The programme is co-organised by Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), offering students the possibility to obtain a double master's degree at the end of the programme. The first year of courses is taught at the ULB Engineering Campus in Brussels, while the second year is taught at VUB.

The Master of Science in Architecture trains designers to realize the synergy between the engineering and the architecture disciplines.

The programme provides students with an advanced level of knowledge and insight and makes them proficient in the creative and inventive use of the engineering and architectural knowledge in a complex architectural design.

The training is characterized by the integration of scientific research in education. The design studio acts as a crystallization point in the application of knowledge with respect to architectural design, structural design, installation techniques and urban planning. Given the complex and more advanced nature of architectural design at Master level, it requires the interaction between various disciplines combined with a scientific attitude.

The programme prepares students to a wide range of job profiles such as architectural and structural engineer, project manager, consultant, employee or executive in an architectural or engineer office, supervisor of the built heritage, policy maker for urban planning, researcher and others.

The programme focuses on each institution's strengths: International and European Law in Leuven and Arbitration Law, Financial Law and Human Rights in Zurich. Switzerland is a centre of arbitration and banking, and many international institutions are based here.

Upon completion of the programme, students receive a double degree - one from KU Leuven and another from the University of Zurich. A double degree from two leading law faculties in Europe will be of enormous added value for your future professional career in an international context.

1) Behavioural and Movement Ecology

Studying adaptations, and the selective pressures in the social and ecological environment that bring them about. We specialise in the movement ecology of individuals and collectives and can provide specialist research training to understand the role of the environment in structuring the properties of animal movement and behaviour.

2) Evolutionary and Molecular Biology

Understanding the diversity of life from a molecular perspective. We use the latest genetic and genomics techniques to address key questions in ecology, behaviour and conservation from an evolutionary perspective in a range of non-model organisms, from fungi to plants and animals.

3) Marine Biology, Fisheries and Aquaculture

From developing new techniques in fish husbandry and rearing of commercially important aquaculture species, to research in food and fuel security, low carbon technologies, biogeochemical cycles and climate change. Specialist research training can be provided on a diverse range of temperate to tropical aquatic organisms, from microplankton to invertebrates to fish, inhabiting marine to freshwater environments.

4) Mathematical and Statistical Ecology

Research that complements the full range of our academic expertise, from theoretical investigations of ecosystem complexity, stoichiometric ecology, pattern formation and animal movement, to practical agricultural applications and the operation of micro-algal biotechnology.

5) Population and Community Ecology

Combining experimental and theoretical approaches to develop our understanding of how species interactions with their environment (including other species) generate the spatial-temporal biodiversity patterns we observe in nature. Study systems include plankton ecosystems, coastal ecosystem functioning, disease control, conservation, and the impact of spatial-temporal environmental variation on community dynamics.

6) Whole Organism Biology

Our staff comprises world-leading experts on a range of organisms studied around the world, and welcome students who want to develop projects around such species.

7) Wildlife Diseases and Pest Control

Research focused on developing natural agents and solutions for the control of wildlife diseases and invertebrate pests that impact on food security and human and animal health. Research training provided in disease detection methods, disease management, and the socioeconomic benefits of pest control.

Our excellent facilities include a unique built Animal Movement Visualisation Suite (£1.35m), incorporating an electronic wall linked to a computer-tesla cluster for high-speed processing and visualisation of complex accelerometry and magnetometry data derived from animals. Coupled with this facility is the Electronics Lab with capacity for research, development and realisation of animal tags with new capacities (sensors, energy-harvesting systems, miniaturization, 3-D printing of housings etc.); a custom-designed 18m on coastal research vessel; a recent investment of £4.2m on a new suite of state-of-the art Science laboratories; and the £2m unique Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Research (CSAR) with a 750 m2 controlled environment building, with programmable recirculating aquatic systems, unique within the UK’s higher-education sector. These are tailored for research on a diverse range of organisms, ranging from temperate to tropical and marine to freshwater. Coupled with this are nutrient and biochemical analytical capabilities.

Theoretical/mathematical research uses advanced university computing facilities that includes high-end graphics workstations, high-speed network links and the Blue Ice supercomputer located at the Mike Barnsley Centre for Climatic Change Research.

Several dedicated Bioscience labs housed within our grade 2 listed Wallace Building recently benefitted from a £4.2 million renovation programme, providing world-class research facilities that includes a specialist molecular ecology lab and a dedicated arthropod facility.

93.8% of our research outputs were regarded as world-leading or internationally excellent and Swansea Biosciences had the highest percentage of publications judged ‘world-leading’ in the sector. Course overview

This is an approved two-year postgraduate qualification that leads towards professional registration as a social worker.

To register as a social worker, you will need a qualification that is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This Masters has been approved by the HCPC and endorsed by the College of Social Work so you can be sure that successful completion of the course will mean that you meet professional standards of proficiency.

Our course combines both practice and theory. We organise two main placements for you, the first of 70 days and the second of 100 days. There is in-depth preparation before the placements and you will be assigned a practice educator on placement who will provide on-going supervision as you work with people with a range of needs including those who are experiencing crisis or social exclusion.

