You will spend a considerable proportion of your time in a hands-on environment, spending over 200 hours within the biomedical science laboratories, completing practicals and working on a specific research project that interests you and aligns with our expertise.

We will give you access to Class 2 microbiology facilities, along with cell culture and micro-electric fabrication equipment. With our new dedicated biomedical sciences research laboratory (opened in 2013) you will be able to conduct project work in a dedicated research environment and will benefit from an enhanced range of equipment.

Advanced Professional Practice and Research

This MSc offers a comprehensive guide to all aspects of modern day drug design. It is taught by research scientists, clinicians and industry experts. Our graduates have progressed to undertake or obtain PhDs or medical studentships, or have found employment in both the private and public sector.

About this degree

The programme covers all aspects of drug design, including genomics, bioinformatics, structural biology, cheminformatics, molecular modelling and fragment-based drug design, drug target selection, intellectual property and marketing. New therapies and research areas such as antibodies, siRNA, stem cells and high throughput screening are covered. Students will develop essential skills such as research methods and techniques of drug design.

Dissertation/report

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which can take the form of a wet lab or dry lab computational or modelling based project or an external project with an industrial sponsor.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, self study, practical sessions and discussion groups. The research project forms one third of the programme. Each of the taught modules is assessed by unseen written examination (50%) and coursework (50%). The research project is assessed by the dissertation and viva.

You will receive a grounding in relevant foundational research methods and theoretical paradigms before choosing from a variety of modules that examine the use of language and visual media in professional practice, and consider how language is employed in creating our identities, in interacting with others and in the ideological construction of discourses in a range of social and institutional contexts.

Distinctive features:

Our Centre for Language and Communication Research has a well established reputation in a broad range of teaching and research areas, including sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, multimodality, forensic linguistics, systemic functional grammar, phonology, and lexical studies.

Teaching

Teaching is delivered by staff with an international reputation for innovative and influential research across a broad spectrum of interrelated issues.

You will be taught core knowledge and understanding through lectures, small-group seminars and group discussion.

Teaching for core modules combines discussion of theoretical issues and the practical challenges of qualitative and quantitative analysis of language/communication data, while teaching for optional modules provides further theoretical discussion with some focus on the development of practical research skills.

Intellectual Skills are promoted via lectures, seminars and group discussions individual supervision and guidance for research undertaken in planning and writing the dissertation. You will also learn via one-to-one supervision of individual ‘research experience’ projects and dissertations.

The learning activities will vary from module to module as appropriate, but will usually include interactive discussions of prepared texts/topics and, in some cases, student-led presentations.

You will be encouraged to explore our excellent library resources and expected to undertake preparation including wide-ranging reading to enable full participation.

Assessment

Assessment of the taught component is by coursework only.

Modules are assessed on the basis of analytical descriptions of texts or other media and/or discursive essays. You are encouraged to choose your own texts for analysis, or even to collect original data, and to relate their analyses to areas of personal interest.

Emphasis in assessment is placed on critical and conceptual sophistication as well as on the production of clear, persuasive and scholarly essays presented in a professional manner and submitted on time.

You are encouraged to consult the relevant module leader to discuss the main ideas and the plan for your assignments. The second part of the MA is examined by dissertation, supported by individual supervision.

The main aim of this programme is to provide a training in research for psychological therapists, currently working with complex cases, relevant to their area and modality of clinical practice. Currently we are able to provide this for people who have undertaken a substantial Psychoanalytic or a substantial Systemic, clinical training.

By the end of the programme we aim to have enabled members to have:
• Developed the capacity to critically review and reflect upon the underlying theoretical and clinical assumption underlying their practice.
• Develop a substantial, in-depth and systematic understanding of a substantial body of knowledge at the forefront of their discipline;
• Develop a capacity to critically evaluate that body of knowledge by reference to research developments in other related disciplines
• Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of research methodologies applicable to their discipline;
• Independently evaluate research, advanced scholarship and methodologies and to argue alternative approaches;

This Research Doctorate provides a programme of teaching, academic assignments and supervised research training and usually takes three and a half years to complete. It may be undertaken as a free standing course by applicants who have successfully completed a substantial psychotherapeutic clinical training as a Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic therapist or Analyst (British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) registered or equivalent); as a Child psychotherapist (Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP)(or equivalent) as a Family or Couples’ Therapist ( or equivalent)or as a Group Analyst (Institute of Group Analysis (IGA) member or equivalent). Alternatively it may be undertaken by trainees on one of the above trainings but not before the beginning of the third year of their clinical training.

In addition to a sound clinical grounding the programme also emphasises the development of evidence based practice and practice based evidence. With students we consider what constitutes evidence; the particular strengths and weaknesses of particular kinds of evidence including the traditional single case approach traditionally associated with psychoanalytic ideas. We also consider the clinician as researcher; the countertransferential evidence acquired in the clinical session; the formulation of hypotheses in the therapeutic encounter; their extrapolation in generalised hypotheses of human psychological functioning; the need to generalise from these and the problems in so doing; the uses of extra-analytic information and theory as something which illuminates clinical practice or alternatively intrudes upon the patient therapist interaction.

