Who is it for?

A Cass Masters degree is your gateway to a real estate career.

Four key features make us market leaders in Real Estate Masters programmes:

  • Track record: Established 20 years ago, and accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), our degrees are widely recognised and highly valued by major employers; you will find Cass Real Estate graduates at all levels in leading real estate firms around the world.
  • Capability: you will be taught by highly qualified real estate staff, all with at least 10 years’ experience in teaching in senior roles in the industry – a lot of them with both. And we draw on London’s unmatched pool of industry professionals to act as visiting lecturers and guest speakers.
  • Focus: Cass only offers Real Estate courses on a postgraduate level – so you have the exclusive attention of our staff - and has specialised in courses which blend the professional, financial and practical skills in high demand across the real estate industry.
  • Location: we are the only Business School to offer real estate programmes in London, with the opportunity to network in a global real estate hub, neighbouring both the City’s financial core and the new tech belt centred on Silicon Roundabout.

Cass Real Estate courses:

  • Equip you with the core skills required by the industry embracing valuation, financial modelling, development appraisal, market analysis and cash flow modelling.
  • Are set in a framework of robust quantitative methods, financial and economic theory.
  • Have an emphasis on up to date industry techniques and practical tools taught hands-on in computer labs.

Structure

Overall the MSc Real Estate Investment could be labelled as a degree in finance which is focussed on real estate. Since the topics and methods you study are of interest to all real estate businesses, including the mainstream employers like chartered surveyors, the MSc Real Estate Investment may give you a wider choice of the role you play but it does not pre-determine what sort of firm you work for.

Term 1 gives you a grounding in the core skills of the real estate professional. You cover basic appraisal methods applied to valuation, development and financing of investments, plus a quantitative methods module incorporates econometric modelling. Those techniques are put in a wider context through a module on real estate economics and an investment markets module which ranges across all asset classes and financial instruments

Term 2 is more about applications of those core skills and principles. In Capital Markets you cover the different forms of indirect real estate – REITS, core and opportunistic funds, and derivatives. In Debt Markets you take in mortgage lending, mezzanine finance, mortgage-backed securities.  In Term 2 you also look in more detail at the financial instruments based on real estate – REITs, Mortgage Backed Securities, derivatives. Portfolio risk management deals with the role of real estate in investment portfolios and the mix of assets within real estate portfolios.

Assessment methods

All core modules in Term 1 and Term 2 are assessed by sight-unseen examinations (in January and April) plus courseworks set and delivered in Term time. Elective modules are assessed by coursework only.

Your courseworks will take a range of forms - essays, modelling projects, presentations, class tests. Some are done individually, others in self-selected or allocated groups of up to four coursework. The mix of assignments is designed to develop the general and soft skills employers expect – time management, team working, report production and presentations.

Overall your final Masters mark will be assessed on 50% exams and 50% coursework.

Career pathways

Graduates from the MSc Real Estate Investment go into a wide spread of firms and roles – some into the graduate entry schemes of the chartered surveyors in the UK or abroad. Most are best suited to analyst, strategy or research positions major fund management houses and investment banks, or smaller private-equity type real estate funds, rating agencies and specialist research firms. Many will go on to professional qualifications outside real estate, such as Chartered Financial Analyst Institute.

Connecting with employers

  • From week one, we host recruitment visits from all the largest real estate employers – like CBRE, JLL, Cushman Wakefield, Savills – plus other firms in real estate fund management, development, finance.
  • Our real estate specialists in the Cass Careers Service hold contacts with businesses across the industry, and will notify you of job opportunities as they come in through the year.
  • You will have un-matched opportunities to network with professionals and employers across London’s vibrant real estate industry at seminars and an annual conference run by our students’ Real Estate Club, and through our mentoring scheme which matches you up with a Cass graduate, and through industry events outside Cass,

The MSc Real Estate is a conversion programme for graduates from other academic disciplines and is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). It is one degree programme with three distinct pathways: Commercial Real Estate; Residential Real Estate and International Real Estate. All three pathways are viewed as a single cohort.

The programme will provide you with all the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the real estate profession and will prepare you for the challenge of completing the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) to become a chartered surveyor.

