◾If you want to establish a career as a chartered town planner and/or chartered surveyor, this programme is designed for you.
◾The programme is professionally accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
◾There is significant input from industry to our teaching programme, including teaching on some courses, guest lectures and seminars. Programme structure

You will take a series of core courses and undertake a dissertation or a major project in planning and real estate development.

Core courses provide you with a grounding in core knowledge and skills required of planners and surveyors working within the planning and development field. Accreditations

Professional accreditation is important because it means that graduates need complete only the Assessment of Professional Competence for the relevant profession in order to obtain chartered status as MRICS and/or MRTPI.

Population growth and economic growth lead to expansion, while processes of obsolescence and decline lead to a demand for urban transformation projects. These processes usually require investments in land and property (re)development, while planning interventions provide guidelines to investors, sometimes as opportunities, but also as barriers to what an investor might see as a profitable investment.

The Master's specialisation in Planning, Land and Real Estate Development provides a land and real estate development perspective on urban development.

An intersecting perspective

The interaction between planning interventions on the one hand and land and real estate investments on the other hand is the central theme of this Master's specialisation.

Starting from the interaction between planning and real estate, you will develop your perspective on:

  • different planning instruments and their impact on land and real estate markets,
  • the dynamics of land and real estate markets, investment behaviour by private and public developers,
  • public private partnerships, land management strategies and value capturing mechanisms and
  • smart land and real estate investment strategies.

Develop your potential

Our Spatial Planning graduates are greatly valued by their employers for their analytical skills, critical perspective and sound academic understanding of the relationship between human activities, their spatial environment, and relevant spatial interventions enhancing their living environment.

Upon completion students will have knowledge of:

  • Interfaces between different planning concepts, sectors and interests
  • Synergies that are found and trade-offs that are made along these interfaces

Spatial planners from Nijmegen work as policy maker, consultant or project manager for government, consulting firms, project developers, housing corporations or research institutes. Also, more and more of our alumni are working in international projects.

This programme of study reflects the exciting changes in academic teaching and in the built environment profession that have occurred in recent years. The philosophy of this programme is based on a flexible approach to problem solving and the development of analytical faculties, while the structure offers flexibility and a range of optional subjects. The programme brings together professionals of various disciplines in the learning process to encourage interaction and integrative study.

Outcomes

The aims of the programme are to:

  • Examine real estate development and investment projects in wider global, economic and financial contexts
  • Develop skills for effective decision making in investment and development projects
  • Broaden the abilities of graduates through understanding and analysis of some of the key areas in real estate.

Facilities

The university has invested £76 million in a new building to house the campus library, TV studios and academic facilities for disciplines including architecture, design and construction. Stockwell Street, where the programme will be delivered, is a short walk from the university's buildings on the Old Royal College site.

This fast-track conversion course combines academic excellence with the explicit development of the transferable skills essential for a career in real estate whether in the private or public sectors, in the UK or internationally.

There are a number of course units common to the MSc Real Estate Asset Management and MSc Real Estate Development that provide a sound grounding in real estate from the perspectives of investor, developer, occupier and the broader society. You then follow specific course units, depending on the specialist route chosen, with the ability to choose further optional units to reflect your own particular interests.

A residential fieldtrip to London is an integral part of the programme and there is an optional fieldtrip to another major European city.

It is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors under its Valuation, Commercial Property, Residential and Planning & Development pathways.

Special features

One of the special features of our Masters programmes is the opportunity to work on a live consultancy project. Working with industry partners, students will complete a piece of work within a real-world professional environment. 

A comprehensive range of site visits, guest lectures and presentations from business and public organisations are an integral part of the course and networking opportunities are strongly promoted. 

An overseas field visit is an optional part of the programme if students choose to undertake the relevant optional course unit: International Planning (Field Visit). The cost of the visit is partly covered by the course fee but there is a student contribution towards the cost of the trip, depending on the venue. Recent fieldtrip locations have included Barcelona, Amsterdam, Belfast, Dublin and Toronto. Countries to be visited may change their immigration and visa regulations at short notice. The School of Environment, Education and Development cannot guarantee that where visas are required for the field course, they will be granted but will ensure that, in the unlikely event that a visa is refused, affected students are not academically disadvantaged.

Teaching and learning

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months.  There are no evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of this course are assessed by a variety of methods, including essays, report-writing, project portfolios and presentations. The majority of assessment is based on individual work with an element of collaborative project work. After the taught-element of the course, over the summer, you will undertake a 15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice, overseen by an appropriate supervisor.

