We stand at the forefront of the academic study of musictechnology in general and record production in particular. This course investigates the theoretical and practical production of recorded popular music.

Investigating the production of popular recorded music from both a theoretical and practical standpoint, you will learn to combine a creative vision of the whole project with the practical management of the technical and artistic process.

Situated within one of the largest university music technology departments in the world, the course is led by a team of world-renowned record producers, composers, arrangers and engineers all involved in the recording industry.

Course detail

Designed to combine the technical skills of advanced recording techniques, digital signal processing and mixing with 'human skills' such as managing sessions, pre-production, developing your career, communication and performance in the studio.

Deconstruct and analyse the process of record production to develop the knowledge and skills necessary in understanding the contemporary, fast-changing music industry or as a springboard to further postgraduate study.

Format

Modules comprise a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials. There are also master classes from staff, visiting lecturers and practitioners.

Assessment

There are often at least two assignments for each module. We assess modules in a variety of ways. Written work is usually in the form of essays, critical self-reflections and learning journals. Practical assessment varies according to the nature of the practice – for example, CD recordings, although there will always be a substantial written component in the assessment.

Career and study progression

Graduates from this course work in a wide range of professional roles. For example, as sound engineers, post-production engineers, recording artists, studio managers, company directors, product developers, product demonstrators, producers, composers and re-mixers. Our students have gone on to work with many prominent artists, including Lady Gaga, Peter Gabriel, Bloc Party and Blondie, and organisations such as the BBC, Norsk Films, The London Synthesis Orchestra and Warner Brothers.

All masters students have access to our excellent laboratory facilities which include equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. There are three dedicated water laboratory staff available to help you use our equipment who are specialists in pollutant analysis, hydraulics and running continuous trials.

Practical training includes:

- Hand-pump maintenance using the largest single site collection of hand-pumps;

- latrine slab construction;

- flow measurements; and

- water quality sampling and analysis.

Field visits are made to relevant UK facilities.

WEDC has a unique sector Resource Centre with a dedicated and skilled information officer. Over 19,000 items can be searched on a customized database allowing ready access to this collection of books, series, country files, student projects, videos, journals, maps, and manufacturers' catalogues.

The Resource Centre also provides a dedicated quiet study space for WEDC students. Many items including all WEDC publications and over 2500 papers presented at 37 WEDC International Conferences are available in the open access sector knowledge base.

How you will learn

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules and optional modules which may be selected. A group case study module draws together material from across the programme and develops team working skills. The individual research project and dissertation (frequently linked to specific needs of an agency) of between 75 and 150 pages in length concludes the programme. To support your learning you will have access to our comprehensive facilities including laboratories, hand-pumps, and a dedicated Resource Centre.

Scholarships / Bursaries

Bursaries are available for self-funding international students.

The University also offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account. Facilities on campus include our laboratory which houses equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. Although Distance Learners will not normally have access to this equipment they can ask the advice of laboratory staff if they are carrying out fieldwork as part of their dissertation.

How you will learn

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities. They can also remotely access the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules, and optional modules which may be selected. The Case Study module draws together material from across the programme. A research dissertation between 75 and 150 pages long on a chosen topic relevant to interests or career development concludes the programme. Many of the Distance Learning modules have web-based discussion forums, where Distance Learners can choose to interact with each other and Module Tutors.

The method of delivery for the learning materials is mainly portable and paper-based, to suit students who are living or working in areas of the world with poor internet connectivity, or those who travel frequently. We also arrange some webinars which are recorded for students who are unable to participate.

During the programme students build up an excellent library of well-produced bound module notes, additional resources and relevant text books. In addition to the printed version we are developing and planning to provide e-reader versions of some module notes to enhance portability.

For most modules, students are assessed by two written assessments (three items for core modules). The Case Study module relates to a given scenario for which the student has to produce pre-feasibility and feasibility reports. The individual research dissertation module is assessed on the basis of a written dissertation and an oral when a student discusses their submitted dissertation with their supervisor and a second member of staff. For students who cannot visit the UK this oral takes place over Skype.

Facilities

All masters students have access to a wide range of building simulation codes which include commercial software, as well as bespoke codes developed in-house. Students can run these codes on their personal laptops or access any one of our computer laboratories, including access to our recently commissioned 2000-node high performance computer cluster.

One of our key strengths at Loughborough is our experimental facilities which enable us to validate computer models. Our masters students have access to a vast range of experimental facilities, some of which are used during the taught modules and all of which are available for use by students during their research dissertations.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling, field measurements and independent research. Students have access to a wide range of air flow and thermal modelling software as wells as extensive laboratory facilities. Following nine taught modules, students pursue a research dissertation of their choice which draws on the skills developed during the taught modules.

