PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

With an increase in the number of undergraduate degrees offering the MChem qualification, our Chemistry MRes allows BSc graduates to become equally competitive by studying for an enhanced qualification that will set them apart throughout their career.

Our MRes qualification is also a convenient entry point into the UK academic system for overseas students, and many of our MRes graduates go on to successfully complete a PhD.

Our academics are at the forefront of their field, having recently discovered a method for the rapid detection of drugs from a fingerprint; and a naturally sourced, environmentally safe chemical for the treatment of an important agricultural pathogen.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year. It consists of three taught modules and a research project, which contributes 75 per cent of the final credits to the degree and includes the laboratory based research, library work, COSHH, record keeping and writing the dissertation.

We would normally expect the laboratory based part of the project to be, on average, two to three full days per week during the teaching semesters and five days per week during non-teaching times (for example, over the Christmas, Easter and summer breaks).

They have taken a range of positions (Records Manager, Cataloguer, Collections Development Officer and Heritage Activities Manager), and their destinations include The National Archives, Hertfordshire Archives, The National Gallery, Downing College Cambridge, and Channel 4. The MSc programme in Structural Engineering is designed to attract both international and home students, who wish to pursue their career in civil and structural engineering. To meet the increasing demand for structural engineers to design more safe, economic and environmental friendly buildings, the programme content has specifically been designed to give a thorough grounding on current practice with regards to dealing with structural fire and earthquake resistances and design of carbon neutral buildings.

Aims

Structural engineering is a profession that provides a tremendous opportunity to make a real difference to people's lives and their environment. In the current century, climate change is an increasingly important issue which needs to be tackled - and the role of the structural engineer in tackling climate change is immense.

To meet these challenges, structural engineers need to combine traditional structural engineering expertise with an understanding of a wide range of issues related to design of zero carbon buildings. There is a significant shortage of structural engineers with the requisite knowledge, skills, and experience to deal efficiently with complex issues for designing structurally sound, elegantly simple and environmentally sustainable buildings. The skills shortage and its effects on the construction industry will be further exacerbated by the huge demand from some rising economic powers.

This new MSc programme has been developed in response to this growing need for graduates aware of current challenges in structural engineering. The primary aim of this programme is to create master’s degree graduates with qualities and transferable skills for demanding employment in the construction and civil engineering sector. The graduates will have the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development and acquiring new skills at the highest level.

The programme is currently taken full-time, over 12 months. Each taught module will count for 15 credits, approximating to 150 learning hours. The modules will be taught over the first eight months and during the final four months, students will conduct an individual research project worth 60 credits (Dissertation).

Our Philosophy

The philosophy behind the teaching and learning strategy we use is largely underpinned by high quality and accessible learning opportunities developing over the years by the University and the College, which are highly acclaimed standards and practices for learning and teaching.

In addition to teaching, the academics staff of this MSc programme are active in research. Teaching is therefore informed by research, giving you the opportunity to learn about the latest developments in structural engineering from leading experts in their chosen fields of specialisation.

Contact between students and academic staff is relatively high at around 20 hours per week initially to assist you in adjusting to university life. As the programme progresses the number of contact hours is steadily reduced as you undertake more project-based work. You will be taught by various approaches that complement each other in achieving the set learning outcomes.

How you will be taught

Lectures: These provide a broad overview of the main concepts and principles you need to understand, give you with a framework on which to build and expand your knowledge on through private studies.
Laboratories: Practical’s are generally two or three-hour sessions in which you can practice your observational and analytical skills, and develop a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts.

Design Studios: In a studio you will work on individual and group projects with guidance from members of staff. You may be required to produce a design or develop a solution to an engineering problem. These sessions allow you to develop your intellectual ability and practice your teamwork skills.

Computer Sessions: These allow for the opportunity to develop knowledge and experience of structural analysis and design software packages and apply them to structural engineering problems. Students have access to computers outside scheduled sessions to allow them to develop their transferable skills and learn at their own pace and time as well.

One-to-one Tutoring: On registration for the course you will be allocated a personal tutor who will be available to provide academic and pastoral support during your time at university. You will get one-to-one supervision on all project work.

Input from Guest Lecturers: Industry practitioners are invited to present lectures on the real structural engineering projects at regular seminars. The seminars are designed to facilitate informal interactions between students and guest lecturers, encouraging student active engagement in the discussions.

