Assessment used within this programme is usually formative or summative. In some modules students are required to present their research/findings to their lecturer’s and peers followed by a question and answer session. Programme Delivery

The course is delivered over two years, based on a blended learning format; a mixture of face-to-face contact (approximately 9 hours per module) in addition to 12-18 hours per week of self-directed study combined with e-tutorial on-line support. Students attend on-campus lectures/tutorials on a Friday afternoon and/or Saturday, approximately once every 5 weeks. The final module of year one consists of practical experimentation, when students obtain hands-on experience of a range of biomedical and engineering techniques. Students are required to attend 3-4 practical sessions during this module. Completion of a research project (preferably at place of work) is also required. Semester 1 exams are held in January and Semester 2 exams are held in June. Students will also be required to produce a thesis based on a research project preferably carried out at their place of work.

Second Class Honours in any science, engineering, medical or technology discipline. Candidates with a general (ie non-honours), or third class honours, B.Sc./B.E. can still apply provided they have at least three years relevant work experience.

The course is very flexible. You can either study full-time or part-time in Portsmouth in a classroom environment.

This well-established course comprises four units followed by a dissertation:

Business Transformation through Quality Management introduces you to the fundamental concepts of Total Quality Management and Organisational Behaviour, focusing on the application of these concepts in the organisation. It includes driving a culture of continuous improvement and managing change.

Quantitative and Research Methods evaluates concepts of quantitative methods and the application of specialist statistics to aid decision-making within organisations. It also covers the theory and application of research methodologies to support organisational improvement activities. These skills are further developed in the dissertation.

Business Operations – the Quality Management Perspective will give you knowledge of business systems for quality planning, quality standards and the benefits accruing from integrated management systems and their application in the workplace to generate organisational efficiencies. It shows you how tools such as SERVQUAL, FMEA, QFD and Benchmarking can help evaluate how an organisation is performing against their strategic vision and goals.

Strategic Organisational Excellence looks at the links between concepts of excellence (as used by EFQM and other excellence models) and their use in the strategic management of an organisation. It explores issues raised by variations in culture and sector, both within the organisation and in its relationships with its stakeholders. It will also introduce you to Corporate Social Responsibility and Quality in the Supply Chain.

The Dissertation provides the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research and effectively communicate your findings in an individual research project. Your dissertation will focus on a specific quality management issue of your choice, which may relate to a work situation. You will receive one to one supervision during the dissertation.

Programme Assessment

The course uses a range of teaching methods including formal lectures, tutorials, in-class exercises and work based assignments. Classes are also interactive with the use of case studies and invited speakers. The University’s virtual learning environment (VLE) further supports student study by hosting a range of activities and resources online. There will be staff-led online tutorials with other students for distance learning. We encourage and develop critical thinking and self-directed study, with academic support from University Tutors.

Performance in all units is assessed by means of coursework. The assessment comprises a mixture of individual and group work assessments, case study analyses and reports, essays and presentations. Individual and generic feedback is provided for all assessments.

Major projects

You'll undertake a research dissertation related to operations management. This is an opportunity to showcase the skills acquired in classes during the year and to apply research practice. Supervised by a member of academic staff, you'll conduct a literature review and carry out an appropriate study.

Project or dissertation

You will undertake an individual project or dissertation work in the summer period (May–August). Project and dissertation options are closely linked to staff research interests. September entry students have a choice of management dissertation topics in addition to mechanical engineering projects, and January entry students have a choice of mechanical engineering projects.

Projects

◾To complete the MSc degree you must undertake a project worth 60 credits. This is an integral part of the MSc programme and many have a technical or business focus.
◾You will gain first-hand experience of managing an engineering project through the integrated systems design project, allowing development of skills in project management, quality management and accountancy.
◾The project is an important part of your MSc where you can apply your newly learned skills and show to future employers that you have been working on cutting edge projects relevant to the industry.
◾You can either choose a topic from a list of MSc projects in Mechanical Engineering or the Management portion of your degree. Alternatively, should you have your own idea for a project, department members are always open to discussion of topics.
◾Students who start in January must choose an engineering focussed project.

