The purpose of the MSc in Fire and Rescue Service Management is to promote increased understanding of critical management processes and hopefully to enable satisfactory performance in high-consequence, high risk situations.

Strategic managers in the Fire and Rescue Service in risk critical situations face unique challenges in both preparing for and dealing with situations which threaten life and critical infrastructure or reputation.

This postgraduate course brings together insights regarding risk perception and decision making across domains ranging from the operational context, cognitive psychology, economics, and public policy. It suggests strategies to ensure a mature effective response to various managerial situations.

MSc Fire and Rescue Service Management develops the abilities of critical decision makers to grasp a situation, formulate a response assess success and failure and redefine an improved response. The course offers tools and strategies which allow Fire and Rescue Service managers to generate, evaluate, and select among decision options.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

There are potential short-term placements within fire and rescue services.

There are exchange visits to Hong Kong Fire Service offered to a limited number of students and also opportunities to work with International partners to develop fire and rescue service infrastructure in those countries where there are limited resources available.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT]]
MSc students take practical classes, carry out casework and conduct lab-based dissertation research projects. Students also have access to a wide range of analytical instrumentation in the Faculty of Science and Technology’s Analytical Unit. In collaboration with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service all students are tested in a simulated command environment.

Assessment is by examinations, practicals and coursework. Practical assessment involves command simulations.

The course focuses on managerial decision making within the fire and rescue service, in both an operational and non-operational context. It includes environmental scanning (both external and internal), strategy formulation (strategic or long range planning), strategy implementation, and evaluation and control. Situational awareness and risk decision making in time pressured and high risk situations. Students will be tested in command simulations representative of those applicable to the emergency incident domain. The theory and practical sessions will build confidence through the development of practical expertise and specialist knowledge in the field of strategic management.

As a Master of Engineering (ME) graduate you will have the opportunity to either seek employment as a professional engineer, or start a research career.

The ME normally takes 12 months to complete full-time.  It builds on prior study at undergraduate level, such as the four-year BE(Hons) or BSc(Tech).  The degree requires 120 points, which can either be made up of 30 points in taught papers and a 90-point dissertation (research project), or one 120-point thesis.

If you enrol in an ME via the Faculty of Science & Engineering you can major in Engineering, and your thesis topic may come from our wide range of study areas such as biological engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, environmental engineering and electronic engineering.

The Faculty of Science & Engineering fosters collaborative relationships between science, engineering, industry and management.  The Faculty has developed a very strong research base to support its aims of providing you with in-depth knowledge, analytical skills, innovative ideas, and techniques to translate science into technology in the real world.

The computing facilities at the University of Waikato are among the best in New Zealand, ranging from phones and tablets for mobile application development to cluster computers for massively parallel processing. Software engineering students will have 24 hour access to computer labs equipped with all the latest computer software.

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.

-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

Fieldwork opportunities

Fieldwork is an essential part of the Hazard and Disaster Management MSc. You will undertake a supervised week-long visit to a European field destination affected by multi-hazards (usually to Tenerife in June). Course structure

You will study the underpinning scientific principles of both natural hazards (eg hurricanes, storms and tornadoes, flooding, landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis and radon gas emissions) and human-induced disasters (eg terrorism, explosions and oil tanker accidents).

You will also cover modern disaster management strategies and planning techniques for the mitigation (eg structural measures and education), preparation (eg early warning), response (eg search and rescue) and recovery (eg insurance) phases.

You will also undertake active research in one or more of your chosen hazard areas.

Risk and disaster reduction, particularly within the contexts of dealing with uncertainty and increasing resilience, are high on local, national and international agendas. The Risk and Disaster Reduction MRes is a research-intensive programme, which aims to meet the rapidly growing need for experts trained to analyse and provide solutions to complex issues relating to risk and disasters.

Degree information

Students will learn about and explore the characterisation, quantification, management and reduction of risk and disasters, and their associated impacts, from a diverse range of scientific, technical, socio-economic, political, environmental, ethical and cultural perspectives. They will acquire advanced levels of knowledge of empirical, theoretical and practical aspects of risk and disaster reduction, and will gain research experience and the ability to effectively communicate research findings through the independent research project.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

There are a number of UK-based day fieldtrips as part of the programme. These look at the multiple facets of disaster risk including the physical hazard, vulnerability of structures and communities, and mitigation measures and management.

During a reorganisation or liquidation process all (legal) relationships of a company are in a high state of tension and every aspect of a company is under severe scrutiny. This is what makes insolvency law a particularly challenging field of law, and the Master’s specialisation so broad and interesting. Experts in insolvency also need to deal with other fields such as corporate law, commercial law, administrative law and labour law.
At Radboud University and Nottingham Trent University we take a holistic approach to insolvency law while at the same time providing a level of practical detail through real-world scenarios. Career prospects

This Master’s specialisation is primarily designed for students who wish to pursue an international legal career in the area of insolvency law. It offers a thorough and broad education in insolvency law that includes corporate law, commercial law, labour law, personal bankruptcy law and competition law. And because it’s part of the European Law programme at Radboud University, you will also gain a good understanding of the internal and external markets of the European Union and the position of Europe in the world.