Exeter has an international reputation for research relevant to psychotherapeutic clinical practice. It is part of Clinical Education Development And Research (CEDAR) within the department of Psychology at Exeter (http://cedar.exeter.ac.uk/programmes). As well as senior and experienced analytically trained clinicians who are also working in various clinical setting, teaching on the programme, students also have access to senior, research active supervisors and teachers in a range of research methodologies, qualitative and quantitative, with a wide spectrum of research interests.

Programme structure

The programme is suitable for practising clinicians who are interested in exploring, understanding and critically examining the ideas and assumptions which underpin their clinical practise in a systematic manner from a variety of perspectives. The idea of ‘research’ is critically examined along with what may be considered as ‘evidence’, the contexts in which it is gathered and the ways in which it may be used. Participants in the programme acquire the capacity to understand and critically evaluate various kinds of research relevant to their clinical practice along with its uses and limitations. The programme is appropriate for practitioners working in Health & Social Services, in the Independent or third sector who work with people experiencing mental health difficulties.

Over the first twenty months of the programme there are four, five day intensive block events which take place, on campus at the University of Exeter on its Exeter site. In any year these take place shortly before Easter and at the beginning of September. These four block events are the only part of the programme which members have to attend in person. The remainder of the programme may be completed ‘at a distance’ by means of Skype, video conferencing or telephone.

The backbone of the intensive block events is a rolling programme of research teaching; over the twenty months programme members acquire an understanding of a range of research approaches and methods, qualitative and quantitative. They also have the chance to become familiar with and critically examine classic and seminal research papers relevant to their psychotherapeutic practise. There are also seminars led and facilitated by experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapists, analysts, systemic practitioners and academics examining different kinds of research approaches and ideas and matters such as ethics and writing for publication.
Over the twenty months a number of assignments need to be completed. Teaching is also provided during the events in support of these as well as through the learning sets/research groups and monthly tutorials. Overview

This masters programme is ideal for mid-career professionals. You'll find the course useful if you are, or intend to, work with policy; either as an adviser, researcher, analyst or consultant.

You'll study a strongly international curriculum that is based around a combination of comparative social and public policy management and advanced research skills training. This course builds directly on our applied policy research expertise, both in the taught modules which draw heavily on our own research and in the practice-relevant activity that provides an opportunity to participate in ongoing policy research projects.

Course content

This is a 21-month course that specialises in social and public policy analysis and social research. You'll focus on comparative cross-national and international policy. You'll also spend time analysing policy development and policy lessons from OECD member states.

The first half of this MPA will enable you to study and explore a combination of comparative social policy and public management. In the second half you'll get advanced research skills training. You'll undertake practice related activities including small group projects that will expose you to applied policy research in practice with the support of a learning mentor.

Our MRes Psychology research-focused course will give you in-depth theoretical understanding, knowledge and practical experience of key research paradigms, research designs and statistical techniques used in psychology and, more broadly, in the social sciences.

You will receive extensive training in:

  • quantitative methods: path analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, multi-level modelling, signal detection analysis and non-linear regression models;
  • qualitative methods: focus groups, interviewing skills, IPA, thematic analysis, grounded theory, discourse analysis and conversation analysis. 

You will also receive training in meta-analytical techniques, experience sampling, physiological recording methods, eye-tracking and working with children.

Our MRes focuses on various forms of dissemination activity including:

Sustainability, Development and Society
You will develop a detailed understanding of key social / environmental relationships incorporating contemporary issues in the geographies of sustainability. Business Ethics and Enterprise

The course will cover different types of business including large publicly traded multinationals, small and medium sized enterprises, social enterprises and family firms. Students will be expected to understand the different issues in these organizational types and to articulate moral arguments from a range of different perspectives.

International Strategy
This course provides the student with an understanding of how international business strategy fits into the organisation and running of a company or multi-company corporation. The lectures are used to illustrate the key points under each topic as well as real business examples. Workshops will be used for case studies and applications of the material covered in the lectures. Dissertation Preparation and Research Methods
The Research methods unit will help prepare you for your dissertation. You will recognise and critically evaluate approaches to management research and the assumptions upon which they are based. This will equip you to make justified choices as to appropriate quantitative/qualitative research methods for data collection and subsequent analysis. You will then be able to conduct research, and evaluate primary and secondary data sources in a systematic and critically reflective manner.

You will also evaluate potential limitations to research investigation and applications and develop a coherent and appropriate research proposal, recognising the ethical implications of research investigations and their impact upon findings.

Dissertation
You will analyse a sustainability or CSR issue in depth. International Sustainability Management
This course provides participants with an understanding of how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) informs sustainability management issues in large, transnational organisations. It will focus on issues such as consumption and sustainability as dichotomised between the apparently incompatible tensions of economic and environmental interests.

