The Research Analyst graduate certificate program focuses on the theoretical, practical and ethical underpinnings of research, while also equipping you with the statistical, technical and professional skills necessary to do applied research in a variety of different settings throughout the public and private sectors.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

You will spend a considerable proportion of your time in a hands-on environment, spending over 200 hours within the biomedical science laboratories, completing practicals and working on a specific research project that interests you and aligns with our expertise.

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 15,000 words and a viva voce examination (90 credits).

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory classes and research supervision. Assessment is through the dissertation, unseen written examinations, research papers, a written literature survey, and an oral examination. The MPhil/PhD programme offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of culture. We'll introduce you to a wide variety of perspectives and traditions, animated via a creative interface between disciplines.

You'll develop a fundamental grounding in social and cultural theory, cultural studies and cultural research, as well as skills in ethnography, digital media, textual and audio-visual analysis.

The programme encourages you to deploy these methods to articulate your appreciation of crucial debates in the public domains of the media, the culture industries, formal and informal institutions, and in the wider contemporary cultural scene.

Many students write text-based theses, but approximately one third of our candidates produce theses that incorporate practical work in media and/or arts.

Registration and study

Initially, you register for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programme to train you in the research methods you will need to complete a PhD.

You can apply to upgrade to PhD registration when you have satisfactorily completed an agreed part of the research and training programme; this usually happens after 18 months if you are studying full-time, or 24 months if part-time.

You should aim to complete and submit your PhD thesis within an agreed period, usually three to four years for full-time students, and four to six years for part-time.

If you decide not to upgrade to PhD registration, you can submit your thesis for an MPhil after two years if you are studying full-time, or after three years if part-time.

With the agreement of your supervisor, you can change your registration from full to part-time or vice versa; the necessary form is available from the Student Records Office.

North American applicants especially should note that the British system does not include preparatory taught classes or examinations as part of the MPhil/PhD programme, except for an initial module in research methods.

Research supervision

Research students are normally co-supervised by one staff member from the centre and a staff member from the academic department whose expertise is best suited to your needs.

Often one supervisor will see you for a term or two and then the other co-supervisor will take over for an extended period, depending on the sort of work you are undertaking at the particular point in time.

Some students are single-supervised by a member of the Centre's staff. In cases of co-supervision, you will normally meet with one co-supervisor at a time.

You'll be able to draw on wide-ranging and interdisciplinary supervisory teams and if your thesis is partly by other media, specialist supervision will be provided. For example:

-A student of consumer culture might be supervised by a media studies analyst of material culture and a specialist in digital design
-A student investigating postcolonial cultural forms could be supervised by an art/architectural historian and an anthropologist versed in hybrid cultures in Brazil or India
-A student inquiring into performativity may have one supervisor who is an expert in theatre studies and another who is an expert in the sociology of the body
-An inquiry into the sources of European identity could be supervised by specialists in the history of English and European literatures
-A thesis presented through multimedia installation could be co-supervised by a practitioner from the Department of Art

Research topics are wide ranging; from the historical and comparative study of literature, art and architecture to the future of digital media and the informational city; from border cultures in Malaysia, Mexico or South London to the future of the self-organizing city; from philosophical considerations of Heidegger's idea of Technik, to empirical studies of new forms of work in the information society.

Research training

A College-wide programme of research training is provided, which involves an induction module (which all students should attend), introduction to information technologies and the use of library and bibliographic resources, basic training in qualitative and quantitative research methods, and sessions on research planning, presentation skills and ethics.

The main aim of this programme is to provide a training in research for psychological therapists, currently working with complex cases, relevant to their area and modality of clinical practice. Currently we are able to provide this for people who have undertaken a substantial Psychoanalytic or a substantial Systemic, clinical training.