The MSc Real Estate is available for full-time study only. Given the intensity of the programme, you are advised to live in or near Oxford. Please note this course has a September start only.

Accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)

See the website http://www.brookes.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/real-estate-international-commercial-or-residential/

Why choose this course?

- The majority of the teaching staff are professionally qualified as chartered surveyors, planners, lawyers or accountants, each of them is dedicated to providing excellent teaching.

- Learning is enhanced by external speakers, field trips and management support from the industry, provided by seven of the major international real estate consultancies who sponsor the programmes: CBRE, Cluttons, DTZ, GVA, Jones Lang LaSalle, Knight Frank and Savills.

- The programme has always enjoyed a very successful level of graduate employment. Our students find employment in both the major international real estate consultancies and local firms.

- The programme is well respected in all areas of the industry and we also have alumni in real estate management companies, banks, financial institutions, government bodies and corporates.

- The small cohort (about 40 students each year) means more individual attention, excellent group dynamics in lectures/discussions, good opportunities for socialising, sharing experiences, supporting each other and creating lasting friendships.

Teaching and learning

The philosophy of the MSc programme is to provide you with a theoretical framework in the early modules and to build on this in the latter stages with practical, real life examples and case studies.

Learning methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, project work and independent study. Teaching is organised around the component modules, involving a total of around 20 hours of teaching time per week over each 12-week teaching semester.

The semester system requires examinations to be taken at the end of each teaching period. It is a very intensive course and you undertake a substantial amount of private study and project work.

The Integrative Professional Practice module draws together the different subjects taught on the course and enables you to develop strong interpersonal communication via a series of face-to-face role-plays.

In addition to the taught modules (see below), there is also an umbrella module, Real Estate Markets, which incorporates a number of field trips in the UK and Europe.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, through coursework such as submission of reports and presentations, and/or formal written examination.

Specialist facilities

Students taking the MSc Real Estate benefit from the allocation of a dedicated base-room in the newly redeveloped Abercrombie Building. The majority of teaching takes place in the base-room which also houses a suite of PCs.

Field trips

One of the most important elements of the MSc Real Estate programme is the field trip schedule, which helps you to build on your learning by giving you the opportunity to see how things are done in practice. These start in the induction week with trips around Oxford and London.

In the autumn, there are further day trips to London and a three-day residential field trip to another major city in the UK. In the spring we have further day trips, and in the summer we have a five-day residential trip to a major European city.

In each case, the intent of the field trips is to 'add flesh to the bones'. In the classroom, we can talk about how things should be done. It is only when on these trips that a student can appreciate how things are done in practice.

The cost of field trips is included in the programme fees.

How this course helps you develop

The MSc Real Estate, although grounded in academic excellence, is a practice-based programme for students wishing to become chartered surveyors. It has established itself as a premier postgraduate programme for students wishing to enter the property profession and it meets the strong demand from the real estate profession for high-calibre postgraduate students both in the UK and overseas.

As a student on the MSc Real Estate, you will benefit from the many contacts that the Department of Real Estate and Construction has established within the property industry and from the networking/career events organised during the year specifically for our students.

The Department also has an active alumni group on LinkedIn for students/graduates in Real Estate and students are encouraged to join when they start the MSc.

Careers

The MSc Real Estate programme at Brookes is highly respected in the profession.

In the case of UK students, it is normal for our students to secure employment before the programme ends. Most students work for the big international real estate companies in London, but our students have also been successful in securing employment in smaller niche practices in London or in other areas of the country.

Free language courses for students - the Open Module

Free language courses are available to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students on many of our courses, and can be taken as a credit on some courses.

Please note that the free language courses are not available if you are:
- studying at a Brookes partner college
- studying on any of our teacher education courses or postgraduate education courses.

Research highlights

David Shiers, co-author of The Green Guide to Specification, is based in the department.

Research areas and clusters

The Real Estate and Land Policy Group examines the impact of land and housing markets/policy on broader development processes - particularly for enhancing urban sustainability. We also address broader market-based fundamentals such as valuation, and emerging areas of research include behavioural finance.

Who is it for?

A Cass master's degree is your gateway to a real estate career. You may be a recent graduate with any previous degree, have a job in finance or real estate but wish to upgrade your skills and/or knowledge of real estate, or are intending a career switch from another industry.

