Teaching methods

The programme is taught through a combination of innovative lectures, seminars, small group teaching, face-to-face tutorials, workshops, online teaching and individual supervision. Training is flexible and teaching is provided in blocks of two full days, which allows students to organise their time effectively to manage the demands of clinical practice and academic study.

Different assessment methods are used, including coursework and practicals. Coursework includes essays, short pieces of writing work, blogs, critical review, whereas practicals include oral presentations.

In addition, the University has an excellent reputation in blended learning and is supported by the Learning and Teaching Innovation Centre (LTIC). The MSc programme team collaborate with the LTIC and benefit from their expertise in incorporating effective learning, teaching and assessment methods into their modules.

The course is supported by a dedicated Information Manager and the two state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centres, which provide information, computing, study and coursework support. Programme Modules, Mode of Study and Awards

The MSc Clinical Research consists of six compulsory modules. As well as these modules, the students will have the opportunity to acquire their Good Clinical Practice certificate and complete the NHS Leadership “Edward Jenner” online programme during their studies.

The MSc Clinical Research is offered on a one year full-time basis or on a part-time basis from two years to a maximum of five years. Individual modules can also be taken.

The programme leads to the following awards:
- MSc Clinical Research – 180 credits required to be passed at level 7 and includes all six modules
- Postgraduate Diploma in Research Methodologies (Clinical Research) - 120 credits required to be passed at level 7 and includes all the modules, except the Clinical Research Dissertation module
- Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methodologies (Clinical Research) - 60 credits required to be passed at level 7 and includes the module Evidence Based Practice and either Qualitative Research Methods or Quantitative Research Methods modules

Course details

You’ll cover the whole spectrum of psychological research skills and most research methods used by psychologists, and have the opportunity to study methods that are particularly relevant to you. We aim to equip you with high-level research skills and give you the opportunity to apply these skills in original psychological research. Early in the programme, you’ll begin a substantial independent piece of research and continue this throughout the year. Special emphasis is placed on practical research skills and communication - these are integrated in project work to achieve professional standards of psychological research. If you study full time the programme lasts one year starting in late September and involves attendance for at least two days a week over two 12-week teaching periods. Successful completion of the taught modules leads to the postgraduate diploma award. If you want to study part time please discuss your requirements with the Programme Director.

For more than ten years now, the programme has been recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as providing the generic and specific research training required by students in receipt of ESRC studentship awards.

Since 2011, the programme has been the research methods training masters for the psychology pathway within the Goldsmiths and Queen Mary ESRC-funded Doctoral Training Centre (2011-2015).

Students in receipt of an ESRC 1+3 PhD studentship in the psychology pathway have to take this course as the first year of a 4-year PhD programme; students who have completed the Masters self-funded, are eligible to bid for an ESRC funded +3 PhD studentship in the psychology pathway at Goldsmiths or Queen Mary.

Structure

The MRes runs for one academic year full-time or two years part-time. Most of the lectures, seminars and workshops on the programme run in the first two terms, but you are expected to pursue your studies beyond formal term times, particularly in respect of your research project.

Lectures, seminars and workshops for the programme are timetabled mainly for Mondays and Tuesdays, but you may occasionally be required to attend other seminars and workshops held by the Department and College. You must take all the modules listed in the syllabus.

Research Project (60 credits)

You will produce an empirical piece of research leading to a research project, supervised by at least one member of the lecturing staff in the Department. The project provides invaluable, practical ‘hands on’ experience of evaluating a particular research question. You have the opportunity to set your research question, determine and apply the methods to obtain the answers, and present, discuss and interpret the results. You normally start your project in the second term, together with necessary literature reviews and research design. Work on your project will continue full-time following the formal examinations in May up until project submission in mid-September.

Additional workshops and seminars

You are also required to attend some of the Department’s programme of Invited Speakers’ talks given by distinguished academics in psychology, and to produce a written critique on one of these. You are welcome to attend the Department’s other seminar series, which are hosted by eminent academics and practitioners.

This programme is aimed at students training for a research career in energy and related areas, in either academia or industry. It focuses on energy demand reduction in the built environment, examining technical solutions within the wider social and economic context.

The course is closely linked with the London-Loughborough Centre for Doctoral Research in Energy Demand (the ‘LoLo CDT’) and is led by internationally-leading research staff at Loughborough University and the Energy Institute at University College, London.

The programme capitalises on the world-class building energy modelling and monitoring expertise in the Building Energy Research Group and the Royal Academy of Engineering Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design. Students make use of our extensive laboratory and full-scale testing facilities, enriched by site visits, conferences, workshops and seminars by external experts. The programme begins with an intensive residential week studying Energy Demand in Context. Students attend lectures from energy experts in different fields, while working to produce a pathway satisfying the goal of a national 80% emissions reduction by 2050.