Students are assessed by a combination of traditional written exams, coursework and assignments. This split is typically 70/30 (exam/coursework) or 50/50, although some modules, such as research methods and concept design are assessed entirely based on coursework which comprises individual presentations and group work.

Scholarships

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

- ICT for Construction Projects
This module introduces managers to a wide range of tools and technologies appropriate for their role and projects. The module covers a range of topics including project information flows, e-business, database technologies, emerging technologies, building information modelling technologies, groupware and collaborative systems.

- Research and Communication
The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

- Principles of Project Management
Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. Specific areas covered include management responsibility for running construction projects; contemporary issues facing the construction industry; cultural complexity and the impact of behaviour and motivation on performance; and applying appropriate project management techniques for the different project phases.

- Design Management
This module introduces various Design Management techniques and approaches. These include process mapping techniques for design; ways to analyse and optimise the design process; and students will gain an understanding of the internal workings of a design office and their relationship with the construction team.

Students will gain an understanding of sustainability issues that relate to the built environment; ways in which these issues can be managed and effective communication of both strategic and technical information.

This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. - Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

This Distance Learning programme has been developed for graduates working or hoping to work in the emergency water and sanitation sector in low- and middle-income countries. It is designed to develop your understanding on the principles and practice of infrastructure provision in emergencies and during reconstruction. It will equip you with the key skills, expertise and knowledge for emergency work in low- and middle-income countries.

Modules are delivered by experts in a broad range of disciplines who have considerable experience of working in low- and middle- income countries. Participants have a mix of nationalities and past experiences, providing opportunities for learning from them and development of a valuable future network.

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities. They can also remotely access the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

Facilities on campus include our laboratory which houses equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. Although Distance Learners will not normally have access to this equipment they can ask the advice of laboratory staff if they are carrying out fieldwork as part of their dissertation.

How you will learn

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities and the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules, and optional modules which may be selected. The Case Study module draws together material from across the programme. A research dissertation between 75 and 150 pages long on a chosen topic relevant to interests or career development concludes the programme. Many of the Distance Learning modules have web-based discussion forums, where Distance Learners can choose to interact with each other and Module Tutors.

The method of delivery for the learning materials is mainly portable and paper-based, to suit students who are living or working in areas of the world with poor internet connectivity, or those who travel frequently. We also arrange some webinars which are recorded for students who are unable to participate.

- Assessment

For most modules, students are assessed by two written assessments (three items for core modules). The individual research dissertation module is assessed on the basis of a written dissertation and an oral when a student discusses their submitted dissertation with their supervisor and a second member of staff. For students who cannot visit the UK this oral takes place over Skype.

The PGCert in Education will enable you to become a teacher of Nursing and/or Midwifery in Higher Education and clinical practice. The course explores how people learn and equips you to be an effective educator to facilitate learning in the classroom and at the bedside. This course will equip you with a range of skills that are applicable to practice in a variety of contexts and will enable you to teach students from undergraduate novices to postgraduate/post registration experts.

This course represents great value for money and not only will provide you with a postgraduate certificate from Ulster University but will also allow you to record your qualification as a teacher with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, (NMC). On top of this, you will be able to be recognised as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Attendance

Attendance usually consists of one face to face session per week in the University. This is supported by an online presence and as such this is a blended learning course. In addition to attendance in class students are expected to accumulate teaching experience in higher education and in clinical practice. This is set by the NMC at 360 hours across the calendar year. This means that you will need to be released from your workplace for more than one day per week.

Teaching Practice Experience

The practice learning experience in all nursing programmes forms an integral part of the curriculum delivered that has several key functions for students. All theoretical instruction needs to be grounded in the context of its professional practice and this module provides that context in both the clinical and higher education environment.

Principles of Learning, Teaching and Assessment in Nursing & Midwifery

The purpose of this module is to enable you to become a lecturer/practice educator and record your award with the NMC. The module will provide you with a sound knowledge of the fundamental principles of learning, teaching and assessing in higher education so that you can apply this to professional education and practice. The module is provided as part fulfilment of the requirements for Lecturer/Practice Educator described by stage 4 of the Nursing & Midwifery Council Standards for Supporting Learning and Assessment in Practice (2008). The module also reflects the principles outlined at descriptor 2 of the UKPSF. This is a national framework that benchmarks education practice in higher education.

Consolidating Learning, Teaching and Assessing Practice in Nursing & Midwifery

The purpose of this module is to build upon the ideas and concepts introduced in NUR776 to provide students with a complete view of the elements that combine to make learning, teaching and assessment effective in higher education and clinical practice. This module will also enable students to complete the requirements specified by the NMC and thus record a qualification as a Lecturer/Practice Educator. The module will also enable students to meet the requirements of D2 described by the United Kingdom Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF).

