One of our key teaching resources is a University-owned Georgian terraced house. You also have the opportunity to use the latest high-tech non-destructive testing equipment including flexible endoscopes, borescopes and thermal imaging cameras for detecting heat loss – all of which you can use in practical projects and the dissertation module.

You benefit from a range of teaching, learning and assessment techniques. Intensive study weeks allow you to work on complex, professional briefs with other students in multi-disciplinary practice. One of the modules is an international project which has taken place in various locations including Istanbul, Shanghai and Toronto with assistance from international surveying firms.

The majority of teaching takes place within a newly refurbished, dedicated buildings at our City Campus. The course is fully supported by online resources that allow students to learn flexibly in addition to face-to-face teaching.

Ideal if you are working in the construction industry, this online course will allow you to fit your studies around your work and home commitments. You will be able to access our Virtual Learning Environment in your own time and also benefit from the same support our onsite students receive.

This course is all about interactive learning, so you will have the opportunity to share your experiences with your tutors and fellow students through group discussions. Mark worked in the construction industry for more than 20 years and is still involved with small projects involving budgets of between £50,000 and £250,000. His experience extends from working on new build leisure projects to refurbishment works on listed buildings such as Leeds Town Hall. Mark is currently studying for a PhD which focuses on suspended ceilings in theatres, an issue which has become more significant since the collapse of the Apollo Theatre ceiling in December 2013.

COURSE SUMMARY

Are you new to property or looking to pursue a career in the field? If so, then this course was developed with you in mind. The programme of study will equip you with an excellent working knowledge of the commercial property market, including its relevance to national and international financial and  investment  markets.

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to develop a successful career in the corporate property industry. You will become professionally competent in applying advanced investment and appraisal techniques, and learn how to make sound property management decisions that take  into  account  legal, economic, facilities management and planning variables.

Studying this course will equip you with knowledge and expertise in the valuation and management of urban land and buildings in both public and private ownership. There is also a focus on IT and its application to the property industry, as well as the environmental considerations of real estate development  and  management.

The full Masters award is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), allowing exemption from their academic entry requirements, as well as ensuring that you will be educated to the highest industry standards.

COURSE DETAILS

By undertaking this course you will learn about:

  • The workings of the commercial property market and its relevance to national and international financial and investment markets
  • Advanced current investment and appraisal techniques
  • Legal, economic, planning, technical and facilities management factors in property management decision making
  • IT in the property industry
  • Environmental considerations of real estate development and management

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course can be studied full-time on campus or part-time by distance learning. Admission onto the course is in September or January.

The Masters award consists of four taught modules followed by a dissertation. The PgDip requires the completion of the four taught modules and the Pg Cert requires the completion of two taught modules. All modules are delivered over a 15 week period within one semester and are assessed through coursework,  there  are no exams. 

FOR THE FULL-TIME STUDY OPTION:

You will study two 30 credit taught modules in each of your first two semesters on campus, these are designed to give you the core knowledge required for real estate and property management. In the final semester you will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits.

DISTANCE LEARNING STUDY OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME MODES:

For students who study distance learning at full-time mode, two 30 credit taught modules are studied per semester. You will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits at the final semester.

For the students who study distance learning at part-time mode, one 30 credit taught module is studied per semester. You will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits at the final two semesters.

Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world issues aligned to your workplace and job role. Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions. The dissertation module is also delivered online and incorporates extensive tutor engagement and support.

TEACHING

On-campus study comprises lectures, tutorials and project work.

Lectures introduce the core knowledge for each module. Tutorials provide a forum for discussion and debate with personalised instruction from tutors and project work is your chance to use research and other techniques to develop solutions to prescribed tasks. Throughout the course, experts from various fields are invited to deliver guest lectures and field trips are organised to give you an insight into the workings of the industry.

If you’re studying via distance learning, you’ll enjoy access to an internet-based learning environment backed up by intensive tutor support. Weekly online tutorials are led by tutors and encourage student interaction. Our online repository of learning material enables you to undertake self-directed study at your own convenience. Learning is driven by real-world problems with application to your workplace and job role.

ASSESSMENT

You will be assessed through written coursework (100%) and continuous informal assessment by your tutors.

With this qualification, you’ll be well placed to find rewarding work in the corporate property industry. You can apply the skills you’ll learn to act for clients on the purchase, letting, management and sale of all types of urban property, including shops, offices and industrial premises.

Our graduates are highly regarded by employers, enjoy excellent career prospects and have gone on to work within corporate, financial, government and private sectors to create property, investment and business solutions. They often find themselves specialising after an initial period in the field in areas such as the following: commercial estate agency, investment appraisal, property finance, development appraisal, property valuation, property management, strategic corporate real estate management and rating and taxation matters.

This course primarily equips you with knowledge and expertise in the valuation and management of urban land and buildings in both public and private ownership. In addition, advice may be sought by clients on matters relating to investment, finance, planning, development, refurbishment, landlord and tenant relationships and a wide range of other issues.

Employment opportunities are extensive and range from local property consultancies to positions in large, multi-office practices with regional, national and international representation. There are also many opportunities in the institutional and corporate sectors with organisations such as insurance companies, pension funds, property companies, multiple retailers and other major trading companies. Some local authorities and central government departments also maintain an 'in-house' team of property professionals.