Site Visits: Learning from real-world examples is an important part of the course. You will visit sites featuring a range of structural engineering approaches. This exposure will provide you with invaluable experience including opportunities to debate on the real projects.

Assessment

Each of the taught modules is assessed either by formal examination, an assignment, or a balanced combination of two. Methods of assessing assignments include essay, individual/group report, oral presentation and class test.

Information on assignments in terms of the aims, learning outcomes, assessment criteria and submissions requirements are clearly specified at the beginning of the academic year. Detailed feedback on assignments is provided to students to assist them in achieving the required learning outcomes. The research project is assessed by dissertation and oral presentation.

Special Features

Emphasis on safety and sustainability: This MSc programme is distinctive because of its emphasis on building safety and sustainability and disaster mitigation of civil structures – with four taught modules totalling 60 credits. The dissertation projects will also be closely linked to ongoing research in these areas.

Industry support: Brunel has a very active Industrial Liaison Panel, which is immensely supportive of our programmes. The Panel and the companies have also shown keen interest in offering industrial support for the new programme through assistance such as support with project dissertations and site visits.

Guest speakers: Our strong contact with industry is also used to invite experienced industry practitioners to come and give talks on specialist topics at regularly organised seminars. The seminars also serve as a platform for student project presentations, which goes to build their confidence level because of the recognition and value their project gains through such dissemination.

Supporting professional development: Under a professional development module, you will be required to actively pursue your personal development planning through continuously recording and record keeping of progress being made throughout the course duration. Personal tutors will offer support to their tutees by regularly checking these records (i.e. a Personal Development Log (PDL) and discussing any relevant issues with the aim of supporting them to find solutions.

Accreditation

This new course has been designed in close consultation with industry and we are currently in the process of seeking accreditation for it from the major professional institutions (JBM). Related courses in the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences are already accredited.

To ensure the programme addresses current industry concerns, it was developed in compliance with international standards, using Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge as a guide. Format

The course offers both taught and research components including:

A project rotation in a laboratory of the student’s choice, among the projects offered by Cambridge Neuroscience Principal Investigators. The write up for the project will be formally assessed.

Supervisors will be drawn from Principal Investigators listed on the Cambridge Neuroscience web site: http://www.neuroscience.cam.ac.uk/directory/faculty.php. For projects in external organisations (industry-based), the student would have an additional academic University based supervisor in addition to the industry-based supervisor.

Students will be expected to choose from three out of 5-7 research training modules offered from modules and may be shared by other courses. These modules may vary from year to year.

In addition to the research project and research training modules, the students will receive a total of >20 hours of lectures, seminars and workshops on the five main themes of Cambridge Neuroscience.

Students taking this degree will be members of the University’s Graduate School of Life Sciences (GSLS) who offer a wide variety of Generic Skills Training.

This course is designed to prepare you for work in any archive or records management environment. It provides the professional training which is required for entry into these professional areas and is accredited at Diploma and Masters level by the Archives and Records Association.

Course structure and content

The course is divided into two parts: Part I (120 credits) is the taught course, successful completion of which reaches Diploma-level. Part II (60 credits) involves writing a dissertation, to be submitted for the Master’s-level qualification.

The course is available full-time or part-time (part-time students must be generally able to attend classes for half of each week in term time, over two years). Exit points exist at Diploma (9 months) and Master's level (12 months).

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars and practical workshops. Lectures and seminars are intended to provide a clear framework for further reading, questioning and thought. We aim to provide a supportive learning environment: help and guidance are always available.

The award will provide the knowledge of the latest cyber security principles, practices, tools and techniques, taught by a team of specialist staff in purpose-built cyber security laboratories. Graduates will be Cyber-operators, able to use ‘information’ as a defensive or offensive weapon.

Today, Cyber-Operators are required to have an ‘enriched’ background drawing elements of practical experience from fields as diverse as sociology, psychology, networks and network security, computer science and computer security, information management and information security, software engineering and reverse engineering, and of course, the law.

We have a diverse number of placements with companies from the security industry, high tech crime units and government organisations.

