The Master of Quality Systems gives you a comprehensive understanding of the various functions that coexist and interrelate in a quality-systems oriented organisation. You will learn the tools and techniques used within the context of management and leadership of modern organisational systems.

Take less of your time

The Master of Quality Systems has reduced in 2015 from 240 credits to 180 credits. What this means is that you can now complete this qualification in 1.5 years of full-time study. The 180 credits incorporate the Post Graduate Diploma level qualification, which is a possible exit point after 120 credits are obtained. If you study part-time the qualification takes between 2.5 and five years.

Strategic Organisational Excellence looks at the links between concepts of excellence (as used by EFQM and other excellence models) and their use in the strategic management of an organisation. It explores issues raised by variations in culture and sector, both within the organisation and in its relationships with its stakeholders. It will also introduce you to Corporate Social Responsibility and Quality in the Supply Chain.

Quantitative and Research Methods evaluates concepts of quantitative methods and the application of specialist statistics to aid decision-making within organisations. It also covers the theory and application of research methodologies to support organisational improvement activities.

Programme Assessment

The course uses a range of teaching methods including formal lectures, tutorials, in-class exercises and work-based assignments. Classes are interactive with the use of case studies and invited speakers. About the programme

Quality Management is the application of specialised managerial and technological skills to achieve the desired quality at a minimum cost. It also addresses strategic quality issues and leadership in establishing a total quality ethos which focuses on achieving customer satisfaction.

Our close links with commerce and industry ensure the programme reflects the latest in quality thinking and techniques, and our laboratories have industry-standard equipment. It will enhance your understanding of modern developments within the global field of quality.

This dual award programme is the same as the MSc Quality Management (see page 164) but with additional study at the University of Angers in France. Funding options are available for the period of study in France. At the end of the programme you will receive two Masters; MSc Quality Management (International) from UWS, and MSc ISMP (Ingénierie des Systèmes et Management de Project) from University of Angers. Classes in France are taught in French but you can sit exams and assignments in English.

This course will allow you to study the science and application of modern and traditional techniques for analysis of pharmaceutical products at an advanced level. We will give you the knowledge and expertise to assist in the discovery and development of better medicines and to provide regulatory data to ensure product integrity. You will study the scientific principles underlying quality control for a career in the pharmaceutical industry, health service, research institutes or regulatory authorities.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

You will be taught by and work alongside scientists who are experts in the field and who work in an internationally leading team. Your study time will be as follows:

  • Lectures: approximately 160 hours
  • Lab classes/tutorials: approximately 160 hours
  • Research project module: six months
  • Self-study time: Approximately 40 hours per week

Typically, one credit equates to ten hours of work.

The programme is designed to develop and equip critical champions and ambassadors for quality, safety and governance in health and social care. It enables you to apply your comprehensive knowledge, understanding, expertise and advanced skills to lead evidence-based enhancement of quality, safety and governance in your health and social care settings and evaluate the impact of this. The programme is suitable for individuals from the public, independent and voluntary sectors from any professional background, including clinical and support services.

What you study

Year 1 focuses on the transition to mastery and explores the context of safety, quality and governance in terms of policy, theory and experience, at a personal, local, national and international level. You also study different types and sources of evidence. You use these to identify a quality, safety or governance issue of relevance to your role based on an in-depth study of the principles, practices and tools of safety and governance in health and social care. You then develop and justify a business case for change based on this.

The modules studied in Year 1 make up the Advancing Quality Improvement in Health and Social Care, PgCert.

In Year 2, you plan and implement a change project based on your business case presented at the end of Year 1. To help you achieve this you study topics such as a human factors approach, strategic change management, action learning and leadership and evaluation methodologies. You then develop and critique an evaluation study proposal in Year 2 which you take forward during your dissertation module in Year 3. The modules studied in Year 2 make up the Advancing Human Factors in Health and Social Care, PgCert.

How you learn

In Years 1 and 2 the programme is taught in short study blocks spread across the academic year over a total of 14 days. We use a range of teaching methods including lectures and workshops, student-led seminars, action learning, real-life scenarios and case study analysis, interactive and online learning activities, directed and self-directed study activities. Year 3 is mainly guided self-directed study with the support of a dissertation supervisor. You are supported by module tutors with extensive experience in this subject area and the programme leader who is a member of the founding cohort for the NHS England and Health Foundation Q initiative.