The MSc Real Estate is a conversion programme for graduates from other academic disciplines and is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). It is one degree programme with three distinct pathways:
-Commercial/Residential Real Estate
-International Real Estate
-Hotel and Hospitality

All three pathways are viewed as a single cohort. The programme will provide you with all the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the real estate profession and will prepare you for the challenge of completing the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) to become a Chartered Surveyor.

The MSc Real Estate is available for full-time study only. Given the intensity of the programme, you are advised to live in or near Oxford. Please note this course has a September start only.

This course in detail

The MSc Real Estate comprises 11 or 12 compulsory taught modules (depending on your chosen pathway) and a structured Applied Real Estate Project. It provides you with a thorough grounding in the skills and expertise necessary for a career in real estate.

Each module, except one, is 10 credits and the MSc qualification is 180 credits.

Teaching and learning

The philosophy of the MSc programme is to provide you with a theoretical framework in the early modules and to build on this in the latter stages with practical, real life examples and case studies.

Learning methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, project work and independent study. Teaching is organised around the component modules, involving a total of around 20 hours of teaching time per week over each 12-week teaching semester.

The semester system requires examinations to be taken at the end of each teaching period. It is a very intensive course and you undertake a substantial amount of private study and project work. The Real Estate Markets module draws together the different subjects taught on the programme and incorporates a number of field trips in the UK and Europe.

Careers and professional development

The MSc Real Estate programme at Brookes is highly respected in the profession.

In the case of UK students, it is normal for our students to secure employment before the programme ends. Most students work for the big international real estate companies in London, but our students have also been successful in securing employment in smaller niche practices in London or in other areas of the country.

Structure

Overall the MSc Real Estate Investment could be labelled as a degree in finance which is focussed on real estate. Since the topics and methods you study are of interest to all real estate businesses, including the mainstream employers like chartered surveyors, the MSc Real Estate Investment may give you a wider choice of the role you play but it does not pre-determine what sort of firm you work for.

Term 1 gives you a grounding in the core skills of the real estate professional. You cover basic appraisal methods applied to valuation, development and financing of investments, plus a quantitative methods module incorporates econometric modelling. Those techniques are put in a wider context through a module on real estate economics and an investment markets module which ranges across all asset classes and financial instruments

Term 2 is more about applications of those core skills and principles. In Capital Markets you cover the different forms of indirect real estate – REITS, core and opportunistic funds, and derivatives. In Debt Markets you take in mortgage lending, mezzanine finance, mortgage-backed securities.  In Term 2 you also look in more detail at the financial instruments based on real estate – REITs, Mortgage Backed Securities, derivatives. Portfolio risk management deals with the role of real estate in investment portfolios and the mix of assets within real estate portfolios.

Assessment methods

All core modules in Term 1 and Term 2 are assessed by sight-unseen examinations (in January and April) plus courseworks set and delivered in Term time. Elective modules are assessed by coursework only.

Your courseworks will take a range of forms - essays, modelling projects, presentations, class tests. Some are done individually, others in self-selected or allocated groups of up to four coursework. The mix of assignments is designed to develop the general and soft skills employers expect – time management, team working, report production and presentations.

Overall your final Masters mark will be assessed on 50% exams and 50% coursework.

Career pathways

Graduates from the MSc Real Estate Investment go into a wide spread of firms and roles – some into the graduate entry schemes of the chartered surveyors in the UK or abroad. Most are best suited to analyst, strategy or research positions major fund management houses and investment banks, or smaller private-equity type real estate funds, rating agencies and specialist research firms. Many will go on to professional qualifications outside real estate, such as Chartered Financial Analyst Institute.

Intensive mode delivery

The Master of Valuation and Property Development is professionally recognised by some of Australia’s leading professional bodies. This allows graduates to differentiate themselves within the industry.

Further, the program is also delivered in intensive mode. Intensive Mode Delivery is a compact and time efficient way to complete a postgraduate qualification with minimal impact on professional and personal lifestyles. Subjects are generally delivered over two weekends during the semester with two sets of three-day sessions per subject, usually scheduled as Thursday to Saturday (approximately six to eight contact hours per day) with a break of four or five weeks between session one and session two of each subject.

Participants will receive 40 hours of combined lectures, discussion groups, case studies and workshops during contact hours. International students are required to be on campus every week.

Professional recognition

Valuation and Property Development graduates are recognised by the Australian Property Institute (API). The API accreditation allows Valuation and Property Development students to apply for registration as Certified Practising Valuers with New South Wales Fair Trading and the Valuers Registration Board Queensland upon graduation (conditional on meeting professional practise requirements). Non property valuation graduates are endorsed for API Associate Membership and Certified Property Practitioner (CPP) certification.