By the end of the programme we aim to have enabled members to have:
• Developed the capacity to critically review and reflect upon the underlying theoretical and clinical assumption underlying their practice.
• Develop a substantial, in-depth and systematic understanding of a substantial body of knowledge at the forefront of their discipline;
• Develop a capacity to critically evaluate that body of knowledge by reference to research developments in other related disciplines
• Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of research methodologies applicable to their discipline;
• Independently evaluate research, advanced scholarship and methodologies and to argue alternative approaches;
• Synthesise new approaches in a manner that can contribute to the development of methodology or understanding in clinical research practice;
• Analyse and manage ethical dilemmas and to link rigorously objective empirical research with rigorous, subjective understandings drawn from your therapeutic modality;

This Research Doctorate provides a programme of teaching, academic assignments and supervised research training and usually takes three and a half years to complete. It may be undertaken as a free standing course by applicants who have successfully completed a substantial psychotherapeutic clinical training as a Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic therapist or Analyst (British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) registered or equivalent); as a Child psychotherapist (Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP)(or equivalent) as a Family or Couples’ Therapist ( or equivalent)or as a Group Analyst (Institute of Group Analysis (IGA) member or equivalent). Alternatively it may be undertaken by trainees on one of the above trainings but not before the beginning of the third year of their clinical training.

In addition to a sound clinical grounding the programme also emphasises the development of evidence based practice and practice based evidence. With students we consider what constitutes evidence; the particular strengths and weaknesses of particular kinds of evidence including the traditional single case approach traditionally associated with psychoanalytic ideas. We also consider the clinician as researcher; the countertransferential evidence acquired in the clinical session; the formulation of hypotheses in the therapeutic encounter; their extrapolation in generalised hypotheses of human psychological functioning; the need to generalise from these and the problems in so doing; the uses of extra-analytic information and theory as something which illuminates clinical practice or alternatively intrudes upon the patient therapist interaction.

Exeter has an international reputation for research relevant to psychotherapeutic clinical practice. It is part of Clinical Education Development And Research (CEDAR) within the department of Psychology at Exeter (http://cedar.exeter.ac.uk/programmes). As well as senior and experienced analytically trained clinicians who are also working in various clinical setting, teaching on the programme, students also have access to senior, research active supervisors and teachers in a range of research methodologies, qualitative and quantitative, with a wide spectrum of research interests.

Programme structure

The programme is suitable for practising clinicians who are interested in exploring, understanding and critically examining the ideas and assumptions which underpin their clinical practise in a systematic manner from a variety of perspectives. The idea of ‘research’ is critically examined along with what may be considered as ‘evidence’, the contexts in which it is gathered and the ways in which it may be used. Participants in the programme acquire the capacity to understand and critically evaluate various kinds of research relevant to their clinical practice along with its uses and limitations. The programme is appropriate for practitioners working in Health & Social Services, in the Independent or third sector who work with people experiencing mental health difficulties.

Over the first twenty months of the programme there are four, five day intensive block events which take place, on campus at the University of Exeter on its Exeter site. In any year these take place shortly before Easter and at the beginning of September. These four block events are the only part of the programme which members have to attend in person. The remainder of the programme may be completed ‘at a distance’ by means of Skype, video conferencing or telephone.

The backbone of the intensive block events is a rolling programme of research teaching; over the twenty months programme members acquire an understanding of a range of research approaches and methods, qualitative and quantitative. They also have the chance to become familiar with and critically examine classic and seminal research papers relevant to their psychotherapeutic practise. There are also seminars led and facilitated by experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapists, analysts, systemic practitioners and academics examining different kinds of research approaches and ideas and matters such as ethics and writing for publication.
Over the twenty months a number of assignments need to be completed. Teaching is also provided during the events in support of these as well as through the learning sets/research groups and monthly tutorials. Programme Contents

The module of Economic Theory and Econometric Methods, which you will take in the autumn semester of your first year of study, is the foundation of the programme. It covers the central microeconomic and macroeconomic theory as well as basic econometric methods. After completing this module, you can choose from a wide selection of fields of economics to concentrate on. Optional studies consist of additional courses in economics, or other university-level courses. In addition, an internship or a labour market project is included in the degree requirements.