How you are assessed

We use a range of assessment modes throughout the programme. These include an essay on the nature and use of evidence, analysis of a quality, safety or governance issue using a human factors approach, a business case and the final dissertation evaluating the change you have implemented. 

Other modes of assessment include a poster presentation and defence, and an oral presentation with questions and answers. 

The programme is supported by a critical friends stakeholder support forum which consists of service users and carers, employer representatives and academic staff. Members of this group participate in student assessment as well as supporting programme design and delivery as a means of ensuring the person-centred approach pervades all aspects of the programme and to maximise employer/organisational benefit.

Employability

On successful completion of this programme you are equipped with a range of knowledge, expertise and experiences such as advanced reasoning and decision-making skills. The course involves a comprehensive treatment of the science and technology of pharmaceutical analysis with particular emphasis on the regulatory environment in which the pharmaceutical industry operates. It is intended for suitably qualified graduates currently working in or aspiring to work in the pharmaceutical industry - in particular non-pharmacy graduates employed in quality control or quality assurance roles requiring specialised training, retraining or upgrading of skills. The course may also be attractive to technical managers in regulatory affairs, product development and other related areas. The objective is to equip graduates with the appropriate analysis skills required by the pharmaceutical and veterinary manufacturing industries.

The course is available for full-time study over one calendar year or part-time over two years and consists of lectures, workshop and laboratory work. Part-time teaching is normally scheduled for Fridays during academic terms. The course comprises lectures, workshops, seminars, laboratory work, written assignments and factory visits. In addition each student must write a major essay on a designated topic in the area of pharmaceutical analysis. Students proceeding to a M.Sc. degree will be required to undertake a research project and present a detailed scientific report at the end of the course.

The course consists of eight basic modules: regulatory aspects of pharmaceutical analysis, statistics, GLP chromatographic analysis, spectroscopic and physical methods of analysis, pharmacopoeial methods of drug analysis, analysis of low level drug analysis, specialized pharmaceutical methods of analysis, biological and pharmacological methods and pharmaceutical formulation.

The taught modules are supported by lectures and workshops on presentation and research skills and visits to industrial laboratories. The course is taught mainly by College staff, although there is a contribution from specialist visiting lecturers. The research project may be conducted either in the School of Pharmacy or at the student's place of employment but in either case supervision is exercised by a member of the School of Pharmacy academic staff.

Overall assessment of candidates is based on tutor marked assignments (TMAs) during the course work and written examinations in May/June each year. Credits are available for all assignments including laboratory reports. The M.Sc. project report should be of 20,000 words and is examined in September. Candidates must successfully complete the taught component of the course at the Trinity term examinations, before proceeding to the M.Sc. project. Provision is available for a supplemental examination in September each year if required. A reasonable attempt is required in all aspects of the examination process. A pass mark of 40% is normally required but compensation is applied where appropriate.

It will equip participants with skills for modern evidence based management of diabetes patients, and offer practical experience in organisational management, reflective practice and quality improvement.

Dundee has a particular international reputation for Diabetes research, education and informatics developments. With the growing prevalence of diabetes (currently around 5% in the UK with a doubling of rates predicted over the next 15 years), there is an increasing need for generalists to upskill in diabetes care.

This course will equip you with essential skills and modern evidence based practice for clinical management of diabetes patients. In addition, this programme offers knowledge and practical experience in organisational management, reflective practice and quality improvement.

How is this course taught?

The teaching approach is one of blended learning with fixed face to face teaching (lectures, group work, case discussions, workshops, simulation exercises, quizzes) blended with online activities, case based studies and workplace assessment. Much of the later work can be completed flexibly in the students own free time, and has been designed around the needs of students who are also working full time.

The face to face component requires attendance in Dundee, 3 times throughout the year (2 consecutive days teaching each time). The remainder of the course delivered is online.

What will you study?

