The Quality Diabetes Care programme will be of interest to health care professionals (e.g. doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, podiatrists) working in diabetes care settings. It will equip participants with skills for modern evidence based management of diabetes patients, and offer practical experience in organisational management, reflective practice and quality improvement.

Why study Quality Diabetes Care at Dundee?

Dundee has a particular international reputation for Diabetes research, education and informatics developments. With the growing prevalence of diabetes (currently around 5% in the UK with a doubling of rates predicted over the next 15 years), there is an increasing need for generalists to upskill in diabetes care.

This course will equip you with essential skills and modern evidence based practice for clinical management of diabetes patients. In addition, this programme offers knowledge and practical experience in organisational management, reflective practice and quality improvement.

Much of the work can be completed flexibly in your own free time, and has been designed around the needs of students who are also working full time.

Aims of the programme

The programme aims to:
- Provide a comprehensive programme to enable understanding of diabetes care (from patient to organisational management) for health care professionals
- Establish a stimulating environment for research, teaching and learning about diabetes
- Ensure a high quality evidence based approach in patient management, teaching, research and evaluation.
- Ensure a critical understanding of current issues in diabetes management.
- Enable students with theory and practical tools for healthcare quality improvement.
- Establish students with a basic grounding in educational/ behaviour change theory with application to patient and professional education
- Encourage students to apply critical analysis to complex problem solving.
- Allow development of generic attributes and skills including reflective practice, professionalism, literature appraisal and academic writing
- Encourage a culture of multidisciplinary working in the workplace.

Who should study this course?

This programme will be of interest to health care professionals (e.g. doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, podiatrists) working either as generalists or in specialist diabetes care settings.

How is this course taught?

The teaching approach is one of blended learning with fixed face to face teaching (lectures, group work, case discussions, workshops, simulation exercises, quizzes) blended with online activities, case based studies and workplace assessment. Much of the later work can be completed flexibly in the students own free time, and has been designed around the needs of students who are also working full time.

The face to face component requires attendance in Dundee, 3 times throughout the year (2 consecutive days teaching each time). The remainder of the course delivered is online.

Much of the private study will be self-directed and relate to various work place projects (see assessments). Students are expected to undertake approx. 8 - 12 hours of work per week, either as self directed study or undertaking specific activities associated with the course.

What will you study?

Year 1: PG Certificate
The proposed Year 1 PG certificate programme will be taught over a period of 12 months. It will be taught and assessed as 3 x 20 credit compulsory modules (SCQF level 11 credits), namely:

Diabetes Clinical Care (20 credits)
Diabetes Organisational Care (20 credits)
Enhanced Patient Care and Professional Development (20 credits)


Year 2: PG Diploma
Students who decide to progress to the diploma stage will have the option of doing a further two modules totalling 60 credits. These modules will develop further advanced skills in clinical care and organisation, healthcare quality improvement and research methodology to allow students to develop their own diabetes service more effectively and embed skills required for their 3rd year dissertation (thesis).

Two of the modules also run as part of the MSc in Quality Improvement:
Quality Improvement in Action (30 credits)
Developing Research and Evaluation Skills (compulsory for students continuing to Year 3) (30 credits)

The third optional module for year 2 is
Advanced Diabetes Clinical Practice (30 credits)

Year 3: MSc Dissertation
Year 3 will involve students undertaking a more substantial project in the field of either Diabetes Care with either a Clinical/ Quality Improvement or Educational theme. Students will be allocated an appropriate university supervisor. This work will be presented as a 10-15,000 word thesis.

How is this course assessed?

Each modules will be assessed individually. Assessments include completion of clinical case scenarios, work place projects, and associated reflective essays in an attempt to embed learning and reflection into real life clinical practice. Quality improvement modules will require additional topic specific written work and on-line activities.

Careers

We would envisage this course/ qualification being of interest to health care professionals (e.g. doctors, nurses, pharmacists) working either as generalists or in diabetes care settings. The qualification may be used by primary care doctors for personal development/ CPD accumulation, and to enable them to set up and enhance their own diabetes specialist services.

For the secondary care training doctors, or allied health professionals, the qualifications could be used to help general career progression or be used to aid a move into specialist diabetes care services either within primary or secondary care.

This qualification is NOT equivalent to accreditation onto the diabetes medical specialist register e.g. allowing the individual to operate as a diabetes consultant.

Course Aims

The programme will:
• explore clinical audit within wider health policy and regulatory contexts

Module One: Governance and Assurance in Healthcare
This module will enable participants to critically consider the governance requirements and regulatory frameworks which apply to healthcare organisations and within this the role and value of clinical audit as a source of assurance. The key focus will be on governance and healthcare in the NHS, although the module will draw on developments in other sectors and countries as these have influenced the requirements placed on healthcare organisations in the United Kingdom.