This is an intensive but rewarding course for future leaders in energy demand research; we accept approximately ten high calibre students each year.

Programme modules

- Energy Demand in Context
The aim of this module is to provide an introduction into the many issues of energy demand in the built environment, setting them in the wider context of climate change policy and the history of energy use. Why is energy demand deduction complex? How did we get to where we are? What are the options for the future, and what is your possible role?

- Building Energy Systems and Models
This module will provide students with a thorough understanding of how systems and models of systems work at various levels, from heat transfer in materials and energy systems to the national building stock. They will understand approaches to modelling buildings, systems of energy demands and the influence of people. Students will be taught how to use building energy models and to interpret the results.

- Energy Theory, Measurement and Interpretation
The aims of this module are: to develop students understanding of the principles of measurement in the context of energy demand and associated factors; to explain how to interpret and represent the results accounting for uncertainties and limitations; and to apply this knowledge at different scales from individual components, to building, urban and national scale.

- Research Development and Dissemination
The module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to devise, plan and disseminate research projects. The module will provide skills in defining research questions and hypotheses; critically reviewing literature; planning a programme of research; communicating to different stakeholders including academia, industry and the public; preparing conference presentations and academic papers; engaging with the public; and producing an MRes Research Dissertation proposal. The module also includes project administration skills including, research ethics and confidentiality.

- Energy Demand: Society Economics and Policy
This module is delivered in the second semester in a series of weekly sessions at UCL. Its aim is to provide a broad understanding of the social, economic, and policy determinants of energy demand, taking into account areas such as pricing and demand, market structure, cost-benefit analysis, social environment and lifestyle, individual attitudes and behaviour, public-private goods, externalities and the policy cycle.

- Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods
This module will provide students with the grounding in quantitative and qualitative research methods that they need to become effective researchers. The module will provide: skills in statistical analysis and use of the SPSS software; an ability to make informed choices about ways of handling data and to assess the appropriateness of particular analytical procedures; an understanding of questionnaire, interview and focus group design, delivery and analysis; and an ability to critically assess and evaluate the research of others. Whilst case-study applications will be relevant to building energy demand, the skills and knowledge acquired will be generic.

- Energy Demand Studies Research Dissertation
The aims of this module are to train students in the planning, execution and evaluation of a substantive research project; to train them in the art of persuading others of the importance of the research and outcomes and to project their work through academic writing. The dissertation enables students to explore a topic of interest in great depth.

Facilities

MRes students make use of the extensive laboratory facilities and test houses operated by the School of Civil and Building Engineering. The MRes combines measurements in buildings with modelling studies, allowing students to experience at first hand the ‘performance gap’ – the difference between modelling and real world behaviour.

Lectures at University College London provide access to world-class experts in energy economics and the societal context. Our staff pride themselves on their enthusiasm and availability to students, who often comment on this aspect of the course in their feedback.

How you will learn

The programme has a strong student-centred and research focus. Four taught modules set the context and provide subject-specific knowledge, whilst two further modules provide training in relevant research methods. A research dissertation forms half of the total credits and can lead to publishable work.

The MRes in Energy Demand Studies can be studied as a 1-year standalone programme and also forms the first year of the 4-year course for students accepted into the LoLo CDT, who then go on to study for a PhD. The opportunity exists for strong MRes students to join the LoLo Centre at the end of their MRes year.

- Assessment
The MRes is assessed entirely by coursework. A group presentation forms part of the assessment in the initial residential module; with the remainder assessed by an individual essay. Other modules include assessment by presentations and written work, including essays, reports and press releases.

The research project is assessed by a dissertation, an academic paper and a viva at which students present the work to an expert panel.

Careers and further study

Both the School of Civil and Building Engineering and the LoLo CDT have strong links with industry (e.g. Willmott Dixon, B&Q), policy makers (e.g. DECC), and the wider stake-holder community.
Dissertation projects are often linked to our industry sponsors’ interests, which provides a natural pathway to future employment and our visiting Royal Academy Professors and industry partners provide practice-based lectures and workshops.

Scholarships

This is a sought-after course, with a small intake, which ensures students’ access to highly qualified tuition. No scholarships are available for the standalone MRes.

This course is open to allied health professionals, midwives, nurses and other professionals working in clinical practice. They should hold current registration with an appropriate regulatory body and meet NHS Trust workforce requirements. Normally have a first or upper second class degree in their area of professional practice and have a least one year of clinical practice experience (or part time equivalent). Candidates should normally be working in an NHS Trust which is prepared to maintain a relationship with the student during the course, in particular to provide an environment for the student to undertake their clinical research project.