These Masters programmes provide a thorough education in the principles, theory and practice of records management and digital preservation. Overview

This full-time programme aims to educate students to the principles, attitudes and skills that underpin the professional management of historical archives. It is particularly geared to the ‘sole operator’ who is entrusted with the care and development of archives in voluntary societies, religious institutions, historic houses and other small-scale but important settings. The aim is to educate archivists who will be able to draw up and implement archive management solutions appropriate to such collections.

In addition, the programme aims to give students an understanding of the historical processes that have generated records, the key repositories in which they are held and how to utilise such records in their work as archivists.

The programme runs over two semesters and summer modules. The lecturing staff are drawn from the History Department, Library and An Foras Feasa. This includes the core course Sources and Research Design in Historical Research (1 unit), which is taught on a one-to-one basis by the dissertation supervisor, the compulsory course Research Methods in History with Special Reference to Asia and Africa (1 unit), a minor course or courses (to the value of 1 unit) from a list of approved options and/or a language course from the Faculty of Languages and Cultures, and a 10,000 word dissertation (1 unit).

In the intensive language pathways, students take 2 intensive language units and one history unit in their first year. The programme would suit students with a keen interest in learning about the historical conditions of the contemporary world, and in particular those who are prepared to look at the world from the perspective of other people and cultures. While the course is open to students from a broad range of backgrounds, the ideal applicant would have an UG degree in History (or a related discipline), some knowledge of foreign, including Asian or African languages, and preferably some relevant background in the region of specialism.

Graduates will find a wide range of career options open to them, in particular those involving inter-cultural or international contact, such as in international organizations, government institutions, non-profit organizations, and journalism, but also museums, educational institutions, or the publishing sector more generally. It would also be a suitable preparation for students considering embarking on a research degree focusing on one of the regional or topical areas of expertise represented in the department.

Accountancy at the master's level replaces the rudiments of financial management with real hands-on experience. The Master of Accountancy degree program provides students with a greater understanding of accounting and business than is possible in an undergraduate program.

Purpose

The program prepares students for careers as professional accountants in financial institutions, government, industry, nonprofit organizations and public practice.

Format

Graduates are prepared to research various databases related to troublesome accounting problems, and to exercise judgment in making accounting-related decisions by drawing on their integrated, comprehensive body of accounting knowledge and experience—what all masters have in common.

Students must take a minimum of 30 hours of graduate courses, including a minimum of 21 hours of accounting courses as listed below. The course is aimed at experienced pharmacy practitioners in primary, intermediate or secondary care.

You learn how to demonstrate the necessary skills and knowledge to prescribe safely and effectively in your area of practice. Throughout the course you gain skills and confidence. You improve your experience in the physical assessment of patients and the course allows you to demonstrate an effective use of diagnostic aids to support your diagnosis in your area of practice.
You demonstrate your knowledge of medical conditions that impact your prescribing practice area, including an understanding of the pathophysiology of disease and the ability to recognise signs and symptoms, as well as monitor response to treatment and review working diagnoses.

As an independent prescriber you gain a clear understanding of your roles and responsibilities on this course. You work in your own area of competence while building you understanding of onward referal pathways.

You learn how to demonstrate clinical skills including history taking, consultation and physical assessment and the course also places a lot of emphasis on the importance of clinical governance, good record keeping and audits.

You gain skills in communicating effectively with patients, carers and in your multi-disciplinary team.

As the course links you with other allied health professionals taking a non medical prescribing course you also benefit from interprofessional learning. There are opportunities to meet other students during your on campus learning or via online discussion forums provided by out virtual learning environment.

On completing the module you will have developed your skills as an individual by extending your scope practice to include effective prescribing.The programme will advance your clinical practice and enhance career opportunities.

Combines on campus and distance learning. Start date - September and February.
Block teaching - 8 days.
Distance learning - equivalent to 18 days.

Assessment: exam, reflective portfolio.

Other admission requirements

You will have identified a designated medical practitioner (DMP) who will have agreed to provided supervision, support and shadowing opportunities for you and be familiar with GPhC requirements of the programme and the learning objectives. You will demonstrate on application how you reflect on your personal performance and take responsibility for your CPD. This will be assessed by your employer (clinical manager and organisational non medical prescribing lead) as part of the application process. Your employer will ensure you have a current ( within the last 3 years) DBS check which is included as part of the application process.
As the module includes distance learning you will have IT ability and access to both computer and internet. The module is not available to pharmacists outside of the UK.
