You’ll study

You’re required to complete six of the NSF-DBA modules for consideration for the Postgraduate Certificate. For the Postgraduate Diploma you need to complete twelve modules.

Modules run over a 21-month period as a series of 13 one-week residential courses. You complete additional study before sitting examinations for the award of the Certificate or Diploma.

The Diploma can be converted to the MSc by completion of a research project which is normally undertaken at your workplace.

The course is by part-time study only.

Curriculum

The course is based on the syllabus in the European-approved 'Qualified Person' (QP) study guide as used in the pharmaceutical industry.

The course content includes all the diverse elements required to ensure that each batch of a medicinal product meets the quality requirements of the relevant product and manufacturer's licences. This includes:
- an understanding of the pharmacology and chemistry of the product's active and other ingredients
- a knowledge of how the product was manufactured
- how the product delivers the drug in the patient's body
- how the patient's body is expected to handle the drug by way of excretion and metabolism

You’re also made aware of the statutory framework which is applied in the control of the manufacture and distribution of medicinal products.

Facilities

The Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS) offers an excellent environment for research and teaching. It’s located in a new building with several laboratories. All are fitted with modern equipment.

Recent years have seen an increased awareness of how some children and adults can be vulnerable to abuse. As a consequence policies and legislation have been developed to try and safeguard such individuals. However, it is still common for practitioners in health and social care to find themselves in situations where they are supporting vulnerable people.

There are many ways that people can become vulnerable to harm. This raises the questions, “What is vulnerability?”, “Is it inevitable?” and “What are the best strategies for seeking to reduce/eliminate vulnerability?” The course is designed to assist you in critically examining such questions in the context of professional practice.

This covers issues such as sociological and psychological perspectives on vulnerability associated with particular client groups; assessment and planning of interventions, multidisciplinary working and the evidence base for practice.

You will be introduced to key ethical frameworks, ethical decision making, law and policy development. As well as legislation relating to capacity, consent and human rights; safeguarding children, policy frameworks for the protection of vulnerable adults, research and vulnerable groups.

Learning and teaching methods

All students studying for the MSc Professional Practice are required to undertake the core research methods module (40 credits). In order to gain the MSc Professional Practice (Vulnerable Person) degree you will need to study at least 80 credits (including your 60 credit dissertation) relating to care of the vulnerable person. This means that you may choose to study one or both of the specialist modules discussed above.

These modules run on alternate years and are usually delivered via 3 hour sessions on a weekly basis during the academic year.

You will be taught via lectures, seminars and case studies. Past students have felt that they have gained a lot from such discussion with colleagues and learning about different approaches. You will also undertake self-study to develop your knowledge.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

This degree provides graduates with the knowledge to pursue a leadership role within the healthcare profession. Past students have come from a range of backgrounds including mental health, surgery, accident and emergency, learning disabilities, midwifery, school nursing, care of the older person, medicine and community.

Some students have also had a specific remit within their role for the protection of vulnerable children and/ or adults.

Feedback received from students shows that, whatever their professional background, they found the modules clearly related to their practice and that the course has assisted them to enhance the support they offer to persons who may be vulnerable.

Staff in our Counselling Unit are trained and accredited through their relevant professional bodies and/or registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy. Accreditation

Both the part-time and the full-time courses have won the Certificate of Accreditation of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Learning & teaching

- Part-time
This course is run over two academic years. You’ll attend an intensive week of teaching in September as well as attending the University one day per week throughout the academic year. This'll be on either a Monday or Tuesday (according to year of entry) and is from 1pm to 8pm. The course concludes with an intensive week of teaching in June.

- Full-time
This course is made up of four full weeks of teaching in October. Teaching continues on Wednesday to Friday for one academic year. Mondays and Tuesdays are used for counselling practice in an agreed setting.

- MSc
You may progress from the postgraduate diploma to the MSc.
On the Masters programme you’ll have focused instruction on counselling research methods in four day-long intensive training workshops. You’ll also have:

This stimulating programme combines theory and practice and requires significant private study.

Year one is dedicated to group theoretical study with one day of timetabled university study per week and one day of independent study.

