- Economics of renewable energy
This course gives an understanding of the economic principles and mechanisms which affect energy markets today. It covers price mechanisms, the economics of extracting energy and the cost-efficiency of renewable energy technologies. You will learn about economic instruments used by policy-makers to address environment and energy issues, economic incentives to stimulate renewable energy development and about environmental valuation.

- Environmental Policy & Risk
This course explores the legal and policy context in which renewable energy is being exploited. You will gain an understanding of international law, particularly the Law of the Sea, property rights and how these relate to different energy resources. The course also looks at regulatory issues at the international, European and UK level, which affect how energy developments are taken forward, as well as risk assessment and management in the context of renewable energy developments.

- Environmental Processes
Particularly for those without a natural science background, this course provides a broad overview of the environmental processes which are fundamental to an understanding of renewable energy resources and their exploitation. You will study energy flows in the environment, environmental disturbance associated with energy use, and an introduction to the science of climate change. You will also learn about ecosystems and ecological processes including population dynamics and how ecosystems affect and interact with energy generation.

- Renewable Technology I: Generation
This course explores how energy is extracted from natural resources: solar, biomass, hydro, wind, wave and tide. It examines how to assess and measure the resources, and the engineering solutions which have been developed to extract energy from them. You will develop an understanding of the technical challenges and current issues affecting the future development of the renewable energy sector.

- Renewable Technology II: Integration
This course explores the technical aspects of generating renewable energy and integrating it into distribution networks. You will learn about the electricity grid and how electrical power and distribution systems work. You will find out about different renewable fuel sources and end uses, and the challenges of energy storage.

- Development Appraisal
Looking at what happens when renewable energy technologies are deployed, this course examines development constraints and opportunities: policy and regulatory issues (including strategic environmental assessment, environmental impact assessment, landscape assessment, capacity issues and the planning system). It also looks at the financial aspects (valuation of capital assets, financing projects and the costs of generating electricity) and at project management.

- Development Project
This is a team project, where students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned through the other courses in relation to a hypothetical project. You have to look at a range of issues including resource assessment, site selection, development layout, consents, planning and economic appraisal, applying the knowledge and tools you have studied.

- Optional design project
For students who can demonstrate existing knowledge covered by one of the courses, there is the option of understanding a design project supervised by one of our engineers.

- Dissertation
This research project (equivalent in assessment to 4 taught courses) allows you to focus on a specific area of interest, with opportunities to collaborate with businesses and other stakeholders. You choose your dissertation subject, in discussion with your supervisor.

Teaching

Students are introduced to subject material, including key concepts, information and approaches, through a mixture of standard lectures and seminars, laboratory practical, field work, self-study and individual research reports. Supporting material isavailable online. The aim is to challenge students and inspire them to expand their own knowledge and understanding.

Preparation for work is achieved through the development of 'soft' skills such as communication, planning, management and team work. In addition, guest speakers from industries provide a valuable insight into the real world of renewable energy.

Many of the practical activities in which the students engage, develop into enjoyable experiences. For example, working in teams for laboratory and field work and site visits. We encourage students to develop personal responsibility and contribution throughout the course. Many elements of coursework involve, and reward, the use of initiative and imagination. Some of the projects may be linked with research in CEBER, CAPF and BIPS research centres.

1 Year Full-Time: The taught element of the course (September to April) is delivered by a combination of lectures, tutorials and group/seminar work. From May to September students undertake the dissertation.

3-5 Years Distance Learning: The programme is designed to enable you to conduct most of your studies at home, in your own time and at your own pace. Students are supplied with a study pack in the form of text books and CD-ROMs; cut-off dates for receipt of assignments are specified at the beginning of each stage. Examinations can be taken either at Brunel University London or in the country you are resident in. The dissertation is carried out in one year.

Modules are assessed either by formal examination, written assignments or a combination of the two.

Each module is assessed either by formal examination, written assignments or a combination of the two. Cut-off dates for receipt of assignments are specified at the beginning of the academic year. Examinations are normally taken in May. The MSc dissertation project leading to submission of the MSc Dissertation is normally carried out over four months (FT students) or one year (DL students).