There is increasing demand for high quality clinical research to underpin practice, and exciting new career pathways are available for suitably qualified practitioners to lead and develop this research provision.

This course is based in the vibrant research environment of the Clinical Research Centre and provides broad clinical research training for allied health professionals, midwives, nurses and other professionals working in a clinical environment. The course is suitable for clinicians wishing to pursue a clinical academic career and conforms with the NIHR framework for this level of study. Clinicians will be prepared for a leadership role in research and may be able to progress to doctoral-level studies.


Course structure:

As a research degree, the research component is greater than the taught part of the course. The course is made up of four taught modules in the early part of the course, and a supervised clinical research project.

The taught component involves a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops, and the research component is supported by a series of workshops and individual tutorials.


Areas of study:

A wide-ranging introduction to qualitative and quantitative research design and analysis in healthcare is covered. In addition to this, students choose to study specific research methodologies in depth, allowing them to focus on those of most relevance to their clinical practice and research interests.

In order to undertake and lead research in the modern NHS one of the core modules focuses on areas such as public and patient involvement in research, the production of evidence to support decision-making by policy makers, the legislative requirements of undertaking clinical trials and the ethical and economic issues influencing clinical research.

The supervised research project gives students the opportunity to undertake a piece of clinical research within their own clinical area. This allows the research undertaken to directly contribute to the student's current clinical practice and feeds directly into the service provision.

About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. The Department's postgraduate teaching and research programmes now form part of the Faculty's new Graduate School, also launched in 2010, providing postgraduate students with dedicated support and a strong community in which to base their studies - whether on campus or by distance learning.

In keeping with government initiatives surrounding population health and more general public concerns, the Department divides its activities between two main pillars: Healthcare and Population Health – one focuses on the NHS, healthcare and health services research and the other focuses on population health, healthy living, sport & physical activity and tobacco control; each of these groups, in turn, contain both teaching programmes and research activities. Furthermore, there is a bridging spine between both pillars and which houses the Professional Doctorate in Health, Research in Health Practice and the administrative, finance, learning & teaching development, marketing and support activities of the Department.

- Population health

Historically, health policy has focused almost exclusively on sickness services provided by agencies such as the National Health Service. Although this focus on healthcare remains hugely important, it is increasingly complemented by aspirations to improve the health of the population by tackling the social determinants of health such as poverty and pollution and by encouraging people to adopt health promoting behaviours such as healthy diets and increased physical activity and to stop health damaging ones such as smoking. There is also growing national and international concern that improvements in health should be fairly distributed by reducing health inequalities. The Department for Health organises its work related to population health improvement in three main ways. Much the largest element in the population health portfolio is related to sport, health and exercise science, but the School attaches growing importance to tobacco control and health inequalities.

- Healthcare

The Department’s expertise in Healthcare focuses on innovation in the design, delivery, organization, and evaluation of healthcare interventions. We have a particular emphasis on disabling and distressing, long term or life-limiting conditions, such as chronic pain, stroke, dementia, rheumatic disease, and severe mental health problems. Learning and teaching

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed on a semester basis. As you progress through each semester and successfully pass the examinations, you will receive credit for the units, thus providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

Teaching takes the form of lectures, classes and seminars. Lectures are quite formal, whereas classes and seminars involve interaction between the lecturer and a small number of students for study skills and discussion.

Methods of assessment

Assessment consists of a combination of coursework essays, class exercises, projects, oral presentations and examinations.

We also place strong emphasis on developing presentation and discussion/communication skills, which in many units is part of the assessed work.

Cognitive Neuropsychology pathway

This programme is intended primarily for graduates in Psychology, or closely related disciplines, who want to pursue further academic research (MPhil/PhD) in experimental psychology or neuroscience; to teach in higher education; or to develop further knowledge for clinical careers involving work with brain-damaged patients or people suffering from developmental cognitive disorders.

During the course of the MSc, there are opportunities for some students to gain highly relevant clinical experience through case demonstrations and voluntary/paid work at the Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre and Neurodisability Service or in one of the several clinical sites we collaborate with. In some cases, there may also be the possibility of carrying out research for your dissertation in these clinical settings.

The programme is assessed by written examinations, coursework, an oral presentation, journal club and a research dissertation.

Methods and Techniques pathway

Research Project (60 credits)
The project requires you to carry out an empirically or theoretically based psychological project, which can be in any area of Cognitive Neuropsychology, Development Cognitive Neuropsychology, Brain stimulation or Neuroimaging (EEG). You will give an oral presentation of your project in addition to providing a full written report.