Structure

The programme starts with two induction weeks, focused on:

  • An introduction to the real estate industry and the careers it offers, including a dedicated real estate careers day with briefings form the RICS and a range of employers and a Careers Fair with over 20 leading firms.
  • Foundation courses in the principles of finance, financial mathematics and quantitative methods to introduce the key concepts and methods you will use through the year.

In our first term, you get the portfolio of core real estate professional skills – taking in quantitative methods, valuation and investment appraisal methods, asset management and understanding real estate markets.

In the second term, module choices provide two learning “pathways”.

If you aim to join the graduate entry programme of the major UK real estate employers and take the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence you can pick modules that tilt toward UK-specific topics in law, tax and applied valuation. If you aim to work in fund management, finance or outside the UK, you can tilt toward advance financial modelling and international markets. Either way, your choice will not pre-determine the jobs available to you.

Assessment methods

All core modules in Term 1 and Term 2 are assessed by sight-unseen examinations (in January and April) plus coursework set and delivered in Term time. Elective modules are assessed by coursework only.

Your coursework will take a range of forms - essays, modelling projects, presentations, class tests. Some are done individually, others in self-selected or allocated groups of up to four. The mix of assignments is designed to develop the general and soft skills employers expect – time management, team working, report production and presentations.

Overall your final masters mark will be assessed on 50% exams and 50% coursework.

Career pathways

The largest proportion of our students go on to the graduate entry schemes of major firms of chartered surveyors in the UK, going through the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence to become qualified professionals.

The others go into a very wide range of employers and roles – with smaller niche agencies, fund managers, developers, investment banks, lending banks, public agencies, rating agencies, research companies, not to mention setting up their own businesses. Many will go on to professional qualifications outside real estate, such as Chartered Financial Analyst Institute.

Around half our students come from outside the UK, many of them take up jobs in other countries with the boost that a degree from Cass, accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, is a widely recognised and highly valued qualification world-wide. And they will generally find Cass real estate alumni already there to form the base of their professional network.

The real estate markets have become global. That urges for real estate professionals who are trained in integrating financial and economic-geographic skills with knowledge of local institutions.

The real estate markets have become global, making the real estate profession an international enterprise. At the same time global, commercial brokers report huge differences among local real estate markets. That urges for real estate professionals who are trained in integrating financial and economic-geographic skills with knowledge of local institutions.

The Department of Economic Geography at the University of Groningen is one of the leading centres in Continental Europe in real estate. It offers a Master of Real Estate Studies that integrates financial engineering, location theory and planning.

Why in Groningen?

The master in Real Estate Studies is based on economic geography and planning, rather than financial or business studies and technical sciences. This gives the course in Groningen a unique profile compared to other master programs in real estate. The program has a multidisciplinary character.

Job perspectives

Many graduates find jobs as market researchers or real estate consultants in a company, consultancy or government agency, or become a concept or property developer at a real estate investor. Graduate students find work as a research manager or portfolio manager at a real estate investor. Several people opt for an academic career at the university. In practice, graduates mostly do policy work, both in the private sector as well as at the local, regional and national government.

Research

The program of the master in Real Estate Studies is related to the major research sub-disciplines in spatial sciences. Interim results of the research projects are integrated in to the course.

Research in geography & planning focuses on the interrelationship between property and spatial environment. Geographical and planning literature provides insight into how location decisions are made and the role of institutions. These aspects are reflected in courses like 'property and land markets' or 'real estate development'. The research in economic geography focuses on a deeper understanding of choice of locations. This choice is based on economic and financial motives. In the research in real estate development, the interests of various economic actors are important; the landowner, the developer, the builder, the investor and owner / user. The spatial economic and financial-economic research provides insight into the considerations. The business and management-oriented studies contribute to understanding the value chain and processes in real estate development. These aspects are reflected in subjects like 'finance', 'property investment' and 'property development'.

MSc Real Estate Distance Learning is an intensive fast-track conversion course that fulfils the professional entry requirements of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Read more

MSc Real Estate Distance Learning is an intensive fast-track conversion course that fulfils the professional entry requirements of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The course combines academic excellence with the explicit development of transferable skills that are essential for a career in real estate, whether in the private or public sector, or in the UK or internationally. It builds on the established strengths of the School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED), and has a particular focus on the social and environmental aspects of property, alongside the economic factors.

