There are two Induction Weeks The Quantitative Finance course starts with two compulsory induction weeks, focused on:

• an introduction to careers in finance and the opportunity to speak to representatives from over 75 companies during a number of different industry specific fairs.

• a reminder course of advanced financial mathematics, statistics and basic computing which forms a prerequisite of the core modules in term 1.

Format

To satisfy the requirements of the degree programme students must complete:

• eight core courses (15 credits each)
and
• two additional core modules plus three electives (10 credits each)
or
• three electives (10 credits each) and an Applied Research Project (20 credits)
or
• one elective (10 credits) and a Business Research Project (40 credits)

Assessment

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Quantitative Finance, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination. Coursework may consist of standard essays, individual and group presentations, group reports, classwork, unseen tests and problem sets. Please note that any group work may include an element of peer assessment.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for anyone who wants to undertake rigorous training in financial economics and mathematics, either immediately after completion of an undergraduate degree or as a mid-career professional.

You have the option of studying full-time over the course of one year or part-time over the course of two.

Objectives

The aim of this course is to develop your critical and analytical abilities in mathematics and economics and to prepare you academically for a career as a financial economist or quantitative analyst.

The dissertation track also serves as a stepping stone to an Economics or Finance PhD.

Teaching and learning

The Financial Economics MSc course is delivered through a flexible combination of lectures, seminars and computer lab sessions. Lectures introduce you to the key theories, concepts and economic models. In seminars you have the opportunity to solve applied problems, analyse case studies and make presentations of research published in leading academic journals.

The computer labs provide you with practical experience of using computer software to perform calculations and conduct realistic simulations. In addition, econometric methods are taught in lab sessions, so you have the opportunity to apply econometric software to empirical research and financial market estimations.

When appropriate, "practitioner slots" - such as research seminars conducted by external financial experts, presentations by invited academics etc. - will be incorporated into module delivery.

We also offer pre-sessional induction courses on economic analysis for students who need to build up their background in the fundamental aspects of financial economics.

Teaching takes place over two terms, from September to June. Full-time students who pass all the taught modules during the main exam sessions finish the programme at the end of September when they submit their dissertation or literature review. Full-time students who successfully complete the taught modules in the August resit exam session submit their dissertation or literature review in December.

Part-time students complete there modules over the course of four terms from September to June before undertaking their dissertation or literature review.

Assessment

Assessments are a combination of unseen written examinations (70% for each module) and coursework (30% for each module).

You will take two 30 credit taught modules, four 15 credit taught modules and will accrue 60 extra credits through one of the following routes:
-Literature survey: two extra elective taught modules of 15 credits each and a literature survey (Economics Literature Survey) worth 30 credits
-Dissertation: a 60 credit dissertation (Economics Research Project).

Note: It is not possible to give exact hours per week because these can vary from one term to the other depending on which electives the students choose.

The curriculum offers an integration of finance, mathematics, and computing. The MSc in Quantitative Finance – an innovative cross-faculty alliance between the Strathclyde Business School and the Faculty of Science – has been developed to address this need. What you’ll study

The curriculum provides a balance between finance and mathematical theory, computer implementations of this theory, and practical skills and knowledge.

Core classes are undertaken in the first semester, and address themes such as principles of finance and quantitative methods for finance, as well as foundation classes in mathematics, statistics and computing science.

Work placement

You may be able to undertake an industrial based MSc project. This takes place in the third semester of the course between June and September. The placement can be based in the UK or in another country and are typically paid internships. In 2014 we had students placed in banks in France and Malta.

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics has teaching rooms which provide you with access to modern teaching equipment and access to University computing laboratories with all necessary software available.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an independent research project, which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 15,000-words and a project presentation.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through seminar-style lectures and problem and computer-based classes. Student performance is assessed through a combination of unseen examination and coursework. For the majority of courses, the examination makes up between 90–100% of the assessment. The project is assessed through the dissertation and an oral presentation.