Job positions

As far as job positions go, it is seldom that you will find job positions advertised for insolvency law experts. That is not to say that these experts aren't highly sought after, especially since the start of the economic crisis. However, insolvency law experts will usually be part of a banking or corporate litigation team.
Graduates of Insolvency Law can expect to find a wide variety of employment prospects. You could work for financial institutions, multinationals and listed companies as well as governmental institutions and NGOs. There is also a high demand within the legal profession and judiciary for lawyers with thorough knowledge of insolvency law.

Our approach to this field

Besides the required knowledge of theories in Corporate, European and Insolvency law, and of insolvency law reform and policy, this specialisation specifically focuses on two aspects within the field of insolvency law:

1. Comparing national laws
When a company is in need of a corporate rescue, it has the possibility to use the legal instruments of several jurisdictions, not just the one in which it is located. This is known as forum shopping or regulatory arbitrage. To optimally do this, you need very good insight as to what’s out there. During this Master’s we teach students the basics they need to know to be able to compare the legal possibilities of several (European) countries.

2. Understanding the international consequences
If a company in, for example, the Netherlands goes bankrupt, what effect does this have in other countries? This dual Master’s teaches you how you can oversee the possible international consequences of relevant actions.

There's the annual IOSH Student Research Poster Competition for students on BSc or MSc degree courses (in occupational safety and health or a cognate subject). Students are entered into the competition by their course tutor.

Finalists have the opportunity to showcase their research at the IOSH Conference and Safety & Health Expo in London, and also receive a cash prize. A number of our MSc graduates have been winners and runners-up.

Entry requirements

This programme is designed for people who already have a suitable combination of academic ability, subject knowledge and work experience in the general area of occupational health and safety.

Admission to the programme is determined by both academic and work experience criteria to reflect the non-traditional routes into the health and safety profession.

Applicants holding a recognised University degree and a level 3 Health and Safety Qualification (NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent) will be eligible to join the Safety and Risk Management Programme at Postgraduate Certificate level.

Applicants who do not satisfy the above will be assessed for admission on the basis of their portfolio of courses undertaken and relevant work experience.

Those seeking admission with advanced standing may include prior learning in recognised courses or work-based experience as entry criteria. Further information is available on request.

Entry to the Postgraduate Diploma will normally follow successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate. Students who have gained equivalent academic qualifications at Postgraduate Certificate level may be accepted onto the course.

Robots have the potential to revolutionise society and the economy, working for us, beside us, and interacting with us. This EPSRC-sponsored programme will produce graduates with the technical skills and industry awareness to create an innovation pipeline from academic research to global markets.

The robotics and autonomous systems area has been highlighted by the UK Government in 2013 as one of the eight Great Technologies that underpin the UK's Industrial Strategy for jobs and growth. Key application areas include manufacturing, assistive and medical robots, offshore energy, environmental monitoring, search and rescue, defence, and support for the ageing population.

The University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University are jointly offering this innovative four-year PhD training programme, which combines a strong general grounding in current theory, methods and applications with flexibility for individualised study and a specialised PhD project.

Robotics and autonomous systems are increasingly studied beyond the range of classical engineering. Today robots represent one of the main areas of application of computer science and provide challenges for mathematics and natural science.

It is impossible to imagine transportation, warehousing, safety systems, space and marine exploration, prosthetics, and many other areas of industry, technology and science without robots. Robots are used in theoretical biology and the neurosciences as a model of behaviour.

Areas of interest specific to the center include: movement control, planning, decision making, bio- and neurorobotics, human-robot interaction, healthcare applications, robot soccer, neuroprosthetics, underwater robotics, bipedal walking, service robots, robotic co-workers, computer vision, speech processing, computer animation realistic simulations, and machine learning.

Training and support

Our four-year PhD programme combines Masters level coursework and project work with independent PhD-level research.

In the first year, you will undertake four or five masters level courses, spread throughout robotics, machine learning, computational neuroscience, computer architectures, statistics, optimization, sensorics, dynamics, mechanics, image processing, signal processing, modelling, animation, artificial intelligence, and related areas. You will also undertake a significant introductory research project. (Students with previous masters-level work in these areas may request to take less courses and a larger project.)

At the end of the first year, successful students will be awarded an MSc by Research by the University of Edinburgh. From this basis, the subsequent three years will be spent developing and pursuing a PhD research project, under the close supervision of your primary and secondary supervisors. The PhD will be awarded jointly by the University of Edinburgh and the Heriot-Watt University.

You will have opportunities for three to six month internships with leading companies in your area, and to participate in our industrial engagement programme, exchanging ideas and challenges with our sponsor companies.

Throughout your studies, you will participate in our regular programmes of seminars, short talks and brainstorming sessions, and benefit from our pastoral mentoring schemes.