We have extensive and well-equipped laboratories, particular areas of strength being in fluid and biofluid mechanics, IC engines, vibrations, building service engineering, and structural testing. Our computing facilities are diverse and are readily available to all students. The University is fully networked with both Sun workstations and PCs. About Mechanical Engineering at Brunel
Mechanical Engineering offers a number of MSc courses all accredited by professional institutes as appropriate additional academic study (further learning) for those seeking to become qualified to register as Chartered Engineers (CEng). Accrediting professional institutes vary by course and include the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Energy Institute (EI) and Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

This MSc program will be compliant with the further learning requirements of UK-SPEC. Accreditation will be sought from the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE) and Energy Institute. Course details

The taught modules in the first period are compulsory and are designed to provide you with a broad background on marine renewable as well as a solid basis for the option modules in period two. You’ll undertake three modules in period one that provide a background in marine renewable energy: introduction to marine renewable energy, economics, law and policy for marine renewable energy, research skills and research methods. In period two you can choose three options from a choice of five: assessment of coastal resources and impacts, marine planning, economics of the marine environment, mechanics of marine renewable energy structures, and wave and current modelling for marine renewable energy. During period three you’ll undertake a research project and dissertation. Due to the extensive staff research expertise there is a wide range of potential projects spanning marine science, engineering and socio-economics. With declining fossil energy resources, environmental pollution and climate change, the need for sustainable energy supply is becoming more important. The international community has agreed upon the use of renewable energy as an instrument towards a sustainable energy development. Management of energy resources and technologies is a global issue and it needs well trained workforce – from policy level to practitioner level.

The objective of the program is to form such experts. Focusing on developing countries in the tropics and subtropics the MSc. Renewable Energy Management emphasizes a holistic approach considering both technical and socioeconomic aspects of energy management. Participants are provided with appropriate knowledge, methods and skills to analyze current problems in the field of renewable energy usage and related sectors.

Target groups of the program are recently graduated professionals with working experience in public or private institutions, authorities and enterprises of the energy sector. The applicants should be active in or dealing with energy or natural resources management and have an interest in learning and working in an intercultural and multidisciplinary environment.

The master program “Renewable Energy Management” (REM) provides a practice oriented and skills-based learning experience in which students develop their capacity for critical thinking, and creative problem solving. It addresses bachelor’s degree holders principally in Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences with experience in the area of energy, who aim to deepen their knowledge in Renewable Energy Resources Management and wish to acquire management and leadership skills as well as regional and intercultural competences. These experts should have a sound knowledge base in one of the many fields of renewable energy management. They ought to be able to assess renewable energy resources and develop appropriate solutions considering the complex linkages of renewable energy with economic, social and ecological aspects.

Contents

The studies cover a period of four semesters. The fourth semester is dedicated to the master thesis.

The didactic concept consists of two components: a technical and a social. The technical component provides the participants with the relevant and up to date knowledge necessary to take decisions towards a sustainable management of natural resources. The social component is equally important and aims at equipping the participants with the communicative, intercultural and managerial skills necessary to take up leadership positions in the natural resources sector and to work effectively in the framework of international cooperation.

Some of the core modules covered in this master include: Management of natural resources systems, International Cooperation and Development, Economics and governance. These are complimented by Methods and Tools such as using the Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing, environmental monitoring and Statistics, and learning to apply the knowledge in Projects.

The region faces serious challenges such as climate change and natural disasters; and under conditions of population growth, social conflict, urbanization and industrialization efficient environmental policies and programs are required to sustainably manage the natural resources.

The objective of the double degree master program is to qualify professionals and experts in the field of environmental and natural resources management with the necessary skills, tools and methods in the context of international cooperation with a clear focus on German/European Latin American cooperation. Graduates are able to analyze and solve complex environmental problems in their specific socio-cultural and political contexts, given the technical and economic potentials of both regions.

The ENREM program is based on the curricula of the two accredited master programs:

• “Maestria en Ciencias Ambientales”at the Programa Multidisciplinario de Posgrado en Ciencias Ambientales (PMPCA) at University San Luis Potosí (UASLP) in Mexico and
• “Natural Resources Management and Development” at the Institute for Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ITT) at TH Köln - University of Applied Sciences in Germany.

The ENREM Master program targets professionals of different academic backgrounds with experience related to the natural resources sector. They seek to deepen their knowledge in Environment and Resources Management and wish to acquire management and leadership skills as well as regional and intercultural competences within the context of international – especially German-Latin American cooperation – and at the same time provide their work experience and regional knowledge to the mutual learning and intercultural environment.