Work placement / study abroad

Whilst there is no placement as such it is recognised that a vital component of nurse education takes place in the clinical area. Therefore you will be expected to accumulate a specified number of teaching hours in the workplace.

Oxford University's Master of Studies in Creative Writing is a two-year, part-time master's degree course offering a unique combination of high contact hours, genre specialization, and critical and creative breadth.

The emphasis of this postgraduate creative writing course is cross-cultural and cross-genre, pointing up the needs and challenges of the contemporary writer who produces his or her creative work in the context of a global writerly and critical community. The master's degree in creative writing offers a clustered learning format of five Residences, two Guided Retreats and one Placement over two years. The research Placement, a distinguishing feature of the course, offers between one and two weeks' hands-on experience of writing in the real world. Students may undertake their placement in a literary agency, a publishing house, the offices of a literary periodical, a theatre company, a screen production company, or other relevant organization. Placement organisations have included Macmillan, Initialise Films, Random House, the BBC, the Literary Review, AM Heath, Pegasus Theatre, the Poetry Society, and Carcanet.

These successes include winning the Gregory O’Donoghue Prize, the Writers’ Village International Short Fiction Award 2014, the Parallel Universe Poetry Competition, the Martin Starkie Prize, the International Jane Martin Poetry Prize, the Heritage Arts Radio play competition, the Cascade Pictures Writer’s Couch pitching competition, first prize in the Poetry Book Society Student Poetry Competition, the Miracle Poetry Competition, Best Photography Book Award from POYi (Pictures of the Year international), and the Yeovil Literary Prize for Poetry. Two alumni have won the Oxford University’s DL Chapman Memorial Prize, another was a finalist in the 2013 Writers at Work Fellowship Competition, and another won the London Fringe Festival’s Short Fiction Award. Alumni have been awarded a Toshiba Studentship, a Hawthornden Fellowship, and funded residencies at the Banff Centre, Canada, and at the Expansionists Project, Whitstable.

Students and alumni have had their work shortlisted across the genres for, among others, the Asham Award, the Bridport Prize, the Bridport Prize for Flash Fiction, the Fish Flash Fiction prize, the Yeoville Literary Prize, the Oxonian poetry prize, the Fish Short Story Prize 2013, the Big Issue in the North’s New Writing Award, the Oxonian review, and the Aesthetica Creative Writing Competition. A 2010 graduate was short-listed for the Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger award 2011. Two alumni were longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize, and one was shortlisted. An alumnus’ debut novel also made the longlist for the Not the Booker Prize.

Many of our graduate students have signed with agents, and each year a number go on to undertake doctoral study in creative writing or English Literature. Our graduates have obtained positions in publishing, media and the creative arts industries, as well as teaching positions in tertiary education.

The MSt has enjoyed a very strong application field since its inception, attracting record interest in recent years from a global constituency of writers. The course`s emphasis on critical analysis as well as on writerly and creative excellence attracts students of commensurately strong academic potential as well as of significant creative promise. This combination of academic rigour and creativity is a central distinctive feature of the course. Who should apply?

We are looking for writers with a proven record of commitment to their craft. You should be a keen reader, and bring an open-minded, questioning approach to both reading and writing. You will not necessarily have yet achieved publication, but you will have written regularly and read widely over a sustained period. You will be keen to dedicate time and energy and staying-power to harnessing your talent, enlarging your skills, and aiming your writerly production at consistently professional standards. It is likely you will have a first degree, or equivalent, although in some cases other evidence of suitability may be acceptable.

For applicants with a degree from the USA, the minimum GPA we normally seek is 3.6 out of 4.0. We do not seek a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or GMAT score. Although a GRE or GMAT score is not a formal requirement, if one is available it should be supplied.

The high number of contact hours are concentrated into Residences and Retreats. Students should be at a stage in their writing where, with appropriate guidance, they can undertake agreed assignments, projects and essays between meetings. There is a dedicated Course Website for provision of up-to-date information; contact and exchange between students; and contact between students and tutors. The course, however, is not a ‘distance-learning’ course, and tutors, while being happy to help with questions or problems, do not offer regular weekly ‘office hours’.

The M.St is unlikely to be suitable for those who are just starting out on their writerly and critical development.

What does the course cover?

The first year concentrates equally on prose (fiction and narrative non-fiction), poetry and drama. There is a significant critical reading and analysis component, which is linked to the writerly considerations explored in each of the three genres. Students are expected to engage fully with all three genres, in a spirit of exploration and with the aim of discovering what impact and relevance unaccustomed genres have for the development of their individual writerly voice. This necessarily involves undertaking assignments and exercises in areas that are new to students, and do not relate directly to any work they may have in progress. Students may be able to continue with their own longer term pieces-in-progress but the concentration of year 1 teaching is on producing new work, and the exercises and assignments, which should take priority, reflect this emphasis.

