Public awareness of hazards and risks has enhanced the importance of safety assessment and management in today’s increasingly litigious society. Worldwide the burden of responsibility for health and safety is shifting towards those who own, manage and work in industrial and commercial organisations. Legal reform is tending to replace detailed industry specific legislation with a modern approach in which, where possible, goals and general principles are set and the onus is on organisations to show how they manage to achieve these goals.

The management of safety and risk needs to be integrated into the overall management of the organisation. It should be appropriate and cost-effective without dampening the innovative entrepreneurial spirit of employees with inflexible bureaucratic rules and procedures. An organisation’s exposure to potential hazards needs to be managed so as to reduce the chance of loss and mitigate any effects. Risk and safety issues need to be evaluated in a structured and calculated manner but in the light of an overall organisational strategy.

The MSc/PG Diploma programme in Safety and Risk Management aims to provide students with advanced knowledge of risk assessment techniques, the public and individual perception of risk, and how decisions are made in competitive business markets. The focus is on practical applications of safety methodologies, ergonomics and human factors, and safety and risk management techniques.

All of these skills will be drawn together to undertake complex qualitative and quantitative risk assessments. This courses aims to give students an appreciation of risk from individual and societal perspectives as well as understanding the basic principles of risk assessment and modelling and how safety management works in practice.

• Human Factors Methods
This course will equip students from academic and/or industrial backgrounds with knowledge on, and the means to deploy, a wide range of specialist human factors techniques. The emphasis is on method selection, application, combination and integration within existing business practices. Students will develop a critical awareness of what methods exist, how to apply them in practice and their principle benefits and limitations.

• Human Factors in the Design and Evaluation of Control Rooms
The course will equip students from academic and/or industrial backgrounds with in-depth knowledge on, insights into, and the means to deploy a wide range of specialist techniques relevant to the ergonomic design and evaluation of control rooms. The emphasis is on key areas of control room operations and on actionable ways to deploy theory on human capabilities and limitations in order to improve performance, safety, efficiency and overall operator well being.

• Fire Safety, Explosions and Process Safety
Introduces students to the basic principles of fire safety science and engineering, and develops skills in associated modelling leading to an understanding of principal fire/explosion related issues in process safety.

• Environmental Impact Assessment
Provides the candidate with the knowledge and understanding of the principles and processes of the Environmental Impact Assessment. By the end of the course, the student should be familiar with the European EIA legislation and its translation into the Scottish planning system, and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the EIA process, the tools and the agents involved in an EIA and the possible problems with using EIA as a decision making tool. . It is also intended that the student will be able to appreciate the purpose of the EIA process from a number of perspectives; that of a developer, an EIA practitioner and a policy maker.

• Project Management Theory and Practice
Provides students with an understanding of the concepts and practices of construction project management used to provide value added services to clients within the constraints of time, cost, quality sustainability and health and safety management.

• Learning from Disasters

There are two Induction Weeks The Quantitative Finance course starts with two compulsory induction weeks, focused on:

• an introduction to careers in finance and the opportunity to speak to representatives from over 75 companies during a number of different industry specific fairs.

• a reminder course of advanced financial mathematics, statistics and basic computing which forms a prerequisite of the core modules in term 1.

Format

To satisfy the requirements of the degree programme students must complete:

• eight core courses (15 credits each)
and
• two additional core modules plus three electives (10 credits each)
or
• three electives (10 credits each) and an Applied Research Project (20 credits)
or
• one elective (10 credits) and a Business Research Project (40 credits)

Assessment

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Quantitative Finance, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination. Coursework may consist of standard essays, individual and group presentations, group reports, classwork, unseen tests and problem sets. Please note that any group work may include an element of peer assessment.

Risk has become a key concept in modern society. Growing concern about the environment and a number of disasters have served to focus attention on the hazards and risks involved in a wide range of activities from offshore oil production to rail and air transport; from the design of football stadia to the operation of chemical plants and environmental protection. Today there is a wide range of techniques available to assess risk and reliability, both in relation to safety and in the wider sense. These techniques now underpin new legislation on safety and have relevance over a broad spectrum of activities, including environmental and other systems, where risk and reliability are key concerns.

The MSc/PG Diploma programme in Safety, Risk and Reliability Engineering is designed to give a thorough understanding of these techniques and experience of their application to a variety of real-world problems. Teaching and learning

The modules are taught by academics at the Centre for Software Reliability, within the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering, and also by visiting lecturers from industry. We also have invited speakers from academia and industry in most modules. Teaching takes place via seminars, lectures, group work and tutorials. The assessment is through coursework only – this consists of written work (individual and group), presentations and peer review.

