. The final major project enables students to focus on their area of expertise, designing their own major project brief (with help from lecturers) that will showcase their advance fashion retail knowledge and design skills. Students will be guided on an appropriate project, before working with tutors to create an outcome that can be used as a discussion point in future interviews or exhibitions. Alternatively, students can choose an extended work placement, or reflection on their own work practice, to utilise work placed learning into their MA Fashion Retail.

The digital age has revolutionised the way that audiences and consumers interact with and consume content. Film, TV, music, books and computer games are now bought and sold over a dizzying array of platforms, from traditional cinematic exhibition to premium-priced SVOD pre-releases of movies in your living room, and from boxed computer discs from retailers to free-to-play app games on your mobile phone.

This course will take participants through the process of taking a piece of content (a game, TV show or a feature film) to its market – examining how the sales, marketing, distribution and retail (or exhibition) side of each industry works from “nose to tail”. The course will also look at the emergence of new and innovative forms of media that merge traditional media with digital markets (including Youtubers, branded content among others) and the commercial side of each. By the end of the course students will be expected to have an unrivalled overview of the three key sectors and be able to move between them with ease, making them both very employable executives and marketers who can utilise multi-disciplinary skills to innovate in their chosen sector.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Students will undertake two four-week work placements - one in the first year and one in the second year of the course at media companies, to gain experience both of the cut and thrust of a product launch (whether it is a film, game or television show) and to make contacts. These work placements will be researched by students, and agreed by tutors in advance. These placements aim to challenge and augment the participant’s skillset, and at least one must be taken within a company outside the participant’s favoured media industry.

MARKET ATTENDANCE

Students will also attend one key market in each sector – the Berlin Film Festival in February; MIPCOM in October and EGX in September. These are opportunities to see the scale of the worldwide market and to meet potential collaborates and business partners.

STUDENT FINAL PROJECTS

Students’ final projects will be a live proposal for, and implementation of, an ambitious sales, marketing and distribution strategy for a film or computer game. Participants are expected to either bring a project for consideration by tutors (for example an indie game or independent feature film), or will be placed within a company to initiate and run a fully worked-through strategy for the delivery of a product to consumers. This will be augmented with a self-reflective report on the successes and failures of the campaign.

Course participants will have full access to the NFTS’ optional creative stimulus strands, including: Passport to Cinema (weekly screenings of classic and pre-release films in the state-of-the-art campus cinema or at the BFI Southbank); and NFTS Masterclasses - major creative figures from film, television and games screening their work and discussing with students in the campus cinema. Recent speakers include David Fincher (Director, Seven, Gone Girl), Andy Wilman (Executive Producer, Top Gear), Graham Linehan (The IT Crowd, Father Ted) and Hamish Hamilton (Director, Super Bowl XLVIII).

The programme involves six taught modules, including four core modules (Consumer Behaviour, Marketing Management, Marketing Research and Marketing Strategy and planning) followed by a number of specialist modules such as Retail Marketing, Strategic Brand Management, Strategic Environmental Sustainability and Marketing Communications. You will also undertake a substantial research dissertation on a marketing topic of your choice. Recent dissertations have included investigations in areas such as interactive marketing, marketing communications and retail marketing.

For this programme, you do not need previous formal education in marketing. The programme is recognised by the ESRC for research training and is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Programme details:

The 12-month full-time programme begins at the end of September. The first nine months are spent developing knowledge through six or seven taught modules, comprising four compulsory modules and two/three specialist modules chosen from a list of options designed to give you flexibility.

A 24 month MSc Marketing programme is also available where students first take a nine month general business qualification, Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (GDBA) if they do not meet the 12 month course requirements. If a satisfactory performance on this GDBA is achieved students can then progress to the 12-month MSc Marketing programme.