Practice placements may involve voluntary counselling agencies; counselling services in colleges, hospitals or workplaces or those attached to a GP surgery. You will need to find your own placements, with assistance from course tutors and will also need to access and fund appropriate supervision for this phase of your course.

Completion of year two is equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy which will enable you to practice as a qualified counsellor, working with clients aged 16 and over, subject to BACP approval.

In year three independent study takes over as you embark on ethical, reliable and valid independent research for your 60 credit dissertation. Four days of timetabled sessions introduce this phase of the course and include research ethics and methodology.

During your studies you will also have to attend and fund a minimum of 12 hours of personal therapy.

In terms of learner support, students are taught together, encouraging a supportive peer approach. Module leaders offer academic support on individual units and small group skills tutorials are available.

Placements

In addition to the taught components of the Counselling Psychology MSc/DPsych course, you are also required to complete 400 hours of professional face-to-face client practice in placements and 45 hours of indirect client work; frequent clinical supervision; personal development; 40 hours of personal therapy (at least 15 hours in Year 1); and various pieces of assessment throughout the three years, including a doctoral thesis.

Who arranges the placements?
It is your responsibility to find and arrange your own placements, although advice and support is offered by the Placements Co-ordinator and personal tutors. If your application is successful, on acceptance of a place on the course you will be sent further information about finding placements and available opportunities.

Do placements have to be in London?
No, you can undertake your placements wherever is convenient for you as long as you ensure your supervision is from appropriately qualified professionals. Supervisors should be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a 'Practitioner Psychologist', 'Registered Psychologist', 'Counselling Psychologist' or 'Clinical Psychologist'. All placements arrangements need to be approved by your personal tutor.

Supervision
Supervision should normally be in the ratio of one hour of supervision for every 8 hours of counselling work in Years 1 and 2, with a minimum of one hour of supervision per fortnight. In Year 3, supervision should be in the ratio of one hour for every 8 hours of counselling work, with a minimum of two hours of supervision per month.

Teaching and learning

A wide range of learning and teaching methods are used, including lectures, group discussion, group work, role play, trainee presentations, supervised clinical practice, personal therapy and personal development activities.

Assessment

You will be assessed through role plays, learning logs, skills assessments, essays, process reports, client studies, examination, critical literature review and DPsych portfolio.

Course details

Pathways in this programme include the following shared modules: applying evidence to practice, developing self and others, project design for research, and the research dissertation. The pathways will all have at least one pathway specific module and two programme optional modules. To gain a postgraduate certificate, you’ll need to earn 60 credits. You’ll study three modules worth 20 credits each: applying evidence to practice, a pathway specific module or a programme option module if you are not pursuing a specific pathway, and a programme option module. To gain a postgraduate diploma, you’ll need to earn 120 credits. You’ll study three modules worth 20 credits each: project design for research, developing self and others, and a pathway specific module or programme option. To be awarded the full masters degree, you’ll need to earn a total of 180 credits. You’ll study the same core modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 60 credits coming from your research dissertation.

Learning and teaching methods

To gain the MSc Professional Practice (Learning Disability) degree you will need to study at least 80 credits (including your dissertation of 60 credits) relating to the support and care of people with learning disabilities. This means that you must choose to study at least one of the specialist modules. To graduate from a masters’ degree course you must study a total of 180 credits which must include a 40 credit research module.

These modules run yearly depending on demand and are usually delivered via weekly four-hour sessions throughout the academic year.

Teaching methods include facilitated discussions, seminars, workshops and presentations. You will be required to undertake background reading to develop a broad knowledge base and encouraged to become a critical thinker, enabling you to question theories and develop your own ideas informed by evidence and research.

We offer a range of support services for students with a disability. We encourage you to discuss your individual requirements with an adviser as early as possible when you apply.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

To date, students undertaking this course have normally been qualified nurses. However, other professionals such as psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and social workers have undertaken modules. Currently, there are attempts being made to include this pathway or elements of it in the post qualified social work framework and childrens nursing post registration programme. Feedback received from students undertaking modules has so far been very positive especially the use of service users and carers as well as specialist practitioners and leading academics.