Technology and Development
This course provides you with an introduction to the role of technology in development, focusing particularly on mobile phone and computer technologies. The course combines an understanding of key theoretical debates and how technologies have been applied in diverse sectors such as health and education. The course also includes training in the use of GIS (geographical information systems) within a development context.

Participatory research
This course combines detailed understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of participatory research and methods with practical experience of using different participatory research techniques. Combining core research skills with specialist criminology and criminal justice teaching from research-active staff, this course will encourage you to critically examine the theoretical foundations that underpin applied criminological research.

Teaching and learning

This course is taught by an interdisciplinary team of experts using a variety of delivery methods: lectures, workshops, student-led presentations and debate, group work and individual research.

Coursework and assessment

Most course units are assessed by 3500 word essay or by essay and presentation.

Course unit details

To meet the requirements of the taught element of the course, all students must take course units totalling 120 credits. This is normally attained with eight 15-credit course units, as listed below, with 60 credits taken each semester. Students take 5 core units. The availability of individual optional course units is subject to change (due, among other factors, to staff availability to deliver the course units in any given year). Information that is sent to students in the month of August preceding registration onto the course will clearly state the course units that are available in the academic year ahead.

In addition, students who pass the taught element of the course and who are permitted to progress to the research element of the course, must also submit a dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words worth 60 credits.

Part-time  students take four out of the five compulsory course units in the first year, and then take the other one in year two. The remaining 60 credits of optional course units are selected and taken accordingly over the two years. 

 Dissertation

  • Supervised summer dissertation of 12-15,000 words. 
  • Part-time master's students undertake a dissertation in the summer months of year two. Please note that the part-time students can extend their registration for extra 3 months to submit their dissertations in December of their second year, instead of September (you will be advised of the exact date on the second year of the course).

Exit awards

Students who fail to fulfil the requirements to pass the 180 credits necessary to attain the final degree of MRes can leave the course with the award of Postgraduate Diploma by passing 120 credits at the pass mark of 40%, or can qualify for the Postgraduate Certificate by passing 60 credits at the pass mark of 40%. Students who do not fulfil the criteria for passing the taught element of the course at the Masters' level of 50% will not be permitted to progress to the dissertation element of the course, and will leave the course with the highest award that the credits that have been passed will allow.

This multidisciplinary programme provides training in both the basic scientific and technological principles of modern neuroimaging methods, and in their application to understand neurological function and neurological disorders. About this degree

Students will develop a foundational knowledge of neuroanatomy, understand the principles and main technical aspects of neuroimaging instrumentation and data acquisition, basic image processing and image analysis techniques, and gain a good working knowledge of modern methods for scientific and clinical investigation of the human nervous system using neuroimaging.

Assessment is through written examination, coursework, presentations, research project, dissertation and viva voce. Distance learning students may spend up to three months in London carrying out the research project and receiving relevant training and mentoring. Alternatively they may carry out an extended systematic review of the literature related to a chosen field within neuroimaging. In exceptional circumstances students may carry out the research project remotely if they are based at a hospital with established research links with Principal Investigators at the UCL Institute of Neurology.

The fields of graphics, vision and imaging increasingly rely on one another. This unique and timely MSc provides training in computer graphics, geometry processing, virtual reality, machine vision and imaging technology from world-leading experts, enabling students to specialise in any of these areas and gain a grounding in the others.

About this degree

Graduates will understand the basic mathematical principles underlying the development and application of new techniques in computer graphics and computer vision and will be aware of the range of algorithms and approaches available, and be able to design, develop and evaluate algorithms and methods for new problems, emerging technologies and applications.

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project related to a problem of industrial interest or on a topic near the leading edge of research, which culminates in a 60–80 page dissertation.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures and tutorials. Lectures are often supported by laboratory work with help from demonstrators. Student performance is assessed by unseen written examinations, coursework and a substantial individual project.

The MSc in Globalisation and Latin American Development focuses on the study of economic development in Latin America and the Caribbean and it is designed to prepare a new generation of regional leaders in international development. The programme focuses on the challenges and opportunities that globalisation and democracy offer to developing countries in the Americas and their impact for sustainable and equitable economic development.

About this degree

We encourage our students to understand development studies from an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. Our main focus is on historical and contemporary patterns of economic development and the social impact of economic growth and redistribution. Consequently, our programme provides the students with high-quality training in theories of economic development, social science methods, and principles of policy analysis.

Dissertation/report

All students write a dissertation of 15,000 words (90 credits) on a research topic of their choice related to globalisation and economic development in Latin America.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, independent reading and research, seminar discussions and research skills training. Assessment is through essays, term papers, presentations, analytical exercises and the dissertation.

Fieldwork

Many of our MSc students undertake fieldwork in order to carry out research for their dissertation projects.

There may be travel costs associated with fieldwork. The institute has limited funds available to students to help towards the costs of fieldwork. These funds are awarded on a competitive basis on the criteria of academic performance to date, the quality of the research proposal and the importance of fieldwork for completing the research.