We have an excellent partnership with employers across public/voluntary and private sectors to provide high quality placements – as endorsed by The College of Social Work.

Theory-based taught modules include ‘The Social Work Context’, ‘Theories and Models for Social Work Practice’ and ‘Critical Perspectives in Social Work Practice’. The Masters dissertation is an excellent opportunity to explore a specific issue in social work.

Flexible study options

This programme can be studied full-time, part-time or via Independent Distance Learning (IDL), ideal for those in employment or with other commitments, providing flexible study options that fit around work or family. As an IDL student you will not be required to attend any lectures, tutorials or other events at any of Heriot-Watt University’s campuses, and you can also arrange to sit examinations in a location close to you.

Those who are close to our Dubai Campus will, in addition, benefit from our local support in the form of dissertation supervision and access to licensed software programmes and subscribed literatures, depending on availability.

Professional recognition

Heriot-Watt's Sustainable Building Design MSc has been accredited as a further learning programme at the postgraduate level to meet the academic requirement for Chartered Engineers (CEng, UK) by both the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Energy Institute (EI) and also for Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv UK) by the Energy Institute.

English language requirements

If English is not the applicant’s first language a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required with all elements passed at 6.0 or above.

Applicants who have previously successfully completed programmes delivered in the medium of English language may be considered and will be required to provide documentary evidence of this. Examples would be secondary school education or undergraduate degree programme. A minimum of at least one year of full time study (or equivalent) in the medium of English language will be required.

COURSE SUMMARY

This is a unique podiatry programme at master’s level leading to Health and Care Profession Council registration. Currently the only programme in the UK.

This is a 3 year full-time programme in which you will be developing practical skills with patients from the first semester (in the University in-house clinics) and then on placement within health services in subsequent years. The placements will be in wide variety of specialisms and you will be supervised by experienced and specialist podiatrists. Aligned with this is the academic component of acquisition of knowledge, the development of critical enquiry, research and application of research into practice. You will be taught by national and internationally recognised academics who are subject specialists. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in the Foot and Ankle Research Programme, led by Professor Chris Nester. You will be taught by and have opportunity to work with senior post-doctoral researchers who, have published in peer reviewed journals and written books aligned to the profession. You will be supported by academic, personal tutors and placement supervisors in the development of skills for critical reflection in order to ensure ongoing professional and personal development, and enhance employability.

COURSE DETAILS

This non-standard 3 year full time programme will provide you with a master’s level academic qualification together with a professional practice qualification, which is a pre-requisite for registration to the Health and Care Professions Council. It will provide you with the knowledge, skills and attributes to become leaders in the podiatry profession with research and/or the clinical roles.

The ethos of the programme is to enhance:

  • application of research into clinical practice
  • application of knowledge into practice through mentorship/teaching
  • application of experience of practice into knowledge
  • escalation of professional and academic development

TEACHING

  • Lectures - will provide foundation material for further study as well as guest lectures by key individuals from practice, service users & carers and academia to ensure students are exposed to the wider national and international context of podiatry.
  • Individual and group tutorials - will enable peer learning to take place as well as more focused individual learning needs.
  • Critical Reflection on practice experience and ongoing personal and professional development through PDP/log book.
  • Self- directed learning - essential for development of key skills and independence in choice of learning material.
  • Teaching and learning experience in clinical practice will include exposure to a range of clinical placements where students learning will be facilitated by experienced practitioners in specific fields of practice, including other members of health and social care professions.

Podiatry clinic

Our podiatry clinic adds a cutting-edge to your training, as well as providing a valuable asset to the local community.

The clinic includes:

Clinical gait analysis and research facility

This laboratory was part of a £1.5 million renovation of the podiatry clinical education and research spaces. The laboratory hosts the Salford Gait Analysis Service which provides quantitative gait analysis and consultation services for four National Health Service Trusts in the Manchester area.

The service supports the care of children with cerebral palsy by enabling assessment of their gait to input to their care pathways. We also offer gait and human movement assessment related to amputees, neuromuscular disorders (such as stroke) and a range of orthopaedics disorders.

The equipment includes:

  • 10 Qualisys OQUS motion analysis cameras
  • Four AMTI force plates embedded into the floor
  • Custom stairs that integrate with the force plates are available
  • Visual 3D real-time analysis software
  • Eight channel Noraxon Telemyo G2T wireless EMG system with associated foot switches and accelerometry
  • Tekscan pressure system.

Human movement laboratory

This is the original gait laboratory within the University, and is located adjacent to the prosthetics and orthotics clinical suite and technical workshops.

This lab is used for research, clinical and educational work and has:

  • 10 camera Vicon 612 motion analysis system
  • Two Kistler force plates (embedded into the floor)
  • Two Kistler force plates located in a purpose built portable walkway
  • 12 Xsens inertial measuring units
  • One eight-channel MIE telemetric electromyography system
  • Visual 3D real-time analysis software
  • ORLAU video vector generator.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Currently, BSc (Hons) students work within NHS services or the independent sector.

With this new programme it is anticipated that in addition to the above, the students will increase their employability in these areas and also increase their career progression. It is also anticipated that students may subsequently want to continue in education to complete PhD studies or to gain employment in the commercial sector.