• What is Governance and Why Does It Matter?
• Governance, Risk, & Assurance within the NHS
• Assuring the Quality of Care: The Pivotal Role of Clinical Audit

Module Two: Clinical Audit:
This module considers what constitutes robust clinical audit (at both strategy, programme and project level) and explores the value of clinical audit at all levels of an organisation - locating this within the wider quality framework for an organisation or team. The module also provides an opportunity for students to critically review the key stages within the clinical audit cycle, develop their skills in planning and undertaking audits and identify the key challenges involved in managing clinical audit projects and programmes.

Module Three: Managing Change and Quality Improvement:
All healthcare organisations are dependent on their staff, so how do you get the best from them? This module explores the core concepts associated with change so as to enable students to effectively manage the behavioural and organisational issues associated with audit and quality improvement programmes. The aim is for students to (i) develop strategies and actions and (ii) be able to apply a range of different tools and techniques which together enable them to contribute to the successful delivery of sustainable change across professional, functional and hierarchical boundaries.

Module Four: Realising the Potential of Quality Audit:
This module requires students to bring together the knowledge and skills from earlier in their programme of study and to purposefully apply these in a well researched, extended project. Students will be required to critically examine a self-chosen empirical issue or, preferably, a specific work-related problem and develop a related action plan.

Teaching & Assessment

The Postgraduate Certificate is assessed through coursework. This will involve completion of individual and group exercises together with submission of a formal assignment at the end of each module. There will be a choice of assignment subjects for each module and assignment titles, submission deadlines and reading lists will be supplied at the start of the course.

Further Study:
The PG Certificate in Medical Science (Clinical Audit) provides a bespoke introduction to clinical audit at postgraduate level and is a qualification in its own right. However, should students wish to continue their studies, the course has been designed to act as a precursor to further academic study at Keele University and other institutions. Students who successfully complete the PGCertificate can, for example, progress onto the Diploma or Masters in Medical Science within the Faculty of Health at Keele.

This two-year MSc gives you the chance to analyse problems using both the social and life sciences. Course details

The programmes are flexible and modular, covering a range of subject matters relevant to anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain. Credits from the component modules can be combined to provide a postgraduate certificate, diploma or master’s-level qualification. You study the central aspects of evidence-based medicine and research, and how to apply these to your anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain practice to enhance the quality of your individual clinical practice and broader service delivery. You share a number of modules with other master’s-level programmes giving you many opportunities to mix with other students and share academic and professional experiences. The emphasis is on integrating theory and clinical practice in a multi-professional working and learning environment.

You develop an ability to understand how evidence is generated, retrieved, evaluated and importantly, employed in practice. The programmes enhance inter-professional learning and direct the focus of learning toward evidence based clinical decision making and quality improvement to enhance service delivery. This is in line with the Government’s policy visions to develop evidence based, quality improvement driven professional practice.The programmes offer a structured and logical progression to learning, with a firm link to your anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain practice. The learning and teaching strategy is as flexible as possible. You can choose to study by attending classes, by distance learning or flexible learning (a combination of attendance and distance learning). 

For attending students, learning and teaching methods include key lectures, seminars involving group discussions and structured learning activities, practical computer lab classes and tutorial support.

For distance learners our virtual learning environment provides you with interactive structured learning materials such as written learning materials, narrated PowerPoint presentations, and structured learning materials and activities. Alongside this you can access a range of forums – discussion boards, wikis and blogs to support your discussion with module tutors and other students. Tutorial support is provided by email, phone or Skype. 

If you are a flexible learner you can use these two approaches flexibly throughout each module depending on your personal needs and work commitments. Our learning and teaching strategy, and opportunities for feedback for flexible learners includes aspects of the attendance and distance learning strategies.

How you are assessed

We use a variety of assessment strategies. Formative assessment supports your learning in some modules. Each module is summatively assessed through a written report, seen exam, data analysis project, research proposal, quality improvement proposal, critical commentary and – for the MSc only – a dissertation.

Business Transformation through Quality Management introduces you to the fundamental concepts of Total Quality Management and Organisational Behaviour, focusing on the application of these concepts in the organisation. It includes driving a culture of continuous improvement and managing change.

Quantitative and Research Methods evaluates concepts of quantitative methods and the application of specialist statistics to aid decision-making within organisations. It also covers the theory and application of research methodologies to support organisational improvement activities. These skills are further developed in the dissertation.

Business Operations – the Quality Management Perspective will give you knowledge of business systems for quality planning, quality standards and the benefits accruing from integrated management systems and their application in the workplace to generate organisational efficiencies. It shows you how tools such as SERVQUAL, FMEA, QFD and Benchmarking can help evaluate how an organisation is performing against their strategic vision and goals.

Strategic Organisational Excellence looks at the links between concepts of excellence (as used by EFQM and other excellence models) and their use in the strategic management of an organisation. It explores issues raised by variations in culture and sector, both within the organisation and in its relationships with its stakeholders. It will also introduce you to Corporate Social Responsibility and Quality in the Supply Chain.

The Dissertation provides the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research and effectively communicate your findings in an individual research project. Your dissertation will focus on a specific quality management issue of your choice, which may relate to a work situation. You will receive one to one supervision during the dissertation.