In the engineering sector, recent graduates from the MSc include a mathematical modeller at Steet Davies Gleave, a leading Transportation Planning Consultancy; and a graduate trainee at WesternGreco, a business segment of Schlumberger that provides reservoir imaging, monitoring, and development services. Delivery and assessment

Students experience lectures, small group seminars, problem-solving classes, drop-in sessions, computer labs and group working during their studies. Successful completion of the taught modules leads to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. The Master’s degree is awarded on satisfactory completion of a dissertation, following the Diploma examinations. Dissertation topics range over all areas of relevance to investment analysis and allow completion of a case study or research topic dissertation.
The top student on the course receives the Walter Scott Global Investment Management Prize.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The ICMA Centre’s financial engineering degree is highly respected by quantitative analysts and their employers. The credit crunch and subsequent events have emphasised the need to develop better pricing and better hedging models for all complex products. The practical and quantitative skills that you will develop on the programme will equip you to meet this challenge.

Our compulsory modules provide a firm grounding in probability theory, stochastic calculus, derivatives pricing, quantitative and numerical methods, structuring products, volatility analysis, and the modelling of credit, equity, foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives. We also provide a thorough training in C++ and other programming tools.

Optional modules will allow you to focus on risk analysis, portfolio management, designing trading strategies or econometric analysis. This newly structured degree aims to further enhance the strong reputation of its precursor – the MSc in Financial Engineering and Quantitative Analysis, which was established back in 1999. A good background in mathematics is required for acceptance to this programme.

EMPLOYABILITY

Many of our financial engineering graduates are now working as Quants in large London banks and other financial institutions. Others have pursued PhDs and have successful academic careers. Financial instruments are becoming ever more sophisticated, so graduates that understand complex modelling techniques are always in great demand. The high quantitative content of this programme opens many doors to a wide range of careers. You could structure and develop new debt or equity solutions to meet clients funding and hedging needs, or you could become a proprietary trader in exotic derivatives, or a software specialist or a quantitative analyst supporting the traders.

There are excellent opportunities on the buy-side, with hedge funds and investment institutions, as well as in investment banking and in software analytics. Opportunities in quantitative research, or with a rating agency, are among the many other attractive alternatives. Program

The Master of Science in Investment Banking and Capital Markets is offered on a full time basis. The curriculum is developed around core courses and feature a series of electives within the field of banking and capital markets. It also includes French or other foreign language courses and a professional experience

The program is made up of two semesters studying subjects such as quantitative methods, banking, ethics and regulations, capital markets, and computer programming.

An internship rounds out the program where students can apply their knowledge in professional environments.

Internship -

Students acquire real-life experience through a 4 – 6 month internship in France, or anywhere in the world.

The objective is to provide an opportunity where students learn how to approach assignments and working relationships in a professional environment. They can apply their new found knowledge in real world situations while receiving guidance and feedback from managers and colleagues. New contacts made during their internships help create their professional networks.

French language classes -

French language lessons are mandatory for non-Francophone international students. Francophone students may choose German, Italian, Chinese, or Spanish.

The program is open to candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration or Economics from a recognized university with good academic performance and a good command of English.

Native English speakers or students who have had two years of courses taught in English are exempt. A GMAT score is optional, not mandatory.

We run a core module on Data Analytics which will introduce students to SAS Enterprise. A coursework prize for this project will be sponsored by SAS.

Recent highlights included a case study run by British Airways,a presentation from SAS on the Future of Analytics and ongoing dissertation projects with Unilever and LBM.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment varies depending on course units taken. It may include a combination of course work, group project assessment and presentations, report, assignments, in-class tests and examination. The dissertation normally ranges between 12,000 and 25,000 words.

There are many potential career roles for postgraduates with an understanding of analytical approaches in business and management - including job titles such as operational research analyst, systems analyst, risk analyst, financial analyst, performance analyst, business analyst, marketing analyst, business modeller, and operations, logistics, production, project, risk, quality, performance, or general manager.