In an interdisciplinary learning environment, students diversify their knowledge and build the capacity to think transdisciplinarily and laterally, as well as team and leadership skills, among them intercultural abilities. These competencies shall equip the graduates with the ability to analyze, characterize and solve complex problems of environmental and natural resources management and well as foster sustainable development, all in line with the SDGs agenda.

Contents

The double degree master program runs for four semesters and starts in winter term (august) of each year. The first two semesters will take place in San Luis Potosí (Mexico), the third in Cologne (Germany) and the last semester is exclusively for the development of the master thesis project either in Mexico, another Latin American Country or Germany depending in the thesis topic.

Courses in Mexico are mainly implemented in Spanish while the official teaching language at ITT is English.

The course is structured through mandatory and elective modules, and is accompanied by practical experiences, exercises, team projects and seminars throughout the program.

The mandatory modules are organized in Core Modules and Project Modules, these modules provides the student with a general overview of different disciplines relevant to natural resources. The elective modules in the second and third semester are organized into two blocks, one in their area of “specialization elective related to the topics of natural resources management” and the other from the “Methods and Tools”.

Each of the two partner universities has a different focus related to the following areas:
• UASLP, Mexico: Prevention and Control, Environmental Assessment, Renewable Natural Resources, Environmental Management, Environmental and Health.
• TH Köln, Germany: Environmental and Land use Management, Urban and Regional Management complemented by Integrated Water Resources Management and/ or Renewable Energy Management

Normally students are required to obtain 180 Master's level credits in these modules to become a Master of Science in Renewable Energy Systems Technology graduate. However optional leave awards of Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) are possible.

How you will learn

All of our renewable energy MSc Modules consist of a series of Study Units, each covering a specific subject area (see programme modules). Instead of face-to-face lectures and tutorials, the main learning routes for distance learning students are via the University’s virtual learning environment (LEARN). The learning resources for each Study Unit include:

In addition there are several important communication features built into LEARN which include:

How is the course taught?

Taught at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), which pioneered sustainability practice and theory in the UK, this is the first MSc course to properly integrate the social, political, economic and practical aspects of sustainable food and natural resources production. Hands-on learning

At CAT, hands-on learning takes place side by side with academic study. Residential on-site block learning weeks are taught at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), a truly unique and inspiring learning environment. Nestled in a disused slate quarry on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, CAT is a living laboratory for paractical, sustainable solutions. Flexibility

It is a flexible degree, taught in blocks taken either with an intensive residential stay of five or six nights at the centre, or by distance learning. How is the course taught?

Taught at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), which pioneered sustainability practice and theory in the UK, this is the first MSc course to properly integrate the social, political, economic and practical aspects of sustainable food and natural resources production. This Masters degree tackles these themes through a combination of academic study, discussion and hands-on practical work. Our MSc programme is taught either by distance learning or through residential blocks in one of the most innovative environmental buildings in the UK, or via a mixture of the two.

A flexible Masters degree designed to develop a rigorous understanding of transformational responses to the pervasive effects that economic structures and environmental change are having on diet, health, sustainability and community empowerment. The course will cover globalisation, corporate and economic control, increasing global population and the effects of industry-scale agriculture and materials production on ecosystems and our environment.

Successful completion of the programme MSc Sustainable Food and Natural Resources at the Centre for Alternative Technology leads to the award of Master of Science (MSc) by Liverpool John Moores University (subject to validation by Liverpool John Moores University).

The programme uses the concepts of sustainability and transformational adaptation to frame an understanding of sustainable food and resources management across scales, including cities, communities, farms, industry and the individual.
You will study aspects of food and natural resource management in a broad sustainability context through focused, intensive module weeks that will help you understand:

• ecosystems and biodiversity;
• land and resources in cities;
• sustainable materials, supply chains and energy provision;
• the science of food and growing;
• political and economic aspects;
• sustainable food management, diet and health.

This course is subject to validation by the Liverpool John Moores University.

Who is the course for?