Programme Assessment

The course uses a range of teaching methods including formal lectures, tutorials, in-class exercises and work based assignments. Classes are also interactive with the use of case studies and invited speakers. The University’s virtual learning environment (VLE) further supports student study by hosting a range of activities and resources online. You’ll explore a range of simulation-based learning methods that can improve patient safety and quality of care through enhanced learning. Advance your knowledge, understanding and skills in patient safety and the application of these to your own workplace. You’ll be introduced to the role of human factors and develop a critical understanding of the current state of patient safety within healthcare and examine strategies to improve it. You’ll be provided with the knowledge and skills associated with the project design, development and knowledge transfer process. You’ll also explore the physical and psychological links between organisations, employees and their work environment and how the concept of human factors influences the way we work. Delivered in collaboration with the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (http://www.nds.ox.ac.uk/) it is designed to prepare senior surgical trainees for life as independent specialists by providing key skills and knowledge essential for modern practice, which are not fully represented or are omitted from most postgraduate training curricula. The course is unique as its part-time nature is designed to allow students to fit their study around work.

The MSc in Surgical Science and Practice provides a foundation in some of the most important additional life long skills which the future leaders of the profession need to acquire. The MSc in Surgical Science and Practice is organised around six compulsory modules, plus a work-based research project and dissertation. The programme is normally completed in two to three years. Students are full members of the University of Oxford and are matriculated as members of an Oxford college.

The course features a significant component of online and distance learning, as well as one week of intensive teaching in Oxford per module.

The overarching aim of the MSc in Surgical Science and Practice is to provide the next generation of surgeons with the tools to build and lead successful surgical units delivering safe, high quality, high reliability care.

By the end of the course candidates will be able to understand the following important principles:

- How to evaluate clinical research evidence critically and understand how it should be interpreted and applied to one’s own context and practice;

- How to design, conduct and evaluate teaching and training for postgraduate clinicians, and how to assess curricula and teaching programmes;

- Financial and quality management ideas, and methods for analysing and restructuring the systems in which surgeons work;

- A theoretical understanding of the use of modern surgical technology linked to baseline practical training in minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques;

Teaching methods

The class-based modules include a period of preparatory study, a week of intensive face-to-face lectures and tutorials, followed by a period for assignment work. Attendance at modules is a requirement for study. Some non-classroom activities are provided at facilities elsewhere in the University, including surgical simulators and operating theatres on the University's hospital sites. The course includes taught material on research skills.

The taught modules include group work, discussions, guest lectures, and interaction and feedback with tutors and lecturers. Practical work develops the student's knowledge and understanding of the subject. This includes supervised access to surgical simulators and robots as part of the Surgical Technology and Robotics module.

A virtual learning environment (VLE) provides extensive support between modules.

Assessment methods

To complete the MSc, students will need to:

- Attend the six compulsory modules in Oxford, and undertake assessed written assignments for each module;
- Complete a dissertation on a topic selected by the candidate in consultation with the supervisor and approved by the Standing Committee.

Dissertation

The dissertation will be founded on a work-based research project that will build on the material studied in the taught modules. The dissertation should normally not exceed 15,000 words.

The project will normally be supervised by an academic supervisor from the University of Oxford, and an employer-based mentor.

If you are seeking to expand your knowledge and skills in the management of health services, this degree caters for your needs. This includes medical or general hospital administrators, clinicians, quality assurance managers, team leaders, senior nursing administrators, unit managers and a range of general task coordinators within the health care system.

If you are working or planning to work in middle or senior management roles in health care, this course will help you prepare for and advance your career.

The course coordinator, Professor Just Stoelwinder, is one of Australia's most senior and respected health care managers and management and policy academics.

You will complete eight core and three elective units.

The course is structured in 2 parts. Part A Advanced Healthcare Administration and Management and Part B. Extending specialist knowledge electives.  All students complete Part A and B.

Alternative qualifications

You may be eligible to exit your course early and apply to graduate with one of the following qualifications, provided you have met the requirements for the qualification during your enrolment in the Masters course:

  • Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management: you’ll need to complete a total of 24 credit points (6 months full time study), with a minimum of 18 credit points at level 4 or above.
  • Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management: you’ll need to complete a total of 48 credit points (1 year full time study), with a minimum of 36 credit points at level 4 or above.

If you decide to graduate early, you will need to discontinue from the Masters course. You may be eligible to receive credit for the units you have completed if you re-apply and are re-admitted to this course or apply for another graduate degree at Monash University.

Part A. Advanced Healthcare Administration and Management

These studies provide you with a comprehensive study of health services management and administration, enabling you to gain advanced skills and knowledge. This includes in areas of health system laws, clinical leadership and management, quality improvement, financial and information management, health policy and health services development.

Part B. Extending specialist knowledge electives

These studies enable you to develop specialised knowledge and advanced skills in areas that suit your interests, skills and career goals. The theoretical and practical skills you gain are consolidated through the completion of a case study, in which you focus on exploring in detail a complex health services management problem within your workplace or within a health care setting.
