About the Course

Embedded processors form a core component of an enormous range of systems - from aircraft, passenger cars and medical equipment, to children's toys, DVD players and washing machines. The growth in the power and features of processors has helped to drive the semiconductor industry from start-up less than 60 years ago to more than £150 billion in annual revenue today. The embedded market is now estimated to be worth around 100 times the ‘desktop’ market, and is forecast to grow exponentially over the next decade.

This MSc is delivered through 'blended learning': a combination of distance learning and campus study in Leicester (six one-week residentials over two years).

You will gain the state-of-the-art skill set needed to deal with the challenges of producing flexible, robust, reliable, and cost-effective embedded systems in applicable industrial domains. We will focus on currently relevant tools and best practice, and cover the development of both COTS (commercial off the shelf) systems and bespoke designs based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays. We will also explore large scale embedded systems development and maintenance.

Distributed and networked computation is now the paradigm that underpins the software-enabled systems that are proliferating in the modern world, with huge impact in the economy and society, from the sensor and actuator networks that are now connecting cities, to cyberphysical systems, to patient-centred healthcare, to disaster-recovery systems.

This new Masters course will educate and train you in the fundamental principles, methods and techniques required for developing such systems. Given the number of elective modules offered, you will be able to acquire further skills in one or more of Cloud Computing, Data Analytics and Information Security.

This course will develop a highly analytical approach to problem solving and a strong background in distributed and networked systems, fault-tolerance and data replication techniques, distributed coordination and time-synchronisation techniques (leader-election, consensus, and clock synchronisation), data communication protocols and software stacks for wireless, sensor, and ad hoc networking technologies in virtualisation, and cloud computing technologies.

Teaching and learning

Software Engineering MSc is available full-time (12 months) as well as part-time (up to 28 months).

The MSc in Software Engineering aims to meet the significant demand for graduates with a good knowledge of computing. This demand arises from consultancies, software houses, major software users such as banks, large manufacturers, retailers, and the public services, defence, aerospace and telecommunications companies.

Typical entrants to the course have a degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, and wish to either move into the software engineering field or to the development of software for their current field. According to the PMI, project management is one of the fastest growing professions worldwide and the need for project management professionals is growing on every continent. Regardless of where you are from, our MSc in Project Management will equip you with both intellectual and practical skills to allow you to become a project management professional in virtually any field of work.

This course is designed to teach project management to people from any discipline. Unlike many other project management courses, you do not need an engineering or technical background to apply. A large number of our students are from business, arts and other backgrounds.

Teaching Method

Teaching across our postgraduate programmes is through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and seminars. You will study the traditional areas of exercise physiology, psychology, biomechanics and sport and exercise nutrition, and at the end of your course you will complete a major independent study related to your specific interests in sport and exercise science. This part-time course leads to a Masters qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). English is one of the top three languages spoken worldwide, along with Mandarin and Spanish, and so a TESOL course is a valuable asset for people who want to live and work in other countries.

This TESOL course not only covers theoretical aspects, but also includes a practical teaching module. As part of this, you will learn how to prepare lesson plans and to teach your peers at Sunderland.

Our TESOL MA will give you in-depth understanding of how English is taught to speakers of other languages internationally.