The second year offers specialisation in a single genre, again accompanied by a significant critical element focused around issues of interest to the individual student and related to the genre of choice.

The programme will enable you to pass on to your students the values required in modern healthcare, and within the NHS Constitution, including: compassion, kindness, empathy, advocacy, good communication and teamwork skills, and respect for patients’ privacy, dignity and individuality.

Programme structure

All students are initially registered for five years. The programme is part-time. On successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate Education for Professional Practice programme NMC registered practitioners may apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Council for recognition of their Qualified Teacher Status and be recorded on their Registration record.

The programme is in line with the NMC Standards for Learning and Teaching in Practice (2008).

Example module listing

This pathway is open to individuals from health care environments who wish to extend their knowledge, skills and develop their understanding through critical thinking and analysis.

For nurses and midwives, this forms part of the NMC standards for Supporting Learning and Assessing in Practice (Stage 4 - Teacher).

On completion of the three core modules, plus the requisite 360 teaching hours, the nurse or midwife can record this study as meeting the standards for the qualified teacher and therefore register the qualification with the NMC.

Learning and teaching module selection

The ethos of the programme is based on an individual’s developmental learning journey and, as such, commences at the initial applicant enquiry.

It is at this stage that an informal discussion will take place possibly with the administrator, module leader and/or the Director of Studies (DOS) to offer information regarding the modules/programmes whether it is Mentorship, Practice Teacher or Qualified Teacher.

Through this enquiry, a general discussion takes place that will assist the individual to make an informed decision as to the right journey of learning based on their learning needs, taking into account previous study and the requirements for their professional role in learning and teaching.

A nurse or midwife could apply for AP(E)L for up to 100 per cent against the Mentorship programme and the Practice Teacher qualification if appropriate study has been successfully completed.

This process takes place rarely but the mechanism is still in place. Each application for AP(E)L is considered on an individual basis by the AP(E)L committee using the University’s standard AP(E)L procedures.

Mentorship module

The Mentorship module can be accessed by a variety of health care professionals who have a responsibility to support learning in practice and forms part of the NMC standards for Supporting Learning and Assessment in Practice (Mentor).

A nurse or midwife wishing to undertake this module will be required to have one year’s post-qualification experience prior to attending. In preparation for this module, you would be encouraged to engage in the Associate Mentor preparation provision, which will be offered within NHS Trusts, led by Trust personnel with educational responsibilities.

The Mentorship module is a generic module (offered at FHEQ Level 6 and FHEQ Level 7) and forms part of the NMC standards to support learning and assessment in practice (stage 2 – Mentor).

It assists participants to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills through exploration, enquiry and reflexivity, aiming to develop and enhance effective assessment and facilitation skills.

Students will have an opportunity to explore learning and teaching strategies relevant to practice; assessment and evaluation in the context of giving feedback, measuring achievements, competence and quality.

The exciting challenge is to contextualise these areas for each student to ensure that the learning experience is meaningful.

Those who show an aptitude for learning, teaching and supporting learners or a keen interest in this area will be actively encouraged to progress on to further study.

Practice Teacher qualification

The Practice Teacher NMC qualification can be accessed by individuals on the NMC register. This pathway includes Supporting Education in Practice, and the Practice Module for the Practice Teacher.

Both modules are offered at FHEQ level 7. Pre-requisite study for this qualification is Mentorship FHEQ Level 6 or FHEQ Level 7.

This qualification forms part of the NMC standards for Supporting Learning and Assessment in Practice (Stage 3 – Practice Teacher), which offers preparation for Primary Care nurses who are supporting learners undertaking Specialist Community Public Health nursing qualifications and Specialist Practice qualifications.

Throughout the Practice Teacher programme, Practice Teacher students are supported by a qualified Practice Teacher to assist in developing skills associated with supporting specialist practice students.

Undertaking the Supporting Education in Practice module gives the opportunity for the student Practice Teachers to consider and critically evaluate links between theory and practice, and to explore strategies relevant for the facilitation and support of learning within the workplace.

The Practice Module for the Practice Teacher is an effective strategy to test and extend your skills in supporting specialist practice students throughout their specialist practice programme.

Opportunities are given to actively be involved in formative and summative assessments whilst being supported by a qualified Practice Teacher.

On successful completion of the Supporting Education in Practice module and the Practice Module for the Practice Teacher, the nurse can record this study as meeting the NMC standards for the Practice Teacher Qualification and be annotated on the local register of Practice Teachers which is held and maintained within their Trust.

Education Leads within the Trusts are sent information as to who has been successful in achieving this qualification.

Once the Practice Teacher qualification has been completed individuals are actively encouraged to continue with their postgraduate studies by undertaking the remaining modules associated with the Postgraduate Certificate.