The programme mostly comprises lecture courses. The courses on economic theory and econometric methods consist of lectures and exercise sessions; for the most part they are completed by taking a written examination. Depending on the track, you take 3 to 4 field courses, selected based on your interests so that they form a meaningful whole. Additional field courses in economics can be included in the optional studies. In the field courses, you will be exposed to different teaching methods, such as problem-based learning and other group activities and seminars. Your grades in many field courses will be based on assignments, presentations and term papers in addition to a final examination.

Economics is a quantitative social science discipline, so you are expected to have good basic command of mathematics and statistics. Your skills in these areas will be systematically developed in this programme. Especially if you aim for a career as an economist or for doctoral studies, you are advised to include further methodological courses in your optional studies. In addition to mathematics and statistics, courses in computer science are recommended.

The structure of the programme is comparable to those of the Master's programmes in economics offered by the best international universities. It differs from the Master's programmes of the Finnish business schools in that the demanding courses in economic theory and econometrics comprise a greater proportion, and the goal is above all to prepare you for a career as an economist. The research track corresponds to Master's programmes in quantitative economics offered by some foreign universities. In line with our programme, the research track will prepare you for a career as an economist and for doctoral studies in economics.

Selection of the Major

The programme has two tracks:
-General track
-Research track

You select the track when applying for the programme: your choice will determine the degree requirements. The difference between the tracks is that the Research track aims at providing more profound knowledge of economic theory and econometric methods, whereas the General track emphasises fields and applications of economics, and it is possible to include more optional studies in the degree. The Research track prepares you for doctoral studies in economics, and its degree requirements contain most of the doctoral-level core courses in economic theory and econometrics. Taking these courses as part of the Master's degree helps you to graduate faster from the doctoral programme later. Graduates from the Research track are given precedence for the doctoral programme in economics at the University of Helsinki. The Research track is also recommended if you are interested in taking the more demanding core courses to acquire more profound knowledge of economics even if your goal is not to pursue doctoral studies.

Programme Structure

The programme comprises 120 credits (ECTS, European Credit Transfer System), and it is designed to be completed in two years. The degree requirements consist of the following modules (in the General / Research track):

After completing the unit in economic theory and econometric methods, you select the fields in economics that you want to concentrate on. It is advisable for you to include further advanced field courses in economics or methodological courses in your optional studies. The study unit in research skills prepares you for writing the Master's thesis, and familiarises you with scholarly work in economics, research ethics and reporting research results. In addition, you prepare a research proposal for your thesis. Integrated into the studies, the degree requirements include drawing up a personal study plan, and career planning. An internship period, a labour market project or other studies aimed at developing employment skills are also included (5 to 15 ECTS so that the extent of these studies and the optional studies amount to 30 ECTS in the General track and to 20 ECTS in the Research track).

Career Prospects

The Master's Programme in Economics at the University of Helsinki prepares you for a career as an economist in business and the public sector. Economists are employed in administrative, planning and development duties requiring economic expertise in various national and international organisations. Examples include an analyst career involving risk management, asset pricing and investment strategy, jobs related to analysing the market, production and pricing in companies, assessment and planning of economic policy, and communication. Analytical skills and knowledge of quantitative methods will be of central importance in your work as an economist. In particular, economists find employment in government, financial institutions, central banks, national and international organisations, and business.

The Research track prepares you for particularly demanding careers. It is also an excellent path to doctoral studies in economics. It is advisable to select the field courses and the topic for your Master's thesis in view of your interests and career goals. An internship is a good chance to acquire work experience in your area of interest.


The atmosphere at the Helsinki Centre of Economic Research (HECER) is quite international, consisting of the Discipline of Economics and the departments of economics at Aalto University and the Hanken School of Economics. The staff regularly publish in international journals and collaborate with foreign researchers. There are also several regular research seminars on a number of fields, where mostly foreign visitors present their work. In addition, foreign researchers often pay longer visits to the HECER, and a large proportion of the graduate students come from abroad.

All courses in the programme are taught in English, and a large proportion of Master's theses are written in English. The staff have ample experience at universities abroad, and there are several foreigners among them. Foreign graduate students act as teaching assistants, and exchange students from the universities involved in the HECER regularly take the courses of the programme. You can include study units in foreign languages arranged by the Language Centre in the optional studies.