You'll therefore develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of real estate in society, business and, particularly, to the end-user. Underpinning our course is the belief that a long-term perspective is essential to the successful development and management of real estate assets.

Commercial awareness is also at the heart of the course: recent research has highlighted the need for surveyors to provide leadership in solving business problems rather than simply providing traditional technical skills, and we take a problem-based learning approach to embed commercial awareness throughout.

The impact of globalisation and sustainability on real estate practice is also reflected throughout the course, with opportunities to examine legal and regulatory frameworks and property markets on an international basis.

Real estate practice is complex and this course reflects the need to effectively utilise a broad base of knowledge and skills. It will actively encourages you to develop connections between the knowledge and understanding garnered in one unit with that in another through careful design of learning materials and assignments.

Aims

The aims of the programme are:

  • to provide students with a framework of knowledge, understanding and skills to enable graduates to take a leading role in addressing the challenges facing the real estate industry.
  • to develop students' capacity for critical thinking and ability to present sound, well-justified arguments and solutions to complex problems, recognising the interconnected nature of real estate practice
  • to draw on the world-class research and practical experience of the School of Environment, Education and Development, together with our excellent links with business and the public sector, to enable students to explore new insights into the areas of sustainable development and strategic management of the built environment
  • to facilitate student learning by providing an intellectually challenging and stimulating learning environment, involving both independent and collaborative project work
  • to be highly relevant to future employment in the real estate industry, with a strong focus on developing commercial awareness and to produce graduates who have a wider understanding of their responsibilities as global citizens.
  • as an RICS accredited degree, to enable graduates to embark on the Assessment of Professional Competence which leads, after successful completion of a two year period of practical experience, to membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

Special features

  • The virtual learning environment offers you the flexibility to fit your studies around your other commitments.
  • You have the option of at least two days of face-to-face engagement with the tutors during each 6-month block of study.
  • Flexible entry means that you can join the programme in either July or January each year.

Teaching and learning

The online learning packages are at the heart of teaching and learning on this programme. Short video introductions to each topic are supported by a range of online material including webinars, podcasts, tutor-developed interactive written material, case studies and directed reading. You can test and reinforce your knowledge and understanding with end of topic self-test questions which will provide feedback on your answers and direct you to further reading. You will be encouraged to reflect on your studies by using Blackboard to facilitate both peer-to-peer and tutor-led discussions via discussion boards, wikis and blogs. The material is designed to be dynamic and cater to a range of students with different levels of prior knowledge and experience. If a topic is new to you then we recommend that you work through the material in a sequential manner. However, you may consider that you already have a good knowledge of some of the topics. The end of topic self-test questions can be used as a way of testing your knowledge and understanding and of identifying particular areas to focus on.

Guest contributors and lecturers with current industry experience will ensure that a strong connection is made between theory and practice.

Many course units employ an interactive learning approach where simulated real world problems are posed and students, working in groups or individually, seek to identify the issues and how these may be resolved within the context of professional practice. Case study material such as plans, video walk-throughs and photos will be used to enrich these real world scenarios.

A key part of a Manchester Education is to allow students, where consistent with professional body requirements, the opportunity to personalise their learning and, in several course units, such as Land and Development, Real Estate Modelling and the Dissertation , you will have the ability to select and design your own assignment around your own particular interests.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of this course are assessed by a variety of methods, including essays, report-writing, project portfolios and presentations. The majority of assessment is based on individual work with an element of collaborative project work. After successful completion of the taught-element of the course, you will undertake a 15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice, overseen by an appropriate supervisor.

Surveying Project:

Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. We create these situations by inviting guest speaks in to give up-to-date lectures, having great industry links and taking our students into situations where they would like to work. Most of our surveying and construction courses give our students the opportunity to carry out a construction project. Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

Market report and case study analysis:

Students on our MSc Surveying courses can choose to study International Real Estate & Construction as an optional. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations.

Accreditation

The MSc International Real Estate is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is the world's leading professional body for setting standards in the surveying industry.
