The PG Diploma in Railways Studies is designed to give students an alternative perspective on railway history, and the course will provide a better understanding of how academics have investigated the social, cultural, political, business, economic, and technological aspects of British railway history between 1825 and 2002. Those successfully completing the diploma are expected to come away from it thinking about railway history differently from when they started the course, and the programme overall will act as a bridge from an ‘amateur’ interest in railways to becoming part of the ongoing academic discourse.

The programme starts in late September/early October each academic year – places are limited to ensure a constructive atmosphere for discussions.

This is a part-time, postgraduate-level programme delivered wholly online in a fully-supported learning environment. Students can exit with a Postgraduate Certificate after successful completion of the first year if their circumstances change.

Overview

-To provide students with knowledge of the academic debates regarding different aspects of British railway history between 1825 and 1920s
-To give students knowledge of how the building and development of Britain’s railways in the Victorian period changed the nation socially, economically and politically
-To provide the students with an understanding of how and when railways’ operational and managerial systems were developed, refined and advanced before 1914
-To provide students with knowledge of how labour relations changed within the British railway industry before 1926, and how the railway unions developed
-To provide students with an understanding of the potential causes of the declining profitability of British railway industry after 1870
-To demonstrate the complexity and diversity of events in the past, and the range of problems involved in the interpretation of complex, ambiguous, conflicting and often incomplete material • To equip students with the analytical tools to effectively interrogate the worth of primary and secondary source material pertaining to the history of the British railway industry
-To encourage students to develop their own views on different historical debates in the academic literature and to think creatively about the topics they are studying

This part-time two-year programme will comprise six 20-credit modules:
Year One
-The Coming of the Railways to Britain, 1825-1900
-The Declining Profitability of the Railway Industry, 1870-1914
-British Railway Workers, 1825-1926

Year Two
-The Role of the Railways: Railways and Government,1888-1939
-The Railways and Society: The Railways After the Second World War, 1945-1968
-Privatising British Rail, 1987-2002

Students will be required to complete all these modules in the first instance, though additional modules may be added in the future to accommodate future programme growth and offer a broader learning experience.

Assessments will comprise a balance of short and long critical essays, book reviews, short research projects and other similar tasks.

Transportation Studies (20 Credits)
This module considers the analysis, design and maintenance of highways - you will study areas such as route location, geometrics, junction and pavement design, and management. You will also examine the design and operation of airports and railways.

Civil Engineering Management (20 Credits)
We will cover all the management and procedural considerations that go into the development and delivery of a civil engineering project. You'll develop an understanding of the legal and commercial frameworks that projects work with and build your confidence in making decisions based on qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Civil Engineering Professional Context (20 Credits)
This module examines the role of the civil engineer in society - such as responsibilities to society, the environment and economy - and the professional conduct expected of the role. The module will cover the requirements and processes for making a professional membership application.

Structural Analysis & Design (20 Credits)
You will gain a greater understanding of the engineering principles applied to the analysis and design of structures, giving you the skills and confidence to apply these techniques.

Fluid Mechanics & Water Engineering (20 Credits)
In this module you will focus on the properties of fluids and the principles of fluid mechanics, hydraulic modelling and fluid systems analysis. You will develop an understanding of the issues, problems and solutions within the water infrastructure sector of civil engineering.

Geotechnical Analysis & Design (20 Credits)
You will learn to produce complex engineering solutions to a professional standard. We will provide you with an in-depth understanding of engineering principles in relation to geotechnical analysis and design, looking at how to solve geotechnical engineering problems and produce innovative designs.

Materials Technology (20 Credits)
We will increase your understanding of the uncertainties and consequences of material behaviour during design, manufacture and in service. You'll study the environmental and safety implications of the materials used for nuclear power production.

Railway risk and safety management, are both vitally important worldwide, for not only the ongoing operation of existing railways but also for the design and the development of new systems. Much work is being done by companies involved in both mainline and urban transportation systems to improve safety, for the public, their passengers and their workforce. In the last two years alone there have been around 60 railway crashes and incidents reported worldwide. The prevention of the associated loss of life and livelihood are high priorities for all organisations involved.

This programme in Railway Risk and Safety Management (RRSM) is the first of its kind in the UK and is jointly delivered by the Universities of Birmingham and York. You will benefit from the expertise of two leading UK universities and spend around half of your time with the Birmingham Centre for Rail Research and Education (BCRRE) and half at the High Integrity Systems Engineering Group (HISE) in York.

The programme will give you a deep and robust understanding of the approaches to managing safety and risk in transport systems and related projects. The York modules are highly structured around the general topics of risk and safety management, while the Birmingham portion of the programme focuses on railway systems and the application of risk management principles in this sector. The taught postgraduate programme in Railway Systems Engineering and Integration has a strong focus on developing postgraduates’ railway engineering knowledge and know-how, their systems integration skills and their understanding of the complex interactions between subsystems. It develops participants’ ability to work in multi-disciplinary project teams and is strongly supported by railway practitioners.

Graduates of the programme design, build, operate and manage successfully the sophisticated subsystems and complex interfaces characterising existing and new railways. The full-time programme comprises 8 classroom taught modules and 2 research-oriented modules, scheduled over a period of 8 months. The Master of Research (MRes) programme in Railway Systems Integration prepares postgraduates for careers in research and development (R&D) in railway businesses and companies supplying railways with advanced technical and operational systems. The programme can also serve as a stepping stone to doctoral studies by developing candidates’ analytical skills and research know-how.