This Masters degree is aimed at graduates who want to effect change in the way our natural resources are managed, produced and distributed.
It will include key inputs from eminent practitioners such as Professor Tim Lang (Centre for Food Policy), Colin Tudge (Campaign for Real Farming) and Peter Harper (a pioneer of sustainable growing and resource management), and will empower you with the tools to find employment in environmental NGOs, government bodies, consultancy, forestry and land management, or to launch your own environmental enterprises.
The MSc programme provides the opportunity to develop deep understanding, confidence, aptitude and critical thinking in the management of nature and its resources. The course has a strong emphasis on the practical application of theoretical learning, with students given the opportunity to develop their own practical projects.

Hands-on learning

At CAT, hands-on learning takes place side by side with academic study. Residential on-site block learning weeks are taught at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), a truly unique and inspiring learning environment. Nestled in a disused slate quarry on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, CAT is a living laboratory for paractical, sustainable solutions. It contains some of the most innovative and renowned environmentally conscious buildings in the country, as well as one of the most diverse range of installed renewable technologies, on site water and sewage treatment, sustainably managed woodland and acres of organic gardens.

Flexibility

It is a flexible degree, taught in blocks taken either with an intensive residential stay of five or six nights at the centre, or by distance learning. MSc students are free to choose between these teaching modes for every module. There is a choice of modules, taken over one year or two – meaning the degree can be part time. It is a masters degree designed to give you the best possible experience whilst also meshing neatly with the pressures of modern professional and family life.

The UK Governments Low Carbon Transition Plan details how the Government plans to meet its 2020 GHG emissions targets. It predicts that as a result of its actions that 1.2 million green jobs will be created and 40% of electricity production will be from low carbon resources. It is predicted that £110bn of investment will be necessary to meet the targets as currently set out. The picture is similar across the EU and the rest of the world. There is a significant need for individuals with the expertise necessary to help meet those targets.

This MSc in Renewable Energy and Resource Management will provide the wealth of knowledge and skills needed for employment in a range of public and fast-growing commercial green sector roles. Your studies will increase your knowledge and understanding of the generation and provision of renewable energy, hydrogen, water, wastewater treatment and solid wastes management. The subjects taught within the MSc are underpinned by high quality research which was rated as being mainly internationally excellent or world leading in RAE 2008. This included research in hydrogen energy, bio-energy, anaerobic digestion, process monitoring and control, combustion processes, and waste and wastewater treatment systems.

Learning and teaching methods

Full-time students spend about 12 hours in lectures, seminars, tutorials, and computing and laboratory-based practical sessions each week, plus research and background reading. We have an exciting programme of site visits and fieldwork trips.

This MSc is designed to develop cutting-edge knowledge and high-level practical skills relevant to many areas of postgraduate employment, particularly managerial, regulatory, scientific and technological roles related to energy and the environment. Assessment methods

The taught modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examinations. The project is assessed by a written dissertation and an oral examination (viva voce).

These programmes are for students and professionals who wish to acquire improved expertise and knowledge in natural resources. The programme explores the ways in which developmental needs can be met through better understanding and improved management of renewable natural resources, without placing unsustainable demands on the environment.

The emphasis is on tropical applications, the Natural Resources Institutes principal area of expertise.

The MSc by Research consists of an extended research project and a limited number of taught courses and is available for students with the appropriate background and interest and is based on suitable academic performance in their first term of studies. The programme provides students with an overview and awareness of natural resources, their management and sustainable development, and provides training which enables students to apply the principles of sustainable natural resource management to their own disciplines.

Courses will be selected from the portfolio offered through the MSc Sustainable Environmental Management and MSc Agriculture for Sustainable Development.

Energy is the largest and one of the most dynamic industry sectors. It raises many challenges both politically and technically, from traditional exploration and production of fossil fuels to more recent mining extraction methods (hydraulic fracturing or 'fracking'), renewables and environmental protection. Queen Mary is only one of a few universities in the world to offer an LLM in Energy and Natural Resources Law and this programme builds upon well-established areas at Queen Mary, such as Commercial Law, Dispute Resolution, Environmental Law and Regulation.

All these constituent elements of Energy and Natural Resources law are approached through a comparative and international lens and prepare students to enter practice as regulators, lawyers in private practice of public sector lawyers. You will also benefit from the current research, consultancy work and events undertaken and held by the Energy and Natural Resources Law Institute (ENRLI) at Queen Mary.
