Developed to meet the increasing demand for specialists in finance and economics, you will receive rigorous training in financial economics and mathematics. It combines solid education in economic theory with exposure to the field of finance through several specialised options. As a result, this MSc will help you prepare for a range of exciting career possibilities, in roles such as financial economist or quantitative analyst.

You have the option of studying full-time over the course of one year or part-time over the course of two.


The Financial Economics MSc aims to help you:

Teaching and learning

The Financial Economics MSc course is delivered through a flexible combination of lectures, seminars and computer lab sessions. Lectures introduce you to the key theories, concepts and economic models. In seminars, you have the opportunity to solve applied problems, analyse case studies and make presentations of research published in leading academic journals.

The computer labs provide you with practical experience of using computer software to perform calculations and conduct realistic simulations. In addition, econometric methods are taught in lab sessions, so you have the opportunity to apply econometric software to empirical research and financial market estimations.

When appropriate, practitioner slots – such as research seminars conducted by external financial experts or presentations by invited academics – will be incorporated into module delivery.

We also offer pre-sessional induction courses on economic analysis for students who need to build up their background in the fundamental aspects of financial economics.

Teaching takes place over two terms, from September to June. Full-time students who pass all the taught modules during the main exam sessions finish the programme at the end of September when they submit their dissertation or literature review.

Full-time students who successfully complete the taught modules in the August resit exam session submit their dissertation or literature review in December.

Part-time students complete their modules over the course of four terms from September to June before undertaking their dissertation or literature review.


Pre-sessional activities covering Micro-and Macroeconomics, Stata, Excel, Probability and Mathematics run in September before the start of term. These are available for all students who secure a place on the MSc Financial Economics course. Pre-sessionals are included in your degree fee and are designed to prepare you for the course. We therefore strongly encourage you to make every effort to attend.

You are not required to register for the above pre-sessionals, you just need to turn up on the day. Further information, such as the exact times and locations will be provided in your induction schedule.


Assessments are a combination of unseen written examinations (70% for each module) and coursework (30% for each module).


You will take 180 credits – two 30-credit taught modules, four 15-credit taught modules and  60 extra credits through one of the following routes:

  • Dissertation: you will take a dissertation worth 60 credits (Economics Research Project).
  • Literature survey: you will take two extra elective taught modules of 15 credits each and a literature survey (Economics Literature Survey) worth 30 credits.

For each route, there are two core modules:

  • Dissertation route: you will take three core modules – Financial Markets Econometrics and Asset Pricing. You will also select three electives -  one module from group one, two module from group two.
  • Literature Survey route: you will take three core modules – Financial Markets, Quantitative Methods and Asset Pricing. You will also take five electives – one module from group one, two modules from group two, and two further electives, including possibly one from each of groups one and two.

It is not possible to give exact hours per week because these can vary from one term to the other depending on which electives the students choose.

On completing the Masters in Economics you will have a wide range of career options. Graduates of this course enjoy numerous employment possibilities in both the public and private sectors, including consultancy and financial analysis.

On completing the Masters in Financial Economics course you will have a range of employment possibilities to explore. To some extent, your career options will be determined by the electives you choose.

The curriculum offers an integration of finance, mathematics, and computing. The required mathematics courses have substantial financial content and the experiential computational finance course, which students take during the summer, makes use of skills learned in the mathematics, analytics, and finance courses taken up to that point. The program has a strong multidisciplinary nature and combines the expertise of four of RIT's colleges. The program is a full-time, 17-month curriculum beginning exclusively in the fall. The program ends with a required non-credit comprehensive exam based on the courses completed by the student.

The practical and quantitative skills that you will develop on the programme will equip you to meet this challenge.

Our compulsory modules provide a firm grounding in probability theory, stochastic calculus, derivatives pricing, quantitative and numerical methods, structuring products, volatility analysis, and the modelling of credit, equity, foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives. We also provide a thorough training in C++ and other programming tools.

Optional modules will allow you to focus on risk analysis, portfolio management, designing trading strategies or econometric analysis. Many of our financial engineering graduates are now working as Quants in large London banks and other financial institutions. Others have pursued PhDs and have successful academic careers. Financial instruments are becoming ever more sophisticated, so graduates that understand complex modelling techniques are always in great demand. The high quantitative content of this programme opens many doors to a wide range of careers. You could structure and develop new debt or equity solutions to meet clients funding and hedging needs, or you could become a proprietary trader in exotic derivatives, or a software specialist or a quantitative analyst supporting the traders.