The MRes offers a unique opportunity for students to undertake a research-based Masters degree together with technical study in a relevant railway systems or engineering subject. Students benefit from participating in both the fundamental and applied research carried out within the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education, and from the world-leading educational programmes offered by the Centre. The programme comprises 3 classroom taught technology oriented modules and a research skills module that consists of three main elements, namely, reviewing literature, analysing data and modelling the behaviour of technical systems. Journeys may be made by foot, bicycle, private motorised transport and public transport. The varied means of transport available require infrastructure comprising either of public rights of way or dedicated systems such as railways, which need to be sized, designed, built and maintained.

Taken together, transport and its infrastructure has significant impacts on society and the environment and these impacts need to be estimated.

The MSc Transport Engineering and Planning provides systematic knowledge and skills in the analysis and design of transport systems which are grounded in advanced engineering science, statistical modelling and planning theory and practice.

Accreditation

This degree is accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Civil Engineers deal with structures (e.g. buildings, bridges, tunnels, dams) and infrastructures (such as roads, railways, airports, water supply systems, etc.). The two-year Master of Science in Civil Engineering provides students with a sound preparation on these topics, allowing them to choose a curriculum (or ‘track’) among the five available: General, Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Transport Infrastructures and Structures. The ‘General’ curriculum aims at training civil engineers with a broader range of expertise in the design, implementation and management of civil works of various kinds. ‘Geothecnics’ is devoted to the study of engineering problems involving geomaterials (i.e., soil and rock) and their interaction with civil structures (foundations, tunnels, retaining walls).

The MSc / Postgraduate Diploma in Civil Engineering and Construction Management provides students with a combination of courses designed to improve their knowledge and understanding of advanced civil engineering and modern construction management theory and practice. This programme uses experience from an internally recognised postgraduate qualification, (MSc Construction Management from Heriot-Watt University) and combines it with the high profile Heriot-Watt University Civil Engineering Postgraduate Programme to provide an internationally acclaimed Masters programme.

If English is not the applicant’s first language a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required with all elements passed at 6.0 or above.

Learning and teaching

The Euromasters programme is a truly international experience with regard to teaching, learning and living.

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed on a semester basis. As you progress through each semester and successfully pass the units, you will receive credit providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

Industrial placement

A wide range of companies, such as AECOM, ATKINS, CAPITA, CH2M HILL and ClimateXChange (Scotland’s Centre of Expertise on Climate Change), are offering placements exclusively for this MSc. A full list of companies can be provided upon request. The 8 to 12 weeks industrial placement will take place in the period from June to September.

You’ll study

You'll take the compulsory module Civil Engineering Design Projects. This module gives you the opportunity to work on real projects. You can choose between a renewable energy project or an industrial project. You’ll develop comprehensive and innovative designs that involve structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and water engineering, management, environmental and financial planning.

In additional to the industrial placement you'll also take the compulsory module Research Protocols for Science & Engineering which supports the dissertation project. You also have a wide choice of optional modules.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation. If you’re on one of the specialist streams you’ll undertake a research project on a topic related to that stream. The dissertation can be linked to the industrial placement and worked on together with the industrial partner.

Working across the disciplines of architecture, art and cultural geography, our Architectural and Urban Design MA combines critical debate and creative practice to help you develop as a designer who will plan the urban environments of the future.

You will benefit from a supportive studio environment, two field trips and a variety of workshops and seminars, taught by active practitioners in architecture and urban design. You will engage with research on the analysis of cities and lead your own projects, speculating as to how cities will evolve and be used in the future.

The course is highly experimental and aims to stretch your imagination and critical ability. You will produce innovative portfolios and learn about the issues of global urban environments, expanding your knowledge beyond the usual subject boundaries.

Academic context

Urbanism and urban design are ambiguous terms that surround and reflect both the physical and mental attributes applied to the built environment.

The material of roads, pavements, buildings, railways, bridges and so on represents the physical. The mental is represented by narratives, histories, personal perceptions and anticipations.

The two sensibilities combine to form a layered knowledge of the city, which could be compared to a mature palimpsest or to semi-obscured archaeology. In this context, we study the city with emphasis on the space of the private realm and its seamless engagement with the public domain.

Design 1: Urban Strategies
This module introduces you to design strategies, methods and issues pertinent to your design studio, helping you to explore the potential of different approaches to design. There is a strong emphasis on the development of conceptual ideas and their correlation with the development of design strategy, helping you to articulate your individual position as a design practitioner.

Design 2
Design 2 aims to consolidate and extend the priorities, ideas and strategies established in Design 1. You will explore architectural and urban ideas in more depth and complexity. The emphasis here is on curiosity and speculation, supporting the development of methods to help with enquiry, reflection and debate.

Independent Project
The independent project runs concurrently and is concerned with your identification of places of ‘conflict’ and negotiations of space. The module encourages experimentation in a specific field of study. Students have developed projects in fields of architectural and artistic practice, creative design, techniques of communication or new technologies.

Critical Readings
The Critical Readings module will develop your skills in critical practice through an analysis of cultural, historical, theoretical and practical issues in architecture. It provides the opportunity to carry out initial investigations into the ideas that will drive your Masterwork project.

Research Skills and Training
Research Skills and Training introduces you to the challenges involved in designing, implementing and disseminating a research project. You will develop a written proposal that can inform the development of your Masterwork project, encouraging you to consider how your investigations contribute to the academic knowledge in your field.

Masterwork
The Masterwork is the final stage of study, requiring you to perform as a self-reflective critical researcher and lay down the foundations for innovation in your future practice. You will develop your project from an agreed research proposal, which may be either a text-based dissertation or a design-led research project with critical reflection. You will be asked to focus the areas of interest that have developed in your previous practice and studies, identify research questions and develop research methods, bringing critical investigation and creative responses together.