The modules will be delivered in block mode, with students taking two modules per term. Each module consists of two blocks as follows:
-Thursday evening: 5pm - 9pm
-Friday: 9am-5pm
-Saturday: 9am-5pm

In summary, assuming attendance at the Thursday evening sessions can be done without having to take any time off from work, the students are expected to take eight Fridays off from work in a calendar year (though some employers may allow their employees to take these times off as study leave), and they will need to also attend classes for a further eight Saturdays (i.e. two Fridays and two Saturdays per module). MSc Project Management, Finance and Risk gives you a foundation in quantitative risk assessment and decision-making under uncertain conditions, coupled with classical engineering economics and financial engineering.

As well as lectures, you learn through tutorial support, guided private study, coordinating group activities, and coursework. Not every module has an exam and in some cases you will be assessed through a module project.

Full-time students complete the programme in one year and we expect you to devote a significant part of the non-taught hours to project work, group activities, as well as your own independent study. The duration of a part-time programme is two years (this may be extended to three years in individual cases).

Modules

There are four core modules and two electives. Out of the two electives you can choose from four or five topics including games theory, perspectives on management and leadership and entrepreneurship, innovations and enterprise.

You can also take part in a rolling programme of one-day events to build your communication and team-building skills while you study. These sessions cover topics including conducting research, improving your presentation skills and dealing with people.

The course is modular and each module lasts four days. The structure has been designed in this way so that both full and part-time students can follow the programme. In addition, the course offers practical skills in management, leadership, entrepreneurship, software and communications tools.

A Prince 2 Project Management Practitioner’s Course will be offered to students in the summer term. This five-day course, paid for by the institution, is presented by an outside training agency. By successfully completing the course you will be awarded a coveted practitioner’s certificate.

This course focuses on the physical processes that generate natural hazards through an advanced understanding of geological and environmental processes, field recognition and mapping of hazards, GIS and remote sensing techniques for mapping and modelling of hazards, risk assessment techniques as well as the social and cultural dimension of those hazards. Links with industry and practitioners in the emergency and disaster management field, including, community resilience officers, Local Authority Emergency Planning Departments, NGOs (e.g. Red Cross) and major disability and older persons charities will allow graduates to develop a range of skills and real-world expertise in preparedness and planning.

Funded places

Due to an initiative from the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) designed to support key sectors in the Scottish economy, there are 10 fully-funded places available to eligible students starting this course in 2013/14. This covers all tuition fees associated with the MSc programme and can be held by students classified as Scottish or EU for fee purposes only. Whilst there are many Masters degrees involving banking offered in the UK, the vast majority provide descriptive material about what banks actually do. The Edinburgh Masters differs from the majority in that it has a major emphasis on what decisions Managers in banks should make and how to make them. On this course you will undertake four 30 credit units and one 60 credit project unit.

This Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

• Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.

• The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.

• The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Accredited internship

All students on our full-time business Masters courses can apply to undertake the PG/MBA Internship Programme Reflective Practitioner Module. This is an 8 week unpaid accredited internship, which can be taken in addition to option modules and will help students to gain invaluable work experience. The internships, which are with London-based organisations, take place during the summer period. To apply, students must submit a completed application form and a copy of their updated CV to the Business Experience Team; the team then shortlist from the applications and conduct group meetings with the applicants.

The MSc in Quantitative Finance – an innovative cross-faculty alliance between the Strathclyde Business School and the Faculty of Science – has been developed to address this need. The course has been designed so that students who have a strong aptitude for mathematics, statistics and computing but who have not studied these topics in detail in their first degree can learn the necessary skills to move into the financial industry.

What you’ll study

The curriculum provides a balance between finance and mathematical theory, computer implementations of this theory, and practical skills and knowledge.

Core classes are undertaken in the first semester, and address themes such as principles of finance and quantitative methods for finance, as well as foundation classes in mathematics, statistics and computing science.

Work placement

You may be able to undertake an industrial based MSc project. This takes place in the third semester of the course between June and September. The placement can be based in the UK or in another country and are typically paid internships. In 2014 we had students placed in banks in France and Malta.

Facilities

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics has teaching rooms which provide you with access to modern teaching equipment and access to University computing laboratories with all necessary software available.