A human factors approach involves applying theory, data and design methods about how humans interact with their environment to make it easier for work to be done in the right way.

Course details

The programme develops and equips critical advocates and ambassadors for quality, safety and governance in health and social care. It also enables you to apply comprehensive knowledge, understanding, expertise and advanced skills to lead a human factors-based project in the work place to enhance the quality, safety and governance of care. The programme is suitable for you if you work in the public, independent and voluntary sectors, or any other professional field including clinical and support services.

To maximise your success on this programme you need a viable project in line with your departmental or organisational priorities and agreed by your relevant organisational representative and programme leader. Throughout this course you will have access to qualified CIEHF members. Teaching

The programme is taught in short study blocks spread across the academic year over a total of 14 contact days. We use a range of teaching methods including lectures and workshops, student-led seminars, action learning, interactive and online learning activities, directed and self-directed study activities. You are supported by module tutors with extensive experience in this subject area and the programme leader who is a member of the founding cohort for the NHS England and Health Foundation Q Initiative.

We use a range of assessment modes throughout the programme. These include an essay analysing a quality, safety and governance issue using a human factors approach, a project-based evaluation research critique, and a poster presentation and oral defence of a change project.

Formative processes include an informal presentation on the improvement project plan and initial implementation. This is an opportunity for you to receive early development feedback. Presentations are made to a small panel drawn from the critical friends stakeholder support forum whose members participate in student assessment and support programme design and delivery. This group comprises service users and carers, employer representatives and academic staff to ensure that a person-centred approach extends to all aspects of the programme, maximising employer/organisational benefit.

Employability

Graduates from this programme are equipped with specialist human factors knowledge, expertise and experience as well as a range of more generic attributes such as advanced reasoning and decision-making skills. You are able to work collaboratively, present and research. You also have strong ICT skills that highly sought after by employers.

The Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) PGCert at UCLan has been developed in collaboration with the regional Local Authorities. It provides an intense period of teaching and learning which draws on the expertise of AMHPs, academics, lawyers and service users and carers.

The programme reflects the needs of our local employers and stakeholders and we continually shape this in response to feedback. Agency colleagues and previous learners found UCLan’s AMHP programme to have a “supportive learning environment” in which they feel “keen and motivated to learn”, experiencing a “shift in thinking” towards the AMHP perspective and value base.

This course is specific to qualified and professionally registered mental health practitioners (Social Workers, Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists or Clinical Psychologists) who are usually nominated and funded by their Local Authority to undertake AMHP training. It is also open to any applicants that meet the entry requirements, including practitioners working outside of a Local Authority. Applicants will need to have access to a suitable practice placement with a practice assessor who is a qualified AMHP.

DBS CHECKS

This course will involve access to children and/or vulnerable adults. You will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB) and we will guide you through this process.

In 2014, more graduates from The University of Law secured training contracts than from any other college. 97% of our full-time 2014 and 2015 LPC students had secured employment within nine months of graduation (based on known destinations).

Flexible study options

Each course features modular delivery incorporating flexible study options to suit you, including accelerated, full and part-time courses:

‌•Our full-time accelerated LPC allows you to complete the course in just six months, meaning you can fast-track your training and start your career months ahead of students on standard full-time courses. You can choose between two convenient start dates – January and July – and benefit from a choice of convenient locations across the country.

‌•Our full-time LPC allows you to complete your training and start your career within a year. You can choose to have all your face-to-face tuition and workshops for the core practice areas concentrated into two set days a week. Please note that you may have to come into university on additional days for assessments and that this option is subject to availability at your centre of choice.

‌•Our part-time LPC allows you to complete the course within two years during the day, evening, or at weekends. The course blends self-study with either one full day a week, two evenings a week, or one full weekend, approximately twice a month. This means you can fit your study around existing work or other commitments and offers a choice of convenient study locations.

Please note: Students with a disability applying for a Disabled Students’ Allowance, please be advised that they are not eligible to apply for the full-time 6 months accelerated LPC.
