The travel and tourism industry is more aware than ever of the need to adopt responsible business practices that improve the quality of life within local communities and conserve the environment and cultures of destinations. This course meets the demand to develop managers with the ability to implement responsible tourism strategies within marketing, operations and product development.

You will explore domestic and international tourism understanding that responsible principles are as applicable to the Yorkshire Dales as they are to The Gambia. In addition to developing your subject knowledge, you will learn how to plan, implement and evaluate responsible tourism polices and practices. You will look at real issues and solutions and develop the management skills you need to operate effectively at a strategic level within government, non-governmental and private sectors.

We are also developing our course to increase our links to industry and are in the process of setting up partnerships with industry to link your modules more closely to real life examples. This course is also the only responsible tourism course in the world certified by the UNWTO TedQual programme. It is taught by staff with first-hand experience in tourism management, research and consultancy who will share their global expertise with you.

To support your studies, you will be assigned a personal industry mentor. Our mentors are experienced tourism professionals and have all graduated from this masters course, so they understand your journey. Your mentor could assist you in a number of possible ways, including discussing career pursuits, giving advice on work placements, helping to improve your CV and providing tips on assignments, course material and work / life balance. We have over 20 mentors from areas as diverse as the Gambia Travel Foundation Programme, TUI UK & Ireland and VisitEngland, so we will attempt to match you with an appropriate mentor.

Our teaching is grounded in industry consultancy and research. The quality of our research is evident in the outstanding results achieved in the Research Assessment Exercise completed in 2014 in which Leeds Beckett came second in the country for sport and exercise science, leisure and tourism.

Staff teaching this course have played a leading role in the responsible tourism and hospitality movement through research and development work with the industry and government which enables our students to also play an important role in this sector. Dr Xavier Font is a key advisor to the UNWTO and other agencies, frequently undertaking research for the EU, the processes and findings of which are shared with his students. Lucy McCombes is a certified Travelife auditor and Dr Simon Woodward is chair of the ICOMOS-UK Cultural Tourism Committee and a Trustee of the Landscape Research Centre.

Core Modules

Responsible Tourism Theory & Practice (distance learning only) (20 credits)
This introductory module to the course introduces the concept of responsible tourism and ensures that all students have a common knowledge base about tourism assets and the tourism industry. (This module is not available to full-time students)

Tourism Destination Management: Planning & Policy (20 credits)
This module focuses on the strategies available for the management of a destination, including evaluating the role of public sector agencies and local communities in managing tourism and exploring how the public and private sector stakeholders can work together with civil society to achieve the objectives of responsible tourism management.

Masters Research Methods (20 credits)
This module involves learning the skills needed to research and assess responsible tourism initiatives and make realistic recommendations for enhancements.

Masters Research Project (40 credits)
This final module allows you to apply your research skills to an organisation, destination or initiative of your choice and apply your project management and business research skills to evaluating and improving the initiative, grounded on your theoretical understanding of responsible tourism.

Before joining our University, Davina worked for a tourism consultancy focussing on best practice in destination management. Her experience is broad and she has worked for a range of clients including key strategic organisations such as UNWTO, UNEP and VisitEngland. Davina studied her PhD in New Zealand and her current interests include responsible tourist behaviour and destination management.

The Erasmus Mundus Master on Wine Tourism Innovation (WINTOUR) offers a truly integrated study programme which combines the expertise in Tourism and Oenology of three universities and regions: Rovira i Virgili University (URV, Spain), University of Bordeaux (UB, France), and University of Porto (UP, Portugal). These universities are located in highly attractive touristic areas, recognised with the label of human heritage by UNESCO, and with a long tradition on wine, producing speciality wines, such as sparkling, fortified, aged red and sweet wines. The training programme is clearly multi-disciplinary and also multisectorial.

The WINTOUR programme is structured in 120 ECTS divided in two years and 4 semesters. The first 3 semesters are taught each in one University (URV, UB and finally UP), and the last semester is devoted to the final internship which is developed in one of the associated partners' facilities, mostly from the non-academic sector. Thus, students have a common track of 90 ECTS, and a final professional Internship for the development of the Master Thesis of 30 ECTS, where students have to develop a project related to the skills acquired.