Assessment:
The programme is assessed by written examinations, coursework, an oral presentation, journal club and a research dissertation.

Skills

The programme will provide you with knowledge of theory and practical issues relevant to neuroscience and clinical psychology in the UK health services and research centres. The two pathways allow students to shape their study plan according to their interests and career objectives. You will have the opportunity to develop your own research project under the supervision of a member of staff and relevant external clinical/research sector staff.

The programme is tailored for students who wish to proceed to further research on the doctoral level on a topic related to the history of the Near and Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia, East Asia and Africa, but it also makes sense as a stand-alone programme for those who wish to explore a specific topic or question within a shorter period of time.

The two-year intensive language pathway is directed at students who want to engage with a country in a professional as well as academic way, as the intensive language course would enable them to reach a near proficient knowledge of the language.

Career opportunities include:

- Further historical research (PhD)
- Research positions in government institutions, NGOs, journalism, etc.

This is the only Master-level programme in Historical Research Methods focusing on the study of Asia and Africa in the UK. It provides the unique opportunity to develop and carry out a research project under the guidance of regional specialists and thus an ideal preparation for a research degree. It can also be taken with an intensive language pathway over two years, therefore making this programme unique in Europe.

The Korean pathway is designed for beginner learners of Korean. Students with prior knowledge of Korean are advised to contact the programme convenor, Dr Anders Karlsson (). Structure

Students take 4 course units over the period of their programme of study (i.e. 2 or 4 years). This includes the core course Sources and Research Design in Historical Research (1 unit), which is taught on a one-to-one basis by the dissertation supervisor, the compulsory course Research Methods in History with Special Reference to Asia and Africa (1 unit), a minor course or courses (to the value of 1 unit) from a list of approved options and/or a language course from the Faculty of Languages and Cultures, and a 10,000 word dissertation (1 unit).

In the intensive language pathways, students take 2 intensive language units and one history unit in their first year. During the summer, they will participate in a summer school abroad (location dependant on language). Upon their return, they will take 1 language unit and 2 history units and complete work on their dissertation (1 unit). For example, Year 1: 2 intensive language units + compulsory course Research Methods in History with Special Reference to Asia and Africa; Year 2: 1 intensive language unit + core course Sources and Research Design in Historical Research (1 unit) + minor courses to the value of 1 unit + dissertation.

Aims and Outcomes

- Knowledge of a variety of theoretical issues and methodological approaches relevant for the study of historical problems

- Practical research and writing skills, developed through the study of primary and secondary sources related to Asian and African history

- A sound grounding for further research, either in a doctoral programme or in a professional environment

- A near proficient ability in the a language.

Knowledge:
1. How to locate materials and use research resources (particularly research library catalogues, archival hand lists, and digital resources), assess data and evidence critically from manuscripts, printed, and digital sources, and solve problems of conflicting sources and conflicting interpretations.

2. How to formulate and carry out a research project, based on a thorough knowledge and understanding of the particular field of study chosen by the student, the relevant literature and current debates.
3. Language skills appropriate to chosen region of study.

Intellectual (thinking) skills:
1. Students should become precise and cautious in their assessment of evidence and understand what the different types of historical sources can and cannot tell us.

2. Students should question interpretations, however authoritative, maintain an open-minded attitude to interpretations that challenge older interpretations, and reassess evidence for themselves.

3. Students should be able to think critically about the nature of the historical discipline, its methodology, historiography, and openness for interdisciplinary approaches.

4. Students should be able to reflect about the potential of historical research on non-Western societies and civilizations for the advancement of the historical discipline and human civilization in general.

This MRes is accredited by the Economics & Social Research Council (ESRC), specifically, as part of the larger South West Doctoral Training Centre (SWDTC). It forms part of the Social Policy Discipline-specific Pathway.

The MRes can be taken as a course in its own right, or as part of the 1 + 3 (MRes + PhD) pathway, where successful graduates could proceed onto an MPhil or PhD in the Department of Social & Policy Sciences.

Learning and teaching

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed on a semester basis. As you progress through each semester and successfully pass the examinations, you will receive credit for the units, thus providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

Teaching takes the form of lectures, classes and seminars. Lectures are quite formal, whereas classes and seminars involve interaction between the lecturer and a small number of students for study skills and discussion.

Methods of assessment

Assessment consists of a combination of coursework essays, class exercises, projects, oral presentations and examinations.

We also place strong emphasis on developing presentation and discussion/communication skills, which in many units is part of the assessed work.