There are excellent opportunities on the buy-side, with hedge funds and investment institutions, as well as in investment banking and in software analytics. Opportunities in quantitative research, or with a rating agency, are among the many other attractive alternatives. Outside of mainstream banking and investment, you might also consider firms involved in commodity and energy trading, or the treasury divisions of leading multinationals and management consultancies.

Delivery and assessment

Students experience lectures, small group seminars, problem-solving classes, drop-in sessions, computer labs and group working during their studies. Successful completion of the taught modules leads to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. The Master of Science in Investment Banking and Capital Markets is offered on a full time basis. The curriculum is developed around core courses and feature a series of electives within the field of banking and capital markets. It also includes French or other foreign language courses and a professional experience

The program is made up of two semesters studying subjects such as quantitative methods, banking, ethics and regulations, capital markets, and computer programming.

An internship rounds out the program where students can apply their knowledge in professional environments.

Internship -

Students acquire real-life experience through a 4 – 6 month internship in France, or anywhere in the world.

The objective is to provide an opportunity where students learn how to approach assignments and working relationships in a professional environment. They can apply their new found knowledge in real world situations while receiving guidance and feedback from managers and colleagues. New contacts made during their internships help create their professional networks.

French language classes -

French language lessons are mandatory for non-Francophone international students. Francophone students may choose German, Italian, Chinese, or Spanish.

Admission requirements -

The program is open to candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration or Economics from a recognized university with good academic performance and a good command of English.

Native English speakers or students who have had two years of courses taught in English are exempt. A GMAT score is optional, not mandatory.

The MSc in Investment Banking and Risk Management programme is designed for those interested in working inthe financial services sector and who have an academic background in Financial Mathematics/Applied Mathematics/ Engineering Sciences or Physics and have graduated with an International Bachelor’s degree in the fore-mentioned subjects or with a French Master’s degree (M1). Coursework and assessment

The course teaching is shared by Alliance Manchester Business School and the School of Mathematics, and delivered through lectures, case studies, seminars and group project-based work. Assessment varies depending on course units taken. It may include a combination of course work and examination. The dissertation normally ranges between 30 and 50 double spaced pages.

Course unit details

During the course you will be taking 180 credits in all. The eight taught modules during semester one and two total 120 credits and consists of both compulsory and optional taught units which can be viewed in the list below.  

Over the summer period, you will carry out your Research Dissertation, worth 60 credits. The dissertation gives you the opportunity to apply what you have learned in the taught part of the course. Our topics are aligned with the research interests of leading financial institutions from the City of London and internationally.

The course provides you with a strong mathematical background with the skills necessary to apply your expertise to the solution of real finance problems. You will develop skills so that you are able to formulate a well posed problem from a description in financial language, carry out relevant mathematical analysis, develop and implement an appropriate numerical scheme and present and interpret these results.

The course lays the foundation for further research in academia or for a career as a quantitative analyst in a financial or other institution.

You will take three introductory courses in the first week. The introductory courses cover partial differential equations, probability and statistics and MATLAB.

Globally, financial tools, products and software are becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated. There's a demand for market-aware graduates who can demonstrate an understanding of mathematical models used in these products.

The MSc in Quantitative Finance – an innovative cross-faculty alliance between the Strathclyde Business School and the Faculty of Science – has been developed to address this need. The course has been designed so that students who have a strong aptitude for mathematics, statistics and computing but who have not studied these topics in detail in their first degree can learn the necessary skills to move into the financial industry.

This masters course will prepare you for a career in financial engineering and risk management. Careers include roles as a hedge fund manager or financial analyst.

You’ll gain:

What you’ll study

Work placement

You may be able to undertake an industrial based MSc project. This takes place in the third semester of the course between June and September. The placement can be based in the UK or in another country and are typically paid internships.


The Department of Mathematics & Statistics has teaching rooms which provide you with access to modern teaching equipment and access to University computing laboratories with all necessary software available.

You'll also have access to a common room facility which gives you a modern and flexible area which can be used for individual and group study work and is also a relaxing social space.