Course detail

The candidate for a graduate degree in Applied Statistics is normally expected to have completed courses in mathematics equivalent to two semesters of undergraduate calculus, and to have a working knowledge of computer programming and linear or matrix algebra.

Format and assessment

The M.S. degree in Applied Statistics requires 30 hours, half of which are track specific. There are two different tracks within this degree. These include: Statistics and Analytics. There are five required courses common to both tracks of study.

The electives may be earned in additional coursework with the approval of a faculty advisor. The program of related courses may vary from student to student and depends on the student's interests and academic background. This Masters-level course equips you to be the type of person who can lead a technical team to deliver on time and on budget. This course is designed to respond to a growing shortage of workforce in manufacturing sector. It intends to equip our students with relevant and up-to-date knowledge and skills of advanced design tools, materials, manufacturing processes and systems in conjunction with developing efficient operation and effective management skills. Integrating these will ensure our students to develop the technological and practical ability to meet manufacturing demand for product, company and market needs.

What opportunities might it lead to?

This course has been accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) meeting the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). It will provide you with some of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Module Details

This course aims to provide you with the inter-disciplinary knowledge, attributes and skills necessary to apply the principles of advanced manufacturing systems within the manufacturing industry. You will study several key topics and also complete a four-month individual project tailored to your individual interests that can take place in our own laboratories or, by agreement, in industry.

Here are the units you will study:

Integrated Manufacturing Systems: Systems concepts and techniques are developed in logistics and manufacturing areas with a strong emphasis on simulation techniques and practical case study analysis.

Operations and Quality Management: A strategic approach is used with modern inventory and supply chain management and logistics tools and techniques. Management strategies are developed for quality, including quality systems and quality control.

Advanced Materials: This unit is designed to deal with a wide range of advanced materials for engineering applications. Teaching will address analytical and numerical methods to assess the strength, stiffness, toughness, non-linearity behaviours, vibration and failures of engineering materials for component and structure design.

Supply Chain Management: Supply chain management involves the coordination of production, inventory, location and transportation, among participants in a supply chain. This unit considers the principles and tools of supply chain management, with an emphasis on lean six sigma methods.

Virtual Systems Design and Simulation for Production: This unit is particularly designed to enhance students’ analytical knowledge and practical skills focusing on a sustainable development of systematic approaches and lean production methods to support manufacturing systems analysis, design and performance evaluation with an aid of using advanced computer design and modelling simulation tools.

CAD/CAM Systems: An integrated approach is used towards CAD and CAM. Significant practical hands-on experience is given with commercial level software. Emphasis is placed on case study analysis and system selection and evaluation.

Individual Project: A strong feature that comprises a third of the course. You will be encouraged to undertake projects where possible in industrial companies. However, we also use our extensive resources and staff skills to undertake them within the University.

Programme Assessment

You will be taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials (personal and academic), laboratory sessions and project work. The course has a strong practical emphasis with a significant amount of your time spent our laboratories. We pride ourselves on working at the leading-edge of technology and learning practices.

The demand for more highly skilled manufacturing engineers is always present and it is generally accepted that there is a current shortage of engineers.

This course has a record of almost 100 per cent of our graduates gaining employment in relevant areas such as manufacturing and logistics management, systems engineering, production engineering, design engineering and project management. You could work for a large company, in the Armed Forces or in one of the many small companies within this sector. You could even start your own specialist company.

This course will broaden the knowledge and experience of graduate and practicing engineers in engineering, technology and management. The successful integration and application of these elements will allow you to operate effectively in a wide range of engineering management roles and successfully deliver multi-million pound engineering projects.

The full potential of technological advances can only be fully realised if they are efficiently managed, using proven principles and methodologies. The focus of the programme is on equipping you to do this, within the context of today's engineering and manufacturing environment.