The teaching programme includes modules on Wine Tourism and Marketing, Wine Making (mostly focused in sparkling, aged, sweet and fortified wines), Wine heritage, and three different types of internships (on winemaking, marketing, and oenotourism), with the active participation of the non-academic partners in the student training.

Student Profile

The WINTOUR programme is aimed at preparing broadly trained and highly adaptable and qualified professionals in the tourism and wine industries in order to promote innovative wine tourism developments which will generate added value through the increased income and recognition of this sector. The programme covers the absence of a new profession that requires multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial knowledge and training, while increasing their understanding of wine making and tourism management. High-quality practical training in entrepreneurship and company management is provided by involving the students in internships in the non-academic sector.

The Master's course in International Tourism and Aviation Management seeks to bring together the theories, concepts and practices to develop critical understandings of a managerial career within either the tourism or aviation industry. The MA offers an opportunity to enhance research skills to advance employability in the tourism or aviation industry. It is offered as a one year full-time and two year part-time course.

During the course you will adopt an interdisciplinary approach to the study of tourism and aviation management, by drawing upon international case study material, to understand the global operations of both the tourism and aviation sectors. The course seeks to exploit synergies between the tourism and aviation industries to critically inspect the management-related issues, which is a key strength of the course structure. The MA is taught by an experienced team of academics, all with a background in either tourism and/or aviation management. Many of these staff are extensively published and are asked to speak at events and conferences throughout the world.

There are several practice based features of the course, in addition to research for the dissertation. These may include guest speakers from industry, use of industry relevant briefs, field work, trips and visits, which can be used to inform teaching, learning and assessment.

Format

MA International Tourism and Aviation Management adopts a blended teaching and learning strategy. This includes the use of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and self-managed personal research. The use of information and communications technology together with electronic learning support materials and e-books are central to the delivery of the curriculum. A feature of our learning approach is the use of industry-based briefs.

Assessment

Assessments feature both formative (in-course) and summative (final) assessment. Normally a module comprises of no more than two or three pieces of work. No formal examinations are set. The course embraces the use of essays, reports, presentations, case studies, portfolios, audits, in-class tests, project plans, industry-based briefs, business games and work-place simulation (to name but a few). Traditionally the teaching, learning and assessment strategy of the school at Masters level has been to engage with a wide variety of assessment techniques reflecting the broad abilities of different students to meet the assessment outcomes of the various modules.

The Master's programme in International Tourism and Aviation Management with Internship seeks to prepare aspiring individuals for a managerial career within either the tourism or aviation industry. The course offers the opportunity to interpret and assess trends and changing management practices within the tourism and aviation industry. In doing so it widens career opportunities and the possibility of movement between the two sectors. The mode of study is full-time - studied over 18 months and the internship component is completed after all taught modules have been passed.

You will be expected to undertake a total of 1,200 hours of planned full-time work experience or internship in a tourism or aviation organisation. Normally this will equate to 30 weeks spent with your internship employer completing various work related roles and tasks and completing the various guided learning activities required as part of your programme. The University does not guarantee an internship and you will need to be proactive in finding what might be considered a suitable intern position. To prepare you for the internship one assessed module: Organisational Behaviour in Theory and Practice is incorporated within the course.

Format

MA International Tourism and Aviation Management with Internship adopts a blended teaching and learning strategy. This includes the use of lectures, tutorials, seminars, self-managed personal research and learning through work experience. The use of information and communications technology together with electronic learning support materials and e-books are central to the delivery of the curriculum. A feature of our learning approach is the use of industry-based briefs.

Assessment

Assessments feature both formative (in-course) and summative (final) assessment. Normally a module comprises of no more than two or three pieces of work. No formal examinations are set. The course embraces the use of essays, reports, presentations, case studies, portfolios, audits, in-class tests, project plans, industry-based briefs, business games and work-place simulation (to name but a few). Traditionally the teaching, learning and assessment strategy of the school at Masters level has been to engage with a wide variety of assessment techniques reflecting the broad abilities of different students to meet the assessment outcomes of the various modules.