The degree requirements meet internationally unified standards in economics. The University of Helsinki has a number of agreements with foreign universities that enable you to visit them to gain international experience and take courses offered there. Courses taken at the master's level at universities abroad can replace field courses in economics in the degree requirements, and you can include other university-level courses in your optional studies. The most suitable time for a visit to a foreign university is in the spring semester of your first year of study after completing the core courses in economic theory and econometrics. You can also include an internship abroad as part of your studies.

Business Ethics and Enterprise

Dissertation Preparation and Research Methods
The Research methods unit will help prepare you for your dissertation. You will recognise and critically evaluate approaches to management research and the assumptions upon which they are based. This will equip you to make justified choices as to appropriate quantitative/qualitative research methods for data collection and subsequent analysis. You will then be able to conduct research, and evaluate primary and secondary data sources in a systematic and critically reflective manner.

You will also evaluate potential limitations to research investigation and applications and develop a coherent and appropriate research proposal, recognising the ethical implications of research investigations and their impact upon findings.

You will analyse a sustainability or CSR issue in depth. This course provides you with an introduction to the role of technology in development, focusing particularly on mobile phone and computer technologies. Participatory research
This course combines detailed understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of participatory research and methods with practical experience of using different participatory research techniques. Modern economics is an increasingly rigorous discipline and advanced degrees are now essential for careers in international institutions, government and industry. The Economics MSc at UCL will equip the professional economist with the powerful tools required to understand the rapidly changing, complex and uncertain modern world economy.

Degree information

The programme aims to provide all students with a sound and worthwhile education in modern economics and econometrics, developing important transferable skills of problem-definition, analysis and self-motivation. Students will learn to use the formal tools that are necessary to understand and conduct cutting-edge research in both theoretical and applied economics.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of four core modules (60 credits), four optional modules (60 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits).

Logic is the basis for reasoning about what we can express and compute, having a profound influence in philosophy, linguistics, mathematics, computer science, and electronics. Since the invention of computers, logic has always been the primary source of ideas and techniques for the theoretical and practical development of programming.

Today, as the scope of programming technologies expands, and the horizon of applications widens, research in logic and its applications in software and hardware development is booming. In industry, formal methods are an integral part of system development, e.g., in automotive electronics, avionics, and chip design.

The MRes Logic and Computation course will teach you about advanced techniques in logic and their applications in research problems in computer science. Course Content

Research Component

The main part of the MRes in Logic and Computation is a substantial and challenging project involving cutting edge research. The completion of such a project will give you the ability and confidence to pursue a successful career in industrial research and development, or to proceed to academic PhD studies.

Taught Component

In seminars and reading courses you will enter the world of research by studying general topics in theoretical computer science as well as special topics for your research project. Guided by your supervisor you will conquer new technical subjects and learn to critically assess current research.
Lecturers and students will meet regularly to discuss recent developments and give informal talks. Topics of the seminars are chosen in accordance with the research projects, and will cover material such as:

Theorem proving techniques
Formal program verification
Algebraic and coalgebraic specification
Modelling of distributed systems
Advanced methods in complexity theory
Additionally you will choose selected taught modules covering important topics such as Critical Systems, IT Security, Concepts of Programming
Languages, Artificial Intelligence Applications, Design Patterns and Generic Programming.


The Department is well equipped for teaching, and is continually upgrading its laboratories to ensure equipment is up-to-date – equipment is never more than three years old, and rarely more than two. Currently, students use three fully networked laboratories: one, running Windows; another running Linux; and a project laboratory, containing specialised equipment. These laboratories support a wide range of software, including the programming languages Java, C# and the .net framework, C, C++, Haskell and Prolog among many; integrated programme development environments such as Visual Studio and Netbeans; the widely-used Microsoft Office package; web access tools; and many special purpose software tools including graphical rendering and image manipulation tools; expert system production tools; concurrent system modelling tools; World Wide Web authoring tools; and databases.