Year 1: PG Certificate
The proposed Year 1 PG certificate programme will be taught over a period of 12 months. It will be taught and assessed as 3 x 20 credit compulsory modules (SCQF level 11 credits), namely:

Diabetes Clinical Care (20 credits)
Diabetes Organisational Care (20 credits)
Enhanced Patient Care and Professional Development (20 credits)


Year 2: PG Diploma
Students who decide to progress to the diploma stage will have the option of doing a further two modules totalling 60 credits. These modules will develop further advanced skills in clinical care and organisation, healthcare quality improvement and research methodology to allow students to develop their own diabetes service more effectively and embed skills required for their 3rd year dissertation (thesis).

Two of the modules also run as part of the MSc in Quality Improvement:
Quality Improvement in Action (30 credits)
Developing Research and Evaluation Skills (compulsory for students continuing to Year 3) (30 credits)

The third optional module for year 2 is
Advanced Diabetes Clinical Practice (30 credits)

Year 3: MSc Dissertation
Year 3 will involve students undertaking a more substantial project in the field of either Diabetes Care with either a Clinical/ Quality Improvement or Educational theme. Students will be allocated an appropriate university supervisor. This work will be presented as a 10-15,000 word thesis.

How is this course assessed?

Each modules will be assessed individually. Assessments include completion of clinical case scenarios, work place projects, and associated reflective essays in an attempt to embed learning and reflection into real life clinical practice. Quality improvement modules will require additional topic specific written work and on-line activities.

We would envisage this course/ qualification being of interest to health care professionals (e.g. doctors, nurses, pharmacists) working either as generalists or in diabetes care settings. The qualification may be used by primary care doctors for personal development/ CPD accumulation, and to enable them to set up and enhance their own diabetes specialist services.

For the secondary care training doctors, or allied health professionals, the qualifications could be used to help general career progression or be used to aid a move into specialist diabetes care services either within primary or secondary care.

This qualification is NOT equivalent to accreditation onto the diabetes medical specialist register e.g. allowing the individual to operate as a diabetes consultant.

This is an advanced professional development programme for psychology and social science graduates and professionals. Through this programme you will undertake analysis of issues appertaining to the care and progression of individuals with developmental disabilities. You will assess different types of interventions and will have the opportunity to engage with disability service providers and users. You will gain detailed knowledge and understanding of:

  • definitions and epidemiology of intellectual disability
  • cognitive, communicative and social characteristics of people with intellectual disabilities
  • biological, social and environmental causes of intellectual disability
  • behaviour analysis
  • challenging behaviour and other special needs
  • ideology, policy and service development
  • definition and measurement of service quality
  • the relationships between service organisation and quality
  • research methodology and basic statistical analysis

Course structure

Coursework is taught through a mixture of web-based resources, directed reading, videos, lectures, seminars and practical sessions, supported by a number of workshops, where you work with skilled professionals and have the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with fellow students. You will also undertake practical work placements which are assessed by written reports as well as having the opportunity to complete a piece of original research with your Research Project.

Dynamic centre of expertise

This programme is taught by the University's renowned Tizard Centre. An annual seminar series runs at which staff or guest lecturers present the results of research or highlight recent developments in the field of social care. The Jim Mansell Memorial Lecture invites public figures or distinguished academics to discuss topics that could interest a wider audience. The Centre also publishes the Tizard Learning Disability Review (in conjunction with Emerald Publishing) to provide a source of up-to-date information for professionals and carers.

The Tizard Centre provides consultancy to organisations in the statutory and independent sectors, both nationally and internationally, in diversified areas such as service assessment, person-centred approaches, active support and adult protection..

Careers

Our postgraduate courses improve employability prospects for both those with established careers and new entrants to the field. Many of our students already work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in professional, management or supporting capacities.

Our programmes support their continuing professional development and enhance their opportunities for career advancement. Other students, who are at the beginning of their careers, move on to a range of professional roles in health and social care including working as psychologists in learning disability or behavioural specialists in community learning disability teams; service management of development roles; clinical psychology training or a PhD.

Career destinations include working as a consultant behaviour analyst, carer co-ordinator, service care manager, special needs teacher, quality officer, ABA tutor and research assistant in various health care organisations such as Dimensions UK Ltd, Care Management Group, Consensus Support Services, Mencap and Ambitious About Autism.