Tourism and aviation students traditionally find themselves working in a variety of different sectors of the industry, anywhere in the world, including:

The Master of Ecotourism provides you with the knowledge and skills needed to participate in the growing ecotourism (or nature-based) industry. A distinctive feature of the course is that it is delivered in Albany, in the south-west of Western Australia, an area that is known to be one of the most environmentally diverse, culturally rich regions with an impressive range of natural outdoor recreational opportunities and strong tourism industry partners. The environmental and social impacts of ecotourism are explored through selected case studies.

Course description, features and facilities

The Master of Ecotourism has a strong emphasis on field work, industry case studies and the development of partnerships with the tourism industry. Graduates will have the ability to manage existing ecotourism enterprises sustainably, as well as design and implement new ventures. Graduates will also be culturally aware and have knowledge of environmental law and policy pertinent to ecotourism.

While the standard timeframe for completion of this degree is two years (full time), if you have previously completed an undergraduate degree in a cognate (related) area it may be possible to complete within 1.5 years.

The course offers a focussed, advanced learning experience that will enhance career choices. You must complete all core units. This degree also provides the flexibility to choose from a range of units to complement your specific interests.

The MA Sports Coaching degree is the new programme developed to support the strategic objectives outlined in the UK Coaching Framework. Sports Coach UK have provided the strategy for the UK to be considered the number one coaching system in the World by 2016. Our challenge is to support this and produce postgraduates with a high degree of knowledge and understanding so that they can challenge and innovate their own coaching practice. This will require knowledge of leadership, communication, pedagogy, allied sport sciences and relevant management principles. Students will be afforded the opportunity to work in an environment relevant to their developmental needs.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The School of Sport, Tourism and The Outdoors has strong links with a large number of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, public and private sector sports providers and grassroots sports clubs. We regularly invite guest speakers from industry to speak to students within the modules on this course.

This represents a valuable opportunity for students to meet potential employers and learn about life in the sports industry. The school is also responsible the delivery for the PGDip in Elite Coaching (UKCC Level 4 Coach Education: Pentium Group). As both ICAP and PGDip are central to the school there are a number of opportunities to share current research and practice from within the elite coaching environment.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

All face-to-face delivery will use several types of media to encourage learning. The main vehicles will be through seminars, debates, practical workshops and problem-based learning. This will be supported with some electronic learning activities and resources. Those who choose the blended mode of delivery will be taught through a combination of interactive electronic learning activities and face-to-face delivery on residential blocks (for example weekends).

The use of guest speakers on the course is designed to facilitate networking opportunities for students to meet with potential employers.

Every effort will be made to apply theory to practice, and in some cases, practice to theory. There will be a requirement for independent learning throughout the programme, culminating in the Dissertation.

There are no examinations on this course. Every effort has been made to ensure that assessments are relevant to the coaching sector. For example, coach reports, case study reports, debates, critical reflections and presentations are used throughout the programme.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The full-time MA in Sports Coaching course is a 12 month programme comprising three parts. The first two parts are the taught element and the final part is the research element. The taught element focuses on key aspects of sports coaching. In addition, students will have the opportunity to engage in consultancy or sport-specific placement. For full-time students, the taught element is normally completed over a nine month period starting in October. Part-time students will normally attend on a one day per week basis and complete the taught element in two years. Students who complete the taught element of the programme, in part or in its entirety, may graduate with either a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Sports Coaching.

Students wishing to complete the MA in Sports Coaching must complete the research element. The research element comprises a dissertation. Full-time students will normally complete this in the three months that follow the taught element, whilst part-time students complete this during the course of an academic session.

An integral part of the course is the Consultancy Project, which is an opportunity for students to work on a “live” sports coaching / coaching science project for an external client, agreed using a project specification negotiated between the student, client and academic supervisor.
